Biografie

Allen wurde am 6. Januar 1950 in Houston, Texas, als drittes Kind des Kieferorthopäden Andrew Arthur Allen und der für den Pulitzer-Preis nominierten Künstlerin, Dichterin, Dramatikerin, Gelehrten und Verlegerin Vivian (geb. Ayers) Allen geboren. Sie erwarb einen Bachelor in Kunst in klassischer griechischer Literatur, Sprache und Theater an der Howard University und studierte Schauspiel am HB Studio in New York City. Sie war Mitglied der Chi Delta Mu Health Professional Fraternity. Sie hat einen Ehrendoktortitel der Howard University und der University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

Allen ist mit dem ehemaligen NBA-Spieler Norm Nixon verheiratet; Das Paar hat zwei Kinder: die Tänzerin Vivian Nichole Nixon und den Basketballspieler Norman Ellard Nixon Jr., und Allen ist die Stiefmutter des Schauspielers DeVaughn Nixon. Allen war zuvor von 1975 bis 1983 mit Win Wilford verheiratet. Sie ist die Schwester der Schauspielerin/Regisseurin/Sängerin Phylicia Rashad, der Jazzkomponistin Adrew Arthur Allen III und des Immobilienbankiers Hugh W. Allen, die in drei Folgen auftraten aus A Different World als Quincy Tolleson.
