Vida temprana y educación[]
Randall nació en Pacific Grove, California , hijo de Randy (maestro) y Sharon (escritora). Tiene un hermano (Nathan) y una hermana (Joanna).
Randall se graduó de la escuela secundaria Monterey High School en Monterey, California . Durante su último año, Randall fue coeditor en jefe del periódico escolar, The Galleon . También jugó al baloncesto.
Su padre, Randy, enseñaba química y física en Monterey High. Cuando Randy murió en 1997 de cáncer de colon, el gimnasio de Monterey High recibió su nombre poco después en su memoria.
Su madre, Sharon, es columnista independiente. Randall escribió el prólogo de su libro "Birdbaths and Paper Cranes".
Randall asistió al Monterey Peninsula College y a la Universidad Estatal de San Francisco. Obtuvo una licenciatura en inglés con especialización en estudios cinematográficos en la Universidad Estatal de San Francisco.
