It takes approximately 13 years of training in order to stand in an OR and cut into an actual human being without supervision. We need a college degree with a close-to-perfect GPA and an excellent score on the MCATs to be lucky enough to be accepted into a medical school. And then, after four years of med school, we face 60 months of surgical residency. We tell ourselves that the lives we touch and people we help will make all sacrifices worthwhile. But until you've done it, there's no way to know for sure. Sometimes, the things we fight hardest to achieve end up costing us the most. But it doesn't mean the effort was a waste. Every experience can teach us something if we choose to receive the lesson. But what we learn may completely surprise us.

All Star is the eighth episode of the nineteenth season and the 408th overall episode of Grey's Anatomy.

Short Summary[]

Teddy makes a challenging decision. Meanwhile, Maggie and Winston aren't on speaking terms, and Link leans on Jo for emotional support as he preps for a surgery on a well-known athlete. Simone and Lucas are surprised by an unlikely visitor.

Full Summary[]

Lucas, Simone, and Mika take a break from painting the living room to enjoy beer and tacos with Lucas and Jules.

The three interns move some basic furniture into the living room.

Simone and Lucas wake up in their sleeping bags on the floor as Mika enters. She got coffee for all three of them and a doughnut for herself with Lucas's card.

After getting dressed, they draw lots for the bedrooms. Simone gets the primary bedroom.

Jo has prepared a high-protein breakfast for Link's big day. He's operating on a Seattle Seahawk football player today, who is the team's number one draft pick. His entire NFL future is in Link's hands. Jo reminds him they are the most capable hands in the state. Link regrets that Nico is off travelling with the Seattle Mariners but Jo reminds him he can do this by himself.

Richard catches up with Teddy as her offer for the Chief position expires at 6PM today. With Nick being gone for a few days, Richard is pulling triple duty as residency director, acting Chief of Surgery, and Chief of Chiefs. With all her predecessors abandoning the job, she's not sure if she wants it anymore. Richard stresses that the hospital needs this. Teddy needs more time.

Maggie and Amelia watch a video of Zola terribly playing the cello. Winston joins them on the elevator, initiating a cold silence. Once he gets off, Maggie explains to Amelia that they couldn't get a therapy appointment until three weeks from now, so they have instituted a ceasefire until then.

Link, Winston, and Owen catch up with Link on his way to the Tank. They are all a fan of the Seahawks. Levi joins in, having gone to the same high school as the Tank. Link says he doesn't need a room full of doctors to make this into a bigger deal than it is.

Jermaine Talbott, a.k.a. The Tank, is being interviewed by Ken Bendix from the Seattle Times as Link enters the room with the interns. Yasuda presents the cause. Due to a football injury, Jermaine will receive a bridge-enhanced anterior cruciate ligament repair, also known as the BEAR procedure. Simone earns the right to scrub in by pointing out why that procedure is better than a traditional repair. Jermaine asks how else the BEAR is important to his career. After some failed guesses from the other, Benson brings up that he played for the Belser Bears as a true freshman. Benson gets to scrub in, too. The other three interns will join Levi, who is eavesdropping outside.

Mika, Jules, and Lucas go to the ER. Mika is appealing this morning's draw and says the first person who gets to do a procedure earns the bedroom to the left of the stairs. The ER is disappointingly quiet until a man stumbles in clutching his stomach. All three interns rush over. Jared participated in the Pho-nomenal challenge, an eating challenge that can earn you up to $250. Jared tried five days ago and hasn't been able to take a crap since.

Jared is groaning in pain as Levi joins the interns. Levi quickly examines Jared while nurse Marilu comes to fetch an intern. Levi picks Jules. Levi tells Lucas and Mika to rule everything out and try a stool softener or enema. If none of that works, they can consider a procedure. Lucas is not feeling like doing a digital rectal exam.

Lupe plays in the exam room while his mother, Sierra, is arranging for someone to cover her shift. Jules comes in. Sierra is pregnant with her third child and she has been spotting for a few days. Sierra hasn't been paying close attention to her complaints as she's swamped taking care of her kids while their father drives rigs cross-country. Jules decides to page OB.

Bailey gets her selfie with the Tank and says her husband will be really jealous. Benson says he watched during a nighttime shift in the Caribbean as Jermaine had that pick six to win the Rose Bowl. That was the first time Jermaine tore his meniscus but it won them the championship, so worth it. A storm shut down the hospital Wi-Fi so everyone gathered around Benson's hotspot to watch. And now Jermaine is his patient. Ken finds that an interesting angle and asks Benson for an interview. Bailey is paged to daycare. Once alone, Simone says she had a few ACL repairs herself in college from damage she sustained while ice skating, which she had to stop doing due to med school.

Both Owen and Teddy got paged to daycare. She figures blocks were thrown again and they need to file an injury report. Owen says paperwork like that is brought to you as Chief. You also get a part-time administrative assistant. Teddy figures Owen was promised Chief of Trauma if she becomes Chief of Surgery. Teddy hates how it's all about him again.

They arrive at daycare where Bailey is filing out a report. Allison bit Pru. Owen says this is a one-parent job and leaves. Teddy apologizes to Bailey.

Jo is doing an ultrasound. Sierra is 11 weeks along and everything looks good. She needs to rest and stay for an IV of fluids since she's a little dehydrated. Sierra doesn't appear happy. She takes a call and finds out the person who was supposed to cover her shift didn't show up. Jules inquires if she's okay but Sierra claims she is.

Jermaine says he has to stay focused and kick it up a notch so he can get the money to bring over his family from Port-au-Prince. A scout saw him play in the sixth grade and was asked to train in Seattle. He moved here by himself when he was 11. He only went home every Christmas. This is his chance to get everyone back together. He fears what'll happen if the repair doesn't work. Simone suggests he should focus on the chance that he can play ball again.

Jared's X-ray reveals a lot of fecal matter, confirming the diagnosis. Lucas doesn't want to do the enema and offers Mika the bedroom if she does it, and also throws in two weeks worth of groceries. She declines but goes to do the enema anyway.

Bailey and Teddy leave daycare. Bailey says biting happens and asks about the Chief job. Teddy is still unsure despite the great title and pay bump. Bailey points out it's rather a pay nudge, not enough to make up for all the extra work and complaints. That is why Richard can't find any takers for the job, which puts Teddy in an interesting negotiating position. Bailey gives her some pointers as to what to ask for.

Teddy has taken her demands to Richard: a full-time administrative assistant who was also function as the point person for staff complaints, an additional three weeks off, double the current pay increase, and a stipend for research. Richard needs some time to think this over. From a distance, Bailey signals to Teddy that she did well.

Amelia joins Maggie in a lounge. Maggie is working on her case report for Arlo but she has trouble deciphering her notes. She does not want to consult Winston. She needs a win because she's failing in her marriage and she hates failing. Amelia points out hiding from the hard parts will only make it last longer.

In pre-op, Jermaine is FaceTiming his mother Nadine. He introduces her to Simone and Benson. Nadine says her son has broken records with his talent. He got that strength from his mother. They have to take care of her baby. Nadine tells her son "eyes forward." Jermaine is ready.

Jermaine has been put under for the surgery. Jo wishes Link good luck in the scrub room. Link has to stay sharp. It's been a while since he's been in the pressure cooker. Jo points out he never folded before. He starts scrubbing.

Teddy joins Richard in his office. Richard says history is written in this building. Working here evokes a feeling of duty. It's an honor to serve here and often, service requires sacrifice. Being here brings him joy and after having thought about it, he has decided to take the job since he's happy with the offer as it is. Teddy feels they have entered the negotiating stage and says she's willing to lose the stipend.

Winston joins Owen in the gallery of Link's OR. Lucas updates him on where they're at in the procedure. Owen inquires about Winston's home life. Winston says Owen's advice blew up in his face but he should have known better than to take marriage advice from someone whose own marriage isn't doing too good.

Down in the OR, Link prepares to insert the scaffold. As amazing as Link is, what Jermaine does takes a big toll on his knees. On average, defensive players last only six years. Here's to hoping Jermaine will be better than average.

Jules returns to the exam room, where Sierra's stuff is spread across the floor. Sierra apologizes for not having cleaned up after Lupe, who is now napping. Jules notices that Sierra seems zoned out. Sierra has a lot on her mind but she won't bother Jules. Jules sits down and tells her she can talk to her. Sierra says the condom broke. She and her husband use condoms since she does not like the feeling birth control pills gives her. After her previous two pregnancies, she felt this huge wave of exhaustion and defeat coming at her. She went really dark after both babies. Her doctor diagnosed her with post-partum depression but none of of the pills or talk therapy worked. It lasted for months. When she was spotting, she felt relieved. She denies having done anything to terminate the pregnancy but the thought of a miscarriage didn't scare her. Sierra inquires about the cost of an abortion. Jules says their reproductive clinic provides abortion services on a sliding scale. Sierra consents to a consult.

Link, Simone, and Benson have finished the procedure, leaving only a small scar. It's art. The crowd in the gallery applauds Link's work. Jo is fetched by Jules.

Lucas finds Mika waiting outside the restroom. Can't rush the rectum. She's already thinking about decorating her room but Lucas points out it's not her room until she has success with Jared. After two flushes, he comes out cheering. He feels like he lost 10 pounds. Jared is planning on going back to the restaurant to finish the challenge.

Simone and Benson are charting in Jermaine's room. Simone wants to call Nadine to update her. Benson scoffs at her being on a first-name basis with Jermaine's mother but Simone considers if part of bedside manner. Suddenly, Jermaine's sats drop and his heart rate goes up. Simone calls Link into the room, interrupting his interview with Ken. Jermaine's blood pressure is plummeting. Link says they need to re-intubate and he has Winston paged.

Winston is doing a trans-oesophageal ultrasound and finds a large saddle pulmonary embolism. They need to perform an emergency embolectomy. They rush Jermaine to the IR suite.

As Bailey peeks in from the hallway, Richard tells Teddy that half of her assistant's salary will come from her pay. He can't double the extra pay but he can offer 25% above the initial offer. Teddy demands 75% and a fully paid salary for the assistant. Amelia comes in. She hopes she's not too late since she would like to be considered for the Chief position.

Jo explains to Sierra that they can perform an in-office procedure at this stage of the pregnancy that only involves suction, no blades. A volunteer can take Lupe for ice cream during the procedure. Sierra loves her kids and she needs to be okay to take care of them. She can't go through a depression again thus agrees to the procedure. Jo invites Jules to assist.

In the IR suite, Simone wonders how a clot this big could have formed this quickly. Winston says it can happen. There is nothing Link could have done to prevent this. Jermaine goes into V-fib. They try defibrillating to no avail. They start performing CPR while Simone tells Jermaine "eyes forward."

Jo and Jules have gotten Sierra ready for the abortion. She's on the phone with her husband, who wants to stay on. Jo walks Sierra through every step. While they wait for the paracervical block to take effect, Jo checks if Sierra is doing okay. She is. They measure the length of her uterus before dilating the cervix. Following the dilation, Jo uses suction to terminate the pregnancy, after which Jules affirms completion with the ultrasound. Sierra can't believe that went by so fast. She assures her husband that she is okay.

The doctors take turns performing CPR on Jermaine. After 2 hours, Winston tells Link that he's gone. Winston calls time of death, 15:45. Winston wants to go out first and says he'll try to stall the press. Link says no. The press only sees a football player with stats and dollar signs but Jermaine was just a kid doing what he loved. And now he's gone, which is on Link. He leaves the room. Simone tears off her mask and leaves, too, after looking at Jermaine's body for a few seconds.

Jules and Jo walk Sierra out. She may experience some normal cramping and spotting but she should call them for any other symptoms. Sierra thanks her doctors. Jules tells her she's an incredible mom. Sierra and Lupe leave. Jo then compliments Jules on her bedside manner. Jules appreciates the compliment. She grew up a little left of normal. Her parents taught her to clear energy fields and roll joints at age 10, which didn't really pave the way for success. Jo didn't have the most convention upbringing either. Jules stayed and listened to Sierra, who is better off now. Jo receives a worrying text. Jules smiles as she fills out a form.

Amelia cites her Parkinson's research, which will boost this hospital if she becomes Chief. Amelia needs twice the offered rate and full flexibility to travel to visiting labs. Also, she found out what the Chief is paid at Seattle Pres and Richard should be ashamed of his offer. She slips him a note with the salary. Richard wonders why Amelia needs to go other labs when they have one right here. Teddy interjects that she doesn't need to go anywhere. Richard tells Amelia he cannot consider her application since he already offered Teddy the job. He agrees to her demands, including a small stipend. He leaves the room. Amelia then informs Teddy that Bailey sent her in; she never wanted the job. Teddy sits down in the Chief chair and soaks in the win.

Benson joins Simone in Jermaine's empty room. She volunteered to call Nadine since they already met. They owe Nadine this. However, she doesn't know what to say. Benson has been on the other end of that call. There are no right words. Simone asks him to call with her. He agrees and sits down with her. They call Nadine, who breaks down as they bring up that there was a complication.

Maggie finds Winston outside. She heard about Jermaine. She offers to send him the introduction to the paper she wrote as a distraction. He does not want a distraction. Burying herself in work to avoid feelings is what she does, but not him. He insists that Maggie is making his transfer a bigger deal than it needs to be. Young, strong people die and she wants to throw away their marriage over a transfer. She says he wants to throw away his ability to save lives. Winston says that didn't make much of a difference today. Maggie points out he tried. Not everyone can be resuscitated. Winston agrees to that and leaves.

Lucas joins Simone on the elevator. As he starts talking about his patients today, she goes in for a passionate kiss.

Teddy meets Owen, who has picked up the kids from daycare. He tells her that the press are saying that Link killed Jermaine. Teddy realizes she's already facing her first crisis as Chief. They leave the hospital together and make their way through a crowd of reporters at the exit.

At home, Link tells Jo that Jermaine lost his life because of him. Jo tells Link he did everything right. She hugs him to comfort him. He leans in for a kiss but she pulls back. She says he's drunk and sad. He apologizes and goes to leave but she says it's okay and hugs him again.

Lucas and Simone arrive at the house. After a near-kiss on the porch, they go inside. Simone is surprised to see Trey inside. Mika let him in after confirming that he knew Simone. He brought snacks. Trey hands Simone a bouquet of flowers and picks her up. He should have come a long time ago. Trey asks about Lucas. Simone says he's her roommate.
