“ Uncontrollable bleeding. Acidosis. Cold. We all know what the combination means. We call it the triad of death. The point of no return. It's the moment in the OR where you turn to damage control. You stop. You step back. You let the body rest and see if you find a solution to the chaos that's happening inside. Once the chaos subsides, we have to go back. Take another look. We have to ask ourselves: can this body be put back together? If we've done our jobs right, it can. We stop the bleeding. We sew up the damage. We make the body whole again. But no matter how hard we try, we have to realize some things just can't be fixed. ”

Bend & Break is the fifth episode of the eleventh season and the 225th overall episode of Grey's Anatomy.

In this Callie and Arizona centric episode, the couple takes a look into the problems that have contributed to their troubled marriage. At work, Callie immerses herself in the Veterans' project, and Arizona struggles to impress Dr. Herman. Meanwhile, Richard leans on Bailey for advice.

As Arizona talks about the triad of death, we see flashbacks of her relationship with Callie.

In their therapist's office, Callie says they've been talking about having another baby for months and they were excited. Arizona says that she never said that she doesn't want another baby. Callie says that she didn't have to say anything as her behavior made it clear. She says that there was no reason for her to start training again because she's an amazing pediatric surgeon and people come from all over the country for her. Arizona says that the fellowship is advancing her career, but Callie interrupts and says it's not advancing their family. Their therapist then stops her and says she'd like to hear the rest of Arizona's sentence. She asks Arizona what she was going to say.

Arizona and Dr. Herman deliver a baby. They assure the mom that the baby is beautiful as Arizona hands the baby off to Alex. After a second, she asks Alex how the baby is doing, but Herman says the baby's not her patient anymore and she needs to focus on the mother.

Back in the therapist's office, Arizona says several things she loves about Callie, including that she loves when Callie talks to patients like they're the only person in the room, that it's sexy when she bites her lip just a little bit as she looks at scans, how she does the voices while reading to Sofia and Arizona says she could listen to that sound all day for the rest of her life. Callie smiles when she sleeps and Arizona loves having that be the first thing she sees when she wakes up. After that, Callie interrupts and starts crying, asking "Why?" The therapist asks her to talk about how Arizona's words make her feel. Callie would like it if Arizona said those things out loud once in a while to her. Arizona says she would if Callie let her. Arizona says she was just saying them and Callie cut her off. She says Callie's always too busy trying to speak for her. Their therapist reminds them of the language they talked about using with each other. Arizona corrects that she feels that Callie's always cutting her off. Callie interrupts her again and Arizona says she feels that Callie just did it again. Their therapist says they should try again.

In the OR, Arizona says she feels that Callie should go with a primary closure. Callie says that she feels that the artery is missing too large a piece and she needs a graft. Arizona says they agreed in pre-op, but Callie says now that she's seen it, she changed her mind. Arizona says that when Callie disregards her medical opinion, it makes her feel like she's forgetting that Arizona's a pediatric surgeon who knows that the kind of graft Callie wants to use can cause complications in children. Callie says that when Arizona corrects her in the OR, it makes her feel like she can't do her job. When Callie sends Jo to get the graft materials, Arizona says they don't need any artificial materials. Callie says fine, they'll cut into the kid's leg.

Back in the therapist's office, Arizona says it was never about the leg. It goes way before the leg. Four years ago, she received the grant of a lifetime. She thought she'd never get an opportunity like that. Callie says she took it and she went, but Arizona reminds her that she came back for Callie and when she came back, Callie was pregnant. Callie turns to their therapist and explains that she's bisexual and that that freaks Arizona out. Callie says she was pregnant and ...? Arizona says she got no time to process it. She was so in love with Callie that she wanted to be with her no matter what. Callie interrupts with, "If you're about to say what I think you're about to say ..." Arizona tells her to let her get a word in. Callie says she trapped Arizona into a kid she didn't want and now she's stuck. Arizona sternly tells her never to say that she doesn't love her child or that she regrets her child. She regrets that Callie made the decision for her. And whenever Arizona makes a decision for herself, Callie makes her feel like the worst, most selfish person in the world. Callie asks if she made Arizona feel selfish when she decided to sleep with another woman. Arizona says that's not what she meant and Callie knows it's not what she meant. She meant that any time she does something of her, but before she can finish, Callie starts to get her stuff together and stand up. The therapist says their session isn't done yet, but Callie says it feels pretty done.

Callie is in a conference room with Owen and Jackson saying their idea is the stupidest thing she's ever heard. They're talking about using a portion of her grant money to pay for a multi-step facial reconstruction for just one patient. Jackson asks if she just wants to reject him, but she says they'll find another way to help him that's less stupid. Jackson says he's going to get lunch and Owen should find him later. After he leaves, Owen sits down and asks Callie what's going on. She says she keeps giving and giving and giving.

Again in the therapist's office, Arizona says that Callie's giving her things she doesn't want. Callie says that all she's done is everything Arizona's asked her to do. Arizona asked her not to leave her after the plane crash and she didn't. She wanted Callie to stay after she cheated on her and she did. She wanted a house and they bought one. She does everything for Arizona because she loves her. Arizona loves her, too. Callie says they're here and she wants something and Arizona can't give it to her. Arizona says that she never said that she doesn't want a baby. The whole reason they're there is because of her and what she wants. She's trying to give Callie what she wants, but Callie's making it hard. Callie asks Arizona why she can't commit to anything and Arizona says that she's committed the last five years of her life to Callie. The therapist says they're not getting anywhere. They've circled right back to where they started. It's time to hit the reset button. Arizona says great, they'll do that. Dr. Dawson asks them if they've considered taking time apart. Callie is dubious, saying the last thing they need is more time apart. Arizona tells her to let Dawson finish. She says not to think of it as a separation. They've gone through so much. They're completely different people from when they first got together. It'll be helpful to re-discover who they are. Take a break from each other. Callie says that's the same thing, the first step to divorce. Dawson says that couples come to therapy for one of two reasons. Either one person wants out and needs help telling the other or they both desperately want to make it work and they want to fight to do it. Callie says they want to make it work. She turns to Arizona, who says right. Dawson says that they'll do it for an agreed-upon amount of time and then come back together to evaluate the situation. Callie says she doesn't like it, but Arizona says she thinks they should do it.

Arizona asks how long the break will last. Dawson says however long they like and they'll decide it now. Arizona suggests 30 days. Callie questions her needing a break from her for a whole month. When Arizona stays quiet, their therapist reminds her that if she wants to say something, now's the time. Arizona says she was trying to be nice. She doesn't even think that's enough. If she thought she'd go for it, she would have suggested 3-6 months. Callie is shocked. Arizona's trying to be honest. She wants to save them and the only way she knows how to do that is to be honest. Callie says it feels like a joke or a reality show: The Real Lesbian Housewives MD of Seattle. Callie agrees and asks how it works. Dawson says that since they have a child, for her sake, they'll live in the house together as parents, but living separate lives. Boundaries are vital. They'll make a schedule for childcare and stick to it. As she says that, Callie gathers her clothes, toothbrush, hairbrush, and toothpaste. No talking. No communication except for emergencies Callie and Arizona look at each other from their respective rooms. Lastly, no intimacy. No sex with each other or other people.

Day 1

Callie comes into the kitchen where Arizona is making breakfast. Callie tells her that Sofia is getting dressed. She's continuing the purple thing she's had going that week. Callie didn't sleep. She can't do it. It's been one night and she feels that they don't need it. How are they not supposed to talk for an entire month? Arizona remains silent. She begs Arizona to look at her because she needs to talk. Arizona looks at her briefly, but then takes her food over to the table to eat.

Callie apologizes as she removes debris from a wound on Emily Gardner's arm. Emily got her arm caught in a noodle-making machine. It's the dumbest job ever, but she's trying to get into culinary school, which is expensive. Stephanie comes over with her scans. She has several fractures in her arm. Callie says that she needs surgery. Emily asks how long it'll take to heal, because she needs her arm to practice and applications for the school are due in a month. Callie says they'll get her back to it as soon as they can.

Lee Franklin, 1 day old, has esophageal atresia. Arizona explains the condition to his parents. His dad says that Arizona said they'd be able to fix it. Arizona says that the gap is longer than they predicted. Arizona says that Alex can still operate, but it'll be a bit more complicated. Jo explains how they'll pull the parts of his intestine closer, moving them closer each day, and eventually, they'll suture the two pieces together. He'll need to be in a medically-induced coma until his surgery because they need him to be perfectly still. His dad asks why Arizona's not doing the surgery. She says that Alex is taking over the case because she has started a new specialty. She assures them that she trained Alex and he's awesome. Lee's mom asks how long he'll need to be in the coma and Alex says it'll be weeks. He says there are other surgical options, but Arizona says that this is the best one for Lee. Alex asks to see Arizona outside.

Outside Lee's room, Arizona says he's going to make Lee's parents worry. Alex wants to try a different procedure which will fix his problem with one surgery and he can go home sooner. Arizona says using the native esophagus is better. It takes longer, but it's better. She lists off the complications of using a graft from the colon. Alex asks if she's going to let him do his job or continue to do it for him. She looks at her phone and sees that she's late for rounds. She tells him just to do it her way and he agrees only because he was once her patient and she's having trouble cutting the strings. Arizona says it's really because she knows that she's right.

Arizona walks into the room where Dr. Herman and Dr. Graham Maddox are talking to Jaclyn Werlein. Arizona starts to explain her tardiness, but Dr. Herman doesn't care. Jaclyn's baby has critical aortic stenosis. They're performing a valvuloplasty to open the aortic valve. Jaclyn's nervous, but Herman and Maddox reassure her.

In the OR, Herman explains why positioning the baby is so critical. She compliments Graham. Arizona says she'd be happy to assist, but Herman says that Graham is assisting and she can observe for now. Arizona says she's done percutaneous surgeries on babies before, but Herman reminds her that they weren't in utero. Herman notes her impeccable record as a pediatric surgeon, but she has a big fat nothing as a fetal surgeon. Graham compliments Herman again and she says one more and she'll send him to plastics to get his lips removed from her ass.

After the surgery, Graham tells Arizona that there's a model in the skills lab she can practice on. It's old and it smells, but it's there. She thanks him and he says it took him two months to nail it. He wishes her good luck. She sees Stephanie walk by and asks if she's on Callie's service.

Callie says it's the fourth time Arizona has switched Sofia duty with her. Stephanie defends that Arizona said she has to practice. Callie tells her to tell Arizona that her daughter is asking when Arizona will tuck her in at night and remind her that they're sharing custody in this stupid arrangement. Stephanie says she doesn't feel comfortable, but Callie sends her away.

Callie goes back over to where Meredith is looking at a patient's scans. David Lasher, 33, has thyroid cancer. Meredith did a thyroidectomy on him and he'd been cancer-free since then, but he came in complaining of hip pain. Meredith did a PET scan, which showed cancer in his hip. Meredith asks if they can resect it without a full hip replacement. Callie says no. Meredith says he has two kids and a wife and asks how long a hip replacement will last. Callie says 10-15 years and Meredith notes that he'll need another one eventually then. Callie says they either resect it and replace his hip now or the cancer will spread and he'll die. Meredith says she'll schedule a hip replacement, but Callie says don't schedule it now because she has ... and Meredith finishes that she has a kid to pick up. She has to keep a smile on her face despite her spouse barely speaking to her. Meredith gets it.

Callie says goodnight to Sofia and pulls her door shut. Then she hears laughing and conversation coming from the kitchen. She finds April and Arizona in the kitchen cooking. April asks if they're too loud for Sofia. Callie says they aren't, but she thought that Arizona needed to study. April explains that she is. They're making jello moms for her to practice on. The jello is the uterus and the grapes inside are the hearts. She continues to explain, but Callie just cuts her off and grabs a bottle of wine, which she drinks from. April says she's also making ambrosia salad, a Kepner family recipe.

Dawson asks Callie what she did as we see her walk into her bedroom with the bottle of wine and shut the door. Callie says she followed the rules, but the rules suck.

Day 10

Arizona is repositioning a fetus for surgery. She finishes and Herman says that's the fastest she's seen someone do that. She asks if Arizona wants to do the rest of the procedure once they get the needle in. Arizona says yes, but she's not sure she should. She's only practiced a few times and she doesn't think she's there. Graham offers to assist. Herman tells him to take special note of what Arizona did. That's what being an experienced surgeon gains you, the wisdom to know your limitations. Arizona didn't let arrogance get in the way of patient care.

After surgery, Herman says good work to them and tells Arizona she'll take the lead on the next one, so she needs to be ready. Arizona celebrates.

Emily is back in the ER in extreme pain. Callie does an ultrasound of her upper arm. Callie says a little over a week post-op, it's still going to hurt from time to time, but she says she can't eat or sleep. The pain comes in shocks 2-3 times a minute. Callie says she's run every test and nothing is coming up. Emily says she can't live like this and begs Callie to do something.

Callie goes into a supply room, shuts the door, and knocks some supplies off a shelf. Meredith peeks out from behind a shelf and is shocked. Callie apologizes and Meredith asks if she's okay. Callie says she's obviously not okay and why can't Meredith just ask what's wrong or what she can do to help. Meredith says she has her own stuff. Callie apologizes and says she has no one to talk to. Meredith asks her if she's on call. She says she's not.

Meredith and Callie are sitting at the bar doing shots. Callie explains what she's doing with Arizona. Meredith says it's exactly what she's doing with Derek, only healthy. They make fun of their spouses. Callie says it's LGBTQ for a reason. The B isn't for badass. Well, it is, but it also means bisexual. Meredith reminds Callie that her mother and Richard were doing it all over the hospital and says it's like her and Derek when he was married to Addison. She says she's a legacy cheater. Callie wonders if Sofia will be a legacy cheater because both of the people she's been married to have cheated on her. Meredith say Cristina was the third rail in her marriage. Dangerous, fully charged, could kill them, but necessary to keep going. She asks if it's possible that her own true love in life was a girl. Callie asks if Cristina's vagina excites her. She says no, so Callie says no. They sing about vaginas. Callie says it's a pretty word and people should say it more. Then she says she misses sex. Meredith says she's hot and her husband is an idiot. They do another shot together. Meredith says it might come back up.

Callie wanders into the house and to her room, but before she enters, she turns and goes to Arizona's room. She sees Arizona sleeping on the bed with reading material on top of her. The door creeks, which wakes Arizona. Callie walks into the room and sits down on the bed next to Arizona without saying a word. After a few moments of hesitation, they kiss and then start making out. After a few seconds, Arizona pulls back and they both sigh.

Dawson asks if they broke the rules. Callie says no, they didn't have sex. They just kissed and somehow stopped. She mentions that Arizona had a big surgery with Herman that day and all she wanted to do was ask Arizona how it went. Arizona, in a separate session from Callie, says they didn't have sex. Dawson says it was close enough. Arizona says that now she wishes they hadn't stopped. She asks what happens now. Dawson says that in order for it to work, they have to follow the rules for the full 30 days. So now they have to go back to the start.

Day 1

Arizona asks Alex when he plans to do Lee's anastomosis. Alex says he should be ready in a day or two. He says he's pulling about two mm each day. Arizona says it's safer to do just one. Alex asks why she's even in there. Arizona asks if he knows what she's doing. She explains the surgery to him. She watches him turning the device and reminds him to pull gently. She says her job will make his obsolete. He then accidentally pulls too hard and breaks the device.

They talk to Lee's parents about what happened and say it'll set them back a few days. Alex says it's a minor complication. Lee's dad says that Kate hasn't held her son once. and it's been hard on her. Alex apologizes, but Chase says that Arizona should be apologizing, because she was supposed to do the surgery, but she passed it off. Arizona says that Alex is able, but Chase says that he knows that Alex is awesome, like she said, but now Lee's chest has been cut open twice, so he doesn't share her opinion. Arizona apologizes to Alex, but he turns around and says he never should have let her talk him into a surgery he didn't believe was the best choice. He says last time he checked, he was the attending and she was a fellow, so he tells her to stop overstepping and get the hell off his floor.

Day 16

Callie and Meredith are operating on David. The damage is so severe that Callie wonders how he hasn't already broken his femur. Meredith asks her how the break is going. When Callie asks her to be subtle, she uses the word diet instead. Callie says she's back on track, no more late night binges. She almost had a cheeseburger, but she didn't, which was rough because she likes cheeseburgers and misses them. Meredith says Derek wants one every single night, but she tells him he can't have one until the end of the year, so he should sleep on the couch. Meredith says at least her diet has an end date and imagine how good that cheeseburger will taste at the end. Callie notices that the blood supply to David's hip is completely gone. A hip replacement won't survive in there.

They explain to David's wife that they removed the tumor, but couldn't do the hip replacement, so he has no hip. He won't be able to get up and get out of bed. They have to find a permanent solution. But they got the tumor and it won't cause David any more problems. His wife dismisses herself to be with him. Callie tells Meredith she's having the worst month, but Meredith knows what she needs.

Back at the bar, a waitress puts a burger on the table between them. Callie says Meredith is so smart. They'll have to split the burger. Meredith splitting it gives Callie an idea. They can split David's fibula and use it to bridge the gap from the tumor resection. That'll allow them to keep his leg.

Back at the house, Arizona heads to bed and stops at Callie's room.

In Dawson's office, Arizona tells her that they broke the rules again. Dawson asks if they had sex. Arizona says no, but Callie didn't come home. Arizona thought that that meant that Callie was sleeping with someone else, which is against the rules. And also, the idea bugged her. Arizona also thought if she wasn't doing that, was she okay? And that thought bugged her even more. So she made Callie talk to her at the hospital. Arizona pulled Callie aside and asked her where she was. She says she was at the hospital. Arizona says she checked the call records for her name. Callie says that Arizona stalked her. Arizona says she was worried. She tells Arizona that she found a fix for a patient and came back to the hospital to work on it. Then it was late, so she slept in an on-call room.

Callie, in her own session, says Arizona was jealous. Irrationally, obviously jealous. She says it feels good to have someone be that jealous that you're cheating. Dawson says it's not the healthiest. But Callie says Arizona was worried about her and cared about her. She wonders if that means the break might actually be working.

Day 29

Callie and Meredith are working on David's surgery. A nurse tells Callie that after she's done in surgery, they need her down in the ER. She asks why.

Down in the ER, Emily is back in the hospital. She ran her car into a tree. Emily is begging them to let her die. Callie asks if she did it on purpose. Callie is upset, so she leaves the room. Derek follows her and asks what the deal is. Callie says how she fixed Emily's arm, but she's still in a lot of pain. She believes it's her own fault that Emily just tried to kill herself. Derek tells her to stop.

Derek and Callie look at Emily's scans. He shows her cysts in Emily's spine. She developed spinal epilepsy. Instead of seizures, she had spasms in her arm, which caused pain. He says he can fix it, but it's risky.

Herman is talking to Amelia about Addison. Herman is shocked that Addison has a toddler. Amelia says he's ruined her white walls and carpets. Arizona walks up and says she didn't know that Herman knows Addison. Herman just asks her if she finished rounding. Arizona says she did and Ms. Cane gave consent for her valvuloplasty and asks if she should schedule it. Herman says yes, and Arizona will take the lead. Graham will assist and Herman will observe. She says to be ready. Arizona says she will. She hesitates before leaving and Herman asks her if she needs something else. She says no. Amelia mouths an apology and Arizona walks away.

Arizona goes to see Lee and asks Jo how he's doing. She asks to see his latest scan. Jo's not sure she should show Arizona. Alex comes in and Arizona says she's leaving. Lee's his patient and it's his territory, so she's going.

Callie and Derek are operating on Emily. Callie says she never looked beyond the arm and now she may have gotten Emily hooked on pain meds and ruined her chances for culinary school.

At home, Arizona is practicing on one of her jello moms. Callie comes in the kitchen with a glass of wine. She sees Arizona straining her neck and comes up behind her and starts to massage her. Arizona says she needs to study. Callie says no talking and reminds her of the rules.

Back in their bedroom, Callie tosses Arizona back on the bed and crawls on top of her. Arizona says that tomorrow's the last day. Callie says they're close enough then. Arizona asks what if Dawson makes them start over. Callie says they just won't tell her and they continue to have sex.

Day 30

Arizona finds Herman and Graham and says she thought the Cane valvuloplasty was supposed to be the next day. Herman says it was, but there is fetal hydrops, so it has to happen immediately. She asks if Arizona's ready.

In surgery, Arizona takes the needle and goes to place it. Before she can puncture, Herman stops her. Herman says she hesitated. She asks Arizona if she's nervous. Arizona says yes, but... Herman asks why she's nervous. She asks if Arizona's not prepared. Arizona starts to defend herself, but Herman tells her to trade places with Graham.

After surgery, Herman takes Arizona to an on-call room where she says that there are only five fetal surgeons west of the Mississippi and she wanted Arizona to be the sixth, but Arizona is letting her down. She's questioning not only Arizona's abilities, but her own. She thought Arizona was special, but Arizona embarrassed her. She was unprepared for the second time. She doesn't know what's wrong, but she knows Arizona is behind and she doesn't have time for Arizona to catch up. She doesn't have time for three strikes. She says that if it happens again, Arizona's out and she leaves.

Post-op, Derek asks Emily if she has any pain. She says it's all gone. Emily says when her car hit that tree, her first thought was at least the pain is finally over. She can stop feeling sorry for herself. She thanks Derek and Callie because she finally feels like she might survive this.

Callie and Meredith watch as David starts walking with a walker. Meredith asks Callie what about her, because it's day 30. Callie says she's weirdly nervous. She feels good, but it feels like coming back from somewhere. Meredith says that even though the diet's over, she's always up for cheeseburgers and tequila. When Callie smiles, she clarifies that she means actual cheeseburgers.

Jo allows Kate to hold Lee for the first time. Alex says they were able to put his esophagus back together and it's stronger than ever. Chase hugs him as Arizona watches from the doorway.

Callie and Arizona are in the therapist's office. Arizona talks about how the 30 day period made her realize that while they still have a long way to go, she realizes she truly loves Callie. While the world around her is no longer making sense, including her professional life, she realizes she needs Callie as her anchor, one good thing in her life. Callie is sobbing as it's now her turn to talk. She was against the 30 day break at first, but looking back on that period, she has laughed and done and enjoyed herself more than she's done in a long time. She finally feels free, which made her see that trying to fix her relationship with Arizona all the time is what's been killing her slowly. She doesn't want to fix them anymore. Instead of loving Arizona so hard, she thinks she should be herself for a while. They should both love themselves and Sofia, rather than each other now. Callie wants so much for Arizona, for the both them. More than being stuck in a relationship with someone who feels stuck. While Callie's voice over says that some things can't be fixed, Callie says she wants Arizona to feel free too. She packs her stuff as Arizona remains speechless, and leaves the therapist's office.

Emily came into the ER with injuries to her arm after getting it caught in a noodle-making machine at work. Scans revealed that she would need surgery to insert a plate and screws. She was worried because she needed her arm to train for culinary school. A little over a week later, she was back in the ER with extreme pain in her arm. They couldn't find a cause for her pain, so she was sent back home. She said it felt like she was receiving shocks 2-3 times a minute. She came back into the ER after running her car through a guard rail into a tree. Derek suspected that she had spinal epilepsy. He did a DREZ procedure, which relieved her pain.

Lee Franklin[]

Lee was diagnosed with esophageal atresia at birth, a gap in his esophagus. In order to treat his condition, they had to attach Foker knobs to his back, which would stretch his esophagus until the two pieces could be sewn together. He was put into a coma for this process as he needed to remain perfectly still. When the process was almost complete, Alex accidentally pulled too hard, disconnecting the leads and setting them back. Despite this complication, they were able to finish stretching his esophagus and operate to connect the two pieces.

Jaclyn Werlein[]

Jaclyn was 23 weeks pregnant when an echo confirmed critical aortic stenosis. She was scheduled to have a valvuloplasty to open the aortic valve. The procedure was performed successfully.

David, 33, had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Meredith did a thyroidectomy, which left him cancer-free, until he came back into the hospital with hip pain. A PET scan revealed cancer in his hip. Callie believed she could remove the tumor, but she'd have to replace David's hip. However, in surgery, she discovered that the damage was too extensive and she had to remove the entire hip joint and he couldn't get a hip replacement because the blood supply to the area wouldn't support recovery. She placed an external fixator to keep his leg properly aligned on his body. Callie developed a plan which used David's fibula to graft blood into the area. She was then able to fix his leg in a way that would allow him to walk. He was then shown walking with a walker.

Ms. Cain was scheduled to have a fetal valvuloplasty for her fetus. It was supposed to be two days away, but when she developed hydrops, it was pushed up to be done immediately.

Dr. Herman: Yeah, well, looks like we won't see her on the conference circuit for a little while.
Dr. Herman: Do you know how many fetal surgeons there are west of the Mississippi river? Five. There are five of us. And I need a sixth, Robbins, so I picked you. Out of everyone, I handpicked you. And you are letting me down. I'm not just questioning your abilities. Now I'm questioning mine. I thought you had something. I thought you were special. You're the Chief of Pediatric Surgery. You're a member of the board, well-respected among peers. I thought you would be better and in less time. But today? Today, you embarrassed me. Today, you were unprepared for the second time. So I might have to rethink this, because you might not have what it takes here. I don't know what's wrong with you. I don't know what kind of demons you have. But I can tell you that you are behind in this fellowship, and I don't have time for you to catch up. I don't have time for three strikes. Something like this happens again, you're out.
Arizona: I understand why we did this. You know, it was to make us stronger, to make us better. And it did. I mean, I feel like it really did. It took a long time, and it was painful, and it sucked, but we've come a long way. And I know that we have further to go, but... I love you, Calliope. I love you. Life without you terrifies me. And the world is just making less and less sense, and, like, I don't know what I'm doing at work anymore, but the thing that I need is my anchor. It's you. I need you. And you're the only thing that I will ever need. And I'm so glad that this break is over.
Callie: The last 30 days have taught me so much. And all I wanted when we first came here was to know that we would leave together. But from the minute I sat down, I could feel it. I felt like I was gonna be suffocated. The last several weeks, I have laughed more, I have done more, I have enjoyed myself more than.... And I finally feel free. And by being free, I can see now that constantly trying to fix us is the thing that's been killing me slowly. And I don't want to do it anymore. I don't want to fix it or fix us anymore. Maybe instead of loving you so hard, I should... I should be myself for a while. I should love me, and you should love you, and together we love Sofia, rather than — I want so much for you, Arizona. For both of us. So much more than this. More than being stuck with someone who feels stuck. I want you to feel free, too.
(As Arizona is speechless, Callie leaves the therapist's office.)
