History[]
Early Life[]
In high school, Benson earned his nickname 'Blue' for being valedictorian, all state track & field, and a national chess champion. While attending college, his mother became seriously ill and his grades slipped. Consequently, Benson attended medical school in St Kitts as he was not accepted into any US medicine programs.
Internship at Grey Sloan[]
The day after a tornado hit Seattle, Benson started off his internship at Grey Sloan. He first met his fellow interns Lucas Adams, Jules Millin, and Mika Yasuda in the locker room. Lucas tried to make conversation until Benson scoffed at him and said he was liking his odds after sizing up the competition. Lucas was taken aback as he'd only said hello. The group then headed out to meet interim Chief Meredith Grey for her opening speech in the OR. She stressed that they had all been given a second chance because of their fight and life stories. Simone Griffith arrived late, prompting Meredith to advise the interns to learn how to expect the unexpected.
Afterward, Amelia Shepherd took the group of interns to the ICU to examine an inordinate number of patients who suffered catastrophic brain injury when the tornado blew a bus off of a cliff. Benson correctly answered her question on how to diagnose brain death.
To convince the mother of a brain-dead patient to approve organ donation, Kwan lied about having a brother who died in an accident and donated his organs.[2]
Personality[]
Benson "Blue" Kwan is sharp-witted, impatient and brilliant. He is generous by nature but competitive to a fault, naturally gifted, and used to winning at everything. A family crisis interfered with his career plans and now he's got a lot to prove.

Jules Millin[]
In the locker room after recording the sex ed videos, Benson and Jules shared a quiet and intense look. They then headed to an on call room, where Benson kissed Jules. After she assured Benson that it would not happen again, that there were no feelings involved and that she didn't like him, the two had sex.[3]
Molly Tran[]
He met Molly at a Halloween party. She was dressed as a giant disco ball, so he had to help her fit through the bathroom door by hugging her, but it looked "so dumb" that they ended up laughing. He remembers seeing her reflection on the tiny mirrors on the costume, thinking there was no view of her he didn’t like. They eventually got engaged, but he cheated on her, which led to her storming out and getting into a car accident during which she suffered memory loss, leading to their breakup.[4]
