Ellis Grey moved to Boston in 1983 after her split from Richard. She gave birth to Maggie Pierce and selected Bill and Diane Pierce as her adoptive parents. Meredith Grey grew up in the city and relocated to Seattle to start her residency at Seattle Grace Hospital. Both Jackson Avery and Maggie Pierce grew up in the city as well, albeit in different social circles. Maggie did her residency at Tufts Medical Center, where she trained Winston Ndugu, who continued to work there after completing his residency until he moved to Seattle as well.
Meredith, during her fifth year of residency, applied for a General Surgery Attending position at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She interviewed with Margaret Goodwin, who was very understanding of the reasons why Meredith's interview had been rescheduled multiple times due to Holly Wheeler case. The hospital offered Meredith the position, and she initially planned to accept it, but she declined following the plane crash and decided to stay at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital instead.
When Jackson decided to move back there to take on a bigger role within the Catherine Fox Foundation, he relocated with April Kepner and their daughter Harriet Kepner-Avery. Tom Koracick also moved to join the Foundation. Eventually, Jackson offered Meredith Grey a job to launch research into a cure for Alzheimer's disease. She accepted his offer and relocated back to the city with her children, Zola Grey Shepherd, Derek Bailey Shepherd, and Ellis Shepherd. She hired a tutor, Michael, for Zola.
Brookline Steam Academy, a school for intellectually gifted children with one of the best science programs in the country that is attended by Zola Grey Shepherd.
