The Cliffside Rescue is a rescue effort that commenced after a car containing Owen Hunt, Cormac Hayes, and Teddy Altman, along with their driver, went off a cliff.
Timeline[]
When a heart became available for Farouk Shami Hunt, Owen, Teddy, and Cormac went to retrieve it. They had retrieved the heart and were on their way back when their driver passed out and they crashed. Owen examined him and said it was most likely a stroke. None of their phones had a signal, so Teddy wanted to climb out. Owen told her not to move as they seemed to be in a ditch. Cormac looked out his window and told them not to move as they were inches from a cliff.
Teddy said once the hospital realized they weren't coming, they would send rescue, but by then, the heart wouldn't be viable anymore. Owen had Cormac break a window, but when Cormac moved to climb out, the car moved closer to the edge. They decided that two of them needed to stay in the car to keep the weight balanced and they debated whether Teddy or Cormac should be the one to climb out. While they talked, they realized the car was pulling the tree out of the ground. Teddy was able to climb out with the heart and she flagged down a car.
As the situation became more precarious, Owen told Cormac to climb out so that his kids wouldn't have to grow up without both their parents. He also made Cormac promise to continue his worth euthanizing the soldiers. Cormac climbed out and the car slid down the cliff with Owen still inside. ("It Came Upon a Midnight Clear")
Stations 19 and 23 of the Seattle Fire Department were called out to do Search and Rescue. They were unable to spot the car from the road. Andy took charge of the scene and had traffic blocked while they made a plan to get down to the car. Andy decided to send people and equipment down in waves to avoid putting too much pressure on the cliff. Not wanting to wait, Ben rappelled down the cliff, followed by Sullivan. They found the car. Owen was trapped inside, alive and responsive, but reporting pain in his legs and back. The first wave of rescuers arrived soon after. Maya disconnected the car battery and Ben helped Owen start his own IV. They then worked to remove a large branch that was impaled through the car and then cut the roof off the car. They were able to free Owen and then loaded him into a Stokes basket to be hauled up. Instead of letting him go, Ben hooked himself to the basket and was pulled up with him. Once Owen was back up at the road, Maya and Sullivan loaded him into the aid car and took him to the hospital. ("Started from the Bottom")
At the hospital, Owen was diagnosed with multiple fractures to his left leg, an L1 burst fracture, and a splenic laceration. They were able to repair his injuries and he was expected to make a full recovery. ("No Time to Die")
