Full Summary[]
Maya meditates with an app. She gets overwhelmed by memories of Carina. She gets up and walks around, then grabs her phone and calls Carina. She gets Carina's voicemail and leaves a message.
Carina walks into the station. She sees that she has a voicemail, but sticks her phone back in her pocket. Ben greets her and gives her coffee. She admits that she almost didn't make it inside, but Ben celebrates that she did. Jack comes over and welcomes Carina back with a hug. He asks how Maya is and how she and Maya are. Carina says they're not okay, but the work they do at the clinic is important, so she's not giving up on it.
Andy asks Travis what's next on the campaign trail. He talks about an upcoming event with a mechanical bull. Vic says he needs to ride it and she and Andy taunt him about it. Eli comes in with bagels. When Andy questions his outfit, he says he had a meeting and promises his sneakers are in his bag and he's ready for his ride-along. Andy insults his bagels and tells him he's late because for a firefighter, 15 minutes early is on time. Travis is upset to learn Eli didn't bring cream cheese.
Theo calls Vic over to look at the research he's done into the fires in his old neighborhood. When Beckett comes through, Theo shows him what he's found. He wants to go around and do inspections to get ahead of the fires. Beckett says he's free to investigate everything he wants.
Ben calls for Pam Williams. When he sees that she's pregnant, he assumes she's there for Carina. She tells him Peggy and Dayna referred her to the clinic. He leads her back to a bay and promises to send Carina in.
Andy gives Eli the waiver to sign. Travis hopes it won't get too hectic for him, but Eli says the more hectic, the better. They need another hero moment to give to the press. He'd like Travis to catch a baby being thrown from a fire. Eli looks at the waiver and is hesitant about signing it. When the klaxons sound, Andy says he can sign it or he can stay behind. He signs it and goes with them.
Vic tells Theo not to stress. Her parents used to get violations in their restaurant all the time and it was people trying to shut them down to make way for other things. Theo insists he's fine. He tells her about a laundromat that sold anything you could imagine.
Carina listens to Maya's voicemail, which says Maya's getting help from Diane and thinks it's working. She asks to see Carina and says she can be better.
Sullivan meets Vince at the door. He notices Vince smells strongly of alcohol, but Vince says that's not the problem and shows Sullivan the burns on his chest. He leads Vince to a bed.
Carina asks Pam how she heard about the clinic and Pam explains that Dayna and Peggy are her neighbors and they sing Carina's praises. Carina also thinks highly of them. Pam confirms this is her first pregnancy and she's doing it on her own because she got tired of waiting, like a honeybee. She's an entomologist. Carina asks if she has specific concerns and she says she's not certain her OB is listening to her. She wants to make sure nothing gets missed. Carina offers to run tests and do an ultrasound, which is more than Pam expected to get at a fire station. She was warned that Carina was a great beauty and thought she'd prepared herself, but Carina is literally glowing. Carina says Pam is glowing as well, but Pam thinks she's just saying that because she's pregnant.
Vince says he doesn't know what happened because he was blackout drunk and woke up like that. After a few weeks, he still hadn't healed. Sullivan said his alcohol consumption could contribute to slow healing. They learn he'd an Army veteran who served 30 years. Jack asks how long his abdomen has been swollen and he claims it's just a beer belly. Jack says that's not what it is.
Vic and Theo arrive at Silva & Sons Barbershop, where Theo is enthusiastically greeted by Tomás and José Ortega, among others. Theo introduces Vic. Mr. Ortega was his teacher and he and his wife also owned the laundromat he told her about, but it's closed now. Tomás wants to give Theo a haircut, but Theo's working. Vic tells Theo to go ahead and get the cut while she gets started.
Eli plays with things on their way to the scene and Andy warns him not to break anything. They arrive at their scene, where two teen boys are fighting. One of them, Morgan, is dressed as a duck. Joanie is trying to break up the fight. Travis and Andy separate them. They're angry that Joanie called the cops, which she did because their last fight landed them in the hospital. Morgan is angry that Joanie left him for Todd. They start taunting each other, so Andy takes Morgan while Travis takes Todd.
Ben advises Vince to get himself to the ER to get the fluid drained out of his abdomen once they've treated his burns. Vince is opposed to that because the ER will send him to detox and he doesn't want to go. Beckett calls Jack away from Vince and tells him to send Vince to the hospital. Jack says he doesn't want to go and they can't just kick him out when he needs help. Beckett thinks that's stupid.
Tomás tells Vic stories about Theo while she looks around the shop. Theo used to idolize Tomás and try to copy him. Through the conversation, they realized Theo and Vic are dating and congratulate him.
Joanie says she's done with teen boys and will instead date grown men who don't get into physical fights and try to control her. Andy says she's in for a rude awakening. Joanie goes to Travis and asks if he's single. Todd claims he was defending Joanie's honor, but she says he was just mad that Morgan said hi to her. He says he's made she said it back. Joanie tries to walk away. Todd claims he was just kidding and tells her not to be a bitch. Andy gets between the two of them and pushes him back. Joanie turns around and swings her fist, but hits Eli, who was coming over to help. Eli falls to the ground and complains os his nose and his shoulder hurting. Joanie apologizes.
Andy and Travis help Eli up. He's grossed out by blood. Andy says his nose doesn't look broken and takes him to get cleaned up. Travis asks Morgan and Todd if they've had enough when they start blaming each other. He says they can call their parents to come get them or he can call the cops to come get them. They race to pull out their phones.
Carina shows Pam her baby's head and toes. She asks if Pam wants to know the sex. Pam decides not to. She worries she's going to be a bad mom, so Carina reassures her. Pam asks if she has kids. Carina says not yet, but she's been going through the insemination process, too. Pam asks if she's married. Carina says she is and she has a feeling that Pam will be great at parenting.
Jack asks Ben if he thinks Carina is spending too much time with her patient. Ben doesn't see an issue with it and thinks Carina's just being a good doctor. Jack points out that Carina's touching Pam's arm.
Vic tells Tomás that he has too many things plugged into a single power source. Tomás tries to placate her, but she says it has to go. Theo explains that it could cause a fire. Tomás says he'll fix it. He doesn't want his place to be the next fire. Mr. Ortega thinks the unhoused people looking for heat are causing the fires, but Tomás doesn't agree. He's asked around and it seems like there are new people going around looking to buy people's property. He thinks they're being smoked out. Theo promises to take his concerns seriously. Vic asks if she can look back in the back room and Tomás says she can.
Sullivan brings Vince a drink and they realize he's coughing up blood, which he dismisses. He's just there for the burns. Outside the bay, Beckett tells Ben and Sullivan their work won't make Vince any better. He tells them to send him to the hospital.
Carina tells Pam that everything looks great so far. They're just waiting for her glucose results. She asks if Pam has any other questions or concerns. Pam asks if Carina's still trying to get pregnant. Carina says she and her wife are separated. Not legally, just taking time apart, and that's put a pause in the insemination attempts. It's okay, though. They needed the time apart. Pam asks if she's still going to have a baby if they don't get back together. Carina says she wants to be a mom more than anything and everything that comes with that, but her wife was a big part of that dream. She finds what Pam is doing brave. Pam decides she hates surprise and asks Carina to tell her the sex. Carina tells it's a boy and they celebrate.
Vic and Theo have found lots of extension cords running through Theo's shop. She says this is a big deal. He asks her to let him do the talking. He goes out and tells Tomás what they found and says he has to take them down. Tomás says he keeps burning fuses and needs more power. He'll call an electrician next week. Vic says they have to take care of it today to pass the inspection. Theo tells her he'll handle it. It's between him and Tomás. Tomás says he just needs a week. Vic says it's a safety hazard and starts to unplug things, killing power to the shop. Theo tells Vic they don't turn their backs on people where he's from and he can't understand why she's doing that. Vic says she's just trying to do her job and questions how close Theo could be to people she's never heard of until the last week.
Beckett questions Ben about why Vince is still at the station. Ben says he has fluid build-up in his abdomen, a sign of liver disease. He agrees it would be best for Vince to go to a hospital, but Vince won't go. Beckett wants them to force him. When they won't, he says he will. He then admits that Vince is his uncle.
Andy tells the teens they need to stop fighting because when you're older, it's assault. Morgan starts to faint, so they get him some water and start to take off his costume. They see that the cage on the inside of the costume has impaled his abdomen. They sit him down and apply pressure while Eli takes deep breaths.
Pam says she always pictured herself having a girl, but now she can't imagine not having a boy. Carina says she has a little brother and she always imagined herself having a boy. It just feels right. Pam says Peggy and Dayna were relieved to have a girl because Peggy couldn't imagine having a penis in their house. Carina says they're a good team. Pam wants a partnership like that. Carina offers Pam some pamphlets.
Outside the bay, Jack keeps passing back and forth. He asks Ben what he thinks they're laughing about. Ben tells Jack to check on her if he's that concerned. Jack wants to remind Carina she's married. Ben says Maya kicked Carina out, but Jack knows she didn't mean it. Ben tells Jack not to go in there after all.
Theo is working on Tomás's fuse box. Vic looks at it and sees that the fuses are just ten amps, which is why they keep blowing. It used to happen at the restaurant all the time. Once she gets the new fuses in, she turns on the power. Inside the barbershop, they celebrate. Vic asks Theo if he should sit out on inspections and calls in the neighborhood. She thinks he's too close to it. He says she doesn't get it. She admits she doesn't, but they fixed the fuse box, so Tomás will pass his inspection.
Vince didn't think Beckett had it in him to captain a whole station. Beckett asks where he's been. Vince looks and sounds like his own father. Vince says he didn't want to be a bother to anyone. Beckett says he wouldn't have been. Vince says he just doesn't want help.
Andy lets the hospital know they're coming in with Morgan. Eli tries to redirect Andy, but she drives to the hospital a lot. In the back, Travis treats Morgan, who can't even feel his injuries. Travis says he'll be a legend at school. Suddenly, Morgan crashes and Travis says he'll have to intubate if they don't get to the hospital in a minute.
Vic explains what they did to Tomás. He'll pass his inspection, but he can't overload the fuses again. Tomás apologizes to Vic and wants her to make things right with Theo as well. Vic says it's good, but no more extension cords. They say goodbye and leave.
Carina says Pam can come back in a few weeks if she's still up in the air about an OB or Carina can take her on as a regular patient. Pam says that won't be a good idea as she finds Carina attractive. Carina thanks her for the mood boost. Pam goes to leave, but stops and asks Carina to go out with her. Carina hesitates and Pam apologizes. She's not trying to take advantage of Carina's tough time. Carina says she appreciates the offer. Pam asks if that means they have a date.
Jack and Ben watch the interaction from above. Ben still thinks it's nothing.
Eli is panicked about what happened and how they treated it like it was any everyday thing because it is.. Travis gets off the phone with Teddy, who says Morgan is stable. Eli is relieved. He has a newfound respect for the firefighters. The firefighters share stories of other calls that were rough. Eli is shocked that that's a regular day for them.
Vic finds Theo poring over documents. He's comparing arsons with statements. She wants to know what happened at Tomás's. He was just willing to let major fire hazards go when their safety was the reason for going out there in the first place. Theo says he wasn't going to let it go, but he wanted to help. Vic's never seen him like that before. Theo says it's how he gets in the old neighborhood. Theo says the guy he is in the old neighborhood couldn't be a firefighter. Vic gets it, but wishes Theo could be himself around her sometimes. She says the neighborhood triggers him, which he agrees with.
Vince asks Beckett not to tell their family. He doesn't want anyone to worry. Beckett says they're beyond that. Beckett thought he had died because he didn't see Vince for so many years. Vince asks Beckett how he's doing because he doesn't look good and Beckett men are cursed with drink. Beckett insists he's fine, so Vince tells him not to look for comfort in a bottle. Beckett wants Vince to let them take him to a hospital and offers to let Vince stay with him after he gets discharged so he doesn't have to go to detox. If he doesn't get medical care, he won't have much time left. Vince says it's too late for him. He tries to leave, but collapses and has a seizure. Ben calls for an aid car.
Theo calls arson investigation and asks them to look at the fire. He wanted to be sure as there was a second explosion with no obvious cause.
Sullivan checks on Beckett, who says he's fine and Vince was admitted for observation. Sullivan says Vince served 30 years, double Sulllivan's time. Beckett's coming up on 20 years for the fire department. In the military, they call 30 years a lifer and a lot of them end up hitting the bottle because of what they've seen. He says he's sorry about Vince and hopes he gets help or at least some rest. He congratulates Beckett on his almost 20 years. Once he leaves the office, Beckett locks the door, closes the blinds, and drinks.
Jack asks Ben if they should give Maya a head's up. Ben says there's nothing to tell her. Carina was just treating a patient. Jack thinks it's more than that. Ben tells him to stop gossiping. Jack's worried he's losing his family after fighting so hard to get back. Ben says marriage has it's ups and downs and Jack isn't losing his family.
Andy goes to take a shower, but finds Eli in the bathroom. Travis told him he could clean up in there. Eli thinks they're superheroes for what they do. He might have to complain, though, because the waiver said nothing about being punched by a teen girl. Andy says no one told him to get in the middle of it. He was trying to defend Andy. He'll reconsider his complaint if Andy agrees to let him take her out. She says okay. Eli says he'll be in touch about it. He's awkward around her as he gets ready to leave. Andy gets in the shower.
Carina comes home. When Maya hears her, she gets up. Carina says she's just there to pick up a few things because she can't use hotel shampoo anymore. She goes into their bathroom to get some as Maya says she could come home. She says she misses Carina. Carina says she got Maya's voicemail and listened to it. Maya knows she made mistakes and scared Carina. She says she's sorry and she loves Carina and she'll be better. Carina reminds her she said that. Maya says she means it. Carina says she needs more time. Seeing her in the hospital, what she did to herself, Carina can't just jump back into it. She spent the better part of a year begging Maya to get help. She's happy for Maya, but this is just another thing she did to keep her job. She opens the door and walks out with the things she gathered.

Rescues[]
Pam Williams[]
Pam came to the clinic to see Carina as she was pregnant. She'd had bad experiences with her OB, so she wanted to get a second look. Carina offered to run tests and do an ultrasound. All of her tests came back good and Carina told her she was having a boy. Carina offered to have her come back in a few more weeks for her next round of tests or to take her on as a patient permanently. Pam declined that offer because she was attracted to Carina.
Silva & Sons Barbershop[]
Theo and Vic went to Tomás's barbershop to do an inspection. Vic quickly noticed he had too many things plugged into extension cords. Tomás said he would get more power strips because he didn't want a fire. In the supply room, they found that he was running extension cords from his shop into his apartment. He told Theo he kept blowing fuses and needed more power. He promised to call an electrician in a week, but Vic said he would fail the inspection if it wasn't fixed. Theo went to replace Tomás's fuses. Vic realized the problem was that he was exceeding the amperage of the fuses. She was able to restore power to his shop. Vic told Tomás they'd fixed the problem and told him how to prevent it happening again.
Vince Beckett[]
Vince came into the clinic. He was drunk, but said the burns on his chest were the problem. Sullivan led him into an exam room, where he said he didn't know how it had happened, but it had been a few weeks and it wasn't healing as he expected. Jack also observed that his belly was swollen, so Ben came to examine him and told him he should go to the hospital after they treated his burns because he had fluid build up that needed to be drained. Vince insisted he was fine and didn't want to end up in a detox clinic. Vince started coughing up blood, but again said was nothing and he was only there for the burns. Ben said he had cirrhosis and Beckett told them to send him to the hospital. They said he wouldn't go and Beckett tried to get them to force him. Beckett then stepped in himself, but Vince still refused help. As he went to leave, Vince had a seizure. They took him to the hospital, where he was admitted for observation.
Fight[]
Travis and Andy responded to a domestic call and arrived to find Morgan and Todd fighting over Joanie, who had dumped Morgan for Todd. Travis took Todd to get his bloody nose treated while Andy tried to get Morgan calmed down. Things escalated again when Todd told Joanie not to be a bitch. She whipped around to punch him, but hit Eli instead, bloodying his nose. Andy looked at him and said it didn't look like it was broken. Travis talked to the teens and said they needed to calm down and they could either call their parents or he would call the cops. Morgan started to feel faint, so they thought he was overheated. They helped him take off his duck costume and found he had been impaled on the cage and was bleeding. They put him in the aid car and took him to the hospital. On the way, Travis had to intubate. After they'd returned to the station, they found out he was stable at the hospital.
