Full Summary[]
In the barn, the team cleans the rigs while Beckett gets interviewed about the incident. Theo asks Vic if she told them about the missing kerosine canisters. She says she told them what she saw. Theo says Cooper died because of Beckett's negligence. They all know it, but are afraid to say it. Ben tells Andy the questions seemed standard. He thinks Beckett will get a slap on the wrist, but Andy thinks it'll be more than that. Theo wonders if they should follow a captain who is under investigation. Ross comes in and gathers them to her. She says the investigation is routine and will make sure it doesn't happen again. It's important that they're honest and transparent. She tells them to have a great shift.
Maya comes in and asks Ben if she's late. Ben tells her everyone who was at the training was called in early. She asks Ben if Beckett was drunk when he made a mistake that led to the death of a firefighter. Ben says they don't know for sure that he made a mistake, which is why they're investigating. As far as Ben knows, he's been sober for a while. That's why he's been so cranky. Ben asks if she knows something he doesn't. Maya's just sad that someone died. They know the risks, but this shouldn't have happened. Ben asks what's going on with her and Carina. She says they're not not talking, which he likes.
Andy admits to Vic that she kissed Eli. Vic knew that was going to happen. Eli is texting her. Vic takes Andy's phone and responds for her.
Ruiz asks Sullivan if he thinks they'll get rid of Beckett. Sullivan says the investigation means they'll do something. Right now, they're gathering information. They hear laughter and look up to see Beckett shaking hands with Josh Mesnik. Beckett leans over the railing and tells Sullivan he's next.
Travis ignores his phone. It's Eli. Travis knows Andy hates him, but his poll numbers are up because of Eli. Andy says she doesn't hate him. She stumbles over her words as she says she hates politics and Travis used to as well. Travis's phone rings and he takes Eli's call.
Station 19 is called out. Vic recognizes the address. It's Theo's old neighborhood. He says it's Tomás's shop. She offers to swap with him because she's on desk, but he says he's fine.
Theo notices Beckett's hands shaking and wonders if Beckett is drunk. Andy doesn't think he's dumb enough to do that. Maya thinks he's drinking. Andy says maybe he's shaking because he hasn't had a drink. Maya admits that she bought him a bottle when she was a mess. She knows it was bad. Theo doesn't think it's safe to follow Beckett into a fire. Andy has a plan.
At the scene, they watch as five people emerge from the fire. Maya sends them to triage. Beckett drops his tablet as he gets out and asks Andy what's happening as she starts to give orders.
Sullivan tells Ben that Andy's taking over. Ben's not sure it's a good idea because they could all get fired. Sullivan says they have to be in it together. He agrees he's in.
Beckett tells Andy they're not doing this. She says she won't let him put them in danger.
Travis defends Andy when Beckett comes at her. Beckett doesn't think Andy should be in command. Andy tells him not to make it more difficult. He insists he's not drunk. Andy ignores him and continues to give orders. When he threatens to call the chief, Andy says to call her. Beckett tells her she'll regret it.
Ross enters Captain Mesnik's office. He stands at attention and she tells him to relax. He says he's old school and ex-military. She tells him she's the same. She's glad he's on the investigation and asks if he's getting what he needs. He says everyone has been cooperative. When she asks about Beckett, Mesnik says he can always be counted on because he's old school like them. Mesnik is relieved it's looking like a no-fault. There's nothing that can be directly pinned on Beckett if it comes to that. Ross says that's good for her to know. She thanks him and leaves. Outside Mesnik's office, Ross makes a call.
Vic sees Carina entering the station and helps her with the door. She has stuff that could have waited for the next clinic day, but she wanted to see Maya. Carina says it's like she has a crush. It's like the beginning of the relationship when no one knows where they stand, so they're nervous, but at the same time, they're married. It's stressful. Vic says she likes it, but Maya's on a call. Carina's disappointed, but goes to stock the supplies. As she goes upstairs, Diane comes in. Vic's happy to see her, which is unusual. Vic tells her she's started her psych course. Diane knows the teacher and finds him attractive. She knows Vic feels the same. She's glad they can talk like this now because they're equals.
Theo asks Tomás if this happened because of the extension cords. Tomás promises he did what Theo and Vic said. He doesn't know what happened. Tomás realizes Mr. Ortega isn't out there. Theo tells Andy, who radios the others to let them know. They try to enter, but the entrance is blocked. They need another way in.
Theo says there's an alley behind the shop and they can access the shop from there.
Behind the shop, they find a lot of things piled up, blocking their way. They move them and make their way to the door. There's a metal security gate, so they'll have to bust through it.
Tomás is upset that Theo is there with him instead of looking for Mr. Ortega. Mrs. Ortega arrives and asks about her husband. Tomás explains and she is upset that they left him inside. She tells Theo to go in and get him. Theo says he can't because his job is to tend to them. He has to stop her from going inside herself.
Vic is frustrated that so few people have been trained. Carina comes out of the day room and confirms that Diane is Maya's therapist Diane. She goes back in the room and Diane says she feels bad. She knows Carina wants insight on Maya, but Diane can't tell her anything. Carina comes back out and asks Diane how he's feeling about the situation. Diane says she can't. Carina just needs something because she's losing it. Diane gives her three questions. If she can answer them, she will. The first is confirming that Diane's offer is genuine. Carina asks if Maya is doing clinically better. Diane asks what a yes would mean to Carina. It would mean they're getting somewhere. Diane says they're getting somewhere. Next, Carina asks if they'll make it through this. Diane can't answer that, but Carina wants her to. What Diane can say is that you can't go through what they've gone through without thinking and feeling different things on the other side. If they want to be together, they need to find a together that works for them. Carina says she thinks Diane is saying they're breaking up. Diane says she isn't. What she's saying is that they need to figure out what they want and need and what that looks like. Then they have to ask for it. Carina's head hurts, which Vic says always happens with Diane.
They're still working on the security door in the back. Andy says the fire is progressing and they don't have a lot of time. Mrs. Ortega hears this and is upset. Theo says they all have jobs to do and his is to stay with her. She accuses Theo of leaving and not caring about the old neighborhood. Suddenly, Beckett runs by in his gear and jumps through the door.
Beckett lands roughly. He gets up and starts looking for Mr. Ortega.
Diane and Vic are working on paperwork when they hear a car horn honk. They run out to the barn to find a car with a deer on the hood.
Vic and Diane run to the car and check on the driver, Monica. She just learned to drive. She didn't know what to do, so she just kept driving, but she hit a lot of things on the way to the station. Diane and Vic assess her from outside the car. They need more help, so Vic calls for Carina.
Andy tells the team that Beckett's inside. She tells them to get through the door.
Ross takes a call from Josh. She tells him another person will be taking over the investigation and says she thinks it'll help them get a clearer picture of what happened to have two opinions.
Carina tries to calm Monica down. She says Monica is lucky, but Monica doesn't feel lucky with antlers inside her body. Monica says she's not in much pain. They give Monica safety glasses. She says this is why she didn't want to learn to drive. She was older when she learned to drive, so all she could think about was the danger. Vic has Monica look away and Diane pries the door open.
Beckett finds Mr. Ortega under rubble. He pulls it off and starts to pull Mr. Ortega out, but has to stop. He takes off his SCBA and put his mask on Mr. Ortega. Then he uses a fire extinguisher, but it has little effect. He takes off his jacket and puts it on top of Mr. Ortega, then lies down on the floor next to him.
Diane says Monica is stable, but they need to secure the antlers before cutting them. Monica wants them out, but Carina says it's not safe to remove them outside the hospital. Monica's starting to feel more pain, so Vic gives her medication. Carina uses gauze to secure the wound. Vic distracts Monica by asking where she grew up. Monica says New York. She's a city person, but she fell in love. Her husband was a businessman in New York, but he sold his startup and wanted to move home to Seattle. She agreed because she was in love. If he told her at the beginning, she would have chosen the city.
They breech the security door, then used battering ram to get inside. They take a hose and step inside. They find Beckett and Mr. Ortega. Mr. Ortega is evacuated, but Beckett hesitates before going with Sullivan.
They bring Mr. Ortega to the front and put him on a gurney. Theo tells Mrs. Ortega to give them space. Theo says he's not sure how he is, but she needs to let them treat him. Tomás holds her as she watches them wheel him away.
Vic says they'll have Monica free soon. Diane starts cutting the antler, but the deer moves and they all scream. Carina was sure he was dead because she checked his pulse. Diane checks again and says he's dead. It was just a muscle spasm. Monica is scared that it might happen again. Vic tells her it won't. She says they need to cut the antler to get her out. Diane starts cutting.
Theo tries to put a mask on Beckett, but he pushes it off. Mr. Ortega is loaded into an aid car. Theo tells Mrs. Ortega they'll take him to Grey Sloan. Tomás offers to drive her, saying what's left of his barbershop will be there when he gets back. Ben tells Beckett he needs to go to Grey Sloan. He objects, but Ben insists. He helps Beckett up.
Theo watches the barbershop burn. Then he looks at Beckett in the aid car and nods. Theo looks around at the neighborhood.
Monica is on a gurney. She says she can't do this. She means living in Seattle. She can't deal with this being her life. She loves her husband and knows he loves her. Diane says she's sure he'll agree to live wherever she wants after this. Monica says it's more than that. Her gut tried to warn her and she didn't listen. She loved her life in the city, more than she loves her husband. She has to go home. Vic says she should talk to her husband first and tell him what she needs. Monica thinks they're past that. They saved her life and she needs to make her life feel like her own again.
As they ride back to the station, the firefighters are in disbelief that that actually happened. Theo says Andy's leadership got them through the day. They'll get through tomorrow too. They did what they needed to do and they're all live. They wonder why Beckett did what he did. Sullivan's seen it before, in a soldier who ended up walking directly into enemy fire. What Becket did wasn't bravery.
They load Monica into an aid car. Vic says she'll feel better soon. She thanks them. The aid car leaves and Diane celebrates being back in the action. She forgot the rush. As she celebrates, Carina starts crying. She wonders if she's being an idiot, ignoring her gut. She wonders if she'll be an antler. She wonders what she is in Monica's situation. Diane calms her down. Carina asks if she's just signing up for more pain. Vic says she doesn't think that's what's happening. They're both working really hard. Maya is seeing Diane. Carina thinks that's just so she can keep her job, but the department only required Diane's first visit. Maya kept seeing her for Carina, for both of them. Vic tells Carina to ask her the question Diane wouldn't answer before. When she doesn't, Vic asks it. She knows Maya and Carina will make it through this and they'll be better for it. Carina gets paged to deliver a baby. Vic asks if an antler could do that. She realizes she's not making sense, but they had an exhausting day. They celebrate again and Carina leaves. Diane and Vic dance together. Vic invites Diane to stay for dinner. She thinks they're having venison.
When the team gets back to the station, Vic comes in, excited to tell them about what happened, but realizes they're in bad moods. Vic goes to Theo. He says the barbershop is a total loss, but Tomás is fine. Vic reminds him she offered to swap, but he says he didn't need it. He brushes her off. Travis tells Vic what happened on the call. Ross comes in and yells at them. She says the situation was being handled. She's upset with the hubris they've shown. She doesn't know where it start, but it stops now. They violated protocol and it might have cost them all their jobs.
Ross asks for someone to explain what happened. Andy tells her Beckett appeared drunk. They all start talking over, so she stop them. This is what she's talking about. Andy asks for permission to speak. She tells Ross that Beckett was drunk. They all bet their careers on that. They knew what they were doing, but know if they went another way, they wouldn't be standing there. They'd be making funeral arrangements. They want to be safe so they can keep doing what they love. Ross appreciates her calm statement, but that doesn't excuse her actions. Ross gets a call and she leaves to deal with it. She wants them all out of her sight.
Travis says it was their only option. Andy says it wasn't. There were other things they could have done, but they made a choice and now they have to live with it. It was bad form. Vic has no words, which is a first. Andy's glad Vic wasn't there because at least one person won't be fired. Vic doesn't think they'll be fired. They were in the right.
Maya is sitting at the counter staring at her phone. Ben comes in and asks her what her wife thinks about the situation. Maya says they're not at the griping about bad days at work stage and they're definitely not at help with the landslide in my head because it's my fault stage. Ben questions that. He heard about her giving Beckett alcohol. She thinks she's a monster. There's a direct line between someone's death and her cruelty. The whole time she was doing it, she felt like she was winning. Ben says she basically had a nervous breakdown. She wasn't in her right mind. She still blames herself for Cooper's death. Ben says they don't know that. Maya says they could be fired because of what she did. Ben says she was in a terrible place and she's worked very hard to get herself out of it. Maya says she has to talk to Ross and explain. The guilt is weighing on her, but Ben says that's how she can know she's a good person. If she weren't, she wouldn't feel like that. He agrees that Maya did an awful thing and says she can apologize for it, but Beckett has a disease. He needs help. If it weren't her bottle, it would have been another one. She has a part in it, but so does he. She didn't make him drink on the job. After Ben leaves, Maya picks up her phone and texts Carina.
Eli texts Andy a poem. She immediately texts back.
Sullivan asks Ross how her day was. She says she has to go check on Beckett at the hospital. He defends their actions. Beckett wasn't in a place to run a scene. Ross says he should know better. She's done discussing it and he's already been dismissed. Before he can walk away, she stops him and says she'll see him later. He doesn't think he'll be able to make it. He needs to go to a meeting. He's been missing them because of her, but he needs to prioritize it. Beckett comes in and says he checked himself out then in. He goes into his office and packs some things. He says he needs help. He talked to his union rep and took a leave an absence. He leaves his badge on the desk and walks out.

Barbershop[]
Station 19 was called out to 2624 Aldred Road. They arrived to find Tomás's barbershop on fire. Five people emerged from the building as they arrived and they were taken to triage. Andy put Jack and Maya on fire attack and Theo on Search and Rescue. At triage, Tomás said that Mr. Ortega was still inside. They tried to go in after him, but the front entrance was blocked. Theo said that they could get access through the back. There was a security door, so they had to work to breech it before they could get entry. While they were working on that, Beckett put on his gear and jumped through the main entrance. He began looking for Mr. Ortega. He found him, but was unable to get out with him, so he put his mask and jacket on Mr. Ortega and lay down next to him. Soon after, they breeched the back door. Once inside, they were able to get Beckett and Mr. Ortega out. Outside, Mr. Ortega was loaded onto a gurney and taken to the hospital. Beckett was given oxygen and also taken to the hospital. They were able to put out the fire, but the barbershop was a complete loss.
Monica[]
Monica drove herself to the station after hitting a deer. The antlers of the deer had impaled her abdomen. She said she wasn't in much pain despite this. They put safety glasses son her, then pried the door open. When Monica complained that the pain was getting worse, Vic gave her pain medication while Diane got a saw to cut the deer's antler to free her. As they prepared to start, the deer moved. They confirmed that it was dead and attributed it to a muscle spasm. Monica began to worry it would happen again. Vic calmed her down, then Diane cut the antler. They called an aid car that transported her to the hospital.
