Darren Riley is a patient who was in the hospital with drug-resistant pneumonia.

History[]

Darren was a smoke with pulmonary fibrosis who was in the hospital with drug resistant pneumonia. Since his SATs were low even with oxygen, Winston ordered high-flow oxygen and a CT. Later that day, he crashed and Winston had to put him on ECMO. It was unclear if he'd ever breathe on his own again. ("This One's for the Girls") Darren was able to be extubated, but remained on ECMO, unable to breathe on his own. An x-ray showed that his left lung was completely whited out and a CT confirmed that it was necrotic and needed to be removed. He was also told he'd have to stay in the hospital on ECMO until he received a lung transplant as his remaining lung wouldn't support him. He struggled with this as he wanted to get back to his job, as he said it was his whole life. ("You Make My Heart Explode")

Darren remained on ECMO until Winston said a lung had become available for him. While they waited, his pump malfunctioned and they were forced to convert to a hand crank while they waited for a replacement. They replaced the pump, but then his heart herniated into his chest where his lung had been removed. They pumped air into his chest, which stabilized him. He was then taken into surgery for his lung transplant, which was successful. ("Night Moves")

Career[]

He is a high school band director. His band won the state championship four years in a row. ("You Make My Heart Explode")

Notes and Trivia[]
