Full Summary[]
Judge H. Pendleton tells Andy she's being charged with first degree manslaughter for the death of Jeremy Benanti. He asks how she pleads. As her lawyer, Luisa Berrol, stand next to her, Andy pleads not guilty. Pendleton sets the trial for May 17 and bail at $100,000.
Jack meets Andy as she leaves the jail. She hugs him.
At her apartment, Andy unpacks. She sees an alert about an article that someone has written about her. As Jack, Travis, Maya, and Vic carry in her furniture, she reads several comments critical of her. Maya takes her phone out of her hand.
In her bedroom, Andy moves a lamp, but gets another alert and reads more comments, some supporting her and some blaming her.
The next morning, Andy wakes to yet another alert. She reaches for her phone, but Vic reaches around her and tells her not to read the comments. Andy wants to know what's being said about her, but Vic takes the phone and says none of it is true. Andy says Vic can stop babysitting her because she's fine, but Vic wants to stay at least until Andy stops punching her in her sleep. Andy asks if Vic has to sleep her bed, but that's how Vic knows she's still punching. Andy ushers Vic out of bed, saying she's finally meeting with Ross. She asks if Theo has gotten his re-assignment because she hasn't gotten hers. Vic gets quiet, which Andy knows isn't good. Vic then admits Theo got assigned to 19. She's sure that's why Ross called her in, but Andy knows that's unlikely. She's sure she's going to be suspended. Andy gets angry and rips the sheets off her bed. She asks for her phone back, but Vic refuses.
Vic is excited to have Theo at 19. They pass Sullivan in the day room, where he is folding laundry. Vic quietly tells Theo that he's been on laundry duty since Beckett found out Sullivan reported him for drinking. Vic presents Lieutenant Theodore Ruiz to Travis and Ben in the beanery. Travis says that his full name isn't actually Theodore, but Teodora, after his grandmother. When Vic and Theo get affectionate, Travis tells them no touching, but they don't need to touch to gross him out. Sullivan calls them all into the day room. On the television, they watch Michael Dixon announce that he's running for mayor, saying he's going to put the city back together. They're all horrified by the news. Travis thinks he can't win. Theo asks where Maya and Jack are and Vic says they look personal days. Travis continues to watch Dixon's announcement as Sullivan says that's Travis's father-in-law.
Carina looks in the mirror, then pulls up her shirt to reveal several small bruises on her abdomen. Maya calls out to her from the kitchen, saying she's burning the waffles. Carina takes a breath and then says she's coming.
In the kitchen, Maya drops a pan on the floor. She thinks she's more nervous than she realized. Carina says Maya shouldn't be nervous because she's the one getting turkey basted. But Carina specializes in this. Carina says today, she's the patient who is full of a month's worth of fertility drugs plus the hormones from last night's trigger shot. Despite this, she doesn't want to reschedule because they'd have to wait another month. Maya says there's no rush, but Carina reminds her they expedited the genetic testing and everything else. Maya says that's because they're excited. They need to do it today. Carina's tired of waiting for everything. Her green card appointment hasn't been set yet, but this, they can control. Nerves are not a bad thing. They hear a knock on the door and go to answer it. Jack is waiting with flowers, which he realizes was an odd choice. He steps inside.
Beckett watches from inside as Sullivan washes the ladder truck. Vic comes up to him and says she doesn't blame him for reporting Beckett, though she might be the only one. Vic asks if it was weird when he went back in to talk to the detectives. She felt a bit like she was being interrogated. Sullivan tells her Maya's probably didn't go the same way. Sullivan asks how Andy is and Vic says she's not thrilled to have Vic in her bed, a feeling Sullivan knows well. Vic is surprised to hear him make a joke. He's glad that Andy's not alone. Sullivan spots Elena Herrera walking in and asks if he can help her. She says she's looking for Andy. Vic says she needs to go through the department if she's a reporter, but she says she's not. Sullivan says Andy doesn't work there anymore. Elena asks how she could get in touch with her, but Sullivan says they can't tell her. Elena says she's Andy's mom.
Elena paces in the barn while Vic says they need to call Andy. Sullivan wonders if Andy can handle it, but Vic says that's not up to him to decide. Sullivan tells Vic to call her and he'll talk to Elena.
Sullivan asks if the station has changed a lot since she was there last. Elena says it has. Andy's told him stories. He knows what Andy knows about her story. Elena says Pruitt would be upset that everyone knew. Sullivan says it's not everyone. A shift is just close and he and Andy were married. Elena didn't know that Andy was married. Sullivan says it was fast and they're not together anymore. Elena apologizes for coming, saying she saw the news reports and just hopped on a plane. Sullivan tells her Andy's been through a lot and he's not sure her presence will go as she's hoping. Elena says she's not hoping for anything, just trying to make sure Andy's okay. The alarm goes off and the team rushes to head out. Sullivan says they'll call Andy and let her know Elena's there, which Elena appreciates. As Sullivan climbs into the aid car, Vic tells him she got Andy's voicemail.
Andy is waiting outside when Ross approaches and asks if she's habitually early like Ross herself. Andy isn't, but she was nervous. Ross tells her to come on up. Andy makes small talk, asking if Ross likes being chief. Ross asks if that's a goal of hers. Andy always dreamed of being captain of 19, but the dream always stopped there. It's like when you dream you've won the lottery, but then wake up. Ross says when she makes captain of 19, it'll be better than winning the lottery because she'll have earned it. She seems to be on her way there. Andy says Sullivan and her dad decided she wasn't ready to be made captain of 19 because she wasn't emotionally prepared after her friend died. She's sure her trial will also be used against her. Ross says they won't let that happen. Men overinvolving themselves in her life is a chronic issue, but Ross says that's everywhere. She's experienced it her whole career. Ross would rather change things from inside than from the outside. Andy says they look at the world very differently. Ross realizes she was supposed to stop at 42 on her way in and forgot. Andy asks what about her meeting and Ross says they can talk on the way.
On their way to the scene, Theo asks Travis if he wants to hit the batting cages since Vic will be staying with Andy again. When Travis doesn't answer, he suggests a strip club. Travis starts ranting about Dixon running for mayor. Theo thought his mood was about Emmett, but now realizes it's about big Dixon instead. Travis is upset that men like Dixon still have power. Theo says he can try to stop Dixon, but doesn't know how.
Captain Khalidi calls dispatch and says he doesn't have enough people to do search and rescue. Dispatch tells him 19 should be there soon. He greets them and says he needs them on search and rescue. Beckett asks if anyone has been inside yet and Khalidi says no, one one's been on the c side yet. Beckett tells his team to suit up and head to the c side of the building.
Maya and Carina lead Jack into the room they have set up for him. Whale sounds are playing from a speaker. Carina's used to being the doctor in this situation. She's never been on this side. Maya adds that they weren't sure if he would need porn. Jack says no. He has his phone. Carina switches to her doctor voice and tells him he needs to sanitize his hands really well and shows him the cup he'll be using to collect his sample. She and Maya will be in the next bedroom preparing Carina. Maya will be turning on her wife so her cervix will open. Jack mades a crude joke about that, then apologizes. When he says the whale sounds won't help, Maya unplugs the speaker. Then she and Carina prepare to leave. Carina steps back when she realizes she hasn't left the cup. Before they leave, Jack says he's not into weird porn, in case they were worried. Maya cuts him off. As they go to close the door, he gets an alert from the genetic testing app. There's no problem, but it says he has a brother.
Inside, the team searches for any survivors in what looks like a sweatshop, with sewing machines and fabric all over the room. They find Pablo on the floor coughing and help him up. They radio out that they found someone and Beckett asks if there's anyone else. As Travis and Vic start leading him out, Sullivan says they're looking.
Andy checks her phone again, then notes she turned it off so she would stop trying to check the comments. Ross tells her never to read the comments. Andy says she survived the thing, then the aftermath, and now she has to survive people's opinions of it. She has a lot of practice compartmentalizing, but Ross says maybe she shouldn't try to do that. Andy says she just wants to get back to work as it makes her feel the most normal. Ross hesitates for a moment and then tells her she's being suspended, as department policy says all firefighters charged with a felony will be. Accidentally or not, she killed a man. Andy says it was self-defense. Ross says even if she could, she wouldn't put Andy back in the field. It's still too fresh. Andy says Dean and Sullivan went back to work the day after being arrested, but their arrests were different. Ross says Andy's lucky as a woman of color to have the department looking out for her. Andy doesn't feel lucky and tells Ross so. Ross clarifies that she's not fired. She's suspended pending the result of her trial. Over the radio, they hear that 19 and 88 need additional backup, which means Ross has to make an appearance at the scene. Andy says Ross can drop her off at the corner, but Ross says they're not done talking.
Jack says they're a full match, which means they have the same parents. His parents had another kid. He wonders what that means. Maya tells him to slow down and asks where he lives. Jack looks at his phone and says it doesn't say. There's just an email address: dadjokes2013. His brother is a dad. Carina falls back on the bed and puts a pillow over her face. Maya says Jack's an uncle, but Jack doesn't even know this guy. Maya says them sending Jack his email means the guy consented to being contacted. Carina interrupts and says they're not doing this today. Jack is distracted and she's annoyed, so she congratulates Maya on getting another delay. Maya says she doesn't want another delay.
Travis asks Pablo if anyone else is inside. Pablo is coughing heavily, but points to the building and says door. Suddenly, Mr. Phillips runs up to them and frets over Pablo. He's the owner of the building. Travis asks what the building is and he says it's just property he hasn't redeveloped yet. He claims he only has security there to keep squatters out. Travis asks if there are squatters inside. After he and Pablo share a look, Mr. Phillips says no. He wants them to focus on the fire. Travis goes to Beckett and tells him it looks like a sweatshop inside and the owner is dicey about who could be inside. Beckett goes back to Pablo, sends Mr. Phillips away, and asks again, saying Pablo's not in trouble, but he will be if he lies about people inside. Pablo says there's a hidden room on the second floor with people inside. Beckett sends his team back inside and radios everyone to prepare triage for the incoming patients.
Travis radios in to Sullivan while he and Vic re-enter the building, telling him about the hidden room. Beckett holds radio up to Pablo's face so he can guide them to the room. Following his instruction, they find the room It's locked from the outside, so Travis cuts through it, then Vic uses the sledgehammer to open it. Inside, several women are huddled behind some turned over mattresses covering their mouths with fabric.
Travis and Vic lead the women outside and down the stairs to triage. Khalidi tells Beckett they did good work and Beckett credits it to Travis. Travis and Vic start to check out the women as Travis sees that Dixon has arrived and is shaking hands with Mr. Phillips. Travis and Vic notice that the women are scared. One, Mai, finally tells them her name and says all the women are frightened. She asks if they're in trouble and Vic and Travis assure her they aren't, which she tells the other women. Travis notices a scar on Mai's hand and asks about it. She says she cut it on a sewing machine three years ago, but they sewed it up at the sweatshop instead of seeking medical care because they don't go past the gates. Mr Phillips told them if they got caught by police outside, it would be worse than being inside. He took their passports so they can't leave. They didn't know what it would be like when they came. Travis sees that Mr. Phillips and Dixon are now talking to Beckett, Khalidi, and another cop.
Jack and Maya find Carina in the kitchen, packing up the food. Jack apologizes for his thing taking over, but she says it didn't. Jack takes that to mean they can proceed, but Carina's still upset. She didn't even like Jack, but then he wormed his way in and made her like him and now they're maybe making a baby together. Jack's not sure why him having a brother changes anything. She says he had no one and now he has someone. Jack thinks that means they chose him because he didn't have any family. Carina say that's not what she meant, that everything was coming out wrong. Jack tries to leave, but they both tell him to stay, because they still want to do this, if he does. Carina says it's if Maya does. She thinks Maya is using it to avoid her work drama. Maya asks if Carina will finally believe she's serious when their kid is going off to college. Carina reminds her she wasn't sure she wanted to have kids. Maya reminds Carina that she wasn't sure she wanted to get married, but Maya isn't constantly asking if Carina's going to leave her. Jack says their conversation isn't helping him, so Maya sends him to do his thing while they do theirs. Maya looks at Carina, who starts walking toward their room, then comes back to pull Maya along with her.
Ross and Andy arrive at the scene, but Ross tells Andy that as a civilian, she has to stay in the car. Travis sees her arrival and rushes over to her, saying there's a situation she needs to know about. Before he can say anything, Dixon interjects and introduces himself. She asks him what the situation is. Then Beckett and Khalidi join the conversation. Travis explains that Mr. Phillips has been trafficking women to work in a sweatshop and was holding them hostage. Dixon interrupts, saying they need to do a proper investigation. Travis continues that he wasn't going to tell them there were more people in the building. He was prepare to let them die. Dixon tries to defend Mr. Phillips, but Travis keeps talking and says Dixon is protecting Mr. Phillips because they're friends and that's what he does. Dixon says the women deserve to tell their side of the story, as does Mr. Phillips. Travis is appalled. He says Dixon is a liar and people are going to find out about it. Beckett tells Travis it's out of their hands and leads him away. Ross looks around at the women then at Dixon and Mr. Phillips. From the car, Andy sees Dixon pull Mr. Phillips aside and tell him they'll take care of it as a prisoner transport van pulls up. Andy gets out of the car over Ross's objections. Ross says Andy shouldn't be angry with her because she's on Andy's side. Andy doesn't believe that, saying she's just like the rest of them deep down, saying Andy's not ready to come back to work after fighting off her attacker and saving herself, saying she still has work to do to earn the captain's seat when she's been doing the job well for months. Andy thought it was her, but now she realizes it's other people deciding things for her. It's the whole system telling women of color that they should accept what they've been given and be grateful even when they've worked for it. Andy walks off, saying she doesn't need Ross's help when Ross offers her a ride.
Vic is horrified that the women are being taken in a jail transport, but Theo thinks they're just taking them in to get their stories. Travis is less sure. Ross comes up to them and tells them the women are being taken to Seattle Pres to be checked out and she's having an immigration attorney she knows meet them there to help them sort things out and get s-visas. Vic still doesn't think it's right that they're being transported like prisoners. Travis asks about Pablo, because Pablo also wasn't going to speak up. Ross says he was just as scared as they were and Mr. Phillips is being questioned by the police. Travis asks if she means the police or his buddy Dixon. He knows Mr. Phillips will get away with it. Ross says they can't fix everything. Some things are outside their purview. Travis hates that. It was modern-day slavery in their city and without the fire, it would have continued. Ross tells Travis he is right to be upset, but he either needs to put himself in the position to fix it or stop talking about it. Otherwise, it's pointless.
Maya is kissing Carina, but she pulls back because Carina is crying. Carina doesn't want their baby to be made like this. Maya says technically it can't. Carina realizes she made a mess with Jack and gets up to apologize. She opens the door as Jack is approaching, knocking the cup out of his hand. Carina starts to cry harder as Maya gets a tissue to clean it up. Carina cries that her brother is gone and Jack is infuriating just like he was. She doesn't know what's happening to her. Maya says it's the hormones. She's seen patients go through it and didn't think it would happen to her, but it is. She's a hormonal wreck. They all start laughing. Carina says she doesn't want this disaster of a day to be how they make a family. Maya says it's kind of perfect this way. Carina asks about Jack's new brother. What if he falls in love with that guy's kids and wants to move closer to them so he doesn't miss things with them. Jack says that might happen, but he'll still be the uncle to their baby and he's not going anywhere. Maya says they can wait until next month, when they'll all had time to think, but Carina says today's perfect. She leans in and kisses Maya. Jack goes to leave, but Carina pulls him back and hugs him, thanking him. Then she sends him to make them another cup of sperm. Once he's gone, Carina tells Maya she's sure and pushes her back toward their bed.
Sullivan goes to talk to Ross, but she says they're at a scene. He start in anyway, saying it's not a good system when Beckett is captain while Travis rank and file. Ross says she didn't ask him and going forward, she doesn't want his input on any of her firefighters unless she asks. If he needs to make a report, he needs to do it through proper channels. She can draw a line between professional and personal and wonders if he can. She tells everyone they did a nice job.
Andy comes home to find Elena waiting outside for her. She called Sandra, who gave her the address. She says she's sorry. Andy drops her bag and hugs Elena as she starts to cry.
Carina moans as Maya goes down on her. Maya reaches up her hand to wrap softly around Carina's neck. They both startle when Jack knocks on the door, saying he has the sperm ready. Carina forgot that they needed that. Maya pops out from under the sheet and says she can keep going, but Carina sends her to get the sperm. Maya opens the door, takes the cup, and thanks him. He asks if Carina is ready, but she says that's none of his business, which he knows. She sends him to go listen to loud music, then closes the door and takes the cup to where Carina is waiting with the syringe.
Travis says they saved twelve women today, but it's still not enough because of people like Dixon. He slams his hand down roughly on the counter, injuring himself. As he gets a medical bag to treat Travis's hand, Theo explains that it's the snake and the saw. It's a story his mom used to tell him when he was a kid to teach him a lesson. The snake got cut on a saw and snapped at the saw, cutting his mouth up, then wrapped himself around the saw to suffocate it, but it didn't work. The snake killed himself. Travis takes it to mean his anger at Dixon is only going to end up hurting him. Theo just meant that snapping at it isn't going to beat it. He needs to do more. Travis wonders if he means Travis should run for Mayor. They get the pizza delivery and take it upstairs.
Sullivan asks if Vic knows anything about Andy's mom tracking her down, but Vic says her phone is going straight to voicemail still. Travis and Theo bring in the pizza, which Travis says is Theo's way of winning them over. They all dig in.
Elena says it happened to her, too, at the academy. She knew the guy, but they weren't close. He found her waiting for a bus and offered her a ride. It happened in his car. He was asking her why she joined FD and then he was raping her. Elena's glad Andy fought Jeremy off and that he's dead. Andy thanks her for making sure she knew how to defend herself. Andy asks if she reported it, but she says no one back then cared. She told a few people, but they encouraged her not to say anything because it only made her look bad and would make people question having men and women working together. Andy is stunned. She says as much as things have changed, they really haven't. Elena knows they have a female fire chief, but Andy doesn't think that matters if she's doing the job just as a man would. Elena still thinks it matters. Just because Andy can't see it doesn't mean things haven't changed. Andy's worried that the charges mean she won't ever get to be a firefighter again. She thinks being on leave is an admission of guilt. Andy thanks Elena for coming, who thanks her for letting her in. Elena says that's enough with the tears and turns on some music. The two of them dance together.

632 Bellomy Road[]
Station 19 was called out to 632 Bellomy Road. They arrived to find 88 already fighting the fire at an apartment complex. Their captain called for backup to do search and rescue. When 19 arrived, they prepared to fill that role after being told that 88 had secured the exterior. Beckett sent them to the C side of the building. Once they entered, the found Pablo, a security guard, and evacuated him. Outside, Pablo struggled to speak. The owner of the property told them it was just property he hadn't developed yet and he had a security guard to keep squatters out. They asked if there were squatters inside and he said no. Travis told Beckett that he suspected it was a sweatshop and Beckett sent the owner away, then asked Pablo if there was anyone else inside. Pablo told them there was a hidden room with people inside, so they went back inside to find them, using Pablo's guidance to find the room. Once they found it, they sawed open the door, evacuated twelve women, and treated them for smoke inhalation. One of the women, Mai, told them the owner of the building had taken their passports and refused to let them leave the building. The women were then taken to Seattle Pres to be evaluated.
