Deborah is special assistant to the president. She was sent to Seattle by Barack Obama in order to get Derek Shepherd to agree to head the presidential brain mapping initiative. She was instructed not to go back to D.C. until Derek had agreed. Despite this, when Derek insisted that he wasn't going to D.C. with her, she left. Later that night, Derek called her with a change of heart and said he'd be in D.C. soon.
