Demons is the fourth episode of the sixth season and the 81st overall episode of Station 19.
Short Summary[]
Maya and Theo answer a call at a Halloween carnival, but when fire hits the corn maze, the dangers quickly escalate and Maya risks her own life to prove her worth to her increasingly hostile captain. Meanwhile, Station 19 hosts the neighborhood kids for trick-or-treating, a prank war breaks out in the house, and Jack is haunted by a ghost from his past.
Full Summary[]
Jack finishes a beer and lies back in Eva's bed.
Sullivan drives the aid car while Maya does CPR in the back on a person in a Halloween costume.
Travis, Theo, and Vic try to recruit support from other firefighters at the bar.
Carina lies awake at night. She rolls over and sees the lighted pumpkin on the dresser. She throws her pillow at it, then pulls Maya's pillow over her face.
Eva comes home, undresses, and takes a pill, then gives one to Jack. She climbs into bed next to him. He curls up behind her and starts kissing her, but stops when he hears Rigo's voice calling his name and asking what Jack did to his house.
Beckett greets Andy as she comes into the station. He's excited because he loves Halloween. Vic, Travis, and Theo come in, talking about the event. Travis says they only talked to him at all because he was buying them beer. He bought so much that his bank thought his card had been stolen. Theo says it wasn't that bad, but Travis quotes some things the firefighters said. Vic charges him $2 for that, as they're making him pay them every time he complains about Dixon. Once Travis has walked away, Andy asks how it was and Theo and Vic admit it was really bad. Sullivan comes downstairs. He worked the last shift with Maya and now he has a romantic weekend planned with his new lady friend. Vic is surprised he met someone online, but Sullivan says she's smart and funny. And she lives in Oregon, so he needs to leave. Despite the distance, he thinks she's worth it.
Vic says she was the only woman from the fire department in the bar last night. Andy's not surprised as women only make up 7% of the fire department. They overhear Ben on the phone telling someone this is important. He hangs up and tells them Bailey isn't bringing Pru to Halloween. When they object that they need to see Pru in her costume, he says Joey's bringing her, but he's upset that Bailey isn't bringing Pru herself because of work. Vic calls him out on that, saying he spent six months worried that Bailey had quit. He can't now be upset that she's found the joy in her work again. She's a badass surgeon and her patients are lucky to have her. Ben shows them a picture of Pru in her firefighter costume. They're all surprised when a creepy clown appears behind them. It's Beckett in a mask. He tells them there's a line-up in ten.
Beckett says they'll be opening their doors to the community for a Halloween open house. He wants them to be helpful and cheerful. Today's about having fun. He pulls a cord, dumping a bucket of fake blood on Maya. Ben says he's started a prank war with the wrong guy, but he welcomes it. Theo suggests that Maya take a shower. Andy asks if there's anything they can do. Vic says there are a lot of paramedics there and one doctor. They could make it look like an accident. Maya walks away to shower.
Sullivan drives. When he arrives, Ross lets him into the hotel room and they start kissing.
Jack tries to get Rigo to disappear as Rigo taunts him about his efforts. Rigo suggests that Jack might be dead, too. Jack calls out to Eva who wakes up. He suggests they get some coffee or some breakfast. She has a better idea and drags him back to bed, kissing him. Rigo says screwing his wife won't make him disappear.
Carina runs into Maya in the locker room. Maya is drying her hair, which has a pink tinge, after her shower. She shampooed four times, but it wasn't enough. Maya gets dressed and notices Carina making a face. She says the smell is her. Beckett soaked her last clean pair of clothes and what she has on is her freshest-smelling outfit. Carina says she smells like old cheese. She starts to laugh because Maya stinks because she's avoiding her wife and her problems. If Carina doesn't laugh about it, she'll cry. Maya asks why she's there in pink scrubs, because clinic isn't until tomorrow. Carina says she's going as a woman who is hopeful that things will go back to how they were and she volunteered to help with the open house. Maya walks away even as Carina calls out to her.
Sullivan and Ross cuddle in bed. They're glad no one will find them where they are. They play I Spy. She says something in Korean, but he doesn't get it. When he gives three wrong answers, she tells him it was telephone, which she knows he knew. He speaks to her in French and she responds in French. She likes that he's multilingual. She's sure milkmaid47 likes it, too. She asks how his dates with her have been. He says he hasn't been on any and is surprised she has been on dates with other people. He gets out of bed and leaves to go for a walk.
Andy is decorating when Eli Stern comes in. He has a box of treats for the trick or treaters, but she says they can't accept treats from strangers, even store-bought ones. He says he's looking for Travis. Just then, Travis comes in looking for candy. Eli says he's Travis's new campaign manager, once Travis hires him. Andy says he already has a campaign manager, but Eli says she can't be very good because he's not making an impression in the polls. Once he hears she's a firefighter, he understands. Eli says his friend is doing good work, but it's not enough. She can't help him outside firefighting circles. He knows Travis is a great candidate with a mismanaged campaign. He could be great if he let Eli work with him. He schmoozes Travis and gives him his card before leaving. Andy snatches the card away and Travis asks Andy not to tell Vic, insisting he's not taking it seriously.
As they drive to the scene, Theo talks to Maya about Beckett being awful to her. It reminds Theo of the guy who taught his class at the academy, who felt they should suffer because he had. She asks if that guy made it his life's mission to keep Theo from being a firefighter or be helpful in a crisis. Theo asks if that's why she's working so much overtime. She says she enjoys getting to be an actual firefighter sometimes. Theo knows what it feels like to burn out, to have everything come crashing down on you. He thinks Maya's stretched too thin. Maya says she's an excellent firefighter and she was a great captain with a team that respected her. Theo was, too, but this isn't some kind of trauma they can bond over. He asked to be demoted. She was demoted because she upset the wrong person and now she's being punished because the same person promoted someone with an ego as tiny and fragile as his. Now she gets to drive the aid car or being on desk or clean up messes instead of being a firefighter. They arrived at the Halloween carnival, where Cammy greeted them. She told them someone got spooked in the maze and beat up one of their haunters, Dirk. She leads them to him. He's holding a cloth over his bleeding nose. He denies feeling dizzy or nauseated. Dirk says the guy tried to kick his groin first before going for the face. Nearby, two people exit the maze fighting with staffs. They swap them out for torches and Cammy tells them they can't play with those. Maya and Theo also tell them to put them down. The fight sends a spark flying into the maze, igniting the corn. The two fighters run away, followed by Cammy. Maya and Theo race inside the maze.
Eva and Jack enter the bar. Eva orders them some beers and Jack sits at a table. Rigo appears again and taunts Jack over the sex he and Eva had. Eva comes to the table and tries to sit on Jack's lap, but he pushes her off. She asks him what's wrong with him. Jack shouts to leave him alone. He's talking to Rigo, but Eva thinks he means her, so she leaves. He stops her and says he's seeing Rigo. Eva gets angry with Jack for rubbing salt in her wound. She tells him they're done.
Ross is flipping through a book when Sullivan comes back with Chinese food. She doesn't understand why he's upset because he agreed to their arrangement. He says he's been patient. He just doesn't like living a lie. Ross says if people found out, it would be her integrity. She's protecting both their careers. They're entitled to privacy. Sullivan starts eating, saying he's hungry and they can talk later.
The engine and ladder are called to the carnival. Carina asks Andy if she's not going. She says she agreed to be in charge of the open house. Andy asks Carina why she's doing laundry at the station. Carina says Maya doesn't have any clean clothes and she's not Maya's mother, but she's hoping if she helps her a little, Maya might start to help herself. Andy thanks her, as someone who has to sit next to Maya in the rigs. Carina misses her wife. Maya won't talk to her. She asks if Maya talks to Andy. Andy says for as long as she's known Maya, she works too much and even more when she's in pain. It's how she was raised. She pushes through. The first vacation she ever took was with Carina and she still checked in constantly. Carina asks if Andy is just saying she has to accept Maya's process. That's more or less it. She can be infuriating and she fights against anyone who helps her because she has to find her way on her own. Andy does know that Maya loves Carina.
As they arrive, Beckett asks Theo what they're looking and Theo explains what happened as Maya continues evacuations. Theo has a map of the maze, showing three exits for the people trapped inside. They evacuated the surrounding rides. Beckett says to get the ladder positioned to give them an aerial view and prepare to get water on all sides. Beckett sent Theo, Ben, Travis, and Vic to continue evacuation. Lisa comes up, saying her husband and son are inside the maze and she can't reach them. Aiden is dressed like a letter carrier and Paul is the mailbox. Beckett hears that the ladder truck is stuck in exit traffic, so Beckett calls for traffic control. Maya sees the Ferris wheel and begins climbing it over Beckett's objection, saying she can get a view from up there.
Rigo explains that his death isn't Jack's fault. He's the one who ignored orders. Rigo can't figure out what damaged Jack so much that he went back to Eva. Rigo lays out Jack's issues. Jack knows he's a loser, but doesn't want Rigo to say it. Jack doesn't think he deserves anything. Rigo says he's an idiot, but he deserves happiness and love. He gets to live and he's wasting it. Rigo says watching it is worse than dying.
Beckett says there are 8 to 10 civilians still inside the maze according to the manager. Maya looks into the maze as Ben says they found three employees and are headed out. Vic and Travis search for survivors in the maze. Beckett tells Maya to get down as she's putting her safety and the whole team's safety at risk. He orders her to come down and help with triage. She ignores him and searches the maze. She finds a pack of four employees near Vic and Travis. She directs them to cut through the maze to find them. They direct the employees to cover their mouths and get low. Their exit is blocked by fire, but Maya's able to direct them to an alternate way out. Beckett again says it's not safe. A generator blows, causing the Ferris wheel to jolt, leaving Maya hanging by one hand. Beckett tells her to hold on and they'll get her down. He tells Theo to get the 35 foot ladder and put it up for Maya. Maya's able to get herself back to a stable position as Travis and Vic bring out the employees. Beckett says all the employees are accounted for and they're just searching for Paul and Aiden. Maya spots them heading the wrong way. She climbs down, saying she's coming. When she jumps off the platform, she injures her ankle, but grabs a fire extinguisher and enters the maze anyway.
Beckett radios Maya again to say she's on triage. She says she knows where Aiden and Paul are. Beckett sends in Theo, Larsson, and Kline to back her up.
Sullivan and Ross play chess. She used to play with her dad when he took her fishing. She hated it at first, but grew to love it and eventually only went on the trips to play chess with him. She learned a lot about him while they played. Sullivan knows her parents were married for 40 years. That's the fantasy. She asks if they can talk now. She went on a date, but she hated it because it wasn't him. No one else understands them. She's glad he hasn't gone on any days because she hates the idea. He leans in and starts kissing her, knocking the chess board to the ground.
Carina and Andy are decorating the bar when Eli comes back in. Andy says he can't just roam around. He came back to pitch himself to Travis, but him not being here gives Eli the opportunity to get Andy on board and have her help him. He once dated a girl who went to art school and offers to help them decorate. Andy reluctantly accepts his help.
Jack tries to apologize to Eva, who is flirting with another man. She says Rigo was the love of her life, the best man she'll ever know and he's rubbing salt in that wound. She's done. Jack wants to explain, but the guy says Eva's not interested. He punches Jack, knocking him to the ground.
Maya searches for Aiden and Paul, ignoring Theo asking for her location. Once she finds them, she tells Theo where they are. She has them cover their mouths. Paul's legs are burned, but he tells Maya to take Aiden and he'll find his own way out. Maya refuses to leave him and tries to lift him. She has to put him back down and he says she has to take his son and leave. His son didn't want to come in the maze and he made him. Maya radios out, saying they're blocked in by fire and she has two civilians with her. She needs another way out. Paul tells Aiden he loves him and tells him to go with Maya. Maya takes off her jacket and puts it over them. Paul takes it off himself and puts it on Aiden. Maya uses the extinguisher to push back the flames until it runs out. Then she huddles with Paul and Aiden.
Theo, Larsson, and Kline search for them.
Maya pulls Paul and Aiden away from the flames as far as she can.
Outside, Lisa, Beckett, and Cammy wait for news. They're relieved when Maya and Theo appear, carrying Paul as Aiden walks out in front of them. Aiden runs to his mom as they put Paul on a gurney. With the ladder truck in position, they start hitting the maze with water.
Back at the station, Ben sees Maya limping and asks her to let him look at her ankle. She says she just needs to walk it off. Theo says what she did was stupid. Maya says she saved their lives. He says she could have directed them from above like she had been doing, but she wanted to be a hero and it was stupid. Beckett tells the team did they did good work. Theo says that wasn't good work. Beckett doesn't know how to be a good leader. He asks if Beckett knows that Maya has worked five shifts in a row, 120 hours without proper rest because he can't win with dignity. She's killing herself to prove she's worth her spot. Maya says she's fine, but Theo tells her her wife might be pregnant. She could be a mom to someone right now and she's acting like she has a death wish. People die on this job and they die faster with captains who are too wrapped up in their egos. He knows it firsthand. He tells Beckett to do something about it because he won't get over it if someone dies on his watch because of his actions. Beckett tells Maya she's off shift right now. She's at risk to herself and others working like she is. He tells her if she works again before her next regularly scheduled shift, he'll send her back to the academy.
Maya refills her water bottle. Carina says she thinks she's pregnant. She's been eating non-stop all day and thinks it's a good sign. Maya says that's good. Carina asks if she's okay and she says she's tired and thirsty. She's going to shower and then she's going to come home. She shouldn't work like she is. It's not safe for the others. Carina says she should sleep at home in bed with her. Maya says that's exactly what she needs. She kisses Carina and then goes to shower.
Joey and Ben lead in Pru, who is dressed as Megan Rapinoe. Joey says she changed her mind about her costume and he couldn't argue with her. She says she wants to be a soccer player when she grows up when Travis asks. Carina quietly tells Travis it's football and they bicker over it as Pru goes to get candy. Vic asks why Theo looks so sad and he says Halloween was Michael's favorite. Andy's surprised to see Eli walk in dressed as Big Ben, holding the hand of London, who is dressed as Peter Pan. Andy didn't have him pegged as a dad and he corrects that London's his niece. And she insisted that he dress as her for Halloween. He tried wearing one of her headbands, but then she said she meant the city London, leading to his Big Ben costume. Eli asks if she put in a good word for him with Travis and she says no. He's surprised he didn't win her over. Eli goes over to talk to Travis himself. Vic asks Andy why there are no little girls dressed as firefighters. She wants to do something about that, like a camp for girls to get them excited about firefighting. Andy agrees to help. Andy sorts suddenly when she sees Jack slumped against a wall, looking beat up. He says he had a bad day, but he hasn't had a drink in a few hours and he tossed his pain pills. He wants to see Pru. Andy says he can't see her looking like that. If he wants to see her, he has to pull himself together. He gets up and says he thinks he can convince her his look is a costume.
Jack walks toward Pru, who hugs him happily. Jack sees Rigo nod at him.
Ross comes back into the room to find Sullivan lighting candles around the tub. She's impressed. He doesn't want to wait three more months for time with her. She says he's with her now, so he should enjoy it. He tells her a cheesy time travel joke. Then he starts to play I Spy with her. They undress each other.
Becket makes himself a sandwich and bites into it. Then he looks into the day room and sees Ben on the floor with foam coming out of his mouth. He yells for help as he drops his sandwich and goes to check Ben out. Ben startles him by saying Boo when he leans down to check if Ben is breathing. Beckett admits that Ben got him and tells him to clean up the mess.
Maya sits in the bottom of the shower, fully clothed. She pulls off her boot and sock and starts sobbing.

Trick or Treater[]
Sullivan and Maya picked up someone in a Halloween costume, a 20 year old who went into cardiac arrest in the aid car. Maya did CPR while Sullivan drove them to the hospital.
Halloween Carnival Fire[]
Maya and Theo went to 1821 North Standard Street, where they found one of the workers, Dirk, who had been beaten by a frightened customer in the maze. Dirk was bleeding from his nose. Maya examined him, but before they could finish treating him, two people wrestling with torches started a fire in the maze. They called for the engine and ladder to join them and went in to start pulling people out. When backup arrived, Theo showed Beckett the map of the maze and said they evacuated the surrounding rides. Beckett said to position the ladder so they could get an aerial view and hit it with water from all sides. Lisa came to them and told them her son, Aiden, and husband, Paul, were trapped in the maze. She described their costume. The ladder was stuck in traffic, so Maya decided to climb the nearby Ferris Wheel to get the aerial view. When Beckett saw her climbing, he told her to get down, but she ignored him and kept climbing. The manager told Beckett there were 8-10 civilians still in the maze. Ben reported that they'd found three employees and were bringing them out. Vic and Travis continued to search for Paul and Aiden. From above, Maya told Vic and Travis that she could see four employees north of them. They cut through the stalks and evacuated the employees with help from Maya when their exit was blocked by fire. At this point, the generator blew and Maya ended up hanging off the side of the wheel. Beckett told Theo to take her a ladder so she could get down. Maya was able to get herself back to a safe position. Only two civilians, Aiden and Paul, remained. Maya spotted them going the wrong direction, so she climbed down, injuring her ankle during the final drop, and went into the maze to get them herself. She radioed to Beckett their location and he sent Theo, Larsson, and Kline in to help her. Maya found them and Paul told her to take Aiden out. She had them cover their faces. Paul said his legs were burned, but he could find his way out. Maya tried to pull Paul up, but couldn't. He begged Maya to take Aiden out. Maya put her jacket around them and used the fire extinguisher she had to push the flames back until it ran out. Then she pulled them away from the flames. Finally, Ruiz, Larsson, and Kline found them and Theo and Maya carried Paul out while Aiden walked to safety. They then doused the fire from above and were able to put it out.

Notes and Trivia[]
- This episode's title originated from the song Demons, originally sung by Imagine Dragons.
- This episode scored 3.87 million viewers.[1]
- The scene with the fake blood being dumped on Maya was filmed in one take. It dyed Danielle Savre's hair, clothes, and skin and it took days to wash out.[2]
- When they filmed the scene, the fake blood didn't hit her head exactly, so she had to step back into it.[2]
- The scene with Maya and Carina after Maya's shower was the first scene filmed for the episode. As such, Danielle Savre's hair had to be dyed to mimic the effects of the fake blood on her hair.[2]
- The hotel room where Ross and Sullivan stayed was based on the Madonna Inn.[2]
- Writer Emily Culver was in the Ferris Wheel during the first scene at the carnival.[2]
- When the torch was thrown into the hay maze, it took many takes because the part that made the fake smoke kept falling off.[2]
- They filmed some of the hay maze at Underwood Family Farms, then recreated the maze on a stage to film the rest of the scenes.[2]
- Boris Kodjoe plays chess and set up the chess game Ross and Sullivan were playing for each take.[2]
- The chess game was originally scripted as being cribbage, based on writer Emily Culver's experience with her own dad, but neither of the actors was familiar with it, so it was swapped out.[2]
- The chess board falling first happened by accident, but was then included in the scene.[2]
- Carina originally had no lines in the scene when Pru comes to the station, but Stefania Spampinato commented that it's football, not soccer, so it was included in the episode.[2]
