Full Summary[]
The episode opens with a montage of clips of the history of Cristina and Owen's relationship. Meanwhile, Cristina's voice over asks us three questions. Do you know who you are? Do you know what's happened to you? Do you want to live this way? Cristina then appears in front of a dark background, staring at something.
Shane and Cristina are operating. There's a hole in the pericardium, which Cristina says is keeping the patient alive. While Cristina's voice over says that it only takes one person, one patient, one moment to change your life forever, Cristina feels in the patient's chest. She then tells Ross she would like to introduce him to the Black Mamba. Shane asks if that isn't the IVC. It is, and it's unpredictable. One wrong move, one misstep, and the patient is dead. Cristina says they can't repair the Mamba without moving with the Mamba. Some people say it is impossible to repair, but Cristina is going to "dance with the Mamba". Derek comes in, he was paged. Shane tells him he needs to look at the C-spine X-rays of the MVC victims. "Poor guy," Derek says as he sees them. Cristina enthusiastically says she just nailed the Mamba. Derek says the patient's C3 and 4 obliterated. His spinal cord was severed and there's no way Derek can repair that. Cristina still says she fixed the Mamba against all odds because she's awesome, but Derek says the patient is paralyzed from the neck down. Derek leaves the OR and Shane and Cristina look at the patient's face.
Cristina is explaining to Jason's wife Elise how the crash severed the spinal cord at C3. She's a nurse, so she knows about C3. She wants to know if this means he's paralyzed. Cristina affirms and says she's sorry. She does say that his brain function is good and that she fixed the heart. Elise asks if he can breathe on his own. He can't, which is why he's on a ventilator. Cristina says that there are options though when he's recovered from the surgery, including a surgery that can make Jason sit up. Elise wants to know if he'll ever breathe on his own again. He won't. Elise then wants her to wake Jason up, but she needs Cristina to do it and to ask Jason if he wants the vent removed. Cristina reminds her the vent is what's keeping him alive, as Elise starts telling how she was going to surprise Jason that night with play-off tickets. She understands what she's asking and doesn't want to lose him, but she also knows him. Cristina watches Owen talk to a nurse outside the room as Elise says she knows everything about him, that she understands how he thinks, that she gets his humor, that she can predict what he's gonna order at a restaurant and that she can't believe Jason would want this. She thinks he would rather than spend another minute hooked up to the machine. Cristina says it's her husband's right to decline treatment. She informs Elise that it'll take a while before Jason's fully off the sedation, but she'll let Elise know when he starts to wake. Elise thanks her.
Cristina enters a lounge, where Alex and Meredith are talking about whether or not Alex will ever marry Jo. Meredith thinks they're good as they're together, whether Jo is the marrying type or not. She wasn't that type herself, but Alex points out Meredith is married now. Meredith replies some people just don't good married. Alex asks if they should just keep going as they're doing now. This makes Cristina think about her own love life. Cristina's pager goes off, making Alex and Meredith realize that she's in the room. Meredith didn't see her and asks if she's okay. Yup, she replies, and wanders off.
Cristina and Elise are next to Jason's bed. Cristina needs to ask him some questions. He can't speak because of the tube down his throat, but he should be able to nod yes or no. Cristina asks him if he knows who he is. He does. He doesn't seem to know where he is, and he can't remember what happened to him. Cristina tells he had a car accident when he was hit from behind and flipped over in oncoming traffic. Right now, he's in the hospital. He does remember Elise. Cristina then informs him he's paralyzed from the neck down because of the shattered spine and that the vent is breathing for him. She understands it might be his wish to remove the vent, also clarifying that that would mean he'd die. He understands this. Cristina asks if he still wants her to remove the vent. He looks at Elise, who tells him she loves him and that she'll support him whatever he decides. Cristina apologizes, but she has to ask the question one more time. He nods, wanting her to remove the vent.
Scenario 1
Cristina arrives in the hall, visibly depressed. She puts away her tablet and while the voice over repeats the questions, Cristina watches Owen wait for the elevator to arrive. Behind her, an orderly and Jackson are moving a rollable computer. The latter hurts his hand in the process. Cristina walks up to Owen and asks him what the hell they're doing. He's waiting for the elevator, but Cristina says she spent the day saving the life of a man who's now choosing to die, but all she keeps thinking is that she and him are throwing so much away. They should be together, he's the love of her life and it's just stupid for them to keep pretending. "I love you, I wanna be with you, for real, forever, it's as simple as that," she says and then kisses him.
Cristina and Owen have just finished a massive sex session, in which they christened every room in their new house. Owen thought they weren't going to make it through the guest room, but Cristina reminds him he rallied at the end. Owen brings up the house feels big for just the two of them.
Owen and Cristina are at the dog shelter. He gets enthusiastic about the first dog they see, but she refuses. She also calls the second one too big, saying a big dog like that one makes big poop. She walks to the next cage, where a smaller, ugly dog is growling at them. That's the one, she says. While Owen claims it looks mean, Cristina calls for someone at the shelter, saying they want this one.
Cristina and Shane are placing a freshly printed conduit with Alex observing. He thinks the kid is tiny for 12 months, but Cristina says the kid will grow once the heart starts pumping more blood around the system. Shane supports her, saying they saw results in other kids in only a year. Owen comes in and says he has an emergency surgery that requires him to operate for 9 hours. She says it's okay, but he reminds her about Mrs. Rodriguez. Cristina thinks Mrs. Rodriguez will last for 3 hours, which is when she's done with her surgery. They have a discussion about whether or not to lock the dog in the kitchen when they're gone until Owen leaves. Alex can't believe she got a dog, thinking it'll die within the week. Shane doesn't understand why she's named it Mrs. Rodriguez, but Cristina says he will once he's met the dog. Alex advises him to go see the dog soon before it's dead. Cristina claims she's not gonna have a problem keeping an animal alive as she's a physician and assures him the dog is perfectly healthy.
At Meredith's house, Cristina and Meredith are going through Bailey's old clothes. Meredith can't believe Cristina is going to dress her dog in her son's old sweaters. Cristina says Mrs. Rodriguez can't stand the damp and rain, which makes him get the shakes. At a table, an older Zola is playing. Meredith laughs and comments that Cristina likes the dog, but Cristina claims it's only because he's an unusual one. She's not becoming someone who likes dogs. He just happens to relate to people like she does: he doesn't want to talk about his feelings or the future, if she walks and feeds him on a regular schedule, he'll crawl next to her on the couch and if she doesn't, he'll bite her ankles. It's a set of behaviors that make sense to her. Meredith says that the dog liking and getting her is the way she talks about her children. "You have a baby," she jokes as Cristina leaves to go see her dog, who started barking.
During a board meeting, Derek tells Jackson that he knows how painful it is as he's been over it himself, but it's been two years since the injury and at some point you just have to say enough is enough. Jackson starts to defend himself, but Callie says his hand needs more time. He should give himself some rest and throw himself into a rehab. Jackson yells he's done the rehab. It's been two years, he's done. He's ready to operate. Derek interrupts him and says that the decision has been made. He keeps his administrative duties, but he's not cleared to operate. He's not going back into the OR. Jackson storms out. Derek asks if there is anything else they should discuss. "Actually, there is," Owen says.
Owen and Cristina come home arguing over whether or not he should've brought it up to the board. Cristina says he shouldn't have as they haven't made the decision yet. Or wait, they have, but clearly she wasn't part of it. Owen says it's the job of a lifetime: running the entire military trauma division with Teddy. It's what's next for him, he can feel that. "Yeah, in Germany! We have a house, I have my trial!" she yells. She tries to convince him they're good here, happy. They can't just leave everything. He wants her to think about it, but she firmly refuses as she'd have to dump her whole trial. He tells her to stop acting like some hit-and-run victim. He can't have another conversation where the idea that his career, or in fact any of his wishes, might come first, is presented as some crime against humanity. Cristina points out they're back were they started. "I never give you anything, so the terms under which we're together are that your dreams die!" she remarks. That's not how Owen seems to think about it. Meanwhile, a barking Mrs. Rodriguez has come over. He asks her to quiet the damn dog, but she tells him to do it as he wanted the dog. Owen says that dog only likes her. "Because you make stupid decisions! And he knows it! I'm not moving to Germany!" Cristina yells. Owen can't believe this conversation is over. Owen sighs and says he doesn't know why he ever had the idea they'd ever do something he wants. He leaves and Cristina watches their wedding photo. She then quiets the dog, who instantly listens to her.
Years later, a now-attending Shane finds Cristina in trauma room 1. She's heavily pregnant and she says that whatever it is, it can wait because her shift is over and she's going home. Shane tries to warm her up for the case he has, a conduit kid who's back for the annual check-up and whose parents allow him to play hockey. Cristina tells him to handle it. "Send them my best. But if my conduit gets smashed because they let the kid get bodychecked on the ice, I'm killing them!" she says. She leaves the trauma room and bumps into April, who's also heavily pregnant. April happily says they're belly buddies. "No, we're not," Cristina says and she walks away.
Cristina is giving birth with Meredith and Owen holding her hands. Cristina can't push anymore. She says she has a cozy womb, the baby will be happier in there. It'd be better for everyone, she thinks. Cristina repeats she can't do it and tells Meredith that this is mistake. Owen is shocked, but Meredith says everyone says that, which Owen believes. Cristina gives one more push. The OB then shows them the baby. Owen goes to see his newborn son being taken care of by the nurse, while Cristina tells Meredith that she screwed up. She starts crying and repeats that she really screwed up. Meredith quiets her as Owen comes over with the baby. However, when Owen comes over with their newborn baby boy and hands him over to her, she seems happy and greets her son.
Some time in the future, the baby is crying. Owen wakes up, but Cristina is already sitting on the end of the bed. She tells him she's got this. He goes back to sleep as Cristina glares at her crying baby for a while. She looks exhausted and unhappy, but ultimately picks up her son and starts calming him down.
Jo, now a peds attending, is taking care of Theo Hunt, with Cristina and Owen watching her and their son. Cristina blames herself for what happened at the park. She was right there, but lost attention for one second when Ross texted her. Owen assures her these things happen, it's a wonder they haven't happened sooner. Cristina says they're not going to the park again, as the concrete steps by the play space are completely irresponsible. She's worrying too much. Owen tells her it's just a superficial laceration and tells her to slow down. Cristina is late for her meeting, but she can't just stick him in daycare. Owen replies there are very capable teachers there. "I am capable," she says. Shane comes in to inform her on trial patients. When he sees her son, he asks if he should reschedule the surgeries. In the moment, Cristina decides to let him take over phase 3 of the trial as he knows what to do. Owen and Shane are surprised to hear her say that, but she asks him to please do it for her. He will.
At Bailey's 7th birthday party, Cristina can't believe Bailey is already seven. She sits down and she and Meredith have a conversation about their children. Meredith never thought that out of all conversations about boys they've had, she didn't expect this one to be it. They laugh. Cristina watches Owen play with Theo. "Feel any kicks yet?" Meredith asks her, indicating she's pregnant again. Not really, and neither is she nauseous. Just tired. Every day, she goes to work and does her job, only to come home and do her other job. She's so tired, like she's sleepwalking all the time. Meredith says that'll pass soon as she's well into her second trimester now. "It's not the pregnancy," Cristina says. Meredith notices something's wrong, but Cristina interrupts her to tell her to look how happy Owen is, playing with his son.
Meredith enters the hospital lounge where Cristina is holding a dress and looking at herself in the mirror. Meredith can't believe she's not dressed, they need to get going as the Harper Avery Awards await. Meredith asks if she needs a moment. She does. Meredith agrees to just a minute, but then her nerves have to calm down.
At the Harper Avery Awards, Cristina is giving a speech about how a surgical mind constantly needs to be inspired, always asking the toughest questions. The Harper Avery Award is a celebration of that, of the kind of mind she saw in tonight's recipient, even when he was just an intern. "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm honored to present to you, this year's Harper Avery Award recipient: Dr. Shane Ross!", she says. Everyone applauds as Shane gets onto the stage. Cristina hands over the Award. He starts his speech with thanking Dr. Yang, without whose guidance, encouragement, and support he wouldn't be here. He continues by saying that all it takes is one person, one patient, one moment to change your life forever. He then names one of his patient who was supposedly not going to make it, but thanks to the trial, he's here with them tonight. Jasper, the patient, stands up and receives an applause.
Cristina is heavily crying in the bathroom of the award party. Meredith is outside the toilet, trying to get her to calm down. Meanwhile, the voice over repeats the three questions. Do you know who you are? Do you know what's happened to you? Do you want to live this way?
Scenario 2
Back in the present, Elise tells Jason she loves him and that she'll support him, whatever he decides. Cristina apologizes, but she has to ask one more time. Does he want her to remove the vent? He watches his crying wife and nods no.
Cristina is again in the hallway watching Owen wait for the elevator to arrive, but this time she's happy because her patient chose to live. Again, Jackson hurts his hand in the process of moving a rollable computer. Meredith rushes over to help him as Cristina walks up to Owen. This time, she says she spent the day saving the life of a man who could've chosen to die, but didn't. She repaired a heart that was impossible to repair. "I achieved the impossible today and it feels good! No, more, it feels incredible!" she says. She asks what he's doing now. Again, he replies he's waiting for the elevator. She tells him they're going to have to take the stairs because she just finished her shift and she feels like celebrating, tonight, naked, with him. She pulls his tie and he replies he could be into that. They rush off.
Cristina and Owen finish making out in the trailer. After some kissing, she wants to know if he's really okay with this. He's very sure and kisses her again. Not this, she says. She meant them being just them. He knows what she means. He's good. They continue making out.
Cristina and Owen are arguing at the hospital. She yells that he told her that he was okay, but he's now come back on this. Jackson, with his hand in a bandage, comes in for his films, but leaves when he sees they're fighting. Owen wants them to reopen the conversation, but Cristina claims there's nothing to talk about. She was so clear about this, she can't give him more than she already is giving him. If he needs more now, he should get it somewhere else. He says he will and leaves.
Only to have them making out again in a storage room later.
Meredith and Cristina are in Meredith's bed together. Cristina is telling that it's over. This time, she and Owen are really over because they can't keep falling back into the same pattern. Meredith has fallen asleep but wakes up when Cristina asks her if she's awake. "Yeah, you and Owen are over again," Meredith says. She tells Cristina to continue. That's the point, they can't continue the way it is because it's not good, not healthy.
Jason, Elise, Owen, Cristina, Callie, and Derek are in Callie and Derek's research lab. Cristina tells Jason that now his heart has healed, he's a perfect candidate for their trial. Elise wants to know if it can hurt him. Not really, Derek says as he explains that he has to put in an array of wireless sensors into the skull. Callie says none of their subjects ever complained of pain. It's a chance to help revolutionize treatment for people like Jason. Elise asks what he thinks. Jason thinks it'll help people like him, but not himself. Elise asks if it wouldn't be nice to have a place to go instead of sitting around the house all day. She begs him to do it. He says he doesn't care, but agrees.
Elise, Cristina, Callie, and Owen leave the BCI lab. Elise thanks Cristina for having thought about them, but Callie says it was Owen who informed them about Jason. Elise then thanks him and she walks away with Callie. Cristina looks at Owen and says that was a really nice thing he did for them. Owen jokes he's a really nice guy, or so he's been told.
Back in the trailer, Cristina says she'd never ask him for that. He's not asking, he's telling her. He convinces her people change. She's not the same person as when they met. He can change too. Cristina is still doubtful as people who want kids don't simply stop wanting them. She tells him not to give up things for her. He's not, he has it. "We're not getting a baby," he says and he kisses her.
Owen enters the BCI lab, where Jason is wearing a special suit and walking again. Callie is walking next to him. Derek watches the brain activity on a screen and advises him to focus on his balance. Elise wants to know how it feels to walk again. Pretty good, he replies not convincingly. Derek tells Owen Jason needs to concentrate. Owen tells Elise it's amazing after only a few years. Unbelievable, she agrees. She asks if Dr. Yang's busy, as she would love for her to see this. Owen will check. Meanwhile, Callie asks Jason if he's all right. Jason doesn't reply and falls down. The doctors rush to help him.
Cristina is in her research lab, printing another conduit. Owen comes in, saying he needs her. She's up for it, but can't because these abstracts were supposed to go out an hour ago. However, she says they can do it, but fast. Owen says it's not that. He informs her about Jason Castor's rhenal failure. Cristina doesn't remember who Jason is, so Owen has to remind her. His wife would like to talk to her. Cristina asks if Jason needs a heart consult. No, Owen says, his wife would just like to talk to her because she knows and trusts her. Cristina says she has to finish this, as she's got seven printers going. Owen asks if Ross can't take over. He can't, because Cristina is one step away from funding for animal trials. Cristina notices Owen's disappointed look and says that if Jason is fine, she has no time to hold someone's hand right now. Owen leaves, but comes back, telling her that she was the first doctor Elise met, which is why Elise likes her. Now, she's waiting for Cristina. Cristina says about a million heart patients are too. "Right, you can't let people down," Owen says as he leaves.
Owen meets Elise and gives her a cup of coffee. She wants to know if it happened because of the suit. Owen explains it wasn't, it were Jason's kidneys that failed, which made him pass out. He assures her though that the surgery is going to work. After that, he's going to have to get on dialysis. He says it's just a complication of his condition. "It's all just complications," Elise says. Owen assures her Jason can continue with the trial, but Elise knows he'll use what happened as an excuse to stop it. Jason will never forgive her for making him do it. Owen says she didn't do that, but Elise reveals that during a fight, Jason said that he refused to have the ventilator removed just because he looked at her and that if it had been up to him, if she wasn't there, he would have wanted to die. She and Owen sit down and she says that Jason is now miserable every day because of her and that she herself is not a wife anymore. She's a nursemaid and an orderly and she never goes home from that work. That work is all she is anymore. She then reveals she wanted to have a child and now she will never, ever have one. She apologizes for being selfish and horrible, but Owen gets her and takes her hand to calm down. Elise then kisses him, but Owen stops her. She apologizes.
At Joe's bar, there's a TV show starring Dr. Bailey on the television where she prepares healthy juices. Owen is having a drink and Cristina sits down next to him, commenting something about the TV show. He ignores her. She says she hasn't seen him in two days. That's because he took some extra night shifts. She went by the trailer this morning, but he crashed in the on-call room. Cristina notices he's snappy and asks if something's going on. Owen smiles and says he needs more. He can't just keep having sex only. He needs more from her, more from them. He orders another drink. Cristina proposes to get out of here, but he refuses. She wants to go home and sleep this off so they can talk in the morning, but he replies they don't have a home. He has the trailer and she has a room at Karev's house, that's not a home. Owen urges the bartender to bring him another drink. Cristina leaves on her own as Owen gets his drink.
Meredith and Cristina are now lying in Cristina's bed. Meredith and Derek adopted again, so now the children outnumber the adults. She questions what'll happen when there's mutiny. She thinks she and Derek will lose, but Cristina says that won't happen until the third one can walk. "So, you broke up again?" Meredith asks. Cristina says it's the just same thing, happening over and over. Meredith says this is also the same, them lying in the bed talking about Cristina and Owen. She asks why Cristina keeps doing this to herself. Cristina starts crying and says she needs help. Meredith has to help her by not letting her go back to him, for his good and hers. Meredith says shell of course help her.
Jackson asks Owen what he means. It's been six months since his last procedure. Owen yells his hand is still not healed. He needs more PT and more time in the skills lab. Jackson is not stepping into that OR today, maybe not ever. Jackson tells him that he needs to lower his voice, but this results in Owen getting even more angry. He loudly questions why no one can yell at him. Is it because he's an Avery? Jackson says that has nothing to do with it. Owen starts calling him a pampered rich boy who was gifted a hospital and thereby thinks he can go ahead and endanger patients because he's too damn proud to admit that he can't operate anymore. Meanwhile, Cristina and Bailey have come over. "Dr. Hunt!" the latter yells to quiet him. Owen leaves.
Cristina enters the ER, where a now-attending Stephanie apologizes. Cristina was just about to do a unique surgery with a robot, and now Shane has to finish it because Stephanie had her paged 911 like a million times. Stephanie tells her it's Owen. He wanted to work a shift, but Stephanie didn't feel comfortable about that. Owen only agreed to lay down on a bed if she paged Cristina. They walk up to Owen's bed and Stephanie gives them a minute. A clearly drunk Owen tries to get up, but Cristina pushes him back down. Cristina says he stinks and asks if he's insane for having wanted to start a shift, because he could've hurt someone. Owen blurts out he loves her. He repeats it a couple of times and asks how he's supposed to keep doing this and working here while he sees her every day. Cristina clearly feels uncomfortable. He grabs her and asks her to marry him, over and over. He starts begging her, they should never have called it quits. Cristina is scared by his behavior and hugs him to calm him down.
Cristina is wearing a white dress and watches herself in the mirror. Meredith comes and tells her there's no sign of him yet, but there's still plenty of time, so no need for her to panic. Cristina says she's not panicked and asks for assistance to put on her belt. Meredith compliments her. Cristina asks how he could be late to this. Meredith leaves to go look for him again.
At the ER, Owen is taking in patients. He doesn't look too good. Paramedic Nicole updates him on one of them and he orders an intern to take the patient up to radiology for a CT with contrast. The patient's mother says she herself is allergic to the iodine dye, that's used for the contrast, so she questions if her daughter could be allergic to it too. Owen says they'll run a test to check for that and he moves on to the next patient.
Cristina is clearly getting nervous and Meredith asks if she wants her to call him again. No, she doesn't. Meredith's phone, which looks really futuristic, makes noise. Meredith checks it and it keeps going off. Cristina says she can go if she has to take that, because it's not like she hasn't been through this with her before, but Meredith tells her it's a general page for whoever's on call, and she's not on call. Meredith will stay with her.
In the scanner, April is taking care of Owen's patient because the intern started freaking out. She informs Arizona that the girl's having a severe allergic reaction. Arizona asks the intern if there were tests for allergies. The intern nods no. Owen comes in as he was paged. Arizona rolls her eyes as she sees Owen. April says they need to get to the OR stat. Arizona asks Owen if this is his patient. It is. She asks why he didn't test for allergies, but he says he did. There's no record for any test. He says he ordered the test. She asks if he's sure. He is. She repeats her question. He yells he ordered the damn test, but then starts doubting.
Shane enters the room. Cristina and Meredith are relieved he's there. "Cutting it a little close, don't you think?" Meredith asks him. He apologizes for being late, but it was due to the traffic. He's wearing a tuxedo and Cristina rightens his jacket. He says she looks incredible. She smiles and thanks him. "Shall we do this?" he asks. "Let's," she replies.
Owen is arguing with a nurse, who's holding a breathalyzer. Outside the room, Arizona tells Derek this is unacceptable. Things like this keep happening and this time, there was a kid involved. She refuses to look it away any longer. He's unreliable and a danger to his patient. She asks if Derek smelled his breath. Derek wants to wait for the breathalyzer results, but Arizona already knows what they'll be. She says they need an emergency board meeting, right now.
At the Harper Avery Awards, this time it's Shane who's speaking. He says she's a pioneer, an inspiration, a mentor, and he's proud to call her his friend for over 15 years. He asks the audience to welcome for an impressed and fourth consecutive year, this year's Harper Avery Award recipient Dr. Cristina Yang. As Cristina walks onto the stage, Meredith gets paged 911 by Derek.
Meredith enters the conference room, saying she came as soon as she could. She tells them Owen is just sitting out there, waiting. Derek says April, who's sitting in front of them, runs the trauma department and thereby works more closely with him than anybody else. Callie asks if she trusts Owen Hunt to treat patients. April says he's her mentor, he trained her. Richard says they value her opinion but advises her to be honest. Does she trust the man? After some inner conflict and tears, she says she doesn't. Arizona says she wants to move to terminate him, effective, immediately.
At the Harper Avery Awards, Cristina is giving her speech. She says that if there's one things she's learned over the past few years is that it only takes one person, one patient, one moment to change your life forever. To change your perspective, color your thinking, to force you to reevaluate everything you think you know.
"To make you ask yourself the toughest questions," the speech continues in voice over while we see the board members have a discussion.
"Do you know who you are?" Cristina asks. Meanwhile, Owen is sitting outside the conference room, waiting for a decision.
"Do you understand what's happened to you? Do you want to live this way?" Cristina finishes her speech. Everyone stands up and starts applauding.
Reality
Cristina apologizes, but she has to ask one more time. "Jason, would you like me to remove the vent?" she asks. He looks at a crying Elise and nods yes. "Okay," Cristina says.
Again, Cristina is visibly depressed as she walks into the hall. She puts away her tablet and watches Owen wait for the elevator to arrive. Jackson and the orderly are again moving the rollable computer. Cristina warns Jackson to watch his hand. He thanks her and now does not hurt it. Just as Cristina starts walking towards Owen, Meredith comes over, asking her for a set of advice on her patient. Cristina starts asking to give her a minute, but she then sees the elevator arrives and Owen smiles at her as he gets on. Never mind, she says, and asks Meredith what she got. They walk off as the screen fades to black.

Notes and Trivia[]
- This episode's title originated from the song Do You Know?, originally sung by Enrique Iglesias.
- This episode scored 8.42 million viewers.[1]
- The table read for this episode took place on January 22, 2014.[2]
- Filming for this episode was scheduled from January 24 to February 6, 2014.[source?]
- Both of the realities imagined by Cristina span 15 years.
- The episode gives us a look at which specialties Jo, Stephanie, and Shane are likely to choose: peds, trauma, and cardiothoracics, respectively.
- In the reality where Cristina and Owen decide to get together and get a baby, they name their baby Theo. It's possible they named him after Teddy Altman, whose full first name is Theodora.
- In the reality where Cristina chose not to stay with Owen, April is Head of Trauma Surgery.
- Leah Murphy does not appear in the aired version of the episode, but she does appear in scenes that were cut.
- This is the first episode to show the current residents (minus Leah) in navy blue scrubs.
- In a deleted scene, the residents come back after having taken their boards and they all have passed. Their attendings congratulate them. Stephanie tells April she couldn't have done it without her and they hug. Leah thanks Callie and Arizona for having put all their stuff behind them and for having seen her through the program, but since she's going to Mayo, she takes the opportunity to say she hates them both and tells them to go to hell. As she goes inside, Jo says yes to Alex's marriage proposal with Cristina commenting it was about time. Shane tells Cristina he turned down Stanford to stay at Grey Sloan to work on the Yang method with her.
- In both alternative realities, the women's scrubs changes to include lighter blue patches on the shoulders and the neckline. It is interesting to note that in the other alternative reality episode If/Then, women's and men's scrubs were also different, but in the main reality, everyone has always had gender-neutral scrubs, and they never changed.

Quotes[]
- Owen: Hey, you.
- Cristina: What are we doing? What the hell are we doing?
- Owen: I'm waiting for an elevator?
- Cristina: I just spent my day saving the life of a man who's now choosing to die and all I keep thinking is... You and I are throwing so much away. We should be together. You're the love of my life and it is stupid, just stupid for us to keep pretending. I love you. I wanna be with you. For real, forever, it's as simple as that.
- (right after having had sex)
- Cristina: That's it. We've christened every room in this house.
- (in a dog shelter)
- Owen: He is gorgeous!
- Cristina: No.
- Owen: Oh, okay. Uhm, this one!
- Cristina: I agreed to a dog, not a horse.
- Owen: That is a mid-sized dog.
- Cristina: No, that is huge. And you know what a big dog makes.
- Owen: What?
- Cristina: Big poop. That thing could crap my entire body weight in a day.
- Owen: That is a beautiful image, thank you for...
- (Cristina moved on to the next dog.)
- Cristina: That one.
- Owen: What?
- Cristina: That's the one.
- Owen: No. No, that is not even a dog. That is a rodent and it looks mean.
- Cristina: Hey, we want this thing in here! Can someone get it out?
- Alex: You got a dog?
- Cristina: Yes.
- Alex: That thing's gonna be dead in a week.
- Shane: You named your dog Mrs. Rodriguez?
- Cristina: When you meet him, you'll understand.
- Alex: Meet him soon, before he dies.
- Cristina: What? I'm a physician! It's not like I'm gonna have trouble keeping an animal alive.
- Meredith: I can't believe you're gonna dress the dog in my son's sweater.
- Cristina: Mrs. Rodriguez gets cold. He doesn't have the constitution for all this damp and rain. He gets the shakes.
- (Meredith laughs.)
- Cristina: What?
- Meredith: You like the dog.
- Cristina: He's an unusual dog. It's not like I'm becoming someone who likes dogs. He just happens to relate to people like I do.
- Meredith: Uhu.
- Cristina: It's true. I mean, he doesn't wanna talk about his feelings, or the future. If I walk him and feed him on a regular schedule, he'll crawl up next to me on the couch. And if I don't, he'll bite my ankles. It's a set of behaviors that makes sense to me.
- Meredith: You like the dog. The dog gets you. You're alike. That's the way I talk about my children. You have a baby!
- Cristina: Oh!
- Meredith: A dog baby!
- (A pregnant Cristina bumps into a pregnant April.)
- April: Oh! Hi! Hey, who'd have thunk it? You and me, we're belly-buddies.
- Cristina: No, we're not.
- Cristina: Every day I go to work. I do my job. Then I come home and do that job. I'm so tired. It's like I'm sleepwalking all the time.
- Meredith: Well, you're well into your second trimester now, so that'll start getting better.
- Cristina: It's not the pregnancy.
- Meredith: Cristina...
- Cristina: Look how happy he is.
- Owen: Hey, you.
- Cristina: I just spent my day saving the life of a man who could've chosen to die, but didn't. I repaired a heart that was impossible to repair. I achieved the impossible today and it feels good. No, more, it feels incredible. What are you doing right now?
- Owen: Waiting for the elevator.
- Cristina: Yeah, we're gonna have to take the stairs because I just finished my shift and I feel like celebrating. Tonight. Naked. With you.
- Owen: Oh, I could be into that.
- Cristina: It's over. You know, this time, Owen and I are really over. I mean, we can't keep falling back into the same pattern, it's just... Mer? Are you awake?
- Meredith: (waking up) Yeah, you and Owen are over again. I'm totally listening. Continue.
- Cristina: Well, see, that's the point. It can't continue the way it is, it's not good, it's not healthy.
- Cristina: I would never ask you for that.
- Owen: You're not asking. I am telling you.
- Cristina: Well, I don't believe you.
- Owen: Cristina, people change. You're not the same person you were when we met. I can change too.
- Cristina: Really? People who want kids don't just stop wanting them. Don't give up things for me.
- Owen: Hey, I'm not. I have it. I'm not giving up anything.
- Cristina: I need help. Mer, you have to help me. Don't let me go back to him. For his good and mine. Please, help me.
- Meredith: Of course, of course I'll help you.
