“ | On average, the fastest your heart should beat per minute is 220 minus your age. But ideally, vigorous exercise is between 70 and 85% of your maximum heart rate. Exceeding your maximum heart rate can result in dizziness, chest pain, or even fainting. So listen to your body and don't push your limits. When you want something badly, it's hard to know if or when to throw in the towel. So, we push the limits, hoping if we put in a little more time, more effort, maybe it will all work out. Or, you could crash and burn, taking everything you love down with you. But you won't know until you try. | ” |
Don't You (Forget About Me) is the thirteenth episode of the twenty-first season and the 443rd overall episode of Grey's Anatomy.
Short Summary[]
Amelia and Simone attempt to perform a high-stakes and groundbreaking brain surgery. Teddy and Bailey attend a medical conference and run into Dr. Cass Beckman. Meanwhile, Jo struggles with her irritation toward a younger OB-GYN.
Full Summary[]
As they hear the muffled sounds of Molly and Dave fighting outside, Simone asks Benson why Dave's still in Seattle. Benson says he won't leave without Molly and Molly wants to wait him out. Benson wants to deck him, but he's not as patient as Molly. Simone is reviewing Molly's scans to be ready for her surgery.
Teddy asks Owen about Allison's blanket, because his mom says it's not in her bag. Owen says he put it in her backpack. Teddy wonders what he's going to do with the whole house to himself. His plan is to sleep, which makes Teddy jealous. She has a busy schedule at the conference. He suggests she skip something to get a massage or do something else for herself. Bailey interrupts their conversation with a honk and they kiss goodbye. Owen reminds them what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Bailey replies that they're going to Oakland.
Amelia is surprised to see Nick talking to Richard by the surgical board. He's there to help Richard with one of his old patients. Amelia jokes about him being her boss now. He tells Richard that he's helping fund their research and he's a totally silent partner. Richard asks if Amelia is going to Boston because he'll take Simone on his service. Simone's been helping Amelia prep for Molly's surgery. She's the intern to watch. Nick asks how Lucas is doing. Richard says Nick can tell for himself because he's on their case.
Jo asks Ben if he knows how lucky he is not to have to worry about vaginal tears. She just sewed one up on her patient. He starts to talk about the plight of men, but then corrects himself and just says that's awful. Marcus comes up behind them and tells Jo her patient, Mrs. Badgley, started bleeding. He took the liberty of talking to the attending to get her surgery pushed up. He figured she wouldn't want to be on her feet for a long "surge" and Dr. Kincade approved it. Ben is shocked that Jo let Marcus shark her. She says that he saved her babies. That's all she can think about when she sees him.
Lucas tries to take one of Jules's coffees, but she slaps his hand away and asks if he's exported his cases yet. He's confused and she says it's for their meeting with Bailey for the end of the year before realizing Lucas won't have that because he has to remediate. She tries to console him by saying she'll be able to help him next year. When she sees Winston walking past, Jules jumps up and gives him one of the coffees as a thank you for agreeing to help her get her first solo surgery. She promises she won't let him down. He tells her the first lesson is to underpromise and overdeliver.
Owen finds Nora in the ER. He just got her text. She introduces him to her friend, Liz Fletcher, who is in a hurry because she has a high school reunion to pull off. Liz is nineteen weeks pregnant and it was an easy pregnancy until a few days ago, when she developed indigestion, shortness of breath, and pressure in her chest. Nora adds that she has pre-existing mitral valve prolapse, so Nora forced her to come to the ER. Liz says she has to be at the reunion because she's the committee chair. Liz is surprised to learn that Owen went to their high school and didn't even know Megan had a brother. Owen says he's going to page OB and cardio to consult while he runs some tests.
Lucas presents the case of Allan Lewis, who developed post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder after his third kidney transplant. He's had eight rounds of chemotherapy and is in the hospital to have surgery to debulk the tumor before his next round of chemo. Shelby Lewis, his sister and donor, tells them it's not the kidney's fault. He wouldn't have asked her if he weren't such a hard match. His other two donors came through UNOS. The siblings bicker over their late mother. Allan says Shelby came through for him when he needed her, but there was a time when they weren't speaking. Nick says they need to get new scans and they'll make a plan from there.
At the conference, Teddy sees Cass walking with a man. After the man walks away, Cass says that she and the man sometimes plan to attend the same conferences, so they can balance the boring panels with extracurricular activities. Teddy asks if David is there and Cass says he's covering his chief's service while she attends. Teddy realizes she knew that. Cass asks about Owen and Teddy says he's not there either. Bailey comes up to Teddy in a panic, asking for help.
A large crowd gathers in Molly's room as Simone presents her case and explains the surgery to Molly. Molly is most concerned with getting her memory back. Amelia explains how they'll stimulate different areas of her brain. Amelia warns her that it's never been proven to work. Benson's worried that the stimulation will cause seizures. Amelia says that's possible, but she hopes the device will stop them. Benson asks Molly if she's sure she wants to do this and asks what her parents think. She says they were nervous, but calmed down when she sent them Amelia's biography. She wants her memories. She just didn't realize so many people would be watching. Benson excuses himself when he sees Dave standing outside the room. He confronts Dave, who says that Molly isn't telling him everything he needs to know.
Bailey explains that while doing her test run in the auditorium, her presentation was messed up. Cass thinks the slides must be formatted to the wrong size. The AV guy said the same thing and also said the only way to fix it was to redo it. She doesn't know how long the first one took because she paid Tuck to do it. Teddy tells Cass that Bailey's program about the reproductive health clinic and how they're training doctors from abortion-hostile states, then says Cass helped her with a presentation and is very good at them. Cass agrees to help out.
Simone aligns the MRI and CT images to give Amelia a 3D picture of Molly's brain. Amelia asks which approach Simone suggests. Simone thinks trans-frontal. It's a good thought, but they're doing frontal temporal. As they continue working through the plan, Simone expresses concern that they'll trigger a seizure and have to put her in a coma. Amelia doesn't let herself think like that. She recognizes that Simone is the intern to watch. Simone brushes it off, but Amelia warns her not to dismiss herself the way others will. It's crucial that she follow Amelia's lead in surgery because Molly will be awake. As far as Molly is concerned, everything is fine.
Winston tells Liz her labs looked good. Liz wants to go back to reunion-planning. Jules says because her symptoms are new to her, they still want to run more tests. Liz asks for her phone so she can call her second-in-command who is sure to ruin things. Nora says Liz is her personal hero for having a baby on her own. It wasn't Liz's original plan, but she's been through all the eligible bachelors in Seattle. None of them were right for her and she's not getting younger. When Liz turns, Jo notices and asks about a lump in her neck. Liz didn't know she had one, so Jo calls for an ultrasound machine.
Benson finds Dave outside and says Molly's about to go into surgery, so he needs to make it quick. Dave says Benson can't let Molly do the experimental part of the surgery. He explains that Molly spent every penny she had trying everything she could to get her memories back and when it didn't work, it sent her into a deep depression. Her parents finally talked her into getting help. Benson says Molly never told him that, which Dave takes to mean she didn't want him to know. Dave loves her and couldn't live with himself if something bad happened to her. Everything she's doing feels like it's leading to another crash. Benson tells Dave that he needs to get over it because Molly picked him.
Nora gives directions over the phone. Owen comes over and asks if she's okay. She says Bobby is now in charge. She starts to explain why the reunions are important, then realizes they probably actually aren't. Owen says reconnecting can be pretty great. Nora asks if she should have taken Liz somewhere else because last time, Owen didn't want to be part of her care team. Owen says it's all above-board, so Nora asks him to sit with her a little longer because her friend might be sick.
Nick points out all the kidneys in Allan's body, then points out the mass. Fortunately, it's not kinking the vasculature of his working kidney. Nick says they need to debulk enough that chemotherapy has a shot at killing the remaining cells. Ben asks about removing the native kidney and offers to help. Nick says it's not necessary, but it's good that he's looking ahead. As he and Richard leave, Lucas says it was bold of Ben to ask. Ben says that's how you get opportunities. Lucas tries to use the same technique on Ben, but it doesn't work.
Jo rants about Liz's second-in-command as they wait for her scans. She relates the surgery to her situation with Marcus. She feels like she can't confront him because he saved her babies. Jules says he didn't say her babies. When the scan comes up, they all lean closer.
Liz asks if it's cancer. Winston says no and Jo adds that she has a rare condition that allows undigested food to collect in her esophagus. It's hard to know how long it's been there. Winston says they'll run a scope down and clean it all out. Liz leans over and vomits on Jo.
Molly's on the way to surgery. Benson comes up to hold her hand. Molly says the next time she sees him, she could have all her memories back. Benson reminds her that it's almost impossible that it'll work. He wants her to be okay if it doesn't. Molly says there are other experimental treatments to try if this one doesn't work. Benson tells her about Dave coming to the hospital, but lies and says he just wanted to make sure she'll be okay. Molly says she will be and asks if Benson will be there when she gets out. He promises her he will. He stops Simone before she goes in and makes her promise not to tell Amelia push things in there. She's on top so she has more influence than she thinks she does. Simone says she has him.
Nora comes back to Liz and asks about the lump. Liz explains what happened and Winston explains how it happened. Liz asks if it'll be that way for the rest of her pregnancy. Jules tells her it won't, that they'll remove the food with the scope and inject botox into the sphincter to get it to relax and let food in. Liz realizes it'll take a while and gives Nora directions. As they walk away, Winston tells Jules to brush on her EGD skills so she can do Liz's procedure.
Cass is working on Bailey's presentation. She can copy the pictures, but not the text, so she has Teddy read it to her. Cass asks about the Catherine Fox Award Bailey won for her work. Bailey says it felt like an accomplishment at the time. Now it feels like she's not doing enough. Cass says she understands, but programs like Bailey's are a beacon of hope. She asks Teddy to read the next bullet, but Teddy is distracted.
Amelia has placed the DBS and checks on Molly, who doesn't feel a thing, but can hear the tools. She asks if they're almost there. They're about to connect the panel to stop the seizures. Molly is relieved. She asks if Amelia is starting on the memory part soon. Amelia says it'll be a minute. They have to adjust the settings. It works and now it's time to place the grid for memory retrieval.
Allan tries to say it wasn't that bad, but Shelby tells him to let Lucas check him out. Lucas notes his urine output is low. He does an ultrasound as Shelby and Allan continue to bicker. Allan has a sudden pain in his kidney and Lucas says a clot is cutting off blood flow to his kidney. They need to get him into surgery immediately or he could lose it.
Cass finished fixing Bailey's presentation. Bailey thanks her and Cass says she's hungry. Bailey hands her a whole basket of snacks and steps away to take a phone call. Teddy tells Cass she saved the day and Cass says this saved her from haven't to go to her boss's panel. She leans toward Teddy to reach Bailey's thumb drive. Teddy asks if Cass wants to skip the afternoon lectures. They've seen Bailey's presentation. Cass says she's supposed to meet up with Phil later and Teddy proposes meeting up with her instead. Cass told Teddy to let her know when she figured it out and she's figured it out. Bailey comes back in and they separate. Cass offers Bailey her drive, but Bailey asks Cass to keep it until they get there because she's worried she'll drop it. She wants to be sure Teddy and Cass are coming because she's been having stress dreams of an empty room. They both say they're coming.
Richard and Nick work to try to save Allan's kidney. They've removed the clot and now they have to wait for the kidney to turn pink before they go after the tumor. Unfortunately, the kidney doesn't recover. It's dead. They have to remove it. Lucas says he has to be in remission to get on the transplant list, which could take months, but Nick says it's their only option. Maybe he'll get lucky a fourth time. Lucas doesn't like that option. Nick gives Lucas an opportunity to do part of the surgery.
Winston and Jules do Liz's scope while Jo monitors. Winston gets a notification about a patient of his being in the ICU, post-CABG. Marcus peeks in to tell Jo that Mrs. Badgley had hemorrhaged in surgery. Jo is appalled that he did a hysterectomy on her patient. Once he's gone, Jo says she's going to tear him limb from limb. Winston compliments Jules' technique and says they'll be out of there soon. She says her parents used to drop her off at the arcade every day and she would play the claw machine for six hours straight.
Amelia reminds Molly to let them know if she sees anything, no matter how faint. She can also stop if Molly is uncomfortable. Simone starts to get worried about the possibility of a seizure as Amelia increases the frequency. Simone suddenly says she's going to stop, but Amelia tells her to push the button. If she can't, she has to leave. Molly says she sees something.
Amelia asks Molly what she sees. Molly says she's outside walking near a lake. She sees mountains. When Amelia turns off the stimulation, the memory goes away. Simone asks if it's time to close. Amelia says that's not why she stopped and has Simone hand her the control panel. They have to verify that the stimulation is bringing on the memory. Simone tries to object, but Amelia ignores her and turns the stimulation back on. Molly sees the memory again. There's a man in a red jacket there, far ahead. She turns it off and the memory goes away again. Back on and Molly describes pulling a map out of her pocket. Amelia turns down the stimulation and says it's time to remove the grid. Molly asks her not to stop, but they can't risk more seizure activity.
Jules and Winston tell Liz her procedure went well. She just needs to take it easy for a few days. Liz says she'll take it easy after the union, but Jo stops her from getting out of bed, saying she needs to rest or she'll end up back in the hospital. Liz is upset about that, so Jo suggests that she send Nora to make sure Bobby doesn't mess everything up. Liz tells Nora to go to the reunion and telly Bobby he's out.
Richard tells Allan they were able to debulk the mass. Allan knows there's bad new coming and Nick tells him about his kidney. It's back to dialysis. Ben says he can get back on the transplant list once he's in remission, but he's already had three transplants. He doesn't think he'll be able to get another match. Before his first transplant, he made a bucket list. He thought he'd be lucky to do half, but he did all of them. Organ donors gave her a second, third, and fourth chance at life. He's happy with what he did with those chances, so he's at peace if this is it. Shelby says he could call Gary, but Allan refuses to call Gary, their brother.
Benson tells Simone that Molly, who is still asleep after her surgery, loved Big Sky. They went a few times. He can't believe she actually remembered something. Simone says it was right down to his red jacket. As Simone leaves, Molly wakes up. She wishes her brain could hold on to memories when it's not being stimulated. Benson asks if Dave has a red jacket and if she ever went to Big Sky with him. She realizes that she was remembering a visit with Dave, not Benson, meaning the memory was from after the crash. Benson says she doesn't need to remember anything for them to have a future together. Molly knows it's all in her brain. She just can't get to it. They have to unlock it. Benson is worried about her, but she says the worst has already happened. She lost her life. He doesn't think that's true. Then he tells her to rest.
Owen texts Teddy, then talks to Nora. Liz is being discharged but she needs to rest, so she's sending Nora to take care of the reunion. She wishes Megan could be there to help. Owen offers to go with Nora instead. Nora asks about Teddy, but Owen says they've agreed that they can see other people. He'll go home and change, then come pick her up.
Bailey gives her presentation. In the audience, Cass and Teddy start to touch each other suggestively.
Cass pushes Teddy up against the wall and kisses her. They undress each other.
Cass and Teddy move to the bed. When Teddy freezes, Cass pulls back and asks if she's okay. Teddy says she is and tries to start things again, but then she stops and says she feels like she's cheating on her husband. She asks if that's how Cass felt when she first opened her marriage. Cass says no, their marriage was suffocating them and being with other people felt like breathing fresh air. Teddy tells Cass she's amazing, but this won't fix her marriage. She apologizes to Cass.
Jules updates Winston on Liz. He says she handled it like an experienced surgeon. She has trouble taking the compliment. Winston invites her to scrub in, which she does eagerly. He talks her through the procedure.
Benson sits by Molly's bedside as Simone watches. When Amelia comes, Simone says her EEG is stable. She apologizes for challenging Amelia. Amelia knows Benson was in her head. Simone's star is on the rise, but that's not the same as Amelia's years of experience. She has to keep what she knows about a patient's family out of the OR. Simone promises to do that and Amelia has her write the case up for grand rounds.
Marcus finds Jo in the locker room. She stops him before he can say anything and says he saved her babies, but he can't walk over her. They're colleagues. He says he was trying to help, but she says she can advocate for herself. Ben watches as Marcus leaves and asks Jo about it. Jo invites Ben to go with her to get a burger. He agrees as long as he doesn't have to talk about vaginal tears.
Benson hands Molly some saltines. She loves them and never let him throw them away when they got soup. Molly asks what kind of soup. Benson tells her, then says he called her parents. He was worried and now he knows that her parents had no idea she was having the surgery or that she and Benson were back together. She lied to him and he thinks she knows she's on a slippery slope. She says this isn't like last time, but he's concerned that she didn't tell him about that herself. She thinks she's so close to remembering, but he says no one with retrograde amnesia has ever gotten their memories back. She says the day she saw him in the ER was the firs time she felt like a piece of her old life was trying to resurface. She wants to remember everything. She doesn't feel whole without the memories. Benson asks if she's only with him because it might help her get her memory back. She admits she doesn't know. Benson pulls away from her.
Lucas updates Nick on Allan. Nick says he made a great catch. Allan could have died. Lucas doesn't understand why Allan won't call his brother. Nick says sometimes people are their own biggest obstacles. Lucas asks if Nick thinks he needs to repeat his intern year. He knows Nick thinks internships should be longer, but the rest of his class is moving on. If he has to repeat, it'll go on his record. Competitive slots will be off the table for him. His skills are as good as his classmates, so he doesn't think his career should suffer because he tried to save someone who was going to die anyway. Nick says it's up to Catherine Fox and he doesn't know if Lucas can change her mind, but he knows someone who might.
Lucas asks Richard for any suggestions to talk to Catherine. Richard tells a story of surprising her with a trip to the Maldives. Her favorite part of the trip was the Seattle Roasted Coffee in their room. Once Catherine makes up her mind about something, she needs a really good reason to change it and he doesn't have it.
Simone sits next to Benson, saying she'll buy his next drink. She's excited to be presenting at grand rounds. Benson tells her he and Molly over. She says she's sorry and asks if it was Dave. Lucas joins them and asks the same question. Then Jules comes in, celebrating her win, and Simone tells her the news, warning her not to ask about Dave, but she doesn't even know who Dave is. Benson doesn't want them to talk about him in front of him. Jules orders a drink and one for Benson.
Bailey opens her hotel room does and is disappointed to see Teddy instead of her room service. Bailey makes Teddy a drink. Teddy congratulates her on her presentation and Bailey asks where she and Cass went. Teddy says they ended up leaving, but Bailey doesn't need to know where they went because she works with both their husbands. Teddy says they went to another panel. It's not what Bailey expected or what Teddy expected either. Teddy texts Owen.
Owen's phone sits on the nightstand as he and Nora have sex.

Owen ordered labs and an EKG as well as a consult from cardio and OB/GYN. Her test results all came back normal, but Jo noticed a lump on her neck. They did a CT, which showed that food had built up in her esophagus because the sphincter to her stomach wasn't opening to let food pass. They told her they'd run a scope down her throat and clean it all out, then inject botox to relax the sphincter. This went well and she was able to digest a meal afterward.
