Dorian Cardenas is a patient who came in after being shot three times.
History[]
Dorian came into the ER with three gun shot wounds, including two that had gone through. An x-ray showed bilateral hemopneumothoraces. While they examined him, they were shocked to find a large amount of cash on his body. Bailey had Lucas bag it and take it to security to lock it up. He coded, so they did a thoracotomy in the ER and Winston massaged his heart. After 20 minutes, Winston stopped the massage and prepared to call time of death, but Benson Kwan asked if he could practice cardiac massage on him. Winston allowed it and Kwan stepped in, only to be shocked when Dorian's heart started beating. They moved him to the OR, where they removed his spleen and repaired the damage to his bowels and lung. After surgery, he was in the ICU in critical, but stable, condition. His parents saw the police searching for his identity and responded, coming to the hospital to identify him. ("Keep the Family Close")
Six days after his first surgery, Dorian was taken back in for an abdominal washout. He was stable in the ICU and Mika and Lucas were assigned to monitor him. He was stable for much of the day, but then he crashed. Mika examined him and diagnosed abdominal compartment syndrome. While she went to get a cutdown tray, Bailey came in and Lucas told her it was abdominal compartment syndrome. She had Lucas gown and glove to open up Dorian in his room. They then moved him to the OR for an exploratory laparotomy. ("Walk on the Ocean")
When Dorian woke up, he attempted to pull out his central line. He asked what had happened to him and learned he'd been shot and that his family had visited him every day. He was also told he'd be at the hospital at least until they ensured that he would still get proper nutrition with the portion of the bowel he had left. They ran tests and found signs of infection, so they pulled the line and placed one on the other side. While Benson Kwan was placing the new line, Dorian's lung collapsed. Kwan was unable to place a chest tube, so Levi Schmitt stepped in and placed it, relieving the pressure on Dorian's chest. After the tube was placed, Kwan restarted Dorian's trickle feeds. ("Baby Can I Hold You")
Dorian struggled with being unable to eat or leave the hospital. Labs showed low hemoglobin, but when they tried to check him again, he refused to let them draw any more blood or do any more tests. He persisted in his refusal until he started coughing up blood. Richard did an endoscopy, which showed an upper GI bleed due to an ulcer. Richard was able to clip the bleed and he stabilized. After this, Lucas talked to him and Dorian admitted that he was only in school to please his parents, who wanted him to be an engineer. Lucas convinced him to hang in there and let the doctors help him. ("The Marathon Continues")
Fifty-one days after he was shot, Dorian was told he was stable enough to move out of the ICU to the next level of care. He was tolerating a liquid diet. While two friends from graduate school, James and Viona, were visiting him, he asked them to step out, then told the doctors he thought his ostomy was leaking. Instead, they found that it was fluids. He'd developed an enterocutaneous fistula and needed surgery to repair it. They also contemplated moving him back to the ICU. ("She Used to Be Mine")
On his fifty-sixth day in the hospital, Dorian had surgery to takedown his fistula. They said they would also try to reverse his ostomy, which excited him, as it was a step back toward solid food. Unfortunately, when they opened him up, they found he had a frozen abdomen. After removing the adhesions, Bailey realized they'd have to remove more of his bowel, which would leave him reliant on TPN for nutrition. Wanting to avoid this, Simone suggested a STEP procedure, which was not often done in adults. While they were doing that, Dorian coded. He was resuscitated with difficulty and after surgery, he was back in the ICU. ("Blood, Sweat and Tears")
After that surgery, Dorian started to recover and was able to go from a liquid diet to soft foods. ("I Carry Your Heart")
Finally, when the Fall City Wildfire victims took over most of the hospital's beds, leaving none available for Dorian to stay, he was discharged to a skilled nursing facility. Before he left, he used his mother's connections from her time working for the city to spread an app that could be used to mark people safe during disasters. ("Burn It Down")
