Dylan Gatlin is a patient who had high-risk surgery to remove an angioma from her brain stem.
History[]
Dylan was on a camping trip supervised by her parents when she fell out of a tree and broke her radius. She was taken to the hospital, where they did a CT to check for head trauma and incidentally found a cavernous angioma on her brain stem. She was admitted to the hospital and Amelia Shepherd consulted on the case and found a way to use new MRI technology to map the pathways in Dylan's brain in order to avoid cutting through any of them. Dylan's parents agreed to the surgery, but when the time came, Dylan panicked and begged them not to make her go. Her father, Aaron, briefly reconsidered if it was really what was best for Dylan, but after speaking to Amelia and Monica about how it would affect the quality of her life and they wouldn't know how much time they had before it killed her, they decided to go forward with the surgery. To make it easier for Dylan, her mother, Jenna, was allowed to come into the OR with her and hold her hand while she went under anesthesia. Dylan's surgery went well and she was awake and happily talking to her parents and doctors. She went to sleep that night and in the morning, her eyes were open, but she was totally unresponsive. Her parents went to get Lucas Adams, who called a code and began resuscitating Dylan. ("Papa Was a Rollin' Stone")
Dylan was able to be resuscitated, but she developed locked-in syndrome and was only able to respond to people by blinking to answer questions. She had daily MRIs, but had no change four days later. Her parents were frustrated, but Lucas told them they just needed to wait a few more days before Amelia would be able to operate and fix Dylan. While they waited, Dylan stopped responding to any commands, upsetting her parents, who were angry that the doctors weren't doing anything. ("Love You Like a Love Song")
The next day, Dylan's condition remained unchanged. Jenna, desperate to save Dylan, took Amelia hostage and forced her to operate on Dylan. Amelia was able to find and evacuate the bleed and Dylan was stable in the ICU afterward. ("How Do I Live") Dylan remained stable after the explosion on the OR, but Amelia contemplated moving her, because she didn't want her to become the focus of the media around the explosion. ("Only the Strong Survive")
