Everybody Says Don't is the sixth episode and mid-season finale of the sixth season and the 83rd overall episode of Station 19.

Short Summary[]

When a lightning storm crashes a helicopter, the team is drawn away from hosting a fire boot camp for young women, and Natasha calls on Jack to help Vic run the camp instead. As the storm brews outside, things get even more heated inside between Carina and Maya.

Full Summary[]

Vic loads boxes into the back of her car. She calls Maya.

Maya lets her phone ring out and tries to go back to sleep. Carina's phone rings. It's Vic, who asks Carina to put her on speaker so she can talk to Maya. Maya tells Vic she'll see her later and hangs up. Maya gets out of bed, ignoring her swollen ankle, and tells Carina she's going for a run. Carina tells her she took a pregnancy test the other day because she needed to know. It was negative. Maya is upset that Carina took the test without her. Carina upset that that's the part Maya is fixated on, instead of asking her how she's feeling or what they should do next, normal things to say to your wife in that situation. Maya says the normal thing is to take the test together. Maya apologizes, saying she's in shock because she really thought Carina seemed pregnant. She had symptoms, which Carina says were all just symptoms of being a human being. Carina gets up to go to work, saying Bailey's clinic is opening today and she can make a difference there.

Ross tells Sullivan she has to go because of the fire camp and she has to get to 19 early to get eyes on some Beckett stuff. There have been concerns. Sullivan doesn't think he's drinking, but he's not much of a leader. Ross asks how he's getting to work because they drove there together, He suggests riding with her and getting out a few blocks away. She's upset with him for pushing things. She says it's too much. There's a knock at the door, but he says it's just breakfast and goes to answer it.

Travis reminds Vic he has to leave at 12 for the union meeting. Vic says she remembered and he'd also reminded her before. She's upset that he thinks she's the kind of person who can't remember things. He pulls a binder out of his bag that Vic left on the kitchen counter that's for the fire camp. Vic hates that Travis is going to abandon her, but he says she abandoned him because she was supposed to go the union meeting. That was before Eli was running the show and it'll be so much better with him. Way less fun, but better.

Vic finds Andy and rants about Travis's gushing over Eli. Andy also doesn't like Eli. She hates his type. Vic says her description actually sounds good, but Andy reminds her he hasn't actually done anything for the campaign yet. Vic says he will because this is what he does.

Eli tries to rationalize leaking the story about Dixon and Kitty to help Travis's campaign, but Travis doesn't agree, because it puts the people who responded to the call and the program itself at risk. Travis takes the opportunity to introduce Eli to Ben. Ben's in a non-fight of his own with his wife, who is opening a new clinic and wants him to do anesthesia there, even though he has a job at the station. She asked if he wants just on desk duty and he is, most of the time, for their family, but today, he's a firefighter and she can't take that away from him. Vic walks up and asks why Eli is there because the camp isn't a campaign event. Eli says anything can be a campaign event with him around. Eli offers to give her and Andy a hand moving things, but Andy says she's stronger than he is.

Vic has the campers lined up opposite the team. She explains that at the camp, they'll be treated like firefighters. A shift starts with a line-up, so this is their line-up. They're going to introduce themselves with their last names, like real firefighters. She has the team demonstrate first, then has the first go. First is O'Hare, followed by Coles, Davila, and Sophie. The girls laugh because she used her first name. She corrects it to Santos while Vic reassures her. As they move to get started, Theo notes that there's lightning in the area, but Vic thinks it's far enough away.

The firefighters support the girls as they use fire extinguishers. O'Hare is a little starstruck by Maya. She does track and field at her school, plus she listens to Dispatch and hears Maya's name on there. Maya takes some ibuprofen as O'Hare explains that she's a fire nerd. Maya tells her that's good, that she needs to be more determined than anyone else and have the mental and physical strength to work through the pain.

Vic oversees the drills. The storm is getting closer, so Theo tries again to move things inside. This time, Ross agrees and they move everyone inside.

Vic has the girls carry in the cones and directs them to line up. They're interrupted when a call comes in and Vic leads the girls into the station to get them out of the way so the team can leave. Ross sees Beckett meandering toward the barn and pressures him to move more quickly.

Eli takes pictures of Travis as he gets ready to go. Eli tells him not to miss the meeting, but Andy says it's the firefighters union, so surely they'll understand if Travis misses it because he's fighting a fire.

Jack comes into the station. Ross is happy to see him because she needs him to help Vic with the camp. He reminds her that he doesn't work there, but she simply thanks him for volunteering and sends him to the barn.

Station 19 arrives to find a helicopter has crashed. Beckett gives directions, urging them to work quickly because the storm that took the helicopter down could also take them down. Theo calls him out for the way he talks down to the team, saying it's bad for morale. Beckett brushes him off. Theo goes to Andy and tells her Maya's not okay. Andy goes to check on her, but Beckett sends her back to her assigned task.

Travis and Ben talk to the passengers through the window. Isabel says she's okay, but Jonathan Bright has a bar impaled through his thigh. Ben says he's seen worse. Jonathan says he reminds him of Isabel, the best producer ever, who is always trying to keep people calm and alive. Isabel blames herself for insisting that they fly in the storm, but Jonathan says she didn't force him. Ben puts a collar on Isabel so they can work on getting her out. She asks about the pilot and Travis tells her the others are working on him.

Vic rolls out a hose smoothly, impressing the girls. Jack goes next, but his is crooked, which makes the girls laugh. O'Hare goes next and gets it straight. Next is Santos, who fails. Vic tells her to try again, but she doesn't want to. Vic pulls her aside and she asks to leave because she doesn't think she's any good at it. Vic says she wasn't great at it when she was at the academy, but she's great at it now. It's more about her head than anything physical and she's clearly one of the smartest ones there because only smart people make themselves nuts over what they're good at or not good at. She tells Santos try again. Ross compliments Vic for her handling of the situation, then asks her what she thinks of Beckett. Vic tries to be diplomatic, but when pushed, says Beckett is a bare-minimum guy in a house full of over-achievers. Ross thanks her for articulating so well what she herself struggled to put into words.

Andy introduces herself and Sullivan to Omar, the pilot. He tried to land to take the brunt of the impact. Sullivan says he succeeded and it looks like his passengers will live because of him. He's a hero. As Andy tries to figure out how to free him, Omar sees his father and starts talking to him. After a few moments, he dies. Sullivan says he gave his life to save his passengers.

Jack and Vic coach the girls through CPR, but the girls are bored. Jack wants to jazz it up by having them do compressions to a song. He picks Baby Shark, which makes the girls cringe. He tells them CPR is important, even though they're bored. Ross backs that up and tells them a story of saving another soldier's life doing CPR over the course of four hours as he kept losing his pulse. Vic and Jack plus all the girls are impressed by her story. They go back to practicing their compressions.

Once the door is off the helicopter, Ben, Travis, and Theo pull Isabel to safety. She doesn't want to leave Jonathan, but they assure her he's coming out next. She asks about Omar as well, but they just tell her she's going to Seattle Pres. Ben puts a collar on Jonathan, who says he feels tingling, but he can't really feel his legs. Ben steps outside and tells Sullivan to tell Beckett they have to get the whole seat out or they risk paralyzing Jonathan.

Ross finds Vic watching the girls through the glass. Vic says Ross blew her mind with that story. She's never felt like Ross felt that day about anything she's done at work. Ross tells her there's a lot going on right now, so it's not the time for mentorship.

Travis and Ben try to keep Jonathan calm as they prepare to get him out. Jonathan says he wanted to be a war correspondent, but he gave that up for his wife and then resented her for it. He's the nicest guy to everyone but his wife. When he heard them talking about possibly having a spinal injury, he thought it would be great because then she'd have to take care of him for the rest of his life. Despite this, he's desperately in love with his wife and he's realizing if he's going to be in the marriage, he needs to be in it. Sullivan calls Ben out and tells him Beckett said no to removing the whole chair. Travis stays with Jonathan and tells him he's already defying the odds.

Ben tries to make his case, but Beckett says they don't have the time. Maya intervenes, saying it's ridiculous. Andy backs her up, saying Ben's a doctor. Beckett tells Andy if she wants to run the show, she can do that. He steps back and lets her take the lead. Andy says they're extricating in the chair.

Andy gives directions as Beckett leans against the truck and eats mints. Theo and Maya work to secure the helicopter. Maya has to step back when the pain prevents her from continuing. They start cutting off the side of the helicopter and then take apart the seat. Once the seat is free, they move the seat and Jonathan onto a gurney.

Jack makes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. He tells Vic he needed the camp. He was doing something he was good at and making a difference. He didn't even mind the girls making fun of him. He didn't grow up with family, but he always kind of figured that's what it was like. He shows Vic the picture Brooke left for him. He says they loved him, but they didn't like him. But Vic says it means they loved him, but they couldn't keep him. Vic asks how he feels about the sister. He's curious and confused. Vic says those are totally normal feelings and she can work with that.

As they go to load Jonathan into the aid car, Maya visibly struggles, so Andy takes her place.

Vic has the girls working with chainsaws when they heard honking outside, then see a man banging on the barn door. Vic has the girls step back, then they open the barn door to find Enzo Lim, who opens the back of his car and says his whole family got struck by lightning.

Jack, Vic, and Ross pull Enzo's wife and two children into the barn and start CPR as he explains that they had just arrived at his mom's and were unloading things for her. Ross calls for aid cars, but they're all out. They need more hands, so Vic calls Santos and O'Hare over to take over doing compressions while Coles and Davila grab med bags. They defibrillate and Santos is able to find a pulse. The other two soon follow.

In the aid car, Ben radios the hospital to prepare them, insisting they need to call more personnel for what's coming. Theo compliments him on being firm about what he needs. He says that's leadership. Meanwhile, Maya's spiraling and no one's doing anything about it. Andy pulled her, but it was too little, too late. Ben's also worried about Maya, but Beckett is what it is. Theo doesn't want to accept that.

Enzo thanks them for saving his family as they're loaded into aid cars. O'Hare starts crying. She was scared. She doesn't thinks he can do this. Vic holds her and Santos reminds her that she did do it. Vic says they all did. They saved lives on day 1. O'Hare can't stop crying. Vic says it's relief crying and she does it all the time. It's a good sign because it means she can push through during the call without breaking down and not let it bottle up and mess with her insides later. This is a good thing.

Travis has a bunch of texts from Eli. He's ignored everything Eli has asked him to do. Travis didn't really know what he was in for. Travis asks Andy if she's still in charge, because he might be able to catch them if they go right there. Andy says he has to ask Beckett, so Travis steels himself to do that.

Ross tells Vic she did really well with the girls. Vic says it felt right and it makes sense, but that's what makes her feel like she's on the right path. Ross says sometimes, the right thing is easy. She asks Vic to run Crisis One. She's good with people and feelings and she's a great first responder because she cares. Diane Lewis has done beautifully, but Crisis One needs a permanent leader and Ross wants Vic to do it. That was the original plan, but that was before it became a citywide thing. Ross says her purpose isn't a big, giant thing she's going to discover somewhere. It's everything she's done and everything she will do. Crisis One is perfect for her.

Travis enters the room. There are only a few people in the room. Dixon is chatting with Captain Dan Greer. He says Travis missed it. Travis tries to talk to the others in the room, saying with him, they'll get a firefighter who gets it. He missed the meeting because he was out on a call. Eli stops him and tells him they're just the clean up crew. The meeting is over. Dixon comments that Travis reflects poorly on FD. Travis tells Greer that none of what's being said about him is true. Greer agrees, which is why it was important for him to come to the meeting. Eli told Travis it was important. Travis knows that and kicks his foot in frustration. Eli stops him, because he's making it looks like he does have anger problems. He needs to pull it together. Travis says he'll do better than that and tells Eli to leak the Dixon story.

Andy goes to Beckett and asks him why he checked out. Beckett says Andy wanted to play captain, so he let her. It's harder than it looks. Andy says she was fine. He says managing the personalities is what makes the job challenging. Maya slams a door behind them and Beckett sends Andy to deal with that.

Maya starts composing an apology text to Carina, but Andy comes in. Maya gets up and starts changing as she says Andy embarrassed her. Andy says she was trying to keep people safe, including Maya herself. Maya thinks Andy was using her to angle for captain. Andy says she's fighting for Maya, not against her. She pulled Maya off the scene because she didn't seem okay. When Maya's spiraling, she goes after her team because that's what her dad taught her to do. But the team isn't her competition. She's supposed to work with them, not against them. But she has to let them help her. Maya just asks if they're done and walks out.

Sullivan finds Ross and asks her what's wrong. He heard the camp went great. Ross agrees, but she's still stuck on their morning conversation. They're never going to be able to come to work together. Sullivan says they'll figure it out. Ross didn't expect being with him to be worse than not being with him. It feels impossible. He says they can quit their jobs and move. He wants more and so does she. And that won't change. She says it's so rare for someone like her to be in a position like hers. And it's precarious. She loves her job and she's great at it. More importantly, people who look like her look up to her and she can't mess this up for them. She doesn't know how if they can make it work. She leaves.

Maya runs on the treadmill in obvious pain. She stumbles, but catches herself and rubs her thigh. She stretches for a moment, then starts running again. She runs until she falls, flipping over on the treadmill and hitting her back on the treadmill and her head on the gym floor. She lies motionless on the floor as the alarm rings.

Everyone rushes to get ready for the call. Andy notices that Maya hasn't come, but Beckett calls for her to go, so she leaves Maya's coat on the floor.

Maya lies, still unmoving, on the gym floor.

Helicopter Crash[]

Station 19 was called out to a helicopter crash. When they arrived, Beckett assigned Wiggins and Kline to spray foam on the leaked fuel, Sullivan and Andy to assess the pilot, Travis and Ben to do medical on the passengers, and everyone else on extrication. The two passengers were Isabel and Jonathan, news reporters. They were able to get access to the cabin and put a collar on Isabel. The pilot, Omar, said he'd tried to land it so he took the brunt of the impact, which left him seriously injured. As they worked to free him, he said he saw his dad. After a few moments, he became unresponsive as he died. Once the door was removed, Isabel was extracted and taken to the hospital. Then they put a collar on Jonathan, who said he couldn't feel his legs. Ben checked and saw he had a rod poking through his leg. He determined they'd need to remove the entire seat in order to get him out without paralyzing him. Beckett refused, but when challenged, turned control of the call over to Andy, who told them to remove the seat. Once the seat was detached, they got Jonathan out onto a gurney and took him to the hospital.

Enzo's Family[]

Enzo Lim came to the station and knocked on the barn door. He opened the back of his car, revealing his wife and two children, all of whom had been truck by lightning. Ross, Jack, and Vic brought them into the station and got them on monitors. The fire camp cadets helped them do CPR until they were able to get a pulse on each of them. Then they were taken to the hospital in aid cars.
