Marsha Smith is a woman whose Christmas tree caught on fire.

History[]

Cat Rescue[]

Her cat, Chairman Meow, got caught in the satellite wires on her roof. She called for help and Pruitt came. He untangled her cat and brought him back down to her. ("Dream a Little Dream of Me")

Tree Fire and Bonding with Jack[]

Marsha's tree caught on fire. While she waited for the fire department to arrive, she tried to put the fire out on her own but was unsuccessful. When Jack and Dean arrived, they quickly put out the fire and she broke down in Jack's arms, repeating that the tree was on fire.

Months later, Jack was still thinking about that call and how Marsha was all alone, except that tree, which burned down. After telling Diane Lewis about Marsha, he went to her apartment to bring her some groceries and some company. She thanked him and invited him in. ("Something About What Happens When We Talk")

While living alone, Marsha bought herself a bird. She didn't know she was scared of birds until she went to clean its cage and it ended up flying around her apartment. ("Save Yourself")

Marsha continued to be close to the firefighters, even bringing them donuts after Pruitt's death. When Jack needed a place for Inara and Marcus to stay after he learned Inara was being beaten by her husband, he took them to Marsha's place, where she welcomed them into her home. ("Dream a Little Dream of Me")

Inara and Marcus continued to stay with Marsha. ("Louder Than a Bomb")

Covid-19[]

During Covid-19, Marcus, Inara, and Marsha isolated at Marsha's place together. Marcus didn't like when they wore the masks because he couldn't read their lips. He also wanted to show Jack his new train set, but Jack couldn't come inside to see it. Marsha expressed that she wasn't sure masks were doing anything, but Jack told her people said the same thing about seat belts when they first came out. ("Nothing Seems the Same")

One day, while Inara was at work, Marsha collapsed, so Marcus texted Jack, who brought the aid car to pick her up. She was struggling to breathe, so they took both her and Marcus to Grey Sloan. She was immediately tested and taken to the COVID unit. Jack and Marcus were also tested immediately and Inara was tested later. Marsha's test came back positive, but the other three tested negative. Jack was upset because Marsha had continuously refused to wear her mask. When Inara got home from work, she was worried that Marsha would die and they'd have to find another place to live. Jack offered to stay in the apartment with them until Marsha was able to come home, to keep them safe from Ted. He ended up sleeping on the couch, while Marcus slept on the floor next to him. ("Don't Look Back in Anger")

After some time in the hospital, Marsha started feeling better. She video called Inara, Jack, and Marcus asking for gossip and Inara and Jack were surprised to learn that Marcus already knew the two of them had hooked up and both he and Marsha were happy about it. Later, when Jack came home and asked Inara officially to be his girlfriend, Marcus and Marsha both celebrated. ("Learning to Fly")

Marsha's condition continued to improve until she was finally told she'd be able to go home the next day. Jack took the day off and he, Marcus, and Inara planned to come to the hospital to pick her up. However, as they were getting ready to leave, Jack got a call from Emmett telling them not to come as Marsha had taken a turn and they expected her to need to go on a ventilator later that day. Jack hadn't gotten a call as her son was her emergency contact. They were all heartbroken that they wouldn't be able to bring her home, so Maya brought the ladder truck to the hospital and Jack climbed up with Marcus and they held a sign outside Marsha's hospital window telling her to get better soon so Marcus could beat her at Parcheesi. ("Make No Mistake, He's Mine")

With Marsha on a ventilator, her son stepped in and used his power of attorney to have them remove it. When the time came, Jack, Inara, and Marcus did a video call with the hospital. Her son was also on the call, but left as soon as the process was initiated. Levi explained to them that there would probably be shallowing of her breathing and it could take minutes or hours. They stayed on the call and talked to her as she breathed. Hours later, while Jack was sharing a memory of Marsha getting a pet bird to talk to, they were surprised to hear Marsha laughing. She had woken up and was breathing well enough on her own. All the firefighters celebrated along with Inara, Jack, and Marcus. ("Save Yourself")

Marsha recovered enough to come home, so Inara and Jack set her up on the couch with everything she needed before they went off to work. ("Here It Comes Again")

As her recovery continued, Marsha offered to take Marcus to the park to work on an egg-drop project for school, allowing Jack and Inara their first real time alone together as a couple. ("Comfortably Numb")

Inara and Marcus's Move[]

After some time, Inara decided she and Marcus were going to move to California to live with her sister. Marsha encouraged Jack to talk to Inara about it and go with them, saying she was used to living alone and would love to visit them in California. ("Forever and Ever, Amen")

Christmas[]

About a week before Christmas, Marsha took Jack to a Christmas tree farm. He was drunk, but she had taken away his whiskey so he could sober up before he had to work. She later sent cookies to the station for the team. ("All I Want for Christmas is You")

Worry About Jack[]

Jack got a text from Marsha while he was at the hardware store, asking if he was okay and why he wasn't texting her back. He tried to compose a reply, but deleted both attempts. ("Dancing With Our Hands Tied")

Election Day[]

On Election Day, Marsha came down to the station to drop off her ballot. She immediately recognized that Jack was anxious, which he said was because he'd taken half a shift off to meet one of his new siblings, as Brooke had requested. Marsha told him to give them a chance to show them they could be part of the family he already had. ("All These Things That I've Done")

Jack's Brain Injury[]

When Jack was injured at the Firefighters Ball, Marsha was upset that they hadn't called her and raced to the hospital, where she waited by Jack's bedside until he woke up. While he was out, she talked to Ben about how Jack was her only family. ("This Woman's Work")

Jack was upset to learn he wouldn't be able to be a firefighter anymore with his brain injury. The station planned a dinner for him, but Jack tried to skip the dinner. Marsha helped the team find Jack and bring him to the station for the dinner. ("Good Grief")

Relationships[]

Familial[]

She is estranged from her son, likely due to her alcoholism.

She, Inara, and Marcus consider themselves each other's family. ("Make No Mistake, He's Mine")
