Out of Control is the fifth episode and winter finale of the fourth season and the 48th overall episode of Station 19.

Short Summary[]

Andy and Sullivan find a way to stay connected. Ben confronts a tough loss, and Jack and Inara grow closer. Meanwhile, while off duty, the crew jumps into action to help a mother in distress, but their heroic efforts spark conflict with police officers who are less than eager to offer support.

Full Summary[]

The firefighters from station 19 return after a three-alarm fire. Ben gets a call from Bailey and goes to take it. The firefighters brag about their efficiency, especially compared to station 23. As they brag, Maya blows her whistle and tells them their efficiency and cohesion isn't where it needs to be, so they're going to do drills for three hours. After a moment, Andy realizes she's joking. She says they can't go to the bar like they usually do, so she invites them to her and Carina's place to celebrate their win.

Maya sees Ben sitting on the edge of the firetruck as she walks toward her office. She asks him if he's okay and he says his mother-in-law died of COVID after he dropped her off at the hospital yesterday. He needs to go home because Bailey wants him to tell the kids. Maya tells him to go. He says he has to do some things first but she tells him it's covered and just to go.

Andy asks the others if they're going to come over. Vic says she just has to stop by her parents' restaurant first. Jack says he'll be there, but later, because he has to help Marcus with his virtual classes first. The others tease him about his relationship with Inara, which he continues to insist is platonic.

Ben comes home to hear Rosalind celebrating her third straight win against Tuck. Tuck calls for a re-match, which she says will make it four wins in a row for her. They notice Ben and are surprised to see him. They try to get him to play, but he has them turn the game off. They realize something is wrong.

Sullivan and Richard are walking by a park together and drinking coffee. Sullivan says the separation is killing him, but Amelia said it was necessary. Richard corrects that it was just a suggestion based on her own experience. Then he asks if Andy makes him crave drugs or alcohol. He says she doesn't. So he could be with his wife.

Maya asks Andy if Sullivan is coming and Andy realizes that Maya has an opinion about it. Maya reminds her they separated for a reason. Andy says Maya lives with her girlfriend for a few weeks and is suddenly a relationship expert. Maya then backs off. She realizes they have no snacks and sends Andy to get some.

Vic exits her parents' restaurant and sees Theo pull up in a firetruck. He's surprised to see her there, but she tells him it's her parents' restaurant. He wasn't at the fire earlier because his shift just started. But D-shift said they kicked 19's asses, which Vic says is a lie. They flirt for a few moments, then Theo asks her out. She says she's not really dating right now because of the pandemic. He then says he's going to handle rejection gracefully.

Dean and Ben discuss his confronting his father about being gay. Travis won the Youth Bible Trivia three years in a row, so he has a Bible verse for every situation and used one. Dean wishes he could say to his parents what needs to be said. Maya feels the same way. Travis notices the pitiful snacks, but Maya tells him Andy went to get more. Dean notices the cheese on the island and asks about them. Maya says not to touch them or Carina will kill her and then they really will be doing drills. She opens the soda she just retrieved from the fridge and it sprays all over her. She realizes Dean shook the bottle and calls him out for being juvenile. As Vic comes in, she goes to change her shirt. Vic comments on the teddy bear Dean is holding and asks what its name is. He gives it to Vic and Travis, claiming it's a housewarming present. Vic realizes it's from his parents for Pru and tells him to give it to her. Dean says it's their way of trying to get back into his life. Their conversation is interrupted when they hear a woman calling for help. They all race out the door. Down on the street, they find Joyce Williams, who is pointing to a house and saying the man inside took her daughter.

Joyce tells them she knocked on the door but the man slammed it in her face, so she needs backup. She tells Vic her daughter is Jada. Dean says they want to help, but ask her what happened. Vic tells her they're firefighters and can help if she tells them what's going on. She informs them that her daughter and her daughter's friend, Shanice, were having a sleepover. In the morning, Joyce woke up to find them gone. Joyce tracked her fitness watch to the house. Her phone was traced down by the water, but then it went dead. She called the police. They said they'd send a car to her house, but they never showed up, so she went to the station to file a report, but they said it could take days to get a warrant. Three Black girls have gone missing from her neighborhood in the last year and the police have done nothing. They ask about Shanice's mom, but Joyce hasn't been able to reach her. They ask if there's any chance Jada's with Shanice's mom. They encourage her to contact Shanice's mom again and get all their friends to check social media for any idea where they might be. Dean says he'll knock down the door himself if it comes to it. Joyce starts making calls.

Andy dances around the station as she collects snacks. Sullivan spots her and starts dancing with her. The dancing leads to kissing, even as she tries to resist.

Travis leaves to go check his car for masks as they wait for Joyce to finish her calls. Dean and Vic start talking about Pru. He is worried that his daughter doesn't have a village. Vic says he has all of 19. His sister is still trying to get him back with his parents, which is making him made, which is pushing her away. Vic says if he wants to build a village for Pru, he needs to start inviting other people to live in it, including his parents and sister. Dean looks at Joyce and decides he can't keep waiting. Vic stops him, saying they can't just accuse someone of kidnapping without making a few phone calls first.

Inara and Jack are washing dishes. Marcus is napping after eating lunch. Marsha is doing well at the hospital, which is good news. Inara tells him he doesn't have to sleep on the couch, but he would feel weird sleeping in Marsha's bed. Inara offers up her bed, saying she can sleep on the couch. He tells her she works long hours, too. But it does get cold sleeping on the couch. Inara says her room is warm. Then she reaches up and kisses Jack. He leans in and kisses her back.

Tuck asks where his mom is. Ben says she felt it was important to keep working. Tuck is angry and says his grandma shouldn't be dead and shouldn't have died like that. Ben knows and Tuck is angry that his mother didn't tell him herself. Tuck tells Ben he's not Ben's son as he storms off to his room.

Travis found a medical bag in his trunk that had masks and hands them out. Joyce has had no luck finding out anything about the girls. Dean goes to knock on the door, followed by Joyce. He knocks until Robert Corson opens the door, upset. Joyce accuses him of kidnapping her daughter, but he says she's wrong. Vic asks to look around, but he refuses.

Rosalind tells Ben that Tuck won't even talk to Joey, let alone her. It hurt to her Tuck say that Ben's not his dad. Rosalind reminds him of the cruel things he said to his father and sister when his mother passed. Instead of taking it personally, his dad made him spaghetti. He put aside his big pain so his kid could have his, because that's what dads do. Ben goes to make spaghetti.

Andy and Sullivan have finished having sex. Andy asks him about his sponsor. He says his sponsor said there's no reason for them not to be together if she doesn't make him crave drugs. They start kissing again.

Inara and Jack have also had sex. Inara admits that she doesn't usually do that with her son in the next room. He says they were quiet and Inara notes that her son is also deaf. Inara remembers that he was supposed to go to a party and suggests that he go. He starts to talk about them, but she tells him she's not ready to let go of the feeling, so they should wait to talk. He gets up and dresses to leave.

Maya exits her bedroom to find that everyone has disappeared. She worries it's another prank until she hears yelling. She grabs her keys and leaves.

Outside, Shanice's mom, Sharon is angry with Joyce and blames her for their daughters being kidnapped. Travis, Dean, and Vic try to make peace between them. Maya and Jack then arrive. Maya reminds the others that they're not on duty when they explain the situation. Dean then pretends to smell a gas leak and heads for the door. Jack tries to stop him, but Dean reminds him of when they bent the rules to get Inara and Marcus away from Ted. Maya wants them to call the cops instead of barging in. Joyce asks them to think about what that guy might be doing to their daughters while they wait outside.

Ben adds garlic to the spaghetti sauce. The food needs to be good. Rosalind provides insight into how Tuck is feeling, how kids these days know what the mismanagement of the world has cost them. The Tuck she knows doesn't want to carry his grief alone like Ben did. Ben shut everyone out and made everyone else carry their own grief as well. Rosalind says Tuck needs to talk about his feelings and workshop them, like she did.

Vic sees Dean struggling. He isn't sure how they aren't throwing grenades into the house. Jack warns him that he's drawing attention. Dean talks about all the missing Black girls and what it's like to raise a Black girl. Vic herself grew up a Black girl. Vic still says they need to stay calm and gather all the information. They hear sirens and Maya notes the incoming cop cars. Joyce immediately starts talking to the cops. Maya also introducers herself to officers Shneider and Wicklund, but they're there because Bob called the police, not because of the girls. Shneider immediately refuses to do anything to help Joyce. Dean again says he smells gas and the others agree that they smell it as well. Maya sends Jack to check it out. Jack goes to the door and knocks again, but Bob refuses to let them in to check. Wicklund tells Joyce she can file a missing persons report with him, but she just begs them to do their jobs. They hear glass shattering and discover flames coming from a basement window. Maya says it's their scene now and calls to her team.

Maya gives orders to her team. The officers pulls Sharon and Joyce back from the house and tell them to calm down. Bob then comes out of the house coughing. Andy and Sullivan arrive and Dean updates them on the situation. Jack tells them B-shift is on a call and 88 is seven minutes away. That's too far, so Dean decides to go in without waiting for them. Sullivan follows him.

Ben has finished cooking. Joey comes out to the kitchen and shakes his head. Joey and Ben then talk about losing people. Tuck's never lost anyone before. But Joey has. Ben asks about his foster siblings. They're all in homes right now, but it hurts to be away from them. Ben offers to have a barbecue for all of them when the pandemic is over. Tuck emerges from his room, saying he smelled spaghetti. Tuck apologizes for what he said, but Ben says it's okay. Ben then makes him up a bowl.

Sullivan and Dean make their way down to the basement. They hear Jada and Shanice calling out. They take the garden hose that Travis has fed in through the window and start spraying it at the fire.

Travis tells the others that the girls are inside. Bob claims that they're lying. Several onlookers are angry that the police aren't doing more to help. Vic goes to Bob and says anyone trapped in that house will die and then she'll move heaven and earth to get him charged with murder. Wicklund then tries to get Bob to tell them where the girls are because kidnapping is a much lesser charge than murder. Bob refuses.

Dean spots fingers through an air vent and they find a locked door. They tell the girls to get back so they can kick the door in. The girls stop responding to their calls.

Tuck knows there won't be a funeral for his grandmother. He knows things didn't have to be this bad. Doctors are working hard to help people and there are a lot of people not listening to their directions. Tuck asks Ben how he and Bailey deal with seeing people die so often. Ben says faith. He sees people on the worst days of their lives.

Sullivan and Dean kick in the door and find the two girls.

Ben continues to talk about firefighting. Sometimes they can only do damage control.

Sullivan and Dean carry the girls out.

Ben says sometimes they're the answer to people's prayers.

Sullivan and Dean emerge from the house with the girls. They lay them on the ground.

Ben says when that happens, they can more than save a life. They can restore someone's faith and that strengthens his.

As station 88 arrives with backup, they grab supplies and tend to the girls, who both start breathing again. Bob coughs as he's arrested.

Ben says showing up is how they'll get through this.

Vic loads Shanice into an aid car, saying she'll need treatment for smoke inhalation, but nothing seems broken. Shanice apologizes to her mother. They met an "influencer" on Instagram who offered to teach them how to make a lot of money. When they went to meet her, she wasn't there and then a man pulled them into a van. Shanice then revealed that they started the fire. They heard voices and then the voices went away, so Jada had the idea to start a fire to draw attention to themselves. Vic notices Schneider taking notes and reminds him that Shanice is a victim, not a suspect. He tells her to let him do his job.

Andy checks on Sullivan, who says he's fine. She sees a burn on his arm, but he says he'll take care of it once the fire is out.

Wicklund asks Jada if there was any penetration. Joyce and Maya both call him out on how he's asking questions. Maya then takes over questioning and asks Jada if the man hurt them or touched them. She says after he locked them in the room, he never spoke to them. Wicklund goes to ask more questions, but Joyce snaps at him. Shneider tells her her daughter just started a fire. Maya tries to stop them and Wicklund even asks Schneider if they can wait. Bob then yells that the girls broke into his house and started a fire, so he wants them arrested. Dean says she was kidnapped, but Schneider says girls like that lie all the time. Joyce lunges at him, but Maya grabs her by the waist before she can make contact. Despite this, he arrests her for assaulting a police officer. They wrestle her down onto the trunk of a cop car. Jada sees what's happening and calls out to her mother as she's put in the aid car. Dean then runs over to them, but before he can get to them, another cop tackles him to the ground and several cops pin him to the ground and arrest him even as Maya objects. Vic runs toward them but backs off with her hands up when a cop appears in front of her. Jack and Travis try to push forward, but two cops hold them back. Andy approaches and verbally objects to the arrest, but another cop shoves her to the ground. Sullivan sees this and shoves the cop. Several cops then pull out their guns and arrest Sullivan at gunpoint. Maya pleads with the officers, saying this is her team. Schneider asks if she's coming with them, too, and she asks on what charges. Schneider says obstruction of justice and breaking and entering. The three of them are loaded into cop cars and driven away as the rest of the team watches, unable to do anything.

Kidnapping/House Fire[]

While at Maya and Carina's for a post-call celebration, Travis, Dean, and Vic raced to help when the heard Joyce Williams yelling for help. When they got to her, she pointed to a house and told them a man inside had taken her daughter. She explained that her daughter, Jada, had had a sleepover with her friend Shanice and they weren't in the house when she woke up. She didn't answer her phone, so Joyce tracked her fitness watch to the house she was outside of. Her phone was tracked down by the water, but the signal later died, making her think someone had thrown it into the water after taking her. Vic then suggested calling all their other friends and asking them to check social media for information about where they might have gone. After being unable to find anything on social media, they finally went to the door and knocked, but Bob, the man in the house, denied everything and said to stay away from his door. Dean decided to pretend he smelled gas in order to get access, but Maya stopped him and Maya called the police. Police arrived soon afterward, responding not to Maya's call, but to Bob's, complaining about the people outside his house. When they refused to do anything, Dean again asked if anyone smelled gas. All the firefighters agreed that they smelled it. They went to Bob's door, but he refused them entry. Then they heard glass breaking and went to the side of the house, where they saw smoke coming out of a basement window. They called for backup and used a garden hose to start dousing the flames. The nearest station was 7 minutes away, so Dean decided he'd go in without waiting for backup or gear. Sullivan decided to follow him. They went down to the basement, where they could hear Jada and Shanice, but couldn't find them. They pulled the hose Travis fed through the window and started spraying the flames as they searched for the girls. They followed the sound of the girls to a locked door. They kicked the door in and pulled both girls out of the house. Once they were out, both girls were able to breathe again and were taken to the hospital.

When one of the responding officers proposed that the girls were lying and had trespassed, Joyce lunged at him, but Maya pulled her back before she could make contact. Despite this, the officer arrested her for assaulting a police officer. Witnessing the arrest, Dean tried to stop it, but was tackled by another officer and arrested. Andy protested and another officer shoved her to the ground, so Sullivan shoved him and was also arrested after being held at gunpoint by several officers.
