Full Summary[]
The team dances as they cook together. Andy checks her phone to see Eli hasn't replied. Travis does the same. Andy notices this and asks if he's seeing someone. He denies it, but she knows he's lying. Andy announces they have 15 minutes left. Vic thanks Andy for planning this dinner for Theo. She knows he's been rough, but she believes he's doing his best. It'll mean a lot to him. Kline bumps Maya, who drops the piece of bread she's buttering. As she picks it up, the alarm goes off. They all rush out. Jack turns off the burners as he goes, but slips on the butter before he can get the last one, falling and hitting his head. He gets up and runs out, leaving a pot on the stove with a burner on under it.
Theo reminds Vic she's on desk. She tells them to have fun as they all run out.
Vic does several things to pass the time. Upstairs, the pot continues to boil and eventually catches fire. The alarm goes off, alerting Vic that the sprinklers have been activated. She runs upstairs and uses a fire extinguisher to put out the flames, ruining the dinner.
As they return to the station, Theo thinks Andy was second-guessing him on the call and tells her it needs to stop. Travis tells Andy Theo's under a lot of pressure. Andy wishes they weren't having the dinner.
Upstairs, they find the ruined dinner. Vic says she forgot the food was out. Someone left a burner on. Theo is angry. He asks if this is some kind of prank. He thinks Andy did it to make him look bad. The rest of them say it was an accident. He orders them to clean it up and then they'll run drills because they need it. Vic follows him out, promising to talk to him.
In the captain's office, Theo tells Vic he doesn't want to talk about it. She says it's a lot. Theo's upset that he has to file a report about the fire and says it makes him look like an idiot. He thinks Andy believes it's her house and no one else can run it, but Vic says that's not true. He asks if she really forgot the food was out. She says yes and apologizes. She also says he won't be very popular if he doesn't let people eat. He says they can eat, but they'll be running drills next shift.
Maya pulls the envelope out of her locker and looks at it. She walks into the bunk room, looks at the pictures, then calls the fire union. She leaves a message asking for someone to call her back to discuss something. There's a knock on the door. It's Carina, who's there for their first date. Maya plays into the first date, pretending not to remember Carina's name. Maya puts the pictures back and then goes to give Carina a tour.
Jack and Andy looks at what they have and decide to make risotto. Vic comes in and says Theo's going to let them eat, but they're running drills next shift. Vic says he'll come around. Andy says it's not just that. Jack stumbles and spills some broth on himself. He goes to change while Andy cleans up the spill. Andy tells Vic that she told Eli she couldn't see him again, then changed her mind, so she sent him a text, but he hasn't replied. Maya leads Carina in and introduces her to Vic and Andy. Vic pretends to be a doctor. Andy thanks Carina for the cannoli she's brought, saying they've changed plans for dinner, but they'll go great. Carina steps away to take a call. Maya tells Andy they're takings things slow and rebuilding their foundation. Andy says it's weird, but she likes it. Carina comes back and asks who's on aid car. It's Maya and Ben, so she has Maya come with her.
On their way to the scene, Ben shows Maya the flyer doxxing Bailey. He asks Carina if she's seen it and she says yes because they're all over the hospital. He wants her help convincing Bailey to do something. Carina says they won't be closing the clinic. He doesn't want them to, but he wants more security. Carina knows he's worried. Maya says he's not the only one. Carina knows they're both worried. Ben says they could hire some armed guards. The fake clinic had them. Carina says that didn't make her feel safer and the people they're serving need to feel safe. Ben says his family has been doxxed. He's afraid someone will show up. Carina says they'll all afraid, but the answer isn't more guns.
Carina, Maya, and Ben arrive at the university, where Devon leads them down a hall, saying he and Pam were working together when she got up to go for a walk. When she didn't come back, he went looking for her and found her on the floor, with her arm trapped in a vending machine. Pam thanks Carina for coming as they put down their things and start assessing the situation.
Theo gives directions as they clean the equipment. Travis realizes Theo's not in a good place. Sullivan says he heard Travis is up in the polls. Travis is surprised and says sometimes you just need an Eli to believe in you. Sullivan says sometimes even when you're prepared and qualified, you still don't get the job you deserve. Travis gets a text from Eli saying he's coming to the station because they have something to discuss.
Pam explains that she's been uncomfortable all day and she remembered Carina telling her that moving around could help when they went out for drinks. So she took a walk. Ben says the vending machine company is estimating it'll take a few hour to get someone with a key. Pam says she saw the baby donuts trapped in the vending machine and decided she wanted them. She shook the machine and they dropped a little and she thought she could reach them, so she put her arm in, but got stuck. Carina asks how far apart her contractions are and Devon says five minutes. He's been timing them. Pam recognizes Ben from the clinic. Carina tells Pam she's in labor, but they'll get her out and to the hospital as quickly as possible. That's good because her arm is starting to hurt. The contractions are helping distract her from the pain. Maya wants to try lubrication to free her arm. Carina says her water is already broken, so they need to get her out ASAP.
Jack and Andy work on their new dinner. She says if she knew Theo would be like this, she would have taken the job herself. She asks Jack not to tell anyone else Ross offered it to her. She didn't want to be a babysitter. She thought Ross would give it to Sullivan and Jack asks why she didn't. He would have made more sense. Andy doesn't know.
Vic tells a couple their fire alarm is broken. She offers to get them another. Ross comes in looking for Theo. Vic sends her into the office, then goes to get another alarm for the couple to take. Travis comes to Vic and is awkward. He admits he's worried about the message from Eli. He says they slept together after the town hall. He goes to go back upstairs so it doesn't look like he was waiting for Eli.
Ben and Maya work on Pam's arm as Carina checks on her labor. Pam's still able to move her fingers, but her arm is going numb. Carina pulls Maya and Ben to the side and tells them the baby's on the way. She asks how much longer. Ben's worried about the blood flow because she's going numb. Carina says they have to prepare for the possibility they'll have to deliver there. Ben goes to get the pry bar. Once he's gone, Maya asks Carina about her and Pam getting drinks. Carina says Pam's a friend, but Maya knows all Carina's friends. Pam has another contraction and they go back to her.
Ross finds Sullivan. She got a call from Chief Dearborn in Spokane asking about one of her lieutenants who applied for battalion chief. She asks if he's leaving 19.
Sullivan admits he applied for the job in Spokane because there isn't room for him to advance in Seattle. Ross asks if he was going to tell her. He says he assumed they weren't speaking about work stuff anymore since she didn't tell him she was making Ruiz captain. Jack comes in, saying dinner is almost ready. He invites Ross to join them.
Jack goes to go back upstairs, but falls on the steps. Vic helps him up and asks what's going on with him. He tells her what he saw with Sullivan and Ross. He wonders if they're planning another round of closures. Vic asks why she'd be talking to Sullivan about that. Kyle, Tim, Will, and Mac come in. Will is in a lot of pain and vomits on the station floor. Jack leads him and his friends to the barn and leaves Vic to clean up.
Maya pulls on Pam's arm, but it's not budging. She asks how Pam's arm feels and Pam says she can't really feel it anymore. Ben comes back with equipment and his and Maya's turnouts. It took him a long time because a guard stopped him at the door. This college has tighter security than the clinic, so he had to talk his way back in. While they put on their jackets, Maya asks Ben about Pam, whom he says came to the clinic to see Carina. Carina says the baby's arm is in the birth canal. The baby must have changed positions. She needs to check to make sure the baby's in a good position or they'll have to change it to avoid him getting trapped.
Jack and Vic question Will about what he's been eating. His friends deny any alcohol or drug use. It could be appendicitis, so Vic presses on his abdomen, but that doesn't cause more pain. Jack asks the friends what's going on. They deny it again. Tim and Mac then run over to the bucket and vomit themselves. Vic asks them what they took.
Eli comes into the beanery with Robel Osman. Osman says the polling says they're splitting the progressive vote, leaving room for Dixon to take the election. If Travis can give him some assurances, he'll drop out and endorse Travis. Eli congratulates Travis, saying he'll be the next mayor of Seattle.
Jack tells the kids if they want to get better, they have to come clean. The last kid, Kyle, finally vomits. Vic tells them to get it all out because it's going to come out anyway. Vic asks them again what they took. When they say nothing, Vic says they'll get them all into ambulances and call their parents. Tim begs Kyle to tell them. Kyle still doesn't want to, but finally shows Vic the packet from the world's hottest chips. They ate one each covered in hot cause. It was a challenge to eat one and then wait an hour without any food or water. Will only made it about eleven minutes. Kyle made it almost the whole hour. Tim sarcastically congratulates him. He's upset that Kyle pushed them to do this. Jack starts to feel bad himself. Vic grabs him and calls for Theo.
Osman explains his conditions.
Jack assures Vic he's okay. She goes to get him some water. Vic sees Andy watching Eli and Travis and says maybe Eli isn't right for her after all. Andy is confused. She shows Vic the risotto, which Vic doesn't like.
Maya and Ben remove the front of the vending machine, but it's not enough. They need an angle grinder. Ben goes to call the station to get one. Carina tells Pam the baby's not in a good position, but he pulled his arm back, so she can apply pressure to her abdomen to move him into a better position. It'll be painful. Pam doesn't think she can do it, but Carina assures her she can. She knows Pam is strong and she wants the baby. She can do it because she has to. Pam asks Devon to hold her hand as Carina starts to work.
Theo tells the teens to get some bread in their stomachs and stay away from the hard stuff as they leave. He takes a call from Ben and says they'll get it over right away. He needs someone to take an angle grinder out to Ben and Maya. Sullivan offers to go. Theo says to take Cutler, but Ross offers to go instead so everyone else can eat dinner.
Osman is still going over his conditions. Travis excuses himself for a moment.
Travis goes to the fridge and gets some water. Vic asks him if it's about the Eli thing. Travis says he's not really focused on that. He's about to be handed to the keys to Seattle for a job he's not qualified to do. He's in over his head. Vic reminds him why he got into the race. She tells him not to let other people's agendas to become his. He only needs to listen to his own voice. Eli comes out and pulls Travis back into the room. Before they can go, Jack collapses to the floor.
Vic, Andy, and Travis examine Jack. Theo brings in a gurney. Jack finally admits to hitting his head before they went on their earlier call. He also admits that the fire was his fault. Theo's got an aid car coming and will go to the hospital with him. Andy offers to go instead, but Theo says it's his team, so he'll go. Osman asks if Travis can finish the conversation now that that's okay. He and Eli go back into the day room. Travis asks Vic and Andy if he's nuts to do this. Vic says he's a rare person who got into politics for the right reason, like Osman. Travis asks what he should say.
Ross asks Sullivan if he thought she wouldn't find out. He says he was dealing with getting passed over for captain. Ross asks if he doesn't understand why. Sullivan thought they were keeping things quiet so it wouldn't affect their careers, but that only seems to apply to hers because his is on hold. Ross says it wasn't that long ago he said he would wait 30 years. He barely made it 30 days. He asks if she would wait for him. Ross knows it isn't fair, but relationships are like that sometimes. She thought he was okay with it being her time. They arrive at the college.
Carina has the baby in position. Maya and Ben pull snacks out of the machine. Devon puts a pack of the donuts in Pam's purse. Carina needs Pam elevated, so she asks Devon to get on all fours and get under her. Maya thinks that might be workplace harassment, so she goes to do it instead. Devon says he would have done it, but jokes he would have sued. Ross and Sullivan arrive. Carina has Ross brace Pam's leg as Sullivan and Ben get to work on the machine.
Travis says he can't guarantee Osman what he's asking for. Instead, he'd like Osman to make him some guarantees. He offers to concede instead. Osman's the better candidate. He's dedicated his life to understanding things Travis is just learning about. Eli tries to stop Travis, but Travis just states his conditions, including giving Eli a job. If he agrees, Travis will endorse him and campaign for him. Osman agrees and they shake on it. Osman leaves and says he'll be in touch. Travis apologizes to Eli. Eli leaves to go beg the next mayor of Seattle for a job. Travis asks if Eli will want to date him after this. Andy is surprised to hear that they slept together. Andy excuses herself to get some air. Vic explains that Andy and Eli were dating. Travis is horrified.
Pam labors as Ben and Sullivan cut apart the machine. As Pam's baby is born, they get her arm free and wrap it around her baby.
Andy looks out over the barn. A sanitation worker runs in and says his garbage truck is on fire.
The firefighter struggle with the smell as they work to put out the garbage fire. Vic says it's worse than the vomit of four teenage boys. Travis asks if he's a bad person for sleeping with someone his friend was into. Vic says he didn't know. Travis asks about crushing Eli's dreams. Vic says sometimes doing the right things feels like doing the wrong thing. Andy realizes they can't get the fire out without dumping the garbage. They dump it on the ground and get water on it.
Ross asks Sullivan if this is a breakup. He says no. It's a way for them to be together. She says he'll be on the other side of the state, so they'll never see each other. He says they barely see each other now. At least if he transfers, they'll be able to be together in public. She asks why he can't wait a year for a promotion. He asks if she'll step down in a year. He knows she won't. He's trying to find a way to be together. She says what he's doing is quitting. He asks her what she wants. She wants him to live in the same city as her because she loves him. She doesn't want to hurt him. She wants to marry him and be with him forever, but she can't. She wants him to understand that it hurts her, too. He says he does.
Theo comes back and says Jack will be fine. They're keeping him for observation and hydrating him. He comments on the garbage smell. Andy says the fire is almost contained. It's not he only dumpster fire today. She's angry he accused her of trying to sabotage him. Theo says he knows she thinks it's her house. She tells him she was offered the job and turned it down. The dinner that got ruined was a dinner she was throwing to unite the team behind him. He should be thanking her. She walks away. Theo tells Travis he's screwing things up. Travis says he's figuring it out. He's a great firefighter and Travis is proud to have him as captain. Theo reminds him he's leaving, but Travis says he dropped out to he race because he knows he's meant to be a firefighter. They need to get back to that and everything else will be fine.
Ben, Maya, and Carina clean and re-stock the aid car. Ben admits he was wrong about the armed guard at the clinic. Carina says everything they do has risks. Pam just wanted some donuts and she ended up getting stuck. They're doing everything they can and Ben just has to let it go. Ben doesn't know if he can let it go, but he can keep his mouth shut. Maya wishes him luck and he says he'll try. Ben walks away and Maya says Carina was amazing. She asks about Pam. Carina says Pam's a new friend. They got drinks together once. Carina's been lonely. It was nice to have someone to talk to. That's all it was. Maya tells Carina about the pictures. Dixon gave them to her so she could use them to get Ross removed and replaced with someone who would endorse him for mayor. And in exchange, he promised her her job back. Maya wants to be captain again, but not like that. Maya knows this isn't first-date conversation, but Carina's her conscience. Carina says that's why you trust your partner, because they mirror back the best parts of you. May leans in and kisses Carina. She asks if they can go out again. Carina says maybe and asks Maya to call her.
Travis tells Andy it just happened. After the debate, they were all wound up. He didn't even know Andy liked Eli. Andy didn't know herself until recently. They kissed once and she told him she wasn't interested, so no one did anything wrong. Travis says he would never. Andy knows. She offers him some food, but he's not interested. She takes a bite herself and tells her they're missing out. Maya comes to Andy and shows her the pictures. She has some ideas of what to do with them, but thinks Andy's ideas will be better than hers. Maya thinks they need to go to the chief. Andy is angry because she knew they were together and Sullivan lied to her face about it. He put the whole house at risk. Maya tries to calm her down. Andy says to give her a minute.

Pam Williams[]
Carina got a call that Pam was stuck in a vending machine while in labor, so she went with Maya and Ben to Pam's workplace, where they worked to free her while Carina monitored her labor. The vending machine company estimated that it would take hours to get someone with a key there, so they tried lubrication to slide her arm out, but it failed and her arm started to go numb. Carina assessed that she was close to giving birth, adding urgency to the situation. Carina felt an arm in the birth canal, meaning the baby had changed positions. She said they needed to change his position or he could get trapped. Ben and Maya then started taking the machine apart in the hopes of freeing her, but found it very difficult to break into. They called the station to get an angle grinder. Carina then said the baby had pulled his arm back, so she could press on Pam's abdomen to change his position. This was successful and then Maya positioned herself under Pam to get a better angle for her to give birth while Ben cut the vending machine and freed her.
Jack Gibson[]
Jack slipped on some butter and fell in the beanery, hitting his head. He later slipped on the stairs and started repeating himself. Despite this, he insisted he was fine until he collapsed. Theo then took him to the hospital.
Teenagers[]
A group of four teens came into the station and said one of them, Will, wasn't feeling well. Will then vomited on the station floor. Vic and Jack started an IV and asked him what he'd ingested. He and his friends denied anything, but were acting odd. After the rest of them vomited, they admitted to eating the world's hottest chips with hot sauce on them for a challenge. Once the kids were done vomiting and feeling better, they sent them home and told them to eat some bread.
