Heat Wave

The Heat Wave is a heat wave that spread through Seattle, affecting its citizens.

Timeline[]

As a heat wave spread through Seattle, the firefighters of station 19 prepared to host a push-in for their new engine. Ari Lan from department HR approached Sullivan about capitalizing on the "Fire Zaddy" buzz to generate good PR for the department. Due to the heat wave, station 19 got temporary approval to act as a medical facility to take some of the burden off the hospital, with Carina coming to the station to help out. Station 23 came over as well to help with the push-in. Maya gave a speech at Beckett's behest, to show everyone that they have girls at the station, and then they prepared to push the engine into the station with the help of the community. As soon as the first people touched it, they pulled back because their hands were burned. Everyone was told to move back and those who were burned were treated. Ben invited everyone else to come inside to cool off.

Throughout the day, Carina and the firefighters continued providing water and treating people with heat-related injuries and sickness. The most serious of these was Davey, who had heat stroke after his father forced him to continue practicing football drills outdoors to despite the rising temperature. His father believed he just had heat exhaustion and tried to offer Davey some water, but Carina knocked it out of his hands. She had examined Davey and said he had heat stroke, not just heat exhaustion, meaning he could choke on water if he tried to drink it. She started using ice packs to cool his body and had Maya and Dean get more ice. They moved him into an ice bath in the barn, where Carina explained that they were trying to lower his temp while they waited for the aid car to arrive to take him to the hospital. When the aid car arrived and Davey was loaded, she also informed his father that she'd be calling Child Protective Services because what he had done was abusive.

Later, stations 19 and 23 were called out to the site of a car accident. The road had cracked due to the extreme temperatures, causing a three-car pileup. They were able to free all the trapped passengers and get them to the hospital.

At the end of the day, they used water to cool off the engine and all the people and then pushed the truck in. ("Too Darn Hot")

Meanwhile, at the hospital, the doctors were facing the same heat wave. They treated Chet, who had burned his butt while attempting to cook an egg on the sidewalk while naked.

A kidney became available for Rashida Flowers, but before she could have her surgery, the HVAC system at the hospital went out, raising the temperature and forcing them to cancel surgeries that were not already in process, as the HVAC also controlled air filtration, increasing the risk of infection for patients with open cavities. In order to avoid the kidney going to another patient, Owen had Ben bring the PRT to the hospital, where they set it up in the parking lot to act as an OR for Rashida's surgery.

Since Addison Forbes Montgomery was already operating on her patient Tovah Freedman, she decided to continue, but had Meredith Grey come in to assist her so the surgery would be completed more quickly.

At the end of the day, the HVAC technicians arrived and were able to fix the problem. Teddy, as the hospital's ambassador of fun, set up a snow cone machine in the morgue, the coolest place in the hospital, for the doctors to enjoy. ("Hotter Than Hell")
