Several years ago, someone welcomed me to the game. They said how well I played, that was up to me. The competition was tough. The mentors were even tougher. I pushed myself to the breaking point. And I didn't crack under pressure, even though, let's be honest, I probably should have. I've played the game pretty damn well. Or so I thought I did. You try just as hard. You do the same things you've done for years, even better than you used to. But what if it still doesn't feel like a win anymore? Does that mean you've stopped playing? No. It means it's time to change the game.

Here Comes the Sun is the first episode of the eighteenth season and the 381st overall episode of Grey's Anatomy.

Short Summary[]

As the city of Seattle revels at the Phoenix Fair celebrating the city's rebirth post-COVID, the Grey Sloan doctors treat a patient who encounters illegal fireworks. Meanwhile, Bailey has her sights set on hiring new doctors, but she's having trouble finding viable options. Owen and Teddy attempt to take the next step in their engagement, and Meredith has a surprising opportunity when she meets a dynamic doctor from her mother's past.

Full Summary[]

Meredith takes a moment to herself in an empty OR. She heads out and walks past Richard and Bailey to the OR board, which is filled with lap choles for her. Richard comments it's boring but she says is glad to be back in the OR. Bailey scoffs. Meredith leaves when her phone rings. She enters a room where her mother is waiting for her. Ellis scolds her for keeping her waiting. She asks Meredith what she's going to do now that she survived the unthinkable. There better be something better for her in store than ordinary lap choles.

Meredith awakens from her dream in a hotel room.

On their way home from their honeymoon, Maggie and Winston are stuck in traffic due to the accident at the Phoenix Fair. Winston jokingly proposes they call in and join the festivities. She prefers calling in for another reason, but her wrist still hurts. Maggie asked Bailey not to schedule her in the OR for the next couple of days.

Amelia and Link slip into an argument about an argument during their visit with Dr. Shulman. Link points out a lot of people get married, which she doesn't count as a valid reason for them to get married. He gave her space and time and then came up with a special proposal. She felt ambushed and manipulated. She maintains that marriage is archaic. Dr. Shulman reminds them they are there for Scout, who seems to be hitting all his one-year milestones.

Cormac passes by Bailey, who shows a drunk man to the ER exit. They are doing job interviews with Maggie today. He invites her and her family to dinner. His sons are struggling, especially his youngest, and Cormac would like for them to meet Bailey's teenagers. He brushes it off when she struggles to give a clear answer.

Meredith is at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. While on a video call, Richard reminds her of her ties to Grey Sloan. She maintains that she is only there because they are dedicating a research library to her mother, not for a job interview. Meredith ends the call when her tour guide arrives, Dr. David Hamilton. David comments she is the spitting image of her mother.

Megan, Evelyn, and Farouk meet Owen and his kids in the park. Megan apologizes for Nathan, who had an overseas trip planned for months. Moments later, Teddy arrives with a bouquet. They are getting married. As the family takes their places, Father Christopher joins them and the ceremony starts. Just as the Father is about to pronounce them husbands and wives, a tandem bike with Phoenix Fair celebrators crashes into him.

Jo is confused when Levi shows up at her door dressed as a Phoenix. Levi is confused by Jo's blonde hair. She tried lightening her hair a few shades herself but fell asleep while doing so. She goes to make a bottle for a crying Luna. She has been busy studying while Luna sleeps and she is supposed to go back to work today. She needs help and Levi is the only person who answered their phone.

Maggie runs into Amelia, Link and Scout in the lobby and greets her nephew. Link leaves to take his son to daycare. Amelia then tells Maggie she and Link turned Scout's check-up into couples therapy, during which she accused Link of being a gas-lighter and old-fashioned for equating commitment to marriage. As she walks off, she notes Maggie's wrist brace and pieces together that it is a sex injury.

Richard meets Taryn in the ambulance bay, who informs him there is a pedestrian incoming who was hit by a bike during the Undies Bike Race. They are surprised when the Owen and Teddy climb out of the rig. They say the man was their priest and they take him to Trauma 2.

Nico catches up with Link on the way to the ER. The biker is hypotensive and has numbness in her leg. Link has a big smile on his face to hide the pain inside. They head into the trauma room, where Winston is already taking care of Nadi. Link and Nico study the scans, which reveal spinal fractures. Nadi says she and her wife Emma bought the tandem bike to spend time together after their son left for college. Nadi says she is hot. Link orders an MRI to assess damage to the nervous system and then heads towards Emma. He runs into Amelia there. Emma thinks Nadi is mad at her for making them attend the bike race. Emma wonders if the priest is okay.

Cormac, Bailey, and Maggie are impressed by prodigy Dr. Kyle Schroeder until he dismisses Jackson's pro bono pediatric reconstructive surgery program and disapproves of pro bono work altogether.

Jo and Levi arrive at work late. Levi rushes into the building while Jo struggles with Luna's stroller. All of the baby stuff falls onto the ground. She sighs and sits.

Meredith takes a video call from Bailey, who says she requires two years' notice. Bailey dismisses Minnesota. Meredith reiterates the reason for her visit. Bailey thinks that's how they lured her there. Meredith hangs up and returns to David. He tells her about incoming funding for his mRNA technology projects. He says she herself is close to doing groundbreaking work. They arrive outside the The Grey Center for Medical Research. He then says Ellis's research library is down the hall. This lab is for Meredith, if she wants it.

Teddy joins Owen in the trauma room as the priest deteriorates. They diagnose a cardiac tamponade and rush to treat it.

While in the MRI, Nadi says she is feeling cold now. Winston joins Link and Nico in the suite and asks them to check out his rotator cuff. Nico says he probably strained it, which he sees a lot in post-honeymoon couples. The images come up, showing thoracic and lumbar compression fractures and a tethered spinal cord with a syrinx. Link's smile fades because this means neuro has to get involved.

Bailey jokes that Maggie hurt her wrist on her honeymoon due to handcuffs, which appears not to be too far from the truth. The next round of applicants does not feature any viable option.

Link and Amelia explain the surgical plan to Nadi, who is now in a patient room with Emma. They will fix the T6 fracture first with Winston's help, then take care of the L1 fracture and the tethered cord. Nadi blames Emma for the accident because she was apparently too distracted by people in thongs. Emma says she was reading something interesting written on an anti-oil activist's body. Emma gets out of her bed to apologize to Nadi. Nadi then says she can't feel or move her legs. Link and Amelia rush her to the OR.

David shows Meredith around in the extensively equipped lab. David is developing cellular therapy for experimental surgery for Parkinson's disease. He has the money, the staff, and the toys to make it happen. All he needs is a surgeon to convince the FDA to grant approval for a clinical trial. David can't do it himself because he is the patient.

Meredith takes a call from Hayes, who tells her not to take any job they are offering her so he won't have to sit through any more interviews. She asks about Austin. He apologizes again, which she doesn't want to hear. Meredith hangs up as Cormac dismisses Minnesota.

Megan joins Owen, Teddy, and Taryn in their OR. He has requested Megan's help to tend to the spleen. Nurse James informs them that Father Christopher's niece just arrived. Teddy warns him that the man is named Patrick, but Owen reveals he actually had to get another priest because he asked father Patrick only two days in advance. Teddy scoffs because getting his mother's favorite priest was the one thing Owen had to take care of.

Richard and Sara join Levi in a trauma room. Levi is freaking out over the damage to Brad DiMarco's face caused by fireworks. From outside the room, Brad's friend Tara informs the doctors that Brad is on mushrooms. Sara runs outside to tend to Tara.

Winston has finished his part of Nadi's surgery and heads back to the ER to help Richard. Nico is puzzled how Nadi was never diagnosed with a tethered cord earlier in her life. Link says she always ignored the pain. Amelia adds that only ended up giving her more pain. As Amelia cuts the filum, Link asks Nico if he would ever join Levi on a tandem bike. Nico doesn't find it necessary to share hobbies in a relationship. Amelia likes independence, which Link says is something else from doing whatever you please despite the other person. When they lose Nadi's potentials, Amelia says she either paralyzed her or there is a bleeding in the syrinx.

The trio are interview Michelle Lin, who has never been actual head of a department. Michelle knows the same thing was true for Bailey when she was appointed Chief. Michelle knows they need her after the post-COVID physician shortage. She is not happy under her lazy and misogynistic Chief. Richard then barges in to fetch Michelle. He grants her privileges and demands her help on Brad's case.

Over dinner, David starts showing a tremor. His meds keep him symptom-free for a couple of hours. He says Meredith's name has become synonymous to cutting-edge and seeing things through to the end. He needs that. Meredith has him talk her through his idea. He stresses that this would make her the public face of a possible cure for Parkinson's disease. Meredith looks around and sees Nick Marsh leaving the restaurant with his date. Meredith states she is not a neurosurgeon but David is sure she will attract the best.

Teddy tells Owen they are technically still not married. The priest didn't sign the certificate. Megan blurts out she and Riggs broke up a couple of months ago. The pandemic split them up and he shipped back out with his NGO. She didn't want to ruin Owen's day before now it fits with the theme of crap show. The priest goes into V-fib.

Amelia instructs Link to open the dura even further. He hesitates but she trusts him to do it. The move exposes a bleed in the syrinx. Amelia goes to remove the clot.

Michelle has started working on Brad's face with Levi assisting. She encourages Bailey, Maggie, Cormac, and Richard to finish the interview as she works. Michelle talks about her training while instructing Levi.

Owen, Teddy, and Megan inform father Christopher's niece that they were not able to save him. Betsy says at least he died doing what he loved most. As Teddy starts tearing up, Megan and Owen escort her away so Betsy can grieve in private. Teddy walks off. Owen thinks the priest's death is a sign but Megan firmly disagrees. She instructs Owen to follow her.

Link and Amelia inform Emma that Nadi made it through and that the priest has died. Emma says Nadi will hate her even more now. Emma says marriage is really good in the beginning but then you end up quietly hating each other after a few years. Emma tried to do something fun for them, to not be the people who have nothing in common anymore.

Meredith arrives back at her hotel. An employee escorts her to the bar. Nick is waiting for her there. She joins him and asks how he found her. He took a chance at the five-star hotel right next to the hospital.

As she gets a drink, Meredith says she thought he hadn't seen her earlier at the restaurant. He says she is pretty hard to miss. She asks about his date, which was horrible. Meredith says she is seeing someone, but then corrects herself. It ended because his son had a hard time with it. Meredith states she is not sleeping with Nick, which he is fine with. His niece wanted him to thank her for saving his kidney. Charlotte made it to college. His house is too quiet now. Meredith talks about surviving COVID. Nick knows being a miracle is a lot of pressure. It bears the question of what you're going to do with it. Meredith says that very question haunts her dreams. She agrees to another drink.

Brad is moved to the ICU. Tara hugs Michelle. Bailey then formally offers Michelle the job. She thanks them but she relies heavily on residents to help with her patient load and practice. She moves fast and doesn't like to hold trainees' hands. She expects residents to anticipate her next move. From what she saw today, the residents at Grey Sloan are not on the level where she needs them to be. Richard says the pandemic set their residents back a year. However, no one is as determined as he is to make them better. Michelle will think about the offer.

Owen drags a reluctant Teddy to Joe's bar. She doesn't want to see people. When they enter, the whole room applauds. Most of their close colleagues and Owen's family are there. They are accepting donations to father Christopher's church and they are getting married to honor him. Owen doesn't want to wait anymore. Teddy points out her dress smells like antiseptic and the place is decorated for the Phoenix Fair. Owen says rising from the ashes is their theme. Teddy wonders who will officiate. Megan got ordained. Owen thanks everyone for attending the wedding and they pick up the ceremony where they left off. The couple says their "I do"s and Megan quickly pronounces them husband and wife before anything else can happen.

Link sees Amelia in the attendings' lounge and decides to go talk to her. He knows marriage can be a faulty institution but he wants to do it right, better than his parents did. Amelia says she does not want to. He used to not want to with her. Link says he got through the pandemic due to the woman he loves. He wants more of that. He wants a lifetime with her. Amelia loves him and their son. They share a kiss. Link asks her to marry him, then. She says no again. He leaves.

As the guests dance, Winston gets some ice to put on his shoulder. If only people knew how wild Maggie can be in her personal life. She suggest they head out. He happily follows her. Bailey joins Cormac at the bar and asks what is going on with his youngest. He tells her that Austin is having intense panic attacks, which started when he found out that Cormac was starting to date. Cormac stopped dating when he saw what it was doing to his son but Austin is still having these episodes. Bailey then invites his family for dinner at her place on Sunday.

Link finds Jo in her car out in the parking lot, with Luna in the backseat. Jo confesses that she never entered the building today. Every time she walks out of a room, she wonders if she is making Luna feel the way that she must have felt when her mother left her at the fire station. Jo doesn't want to leave her side ever. Link laughs at her hair. He says she will continue to feel guilty. Her daughter should the first thing in her mind, always. He thinks it's over with Amelia, which he regrets deeply. Jo drives them home.

Nick walks Meredith to her room. She is staying for a couple more days to look at some research. She says she is not inviting him in. He wasn't asking to be invited in. They wish each other good night. He looks back as he walks off. She tells him to keep walking. He jokes that she is bossy. She smiles and enters her room, closing the door behind her.

Nadi was riding a tandem bicycle with her wife when her wife became distracted, causing them to collide with Father Christopher. Nadi was thrown about ten feet from the bike. Her legs were numb, so they suspected spinal fractures. In the ER, Winston placed a chest tube to treat hemothorax. She had tandem fractures at T6 and L1. She was able to press her feet into Link's hands, but was weak on both sides. She complained of being hot in the ER, so Link ordered an MRI as he was worried about damage to her autonomic nervous system. By the time she got to the MRI, she was freezing. The MRI showed thoracic compression fractures and a tethered spinal cord with a syrinx. The tethered spinal cord was a pre-existing condition, but the lumbar fractures put pressure on it. She was told she'd need surgery, where they'd fix her fractures and cut her tethered cord to free it. However, before she could be taken into surgery, she told the doctors she couldn't move or feel her legs, so they rushed her into surgery immediately. They repaired the first fracture and then flipped her to clip the cord. Amelia did so, but Nadi became unstable, making Amelia fear she'd been paralyzed. They cut open the dura to expose the cord and find the bleeding, then evacuated the clot. Her wife was told she'd make a full recovery.
