“ | Sometimes, firefighting is all about the fantasy. It's hot, sexy, heroic. And on our best days, we save someone's life. From a fire, from an impalement, from themself. Whatever the case may be, it's the highest of highs. But also the lowest of lows. The thing about fantasies is, when reality comes, it's rarely how you pictured it. The guy you once loved injures out, your best friend decides to move across the country, or a day that is supposed to be one of the happiest days of your life... just might turn out to be your worst. | ” |
How Am I Supposed to Live Without You is the ninth episode of the seventh season and the 104th overall episode of Station 19.
Short Summary[]
When a wildfire threatens Seattle, the crew must jump into action to save their city. Meanwhile, as the station undergoes changes, Andy contemplates the future.
Full Summary[]
Ross and Sullivan have sex. Her phone rings and she wants to answer it, but he stops her, saying they'll wait and he'll be quick.
Maya and Carina are having sex when Carina suddenly asks if she should take a pregnancy test. It's been 12 days since the transfer. Maya say she can if she wants, but Carina decides it can wait because it's probably too early anyway. She'd rather focus on her hot wife. She kisses her way down Maya's abdomen, licking her belly button on the way.
Dominic kisses his way up Travis's chest and they kiss. As Dominic's hand reaches down Travis's body, Vic's voice breaks through.
Travis wakes to Vic saying they need to leave and if he doesn't hurry, she'll leave without him. He looks down under the sheet and says he'll be out in a minute.
Carina holds up two pregnancy tests and tells Maya they're negative, so the embryo probably didn't take. Maya says they don't know that yet. Carina says she reviewed all her own tests and there's no reason she shouldn't be able to carry, but maybe she missed something. Maya reminds Carina that she was the one who said it was too early to know from an at-home test. Carina needs to get going, so she asks Maya to take Liam to Peggy and Dayna's, saying she'll pick him up on her way home. Maya says she was checking on the wildfire and isn't sure it's safe for Carina to be volunteering only a mile away from it. Carina says they need doctors and she can't stop doing her job just because she might be pregnant. They tell each other they love each other and kiss, then Carina leaves. Maya pulls out her phone and checks again on the wildfire, which is moving west.
Andy is on the phone with Jack, who is also monitoring the wildfire. She hangs up with him when Vic comes into her office. Vic tells Andy that Crisis One is officially going national. Andy is excited and they hug. Andy realizes Vic isn't as happy as she is and Vic admits that she's moving to DC to run it. Andy says that's still good. They need to tell the team, but Vic wants to tell Travis first.
On the roof, Vic tells Travis that she'll come visit and he can come to DC and they can critique the first ladies' inauguration dresses and do other tourist-y things. Vic needs Travis to understand it's a good thing. Travis says he's happy, but it's hard. Travis sees the wildfire smoke in the distance and alerts Vic to it.
Andy has the team lined up and says they don't know if they'll be called in, so they need to be ready. They need to get their wildfire gear onto the rigs. Once they're dismissed, Vic tries to continue her conversation with Travis, but he brushes her off, saying they need to get things ready.
Ross checks in with Chief Gonzalez of the Fall City Fire Department, who has set up base camp. He leads her inside and tells her the fire started 12 hours ago outside Fall City. Embers created a second smaller fire, so he has teams on each, working to keep them away from each other. Ross asks if he's calling in other departments, but he says not yet. He's confident in that decision.
Theo, Kate, and Dominic arrived a Cloudhead Ranch, where campers are being instructed to evacuate. Their job is to protect one single building per the owner's orders. Theo is bewildered, but Kate reminds him that that's their job.
As they prepare supplies, Beckett asks Maya how the IVF is going. Maya says they're waiting to see if it took and she's worried about her possibly-pregnant wife volunteering near the wildfires. Beckett says his mom smoked while she was pregnant with him, but that proves Maya's point. Beckett says being pregnant doesn't mean she stops doing her job. Maya asks him about him previously mentioning doing IVF with his ex-wife. He says she wanted a baby more than anything so they tried it, but it was too expensive and they had to stop and their marriage was falling apart anyway. But just because it didn't work for them doesn't mean it won't work for her and Carina.
The fire has grown. Fire B is almost at the ridge, Ross tells Gonzalez. It's only a matter of time before the fires merge. She thinks it's time to call a 5-alarm. He says he's not prepared to do that and is sticking with a 3-alarm. He's worried they won't have the resources to contain it if the fire spreads north or south. Ross disagrees and insists that she's correct. It could wipe out Seattle and she's not willing to gamble on that.
Beckett and Ben question Sullivan about the wedding and they tease Beckett about Jinny. Sullivan says it'll probably be next year, but they haven't set a date yet.
Maya is shocked that Vic is moving. She thought Vic would be at 19 forever. But it's a good thing. They're happy for her. Andy says yes, but she pictured her team when she finally became captain and the reality isn't matching that. First it was Jack, then Theo, and now Vic. Maya says that was her father's version of the team and they all love it because they grew up with it but Andy needs to make her own version. Just then, they get called out to the wildfire. Andy warns them to keep their eyes open, have each other's backs, and communicate.
Ross enters the medical tent, where Carina is treating patients. Ross thanks her for coming and Carina asks if 19 has been called in yet. Ross says they just were. Carina goes to Rebecca, who is begging a firefighter to go find her husband who was out there with her. She tells Carina she was at the campsite yesterday, but she and her husband went off with another couple they just met to go backpacking. They woke up with the fire on top of them. They got separated. Carina says she's sure he's doing what he can to find his way back to her. She gives Rebecca oxygen and Rebecca wonders what if this is it for her and her husband. Carina has no answer.
Travis tells Vic she can't leave because her life is in Seattle. She needs to stay because she keeps the plants alive and checks in on her parents. Vic admits that she doesn't keep the plants alive. She just buys new ones before he notices. Travis doesn't believe her, but says that's not the point. He thinks someone else can take Crisis One national. Vic says or it could be her, because it's her baby. She's good at it and it brings her joy. Travis asks what about his joy. He's not saying he's more important than Crisis One, but he is questioning the timing of her uprooting her life. Vic says she's not like Travis and the thought of doing that doesn't scare her. It excites her. She refuses to stay stuck and complacent. Travis says he's not stuck. Vic is upset with him for making it all about him. She wants her best friend to be happy for her. Andy radios to tell them they're arriving at base camp and echoes her previous statements about being there for each other.
At base camp, Ross assigns Andy to incident command over the Cloudhead Ranch. They need to finish evacuating and the clear any debris that the fire will use to spread. They're the last line of defense keeping the fire from moving west. If it goes over the mountains, it's going right into Seattle. She tells them to take the engine and leave the ladder truck and aid car at base camp. They'll have three engines, plus a private fire company, but they probably won't be much help. But they will have help. She points out four academy graduates who have just arrived. She designed their curriculum herself and says they're the best. She's sending them with Andy because she's also the best. Andy tells Ross she's ready. Ross tells them to be safe and directs Maya to Carina. Maya says she'll meet Andy back at the rig and goes to see Carina.
In the medical tent, Maya finds Ben and questions him leaving the engine. He says he just wanted to see how many patients are passing through. Carina says it's busy. She figured she'd see Maya there. They promise to see each other at home and then Maya leaves, calling for Ben to join.
Maritza Zamora tells Matthew Richards that they are going by their last names now and need to be professionals. He tells her she's hot when she's professional. Andy tells all the probies that they're not cadets anymore. The second they step out of the rig, they're firefighters. They need to help how and where they can and listen to their lieutenants and captains and have each other's backs.
They arrive at the ranch and Andy gives orders. She sees Zamora carrying a hose over her arm and tells her it'll be easier if she puts it on her shoulder and secures the nozzle. Once everyone else is working, Andy calls Maya to her and they start exploring the area. Andy says the private company is covering one of the buildings, so they have the tents and everything else. Andy is shocked to see it's Theo and calls him out for standing by protecting one building while everything else burns. Theo says he quit to fix her budget, so she can't get mad at him. Andy leaves him to it as they search for higher ground.
Andy and Maya get their eyes on the fire. It's huge. They hear Eliza Meacham yelling for help and go to her. She says she's fine, but the guy she was with is not. She leads them to Cameron, who has burns all over his body.
Eliza says she met Cameron yesterday and he must have gone deeper into the fire to find his wife, Rebecca. When Eliza found him, he was burnt. She's also looking for her fiancé. Maya says he might have made his way out and could be at the medical tent. Andy hands Cameron off to Ben and says she'll call for an aid car. Ben has Richards bag Cameron while he evaluates the situation. Nearby, Eliza blows her whistle. She and her fiancé both have them in case they lose each other. Since leaving the Marines, they've been going on adventures together and the whistles have been their most important tool. She says his name is Bill and Sullivan promises they'll keep an eye out for him. He tells her he met his fiancée in the Marines as well.
Vic points out a spot fire and Beckett moves to put it out. She tells Travis she doesn't like that they're weird right now. Travis says they're just fighting and that's what she doesn't like. He finishes that they're fighting a wildfire. He sees Dominic nearby and waves, which Vic teases him for. Over the radio, Andy directs them to a garage, where a civilian is trapped with a dog.
Andy tells Ben that the aid car is 40 minutes away. Ben says they don't have 40 minutes. Richards thinks he's doing something wrong because it's getting harder, but Ben says his airway is closing off, so it's harder to get air in. He tells Andy they're going to have to carry him instead, as it'll be quicker than waiting for the aid car and the tent is only a mile away. He secures Cameron's airway as Andy prepares some others, including Sullivan, to help carry. Ben is unable to lift Cameron, so he takes over bagging and has Richards help. Sullivan asks Eliza if she's okay walking with them and she reminds him she was in the Marines.
Vic radios Andy to ask for backup, saying they're trapped with the spot fires. Andy says she'll send someone, but everyone is occupied, so she prepares to go herself. Theo overhears this and says he'll go. Dominic says he will, too, despite Kate reminding them that their job is to protect the building.
Gonzalez tells Ross she made a good call and he respects her not standing down. She's not one to give in, especially when she knows she's right. Gonzalez says they have more fire than they have people to fight it. Ross is worried about it making it to the city. She has an idea, though, a Hail Mary. She leaves to make calls.
Travis is glad to see Theo. Once Theo starts putting out the spot fires, Travis goes to help Vic and together, they evacuate Christopher and his dog.
Ben brings Cameron into the medical tent and puts him down. Carina says she'll get to him when she's done where she is. Rebecca recognizes Cameron and comes over. She thanks Eliza for finding him and staying with him. Eliza asks if Rebecca has seen Bill but she hasn't. Sullivan leads them away as Ben puts on a gown. He calls for help, but Carina's not done. Ben says Cameron needs an escharotomy and can't wait, so he does it himself.
With the pressure relieved, Cameron is able to breathe. Carina comes over and is horrified that Ben did an escharotomy on his own. He says he had to. She says she'll take it from here and sends him back. He is reluctant to go, but Carina says he should get back to the team, to Maya. She steps in and calls to have someone check about an aid car. As they leave, Richards tells Ben that was awesome and asks where he learned it. He explains that he was a doctor.
Beckett tells the probies it's time to break to get some food. Once everyone has gathered, Andy sets up night watch. One half will take first watch while the other half rests, then they'll swap. She asks them to notify her of any changes. She specifically tells the probies to get some rests and tells them hose beds can be pretty comfortable. She notices Zamora seems hesitant and asks her about it. Zamora apologizes for messing up with the hose earlier. Andy says doing things right in the academy and right in the field are two different things and says she won't make the same mistake again. Zamora thanks her and walks way.
Maya tells Andy that Richards reminds her of Jack. Andy agrees. Andy asks how Maya is and how Carina is. Maya says Carina is convinced the IVF didn't work and Maya doesn't know how to help her. Andy tells her just to be there for her. Maya says if it doesn't work, she might want to try it. Andy is shocked that she'd want to get pregnant. Andy says she's come a long way since deciding monogamy was for the weak. Maya reminds her that she also said it was for the very, very dedicated, which is what she is now. Andy's proud of her and Maya's proud of Andy. Andy gets called away to deal with something.
Gonzalez is on the phone, talking about how their resources are exhausted when he sees Ross speaking to a group of firefighters and stops. Ross knows it hasn't been the easiest year. Many of them were laid off or forced into retirement by the budget cuts, but when the call came, they answered it. She tells them to stay say and dismisses them. Gonzales is impressed with Ross for bringing them in. She just hopes it's enough.
Travis goes to see Dominic, who has a large tent to sleep in. Travis admits that Vic is leaving. Dominic knew that because Vic told Theo, who won't shut up about it. Travis is upset that Vic told Theo before telling him. Dominic says he was her boyfriend, but Travis emphasizes the past tense of that. Dominic says he's taking it harder than Theo did. Travis says his husband was his best friend and then he died and two weeks later, this bubbly, talks too much woman entered his life and got him through it. He thinks Michael sent Vic to him because he knew Travis would need someone. She's been by his side ever since. Travis remembers Vic saying she couldn't be stuck there forever. Travis says his whole life is there. He's lived there his whole life. As he talks, he realizes he's scared of change. Vic was right, which sucks so much. Dominic says change is terrifying and of course he doesn't want Vic to leave. She's his best friend. Dominic says maybe the lesson here is to let people in like he did with her. It led to something really beautiful. Travis thanks him.
Ben joins Vic inside the engine. She asks about Cameron and Ben says he's stable and being transported. He rubs his aching shoulder as he tells Vic he was a good doctor today, but doesn't think he was a good firefighter. He couldn't life Cameron. His body keeps failing him. Vic says when they're in it, they feel like they'll be in it forever and that's not always the case. Things happen and people move on. They'll stay in each other's life because they're family forever at 19. Ben asks if she's okay. She says she's having trouble getting comfortable, so she's going to try up top. Before she leaves, she tells Ben he's pretty good at both jobs. He's come a long way. Ben thanks her, calling her Hughie. It's been a while since she's heard that, but Ben says that's what they call her to Pru, so she'll know him like Dean did. She says that's nice.
Carina checks the fire status on her phone, then texts Maya.
Maya replies to Carina, asking for lasagna when she gets home.
After texting Maya that she loves her, Carina gets up to check on Liam, who is babbling. She picks him up and asks what he's doing up so late. She rocks him and tells him Mom will be back.
Travis climbs up onto the engine, where Vic is trying to sleep. He lies down next to her and tells her he's sorry. He wants her to go because he thinks the world needs to her and he can't keep her all to himself even though he wants to. Vic wishes she could stay for him, but she can't. Vic then says Travis could come with her. She's serious. They could run Crisis One together and travel all over the country. They work well together. She just wants him to come with her. Travis isn't sure, but Vic says he doesn't have to know right now. She wants him to think about it because she thinks it would be great. Ben joins them and says they should be sleeping. He takes Travis's place, forcing him to the other side. Then Maya and Andy join them. Vic can't believe they all still fit. They all start to fall asleep.
They wake to Beckett saying the fire is over the ridge. Andy gives orders and they all rush to push the fire back. Andy is surprised to see Ross there. She was doing rounds, but the road was blocked so she walked and doesn't plan on walking back. Andy asks for more engines, but they don't have any. Andy suggests calling the Tulalip firefighters, who have specialized vehicles for fighting wildfires. Ross leaves to find a signal, passing Sullivan and Beckett.
Theo is putting out spot fires. Kate says she's going to go around the back and he warns her to be careful. Then Theo sees a branch cracking over Travis's head and pushes Travis out of the way, getting hit himself. He is trapped and injured as Andy, Vic, and Travis run to him.
Station 19 works to cut up the tree to free Theo. Vic holds his hand and she and Travis reassure him.
Beckett sees Kate watching them and reminds her the best way to help is to get the fire out. She gets back to work.
They lift the tree off Theo as Ross calls for a medevac. Theo has an open femur fracture, so Ben applies a tourniquet. Andy tells them they have a helicopter coming in, so they need to move him away from the tree. They get him on a backboard and lift him, but then Ben notices bruising around his pelvis and has them put him down so he can stabilize his pelvis. Theo starts to say something to Vic, but she tells him they're not doing any of the things people do when they think they're dying because he's not dying. She tells him to focus on what he has left to do with his life. They lift him again and load him into the medevac. The pilot indicates that one person can go with him, so Ben goes.
As they watch the helicopter leave, Andy and Maya hear whistling. They realize it must be Bill.
At the hospital, Taryn notices Carina in distress and asks if she's okay. Carina says there's a wildfire out there and she spent all day yesterday in the medical tent, seeing people who have lost everything while she's freaking out over whether or not she's pregnant. She can't bring herself to look because she can't take another hit if it's negative. Taryn offers to look for her.
Maya and Carina search for Bill, following the direction of the whistling.
Carina hands Taryn the tablet, but the results aren't in yet.
Andy radios their status back to Ross and asks for hose packs as Maya goes on ahead. As Andy struggles to get a response, the fire flares up behind Maya, trapping her inside.
Taryn refreshes again and the results still aren't there, so Carina tells her to forget it. She has patients, so she doesn't have time for this and she's not going to stop doing her job whether she's pregnant or not because she has a wife and a life and career. Taryn interrupts her ranting to tell her she's pregnant. Carina starts to cry.
Maya looks around at the flames surrounding her.
Taryn tells Carina she should probably tell her wife and Carina jokes about it being Maya's baby.
Andy calls out to Maya from the other side of the fire.

Fall City Wildfire[]
A wildfire was heading toward Seattle after starting 12 hours prior outside Fall City. Floating embers created a smaller fire. Chief Gonzalez had three teams working to keep the fires from meeting. Ross asked him if he was bringing in additional teams and he said no. The wind shifted to the west, which left Fire B nearly to the ridge separating the two. She urged Gonzalez to call a 5-alarm, but he insisted on staying at a 3-alarm, saying if the fire grew north and they'd already called everyone in, they'd be unprotected. When Ross insisted, Gonzalez called in additional units, including Station 19.
In the medical tent, Rebecca begged them to find her husband as she was treated. They had woken up in the fire and gotten separated, along with the couple they were with.
When 19 arrived, Andy was assigned as task force commander for Cloudhead Ranch, which had civilians waiting for evacuation. They were the last line of defense keeping the fire from moving west toward the city. Ross said they'd have three engines, but would leave their aid car and ladder truck at base camp. She also send some academy graduates with them to provide assistance. When they arrived, Andy sent Ben and Sullivan to evacuate the campers while the probies laid hose line toward the fire with Beckett and Wiggins supervising. She sent Vic and Travis to clear furniture and brush from the tents. Then she and Maya evaluated the area. With Bennett covering the main lodge, that left them to cover the tents and surrounding area. While they were walking around, they ran into Eliza, who said she was fine, but the man who was with her wasn't. She led them to Cameron, who was seriously burned. He ran into the fire to find his wife, Rebecca. Eliza said she couldn't find her fiancé. They evacuated Cameron and called an aid car to take him to safety. Ben had Richard ventilate him while they waited. Eliza blew a whistle, which she said she used to help her find her fiancé, Bill, when they went out to remote locations. With an aid car 40 minutes away, Ben said they'd have to carry Cameron to the tent, as it was only a mile away.
The team put out several spot fires and cleared debris to prevent the fire from spreading. Andy redirected Vic and Travis to a tent with a trapped civilian and a dog. When they asked for backup, Andy went to go herself, but Dominic and Theo said they'd go.
Back at base camp, Gonzalez told Ross she made a good call and he was proud of her for not caving in. They still didn't have enough firefighters. Ross had the idea for a hail Mary to buy them some time and called in the firefighters who had been laid off or forced to retire due to the budget cuts.
With Dominic and Theo's help, Travis and Vic were able to rescue the civilian and the dog.
Ben and the probies took Cameron to the tent and Carina said she'd be with him in a moment. Seeing that Cameron's breathing was restricted by the burned skin and with no doctors immediately available, Ben did an escharotomy, which allowed him to breathe. Carina sent Ben back to the fire while she took over with Cameron.
After resting overnight, station 19 woke up to find the fire had come over the ridge. Andy quickly directed her team where to start working. Ross joined them and offered her help. She said they had no more engines available, but when Andy told her about Tulalip, she moved to find a signal to call them for backup.
When Theo saw a tree about to fall on Travis, he pushed Travis out of the way, but got hit and trapped himself. They cut apart the tree and freed him. He had an open femur fracture, so Ben applied a tourniquet and they called for a medevac. With the bleeding under control, they moved him onto a backboard and moved him away from the tree. Ben then noticed bruising on his abdomen and said he needed to stabilize Theo's pelvis. He did so and then Ben went with him in the medevac.
Once Theo was gone, they heard a whistle in the distance. Maya and Andy followed it, certain it would lead them to Bill. Andy called for extra help while Maya walked ahead. Then fire sprung up behind Maya, trapping her inside the fire.
Cloudhead Ranch[]
Theo, Dominic, and Kate, working for Bennett, came to Cloudhead Ranch to protect one building that the owner said to prioritize. When they learned of a trapped civilian and dog, Theo and Dominic abandoned their post to help station 19.

Notes and Trivia[]
- This episode's title originated from the song How Am I Supposed to Live Without You, originally sung by Laura Branigan.
- This episode scored 2.40 million viewers.[1]
- The episode is dedicated to Jim "JK" Koenekamp, the series' fire apparatus coordinator, who passed away during filming of this episode.[2]
- This is the first episode since Into the Wildfire which has a voice-over narrated by Andy Herrera.
- As the first part of the series finale, the episode features several Easter eggs to previous episodes:
- Travis' line "Dibs on the puppy" and Andy's line "Wet stuff on the red stuff" were said by Dean in the pilot. Writer Zaiver Sinnett tried to work the puppy line into the episode but could not find a natural way to do it. On the day of filming, director Tessa Blake informed Zaiver that Jay Hayden had requested to work the line into the episode and they figured it out on the day itself.[3]
- As Maya and Andy discuss the couple's fertility struggles, they recall Maya's statement that "Monogamy is for the weak. Or the very, very dedicated" from Contain the Flame.
- The firefighters trying to get some sleep on top of the engine is reminiscent of them gathering in the same place to support Vic after Lucas's death in Always Ready. All five of them even lie in the same exact position. A minor difference is Andy holding Ben's hand in this episode while she held Dean's in Always Ready. It is also noteworthy that the five firefighters lying on top of the engine are the only five firefighters from the start of the series who are still presently part of the team.
- The team helping out to fight a wildfire was previously shown in Into the Wildfire.
- In the scene where Maya and Carina discuss the at-home pregnancy tests, Maya wears the same jacket she wore when first meeting Carina at Joe's bar in Into the Woods.
- Maya asking for lasagna is a reference to lasagna being a recurring subject in Maya and Carina's relationship. Carina brought Maya lasagna at work at the start of their relationship in Satellite of Love and Maya made lasagna as an apology to Carina in Even Better Than the Real Thing.
- Travis calls Vic his person, something he did before in Forever and Ever, Amen.
- Ben calling Vic "Hughie" is a reference to Dean always using that nickname for her.
- Vic moving to D.C. for the Crisis One program and asking Travis to move with her is reminiscent of the time Dean was contemplating moving to Oakland to start a similar program there and asking Vic to come with him in Things We Lost in the Fire. Vic only asking Travis this after Ben reminded her of Dean by calling her "Hughie" was intentional.[3] Additionally, the camera angle on Vic as she asks Travis to come is the same as the one when Dean asked her to come.
- Writer Zaiver Sinnett intended to focus on the remaining original characters and showcase their growth throughout the series.[3]
