Short Summary[]
Dixon threatens Natasha in the aftermath of his poor judgement. Meanwhile, Jack is met with disappointment on his first day back. Diane visits Maya, and the team responds to a fire in Theo's old neighborhood.
Full Summary[]
Maya cleans the apartment.
Jack gets ready for work.
Maya continues cleaning.
Jack opens his locker and gets hit with fake snakes. The rest of the team jumps out and welcomes him back.
Maya is moving the couch when there's a knock at the door. She opens it to find Diane Lewis. She didn't forget that Diane was coming, but she didn't realize it was time for Diane to be there. She hasn't been sleeping much and decided to do a deep clean around 4 AM, then lost track of time. Diane asks if Carina is home and Maya says Carina doesn't live there anymore. Maya doesn't know where she lives now and hasn't heard from her since the day Carina had her committed to a "loony bin." Diane says that term dates back to when we used to make fun of people going through mental health crises and felt the term was beneath her and Maya. Diane carved out her whole day to be with Maya, so she hopes she can come in. Maya welcomes her in and opens some windows to disperse the smell of the cleaning products.
Beckett comes into the beanery and welcomes Jack back to work. Jack says he's happy to help out while Maya's on leave. He assigns Sullivan to supervise Jack until he's adjusted to the job. Jack doesn't think that's necessary, but Sullivan says he's been away for more than six months, so he's the grunt.
Ross, Vic, Andy, and Dixon meet in Ross's office. Dixon says he's appalled about what happened with Jamal. It makes both their departments look back. Ross says she read about it, but her department wasn't mentioned in the coverage. Dixon wants to change the narrative to avoid people losing trust in their public servants. He wants Ross to stand with him at the press conference he's holding in front of City Hall and show people that FD and PD are united preventing accidents like the other night. Vic interjects that it wasn't an accident, but Andy tries to quiet her. Dixon says his people got it wrong just like her people got it wrong when they leaked his and his wife's private information from the Crisis One call. Kitty's talking about lawsuits, which could get ugly quickly. Ross says Jamal got home safely to his family, which Dixon attributes to fire and police working together. Ross agrees to be at the press conference. Once Dixon is gone, Andy says she thinks Dixon is bluffing about the lawsuit, but Ross quickly dismisses her and Vic.
Andy comes into the beanery with a pile of paperwork. She's on incident reports. She and Vic tell the others about the meeting and Dixon using the leak as leverage to get Ross's support. Ben says that's another reason they shouldn't leak information. Travis questions how many times Ben is going to bring it up. He says Eli is coming to the station to work on the campaign so the leak won't be for nothing. Jack smiles because he missed them. The alarm goes off and everyone but Andy rushes out.
On the way to the scene, Theo says he hasn't been there in a long time. Vic realizes it's his old neighborhood and he says it's where he lived before his dad died. It's all so different.
Maya moves things around. Diane says she's made plenty of room, but Maya's not sure she can think in a place as messy as the apartment is. Diane says that's fine because they won't be doing a lot of thinking. Maya says she has a hard time resting. Diane says they won't be doing that either. When Maya asks what they are doing, Diane says they're drawing and produces colored pencils. Maya would prefer to think or rest. Diane reminds her that her wife had to 5150 her to get her the medical care she needed and the fire department is waiting for Diane to determine if it's safe for Maya to return to work. She asks if Maya still plans to go back to work at the fire department.
As they arrive at the fire, one of the bystanders, Tomás Silva, recognizes Theo and calls out to him as Beckett gives orders. Theo tells Tomás he has a job to do. Tomás tells Theo to come by the barbershop.
Eli enters the station and Andy is unhappy to see him. She says Travis isn't there and she doesn't have time for him. She blames him for the Dixon leak. Eli says she needs to look at the bigger picture. She wants her to imagine Dixon not becoming mayor. Andy just wants to see Eli gone, never to return.
Sullivan, Vic, and Theo enter the house and begin searching for the residents. Theo finds the fire is off the kitchen. Then they find Mari and Julio in a room trying to get Julio's mother out while Lupe watches. They rush to help.
Diane tells Maya to draw a timeline. Maya asks of what and Diane reminds her she's an Olympian who won a gold medal on a sprained ankle. She asks what happened to Maya's ankle. Maya says she twisted it on Halloween and it hasn't healed. And at the Olympics, she sprained it at the Olympic village two nights before her race. She was chasing a girl from the French relay team while tipsy. She didn't let one stupid night decide her fate, so she ran anyway and won anyway. Diane asks her to make a timeline of her Olympic win, with every moment leading up to it. Maya isn't sure where to start with that and Diane says the important moments will come to her and to start by thinking about the first time she thought she wanted to win. Maya begins writing.
Sullivan and Theo carry Abuela out to triage, where Ben and Jack are waiting to treat her. Abuela says it'll take more than a fire to take her out and reminds them of when they had termites and says this is nothing compared to that. Julio looks at the fire and says they shouldn't have stayed. Mari says it's their home. Their home is going to be foreclosed upon. They did all that work and they're going to lose their house anyway. The firefighters start treating them. Lupe asks if the firefighters will save the house and Theo says they're Seattle's finest.
In the beanery, Eli tries talking to Andy. She reminds him that the deal was that he would be quiet if she let him stay. Eli asks why Andy hates him. She's just trying to balance out his love for himself. Eli doesn't really care if she likes him, but she's influencing Travis. Travis picked him and he knows how to win an election. Without him, Dixon wins. He wants to get in good with Andy because she's the leader of the station. She has pull with everyone there. She'd be helping for the good of humanity.
Diane tells Maya she can stop even though she only got to age twelve. They have enough. Diane asks Maya to read the timeline to her. Maya reads off the first event, when she was three years old at her cousin's track meet. That was the first thought she can remember having about winning. Diane asks if that's because her cousin won and Maya says it's because she lost. She was winning and then she lost and Maya watched the look on her father's face change. Maya tries to get up to get ice, saying her ankle hurts, but Diane stops her and tells her to move toward the pain and let it hurt. She knows Maya can do it. She tells Maya to touch her ankle. When Maya does so, she starts crying. She says she doesn't know why. Then she says she doesn't want to lose. She continues crying and lies down on the floor, repeating that she doesn't want to lose.
Theo tells Mari she's okay and they'll take care of her family. Julio says it'll take more than he thinks to fix their family. Julio says they've lost everything, but Lupe begs them to save the house. Mari realizes their family Bible is still inside the house. Theo tells her to stay outside and he'll go get it. He asks Beckett, who said the fire is contained to two rooms, but he won't allow Theo to go inside. Theo then realizes Mari is missing and watches her run into the house. He runs after her over Beckett's objections. He sends Travis in after them. Shortly after that, there's an explosion from the house. Ben has to hold Vic back as she tries to run into the house.
Beckett radios in to Travis and Theo. After a few minutes, they reply that they're in the basement, trapped but uninjured.
Eli says Andy doesn't understand, because she's a firefighter. People need that, but people need what he does, too. He asks what it'll take for her to back off and let him do his thing. Andy tells him to slide down the pole and she'll back off, because that's what firefighters do. Eli does so before Andy can tell him she's joking. He falls off the pole and hits the wall. She slides down after him and tells him his shoulder is dislocated and he's lucky it's not worse. She reduces the dislocation and says they need to put ice on it.
Beckett gives orders as they prepare to rescue Theo, Travis, and Mari.
Inside, Travis tries to calm Mari down as she apologizes. He gives her some of his air. She says they put everything into the house and raised their daughter there. They moved Julio's parents in when his dad got sick. She wanted something to pass down. Travis tells her to keep the mask on her face. Theo searches for an exit. The houses were all built at the same time, so it's similar to the house he lived in, so he knows there should be a window there. He finds it, but there are bars covering it. He radios out to Beckett to tell him. Theo breaks the glass and they get Mari up to the window to get fresh air.
Dixon finds Ross and gives her a drink he says all the pretty ladies are dinking. She has a meeting to get to. He says he's happy about how the meeting went. Then he says the fire union hasn't decided who to endorse for mayor yet and he'd like her support, which he knows would sway things his way. She says she can always be counted on to do the right thing, even to the man who nearly got her tased. He tells her he'll see her tonight.
Diane asks Maya how she feels. Maya, who is on the couch under a blanket, says she's mortified. She barely knows Diane and she snotted all over her. Other than that, she feels shaky and raw. She's surprised to realize her ankle barely hurts. Diane says sometimes physical pain can be attached to part of her that needs attention. In this case, she thinks it's the three year old part of Maya. She asks Maya to tell her more about her cousin's race. Maya says her father hated her cousin for losing. When she was winning, he loved her and cheered, but when she lost, he looked so ashamed. She decided she would never lose. Diane says she decided she would never lose so she would keep her father's love, that she'd be worthy of his love. Maya starts to cry as she agrees. When you're three, your parents' love is everything. If you're worthy, if your father loves you, you get to stay alive. Ever since Maya was demoted, ever since she started "losing," the three year old part of her has been desperate for her attention, telling her to stop losing, trying to save her life. It's the three year old who can't stop running and won't let her sleep and pushed everyone away when they tried to tell her she had to stop. Maya says she misses her wife and she loves her. She asks Diane what to do. Diane says she needs to tell the three year old she's allowed to rest and that Maya loves her and has her no matter what. She doesn't live with Daddy anymore, so she's safe and lovable, win or lose.
Vic has them move back so she can cut the bars.
Andy puts a sling on Eli and tells him what he did was just stupid, but he has 72 hours of her laying off him and Travis. She tells him to resist saying anything. She sees the look on his face and says it's common for people who get rescued to fall in love with they rescuers. The feeling will pass. She tells him how to care for his shoulder and the swoons.
Diane asks Maya if she's ready. Maya is not because she finds it very embarrassing. Diane reminds Maya that she once told Diane she thinks about dying so she can rest. That's because three year old Maya feels that if she rests, she's unlovable. Diane tells Maya she's in awe of the three year old Maya was. She was so smart and observant and she figured out how to stay alive. She's worthy of Maya's love and care and a little bit of embarrassment. Maya says it's not just a little bit. Diane asks if Maya needs to stop. They can stop for the day. Maya shakes her head no. Diane asks Maya to picture little Maya. Maya holds out her arms and pictures her holding herself. She tells her little self that she loves her no matter what, that she's lovable even when she loses.
Vic finishes cutting the bars.
Maya holds her three year old self.
They get Mari out of the basement.
Maya kisses her three year old self on the head.
Once Mari is out, they get Theo and Travis out. Vic hugs Theo.
Maya continues holding herself.
Mari is reunited with Lupe and Julio.
Maya and Diane both cry.
Theo brings Mari her family's bible as she's loaded into the aid car. She thanks him. Tomás tells Theo he's just like his dad. Theo says he's just doing his job.
Beckett says Theo's on desk duty for the rest of shift and next time he fails to follow orders, he'll be written up. Theo says he went in to save a civilian. He and Beckett argue over it. Beckett says next time, he'll transfer Theo instead of just reprimanding him. Andy asks what happened and Theo says no one has any respect for Beckett and it seems like he's finally noticing.
Diane says Maya did beautiful work today. There's more work to be done and they'll work together once a week for the next few months to do that. But Maya can ease back into desk duty if her medical team blesses it. Maya says she wants to call her wife and asks if she can call Carina and tell her she's sorry. Diane says she can do whatever she wants, but she asks how much Maya has slept in the last two weeks. Maya guesses about sixteen hours. Diane says she's probably put her wife through a lot and Diane advises her to take care of herself first, see if she can rest a little first. Maya says she loves Carina, but realizes she needs to love herself first. Diane loves it when people learn. She leaves, saying she'll see Maya next week. Maya thanks her and closes the door. She grabs her phone and hovers over the button to call Carina, but then closes the contact, revealing a picture of them on their wedding day. She doesn't call.
Ben checks on Vic, who is sitting in the locker room in a towel. He offers to lend an ear if Vic wants to talk or needs a break. Vic thanks him. He walks away and Theo comes in ranting about Beckett. The call has triggered him. Vic is shocked and says she's triggered and Theo didn't notice. It might be her fault because she doesn't let on because if she lets anything past the dam she's built, she'd flood the station. Theo could have died today and so could have Travis. Her boyfriend and her best friend. If something had happened to either of them ... she always feels like she has to take care of people, but she can't do that and be the widow again. She says sometimes she needs a nurse. Theo holds her and she starts to calm down. Travis comes in and Vic calls him to join their hug.
Dixon gives a speech in front of City Hall, taking credit for de-escalating the situation with Jamal. He assures everyone the fire and police departments will continue to work together. Ross takes the podium next and she starts to echo Dixon, but then hesitates. She says Jamal was able to go home to his mother despite being profiled by police while walking home carrying nothing but baking supplies. He's alive today because Crisis One was on the scene and that's why Crisis One is an essential service for the city.
At the station, Ben, Travis, Theo, Vic, Sullivan, and Andy watch the press conference on the news. She offers for any and all police officers in the city to complete the Crisis One training and says she hopes they take her up on her offer. The firefighters are pleasantly surprised.
Andy comes into Beckett's office. She tells him she actually likes him and thinks he's a good captain when he wants to be. She asks why he's antagonizing the people on the team. She heard about the explosion. She says sometimes there isn't time to wait for captain's orders. Beckett says what Theo did could get someone killed. Andy says they need a North Star. She says her dad used to take the team camping. Beckett says he's never going to be like her father. Andy says whatever his leadership style is, he should do more of that. Beckett says whatever he does, they all criticize him, so he might as well be the monster they think he is. He tells her to get out. Once she's gone, he closes the blinds and starts drinking again.
Sullivan comes into Ross's office. She objects to him being there, but he says he has files and they'll leave the door open and the lights on. He'll stay on his side of the desk and give her the files one by one because he knows how hard what she did was and he didn't want her to be by herself. She says she's a soldier and she falls in line, but she couldn't do that. She kept picturing Jamal and couldn't fall in line. Now she's made an enemy of Michael Dixon for all of them. He says she did, but she got it right. He continues handing her files.
Maya sleeps in her bed, holding little Maya.

House Fire[]
Station 19 was called out to 1503 Aldred Road, which was on fire. They arrived and quickly found that the fire was off the kitchen. They found Mari and Julio were trying to evacuate Julio's mother. They stepped in and got her out, along with Mari and Julio, while they started fighting the fire. Mari said the family Bible was still in the basement of the house. Theo said he'd go in and get it, but Beckett said he couldn't go in even though the fire was contained to two rooms. When Mari ran in, Theo and Travis followed her. Shortly after their entry, there was an explosion in the house. They survived the blast uninjured, but were trapped in the house's basement. The stairwell was collapsed and the opposite direction was on fire, leaving them trapped. Theo found an egress window on the north side of the house, but there were security bars covering it, forcing them to cut the bars to free them. Once she was freed, they got Mari into an aid car to go to the hospital and put out the fire.
