“ | On average, a healthy person can hold their breath for up to a minute. After that, carbon dioxide in your blood starts to dramatically rise. Eventually, a reflex is triggered and if you resist the urge to let it all out, you pass out. And you don't know all the damage you could've caused. If you do the work, you can train yourself to hold anything inside without negative consequences. But most people don't have that discipline or time. They just bury it inside and hope it stays there. Don't do it. Let it out. Be loud. Make everyone hear you. Because if you don't, it will eat you up inside. | ” |
If Walls Could Talk is the first episode of the twenty-first season and the 431st overall episode of Grey's Anatomy.
Short Summary[]
After firing some of Grey Sloan's best, Catherine continues to interfere with Meredith and Amelia's research. Accidents at a climate change protest bring unique cases to the hospital, and Bailey encounters a blast from the past.
Full Summary[]
Catherine tells the interns she could have all of them replaced tomorrow. Then Bailey steps forward and asks if Catherine could replace her so easily. Catherine says she's fired many doctors in her career. She agrees that the interns can stay and Bailey's salary will pay for the lawyers to fix their mistakes. Catherine tries to dismiss her, but Bailey refuses to let her job taken by someone operating on spite and greed. All Catherine sees is money. Catherine says Bailey's leadership is costing her money. Bailey asks when was the last time Catherine was actually in an OR, saving a life. Catherine bites back and they volley insults as they move to stand face-to-face. Bailey refuses to be fired. Catherine says Bailey's just another doctor and Bailey slaps her.
Bailey wakes with a start. Ben comes in and asks if she had the dream again. He asks what happened this time and Bailey tells him she slapped Catherine.
Climate protesters are blocking a bridge. Link looks at them from his car door and tells Jo they've shut the whole bridge down, so they'll be stuck there for a while. Jo fans herself, but denies that anything is wrong. Jo tells him she has something to tell him, but before she can say it, a protestor dumps a bucket of trash on Link's car. Jo is upset, but Link likes what the protestors are doing. Link talks about climate change and its effects.
Behind Jo and Link, Mika, Simone, and Benson are also stuck in traffic. Mika sees Benson looking at his phone and asks him who he's stalking. He says no one, so Mika reminds them all that Lucas has to give his decision that day. Benson asks why he wouldn't go and Mika says it's because of Simone. She thinks Lucas would change his mind if Simone told him how she feels. Mika gets frustrated with the jam and asks if they can be let through because they compost.
Amelia asks Meredith where Simms Memorial is. Meredith thinks it's Spokane. They want Amelia to work for them. Meredith continues packing as Amelia says it's in Eugene, Oregon. It would be a commute, but she needs a job. Meredith hates that she has to look. A process server comes to Meredith. She tries to deny being herself, but he says her picture's in the hallway. He has an injunction from the Fox Foundation. If she doesn't respond, she could be held in contempt of the court. She throws it right in the trash. Amelia pulls it out, saying she doesn't want to go to jail. Meredith checks her phone and says NYU pulled their funding. They're the second institution to do so. Amelia asks what they're going to do. Meredith says they're going to keep packing.
Catherine tells her assistant, Ingrid, that she still doesn't have notes from Thursday and needs someone to find her cell phone. She finds Jackson waiting for her in her office and asks how London was. He says when she told him about Meredith, she didn't mention firing Teddy and Owen. She adds Amelia and Bailey to that list, but says she kept the interns, because Richard reminded her they'd lose federal funding for the program if they cut all of them. If the surgeons can't respect the foundation, they shouldn't be working for them. Jackson asks if she's at least tried to talk to Meredith. Catherine says she wouldn't talk to Meredith if they were the last two people on Earth. He asks her about the research, which is extremely promising. She says they're not done with it and they'll use lawyers to get all of it back.
At Elena Bailey Clinic, Bailey finds Ben at the desk, where he's volunteering for her. She knows it's not what he had in mind when he quit the fire department, but he's there to support her. And he has an interview with the residency director at Seattle Pres. She asks about Grey Sloan and he says he's not applying to any Fox hospitals. He doesn't trust Catherine and Bailey wants to slap her. Ben also heard that the new residency director is starting today. Bailey says that's good. She's in her clinic. She has more time for the kids and more time to pursue research. She wishes the new person luck, which they'll need.
The interns are changing in the locker room. Things are awkward between Mika and Jules. Mika asks Jules is nervous about their new boss, but Jules isn't. Simone asks Lucas about his deadline. He has until the end of the day. He hasn't decided yet. Sydney Heron comes in and introduces herself. She's their new residency director. She tells them she did her residency at the hospital and asks who's ready to heal with love. They ask about assignments and getting on the move, but Sydney wants to get to know them as people and sits down to talk.
Levi comes up behind Link and Jo and starts to congratulate them about the baby, only for Jo to signal she hasn't told him. Levi instead pretends he was talking about getting out of the traffic jam. When Link learns that Levi rides a bike, he says Levi's with him today before leaving. Jo tells Levi she's been trying to tell Link, but with everyone getting fired, it felt weird to celebrate. Worried about being overheard, they move into a room, where Jo admits to being scared about how he'll react. Levi is unimpressed by her worrying and teases her about it. She teases him about his peds fellowship and then leaves to throw up.
Richard asks Winston about Winston putting his name down for a surgery. He says Winston needs to find someone else. Winston's department is down Altman and he's covering for Owen, but Richard's interim chief. Winston thinks he's avoiding the OR after what happened to Garrett Oates, which Winston says was just a bad outcome, not a sign. Richard says he won't be scrubbing in. Outside in the ambulance bad, they hear a crashing noise. They go outside to find Charlie Scott in the hood of Ian's car. Ian gets out and questions if Charlie is dead.
Jackson comes in. Amelia starts to ask him about an article he wrote, but he's looking for Meredith. He tells Meredith she needs to respond to the paperwork and asks if she has a lawyer. She asks him to tell Catherine to stop sending Cease and Desist orders. Jackson asks what she expected after her abstract broke the field. She says a lot of people want to work with them now because of it. Jackson asks if they know about her illegal activities. He's behind some of the letters himself. She would know that if she'd answered any of his calls or texts.
Richard calls for a crash cart and a gurney as he evaluates Charlie. Lucas is trying to get a pulse. Winston says the fire department is on the way. Charlie moves, establishing that he has a pulse. Richard hears diminished breath sounds bilaterally. Charlie is able to tell them his name and they say they'll get him out of there. Nearby Benson tells Ian he'll be okay, but they need to get him inside. He's worried he's going to be in trouble and admits he doesn't have a license yet. He sneaked out with the car to get boba and got into an accident. Charlie was bungee jumping off a bridge and his cord snapped. As they keep working on Charlie, Richard tells Benson to get Ian inside. Winston has Lucas put a device in Charlie's mouth to open his airway. Richard, having seen Bailey watching, asks Ben how she's doing. Ben says she's okay.
Wanda Gallagher sustained blunt trauma to her neck and was on blood thinner due to a history of DVT. Her daughter, Lacey, is with her. The blunt object she hit was a police baton. Lacey is upset that Wanda was resisting arrest after protesting even though she promised she was done with all that after Lacey bailed her out last year for vandalism. Wanda denies resisting arrest. She was just trying to separate herself from the disrupters and the vandalism was a misunderstanding. Sydney admires Wanda's passion. Mika recommends labs and a cervical CT just to be safe. Lacey is concerned with how serious it sounds, but Wanda's more worried about the environment and the world her grandchild will be born into. It's a far cry from when Lacey was growing up, when Wanda worked for an oil company. Lacey leaves to call Michael to tell him what happened.
Bailey grabs a tablet off a counter and starts to use it. Jo, who is sitting at the desk, greets her and asks if she's back. Bailey says no and refuses to tell Jo what she's doing. She asks about the new residency director, but Jo hasn't seen them yet and leaves to throw up again. Bailey hears Jules talking to Sydney behind her and realizes in horror who it is. She tries to leave, but Sydney stops her and hugs her. Sydney thinks this will be fun and tells Jules that they were residents together. Bailey takes a page to leave. Sydney loves Bailey's Clinic. She couldn't imagine being out of the OR herself, but if it works for Bailey, that's great.
Jackson tells Meredith all the things he did for her, including hiring Nick. Meredith says Nick could have gotten a job without him. He says Meredith and Catherine are more alike than they think. She broke a lot of rules herself, but did so strategically. Meredith says she doesn't have time for games and tells Jackson to give Owen, Teddy, and Amelia their jobs back. She'll shared a percentage of her shares in the hospital and pay Jackson back. He says it's not about money. She knows how many people are waiting for help and progress takes money. Money the foundation has. Meredith asks what he wants. He says she needs to apologize.
They have Charlie in the ER. He has numerous injuries from his fall. They need to put in chest tubes and scan his whole body. Richard tries to excuse himself, but Winston says Charlie has multiple traumatic injuries. They need all hands on deck. Charlie's missing a finger and Link sends Lucas to find it.
Benson tells Ians his heart rate is elevated. Ian says the last time he took the car out, he dented the bumper and got grounded for two weeks. He's worried they'll never trust him to drive again after this. Benson says Ian shouldn't have been driving without a license, but he didn't cause the accident. It was just an accident. He starts to work on the glass in Ian's hand as Ian asks if he knows what it's like to be in that situation. Benson asks if he's called his parents. Ian's phone is still in the car and he can't go back there.
Simone tells Wanda it'll be a while before she can get her CT because the protest brought in many victims. Wanda talks about her relationship with Lacey, which was strained by Wanda not being around a lot when she was a child. She quit working at the oil company ten years ago and has been an activist ever since. After the eighth oil leak, she decided she couldn't keep writing statements for them. If they really cared, they'd stop spilling oil. She spends her life fighting and now her daughter won't let her meet her grandchild. She asks if she has time to go to the bathroom before her scan and Simone offers to show her where it is.
Bailey rants as she gathers supplies. Ben tells Bailey her patient has arrived. Bailey continues ranting about Sydney. Ben is confused. Bailey tells him about Bailey taking over her interns while she was pregnant and how that affected them. And then Bailey stayed at the hospital while Sydney took a job in Florida. Ben reminds Bailey that she has the clinic and her research, but she's not amused.
Richard is surprised to see Levi working with them as he's been so focused on pediatric surgery. Levi says he might be changing his mind about that, but Richard warns him about being unfocused. Charlie starts bleeding from his chest tube. Richard says to take Charlie straight to the OR and he'll page Winston.
Lacey says there are two cops who want to talk to Wanda. Simone says after she's done in the bathroom, they're taking her to radiology and then the cops can talk to her. Lacey asks if Wanda's labs came back. Mika says her blood is clotting too slowly, so they're going to admit her and she's going to need to speak to her primary physician about her blood thinners. Lacey says her mom is more concerned with her activism than her own health. Lacey realizes Wanda's been in the bathroom a long time and goes inside herself. Wanda isn't in there. They realize she went into the ceiling.
Meredith goes to Catherine's office. She starts talking, but Catherine turns and collapses, forcing Meredith to render aid.
Benson goes out to the car to find Ian's phone. Lucas is already there looking for Charlie's finger. They start to bicker and Lucas asks Benson about Molly. Benson finds the phone and leaves.
Simone tells Lacey they're trying to figure out where Wanda might have gone, but maintenance won't allow anyone else in the ceiling. Lacey asks what the protocol is, but they don't have a protocol for this. Sydney steps in and tries to keep Lacey calm, wanting to avoid the onset of labor. She promises they'll find Wanda and has Lacey sit down. As they walk away, Sydney expresses relief that Lacey didn't go into labor. She tells Mika and Simone what to do next and they're surprised they're not getting yelled at. Once she's gone, they admit the preferred the yelling.
Levi doesn't understand how these protests will help with climate change. Richard talks about civil rights protestors doing the same things. Levi apologizes. They can't find the source of Charlie's bleeding. Richard suggests checking the subclavian. Richard wants to make a new incision, but Winston doesn't want to do that and goes another way instead. He can't get visualization, so he has to change to Richard's plan.
Catherine wakes up in a hospital bed. Meredith tells her she has Budd Chiari Syndrome. She has a blood clot in her hepatic vein and IVC because of her cancer. Catherine asks if she called Jackson or Richard. She says not yet. Meredith wants to start Catherine on heparin and run some labs to see if she's a candidate for a TIPPS Procedure. Catherine tells her to do the heparin only. She won't do any invasive treatments. Meredith warns her of the possible consequences, but she doesn't care. Meredith ask if she knows about her tumor. Catherine says she does but Richard and Jackson don't and Meredith can't tell them.
Lucas offers to help Simone look for Wanda. Simone says she gets it, why Lucas wants to go to Chicago. She tells him he should go. Mika comes up with a broom saying security thinks she went south. The interns talk about Wanda and about Sydney, whom they don't like. Benson blames Lucas, but Lucas says he never asked Bailey to do that. They split up to keep looking for Wanda.
Simone enters a room and finds Bailey taking supplies. Bailey knows no one will miss it. Simone tells her about Wanda, but it's not Bailey's problem anymore. Simone says it should be. She wants Bailey to fight for her job. Suddenly, they hear Wanda, who is asking for help.
Mika says security is on their way as Jules, Simone, and Bailey move shelves to get to Wanda, who is behind the wall. Wanda got nervous when she heard cops were there and ended up falling. It's getting hard for her to breathe. Simone and Mika explain her injuries to Bailey. They're worried about an expanding hematoma cutting off her airway. They hear a noise and Wanda stops responding. They look for things to break through the wall. Bailey starts hitting it.
Catherine tells Meredith she doesn't have to watch her. Meredith offers to get Jackson to do it instead. She says Richard should know soon. Catherine says she'll tell them when she's ready to tell them. Meredith doesn't believe her. They debate over Meredith operating. Catherine says it's so much work to plan for your own death. Not just arrangements, but getting right with yourself. She tells Meredith to keep her mouth shut. If she doesn't, they'll never get their jobs back. Catherine says she's blackmailed people over less.
Bailey makes a hole in the wall. Jules has a crash cart. Bailey can see Wanda, who is unconscious. Maintenance arrives and takes over on the wall.
Ian asks if Charlie is okay. Benson says he can check. Then he talks about all the events coming up in his life. He doesn't think he can do those things if Charlie dies. Benson says he can. It'll suck for a while, but he can do it. It sounds cold, but that's life. Benson notices Charlie's finger in Ian's hood.
They get Wanda onto a gurney. She has a pulse. They have to decompress the hematoma before they can intubate. Bailey opens her neck to do that.
They find Charlie's injury and stop the bleeding. Winston wants Richard to stitch it. He insists. Richard takes the instruments and then passes them off to Levi. Lucas brings in the finger, but it's too late to re-attach it.
Bailey updates Sydney on Wanda's condition. Sydney takes over, saying she has it from there as they leave Bailey in standing in the hallway.
As they scrub out, Link says he's sorry about Levi's ABSITE. Levi realizes Jo told him. Link tries to use a sports reference to console Levi, but Levi doesn't understand, so Link uses Quidditch instead to explain that Levi can try other things to be successful. Levi says he's going to be a good dad. Link says he already is and Levi says that's what he meant.
Outside Charlie's room, Benson asks Lucas if they were able to re-attach the finger. Lucas says no, it was too late. Benson tells Lucas that Molly saved him. After everything with his mom, he was drowning in grief. She pulled him out. One day, they fought. She drove away. She was hit by a reckless driver. And then he was a stranger to her. And he couldn't stay. Lucas says he's sorry. Benson is sorry, too.
Lacey comes to see Wanda. Mika says Wanda's going to be okay. Lacey tells Wanda she almost got herself killed again. Wanda doesn't want to talk about it. Lacey says that's her way. She'll scream at CEOs about fossil fuels, but can't talk to her own daughter. She's trying to make up for what she did in the past, but that should include Lacey. If she wants a relationship with her granddaughter, she should start with Lacey, who wanted a relationship with her mother. Lacey leaves.
Simon tells Bailey that Wanda's surgery was straight-forward and she's in the ICU. Sydney let her close. Bailey says she did fight. Her putting her job on the line for them was her fighting. It wasn't Simone's fault and she can't carry that burden.
Winston is in the skills lab. Richard comes in and Winston says he wants to go over Charlie's surgery step by step. Richard's worried something went wrong, but Charlie is stable. Richard says he doesn't have an assessment in him tonight. Winston says it's for him. He is so specialized that when something went wrong outside his field, he couldn't back up and see the whole picture. He wants Richard to talk him through it. Richard says surgery was taught very differently when he trained. It could take a while. Winston has all night.
Sydney finds the interns and tells them to get some rest and she'll see them tomorrow. Benson needs a drink and asks if the others want one. Lucas has to make a call. Once they're alone, Mika tells Jules she doesn't want to get stuck in a wall. Jules asks if that means they have to talk about what happened, what almost happened. Mika thinks they were just upset because a patient died. They were just trying to feel better. Mika asks if they can be friends. Jules takes her hand and then pulls her in for a kiss. After a few moments, they break apart and Jules leaves.
Levi tells Jo she has to tell Link about the pregnancy. Jo says she's been throwing up all day. Levi thinks they need a code for when she's getting too graphic. Jo wants Levi to be sad like her, but he's busy thinking about his new path. He leaves and Link comes to sit with Jo. She pushes the fries and wine away from her and Link realizes she's pregnant. She confirms it and he hugs her.
Benson leaves the hospital and finds Molly Tran sitting on the bench. He tells her his shift is over, but someone else can help her. She tells him she's spent the last few years putting her life back together, so she can learn who she is. But she's always felt like something was still missing. She shows him her phone, which is displaying a picture of Benson and Molly together.
Bailey comes in and tells Ben to apply at Grey Sloan. She built a great program and he deserves to be in it. Meanwhile, she'll be fighting to get her job back.
Simone answers a knock on the door to find Lucas. He kisses her and says he's staying. Then he picks her up.
Amelia asks Meredith how it went. Meredith says it was good. Jackson asks if Meredith talked to Catherine. She says she did. Catherine said Jackson would stop any injunctions and the letters and everyone can have their jobs back. Jackson asks if Meredith is going to continue the research. She says yes, but not at the Foundation. Amelia says Meredith said they could have their jobs. Meredith says yes, and Amelia should take hers in Seattle and the research will go in a different direction.

While they waited for the fire department to come extract him, they started to assess his injuries. He had diminished breath sounds bilaterally and multiple abrasions. They put a tube in his throat to keep his airway open while he was extracted. In the ER, x-rays showed a displaced clavicle fracture, rib fractures, and a buckle fracture to the sternum. He also had bilateral hemothoraces and a hand injury. They placed bilateral chest tubes and took him for a full-body pan-scan. His right index finger had been amputated, to they searched for it to see if it could be attached. He became unstable on his way to CT, so they took him directly to the OR. In the OR, they struggled to find the source of his bleeding. Richard suggested the subclavian vein. They confirmed that and Winston started to attempt a repair, despite Richard saying he needed to make a new incision higher on the chest. After a few moments, he gave up and they prepped to do another incision. Richard allowed Levi to do the repair. Instead, she climbed into the ceiling, as she worried she was going to be arrested. They later found her behind a wall where she had become trapped. She lost consciousness after complaining that it was getting harder to breathe, so they broke through the wall. Once was she was out, they were unable to intubate due to the hematoma, so Bailey opened her neck to decompress it. Quotes[]
- Process Server: Doctor Meredith Grey?
- Meredith: Check the third floor.
- Process Server: Your picture's in the hall.
- Meredith: Not for long.
- Jo: I'm scared of how he's gonna react, and I'm scared of how I'll react to how he reacts.
- Levi: Okay.
- Jo: What?! I don't make fun of your fears. It's literally what our entire friendship is based on.
- Ben: Bed 4's all checked in. Should I tell her that you’ll be there after you take your anger out on these gauze pads?
- Bailey: Her philosophy is "to heal with love." Love does not heal. Science heals. Medicine and trained doctors heal.
- Ben: 100%. What are we talking about?
- Bailey: Richard replaced me with Sydney Heron. Sydney Heron. We were in the same residency class. She took my interns when I was pregnant and slowed them down with positivity and smiles and butterflies.
- Ben: Sounds... evil?
- Bailey: I am the one that got those residents back in shape. I went on to be chief resident and I stayed to be an attending here while she took a job in Florida. Florida!
- Ben: Yeah, but you've got your clinic, your research ideas.
- Bailey: Don't throw my words back at me, Ben Warren.
- Sydney: What they’re trying to say is there is no protocol 'cause this has never happened before. Which is strange because odd things often happen here.
- Catherine: Do you know how much work planning for your own death is? And I'm not just talking about picking out a casket or making out a will. I'm talking about taking stock of your life and making sure you've done everything you wanna do with it. I think about this every day, and when I do, there's two things that I know. My family is perfect, especially my grandbaby, and I'm not ready to sit on the sidelines.
- Meredith: Catherine Fox, you have had an extraordinary career. What more do you want?
- Catherine: What more do you want? The more surgeries and invasive procedures I get, the more they define who I am. I want people to remember my name because of the advances I've made in medicine, for the risks that I've taken to save lives, for the firsts that I have achieved. I would think you of all people would understand that. So keep your mouth shut.
- Meredith: And what if I don't?
- Catherine: Then you and your friends will never get your jobs back.
- Meredith: You're threatening me over your health?
- Catherine: I've blackmailed people over far less.
- Levi: I'm sorry about the planet.
- Link: Sorry about your ABSITE.
- Levi: Damn it, Jo.
- Link: Kyler Murray, ninth overall pick in the 2018 draft by the A's. Top left fielder, but also the number one overall pick for the Arizona Cardinals. Cardinals is football.
- Levi: Okay. Okay, um...
- Link: Take Quidditch. Harry, he's the seeker. But there's no reason he couldn't also be a chaser. They all fly brooms. They all train the same way. He might not even know yet if he has the skills to try a different position.
- Levi: You're gonna be a good dad.
- Link: I already am.
- Levi: That’s what I meant.
- Jo: I almost told him twice today.
- Levi: You have to tell him, I'm not raising this baby with you.
- Jo: Shut up! I’ve been puking all day. It's all gone. All the crackers and fluids and dignity. It's all down the toilet.
- Levi: Okay, we need a safe word for the next nine months for when you get too graphic. Or mean. Like "jelly beans" or "disinfectant" or something. We need to put a limit on how much you can talk.
- Jo: Why are you in a good mood? I need you to be miserable with me. Think about peds.
- Levi: No, I'm gonna think about Quidditch.
- Jo: Huh?
- Levi: I might find a new path. Or not. For all I know, I might be some other specialty's secret weapon.
