In My Tree is the twelfth episode of the fifth season and the 71st overall episode of Station 19.
Short Summary[]
The Dean Miller Memorial Clinic has its opening day. Meanwhile, Sullivan gives Beckett an ultimatum, and the crew responds to a skydiving incident.
Full Summary[]
Jack walks around town, hanging flyers advertising the clinic and passing them out to the unhoused.
Jack showers and looks at himself in the mirror.
At the station, Jack looks at the picture of Dean in the lobby and knows he needs not to suck. He goes into the barn, where everyone else is helping set things up for the clinic. Beckett comes out and gives a lackluster speech about the clinic before going back to his office. Once he's gone, Jack gives his own speech about how important the clinic is for the vulnerable. He thanks them all for their work creating a place where people like he used to be have a voice. Everyone claps.
Jack anxiously waits for patients. He tells Ben it's been an hour and no one has come. Ben assures him that people will come. Ross comes in and poses for some pictures as she congratulates Jack on a great start. She's sure things will pick up soon. The clinic is the first thing she approved as chief, so she needs it to do well.
Travis tells Vic he doesn't think Emmett will ever talk to him again. He wants Vic's help to get Emmett back. He won't pick up the phone or answer the door when Travis goes over.
Theo talks to Andy about the deal she made with Jack. He asks if she can still masturbate and she says yes. It's not like she's marrying God, just freeing up space to think about other things, like what she wants to do with the rest of her life. She hasn't figured that out yet. She calls the team for a lineup and says they'll be taking some of 19's calls becuase their clinic is opening. Maddox says 19 just can't get enough extra work and Andy says they became firefighters to help people, which is foreign to Maddox. Theo tells them all to be ready to go so there are no delays. Andy thanks Theo for his help, but Theo says the team respects her despite what she thinks. He knows Andy would rather be helping with the clinic. Andy says her dad would want her to be there, but Theo says her dad would be proud to see her supporting two stations.
Tabitha Salzman walks into the clinic and says she's there to speak to Ben on a personal matter. Sullivan calls Ben over. Tabitha introduces herself as the Guardian Ad Litem appointed by the court. She's there to observe him at work. He says it's not a great day, but she says it's a perfect day. She'll watch him and take notes for her report. He doesn't think his work at the station is relevant to his parenting but she disagrees. She tells him just to ignore her.
Carina asks what studies Maya is referring to and Maya says everything she's ready said it's better to be upfront with the child about how they came to be a family. That way there are no surprises or unanswered questions. You can even custom design your own children's book to tell your child who their donor is. Carina's also read all the studies, but knowing the person has its own set of complications. Maya says it's not more than not knowing the person. She would rather know the source of the complications. Carina gets paged. She has a patient in premature labor, so she has to leave. Jack tries to stop her, but she says they don't have any patients at the clinic while she does have a patient at the hospital. She assures him he'll be fine. Jack spots Ross watching him.
Sullivan finds Beckett icing his eye in the beanery. Sullivan asks if it was a bar fight, but Beckett doesn't answer. Sullivan tells him about an AA meeting in a nearby church. Beckett says offering him something he doesn't need won't keep him quiet about Sullivan and Ross. Sullivan says there are no rules against him and Ross sharing a meal. Beckett says there's no rule against a man slipping and falling after hours either and leaves.
Jack is on the phone with Andy, panicked because they have no patients, the Chief is watching, and Carina left. Andy tells him it's the first day, but he's worried it'll be the last. He's glad Dean's not around to tell Jack to take his name off such a failure. Andy reminds him that Crisis One wasn't an immediate success. But then it got better and Dean trained everyone else. Jack then asks Andy was constitutes sex in regards to their pact. She tells him not to bail on her because he's feeling sorry for himself. She tells him he'll get there and hangs up the phone.
Andy goes out to see Aquino, who is still recovering, but has come for a visit. He says his recovery is progressing faster than the doctors expected, so he will be back in about six weeks and came for a visit. The rest of them get called out.
Jack says it's a PRT-level disaster becuase they still have no patients. Tabitha overhears that and asks Ben about the PRT. As Ben tries to explain, Jack tells how it was hijacked for drugs. Ben says it was an asset to the city. Jack sees a man entering the station and is glad to see they finally have a patient. Jack welcomes him in, but he says never mind and starts to leave. Jack stops him and convinces him to stay, saying they can help. He leads him to the first exam room, saying he's their first customer, which should come with a prize.
Andy thinks things will return to the old boys' club once Aquino returns to the station. Theo asks if she wants to fight for her spot. Andy says she always knew it was temporary, but Theo says she earned it. Andy won't poach Aquino's house. Theo says he's been there a long time and it's always been a boys' club. The team is more of a family under her leadership, so it's worth fighting for.
Travis suggests things he could do to win Emmett back. Vic suggests just telling the truth. Travis decides to call Emmett again, but gets his voicemail. He leaves a message asking him to talk. Jae-Jin Park enters the barn and asks, in Korean, if he's at the clinic. Travis uses broken Korean to talk to him and leads him to an exam room.
Station 23 arrives to find Sam stuck in a tree after skydiving. A cross-fit dude says he can get her down, but Andy tells him no. Andy orders the team to get the ladder in place and get the crowd away from the tree. Sam wakes up and starts to panic. Andy can see that she's impaled on some branches and bleeding. Sam calls for help.
Jack introduces himself and asks for the man's name. The man says he's Hank. Jack notices Hank scratching his knee and asks if he can take a look. Jack examines his legs, then gives him body shampoo, which is used to get rid of lice and scabies. He gives Hank instructions, but then realizes Hank doesn't have anywhere he can go to apply it. He asks Hank to come upstairs with him, saying he needs the clinic to be a success and Hank would be doing him a favor if he came upstairs. He sees Ben and asks Hank to wait for a minute. Jack tells Ben that Hank has scabies, as Ben suspected, and he's taking him upstairs, despite the risk. Jack says Hank came to get help and he should be able to get help with his dignity intact. They can't make him undress in the barn. Ben says if Carina asks, he doesn't know anything. Jack has Hank follow him as Ben goes to tend to a young man, Aston, who has come in with his mother. She says her son needs help. Ben takes him to an exam bay.
Andy calls up to Sam and tells her they're going to get her down. Sam is worried she's going to fall. Andy asks Deja to call the hospital and let them know they're coming as soon as they get her down. She's going to need blood. Sam is in pain. Maddox has the ladder set, so Andy tells him to be careful not to move anything more than they have to. Maddox and Theo go up to start cutting her free. Andy tells Sam they're going to go slowly and asks if she wants them to call anyone to keep her company. She says no, she just wants to get down. Andy tells her to keep still and they'll get her down soon.
Ross comes into the gym where Maya is running on the treadmill. When Maya sees Ross, she nearly falls off. The clinic was slow, so she's taking the time to get a run in. Ross says they're past due for their sit-down. She knows Maya's eager to hear if her captaincy will be restored. Ross says they can meet Tuesday.
Travis talks to Jae-Jin in English about his mom, who is from Korea, but traveled all over due to her father's work. He feels stupid for speaking in English. He tries Korean, but has trouble with the app he's using to translate Jae-Jin's words. Ross overhears Travis's struggles and steps in, asking Jae-Jin in Korean about his symptoms. He tells her that he's losing weight despite no change in his diet, plus he's tired all the time and his legs are swollen.
Tabitha watches from a distance while Ben prepares to drain an abscess on Aston's arm. Aston asks if it'll hurt, but Judy says he wasn't so afraid of needles when he was using them to do heroin. Judy has spent the last year on dialysis trying to save her life while he was destroying his. As a cancer survivor, Ben understands the toll any serious illness can take on a family. Judy asks if it was retaliation. Judy and Aston argue about her dialysis and how it affected him seeing her like that. Ben tells them to stop yelling.
Travis looks at Jae-Jin's legs, which are very swollen and tight. He and Ross step out and she notes that her dad's legs looked just like that when he had stage 4 cancer. They're not sure what their next steps are, as they can't treat cancer at the clinic. Travis suggests asking Ben, but then Jae-Jin's son, Justin, comes in, saying his father left the house without telling his wife where he was going. She found a flyer for the clinic on his dresser. Travis calls Justin out of the bay and explains to him that his father needs to go to the hospital. Justin says they already know he has cancer.
Sam says she's done the same jump 100 times, but this time, her chute didn't open, so she fell straight down.
On the ground, Andy leaves Theo in charge so she can make a phone call.
Sam sees the blood and asks if she's going to die. Theo tells her the branches are stopping most of the bleeding, which is why they can't just pull her down.
Andy asks Ben to get the PRT, as she knows it's the only way to save Sam's life. He says he can't because he can't get it authorized and staffed and Tabitha is watching his every move.
Sam starts to panic and it gets even worse when Maddox drops his saw. Deja offers to go up, but Andy says she needs to get face-to-face with Sam. She starts to climb.
Jack explains to Hank what he's going to do after Hank has undressed and his clothes have been bagged up. He rubs the cream on Hank's body.
Maya and Sullivan are sitting on the roof and she asks him how he knows the chief. Sullivan tries to deny it, but Maya knows. And she needs to know how to win Ross over because they're finally meeting about her demotion. Sullivan says he doesn't know anything, but Maya reminds him that getting her captaincy back means they get rid of Beckett. Sullivan admits they were friends a long time ago, but hadn't seen each other in fifteen years. He says the promotion was because he earned it, not because of their relationship. Maya agrees and thinks he might be the only person at the station who understands her ambition. They can help each other out here. She'll make sure no one else figures out their secret if he tells her how to win Ross over.
Travis offers Justin resources, but Justin says they're past that. His cancer is inoperable. They haven't told him because if he knows he's dying, he'll feel like a burden and will withdraw, but they want to enjoy the time they have left with him. It's a lie out of love. Travis says he knows they're hiding something and he deserves the truth. He tells his father that they said he needs to get outside more and takes him home. Ross and Travis agree that they need to call their moms.
Aston and Just continue their argument. They're both struggling watching each other struggling. Ben tells Aston he needs to stop using drugs because they will kill him. He has a chance to live if he goes to rehab. Judy starts crying and hugs Aston. Ben says he'll get them the information.
As Ben exits the room, he knocks over a tray. He tells Vic Tabitha has been hovering all day, but wasn't around when he finally did something right. Plus he couldn't help Andy save a life because of the red tape. Just as he angrily states that he hates red tape, Tabitha re-appears.
Andy gets up next to Sam and secures herself. She starts talking to Sam, reassuring her. Sam says she's a waitress and she doesn't want to die a waitress. She was supposed to be a journalist, but she was too afraid. The skydiving was to build up courage to try, but she never got there and now someone who did try is going to write a story about her. Andy tells Sam she's brave. Theo says they're almost done cutting her free. Just then, Sam loses consciousness.
Andy and Theo get Sam onto a stretcher and Andy starts compressions, which she continues as they transport her to the ground.
Jack cuts Hank's hair.
Andy continues compressions as they load Sam onto a gurney.
Jack shaves Hank's face.
They load Sam into the aid car.
Hank takes a shower.
Andy climbs into the aid car with Sam.
Jack finds a jacket for Hank to wear.
The aid car starts its trip to the hospital. Andy continues compressions.
Hank comes out, clean and wearing the clothes Jack found for him. Jack says says he looks handsome and tells him he can come back as often as he wants. Hank says it's been a long time since he saw his face clean-shaven, since his wife died. She died six years ago. He tells Jack about the porcelain animals she had lined up. He used to turn them around to mess with her, but when she died, he left them there. He didn't have the heart to do much of anything after that. No one has looked at him and seen him in six years until today. He thanks Jack for that. Jack leads him out of the bathroom.
Sullivan asks Ross out to dinner, but she says they need to cool it because they almost got caught. After Ross walks away, Beckett offers to find the two of them a bunk. Maya then comes and tells Beckett he has a phone call, which he leaves to answer. Maya reminds Sullivan of her proposition and he agrees to help. Ross hates a suck-up.
Travis suggests that he could try skywriting, but Vic says that's a terrible idea. He wonders what if it's kinder to lie to someone. Vic asks if he means like his dad did to his mom. Travis says he's a judgy, self-righteous hypocrite. That's his truth. Maybe he doesn't deserve Emmett taking him back. Vic says it's okay if he doesn't want that. Maybe he already told Emmett the truth.
Ross compliments Jack for how he worked with Hank. Jack's bummed that they only had 12 patients, but it'll pick up. Ross says those 12 patients had their lives changed and might go on to save other lives. What he did isn't a small thing and it'll build up. She's impressed.
Ben defends himself to Tabitha as she types up her notes. Tabitha says what she saw was a man who works hard and cares deeply, a good person who is likely a good person. She'll give them the clearest picture possible, but she's been doing this for years and warns him that the court strongly favors biological family. She has a lot of say, but she doesn't have the final say.
Jack asks Carina about the delivery and she says it went well. She also heard he did well at the clinic. He thinks he actually did, but she tells him he doesn't have to sound so surprised by that. He is surprised because he didn't think he could do it. He thought it would fail until it didn't. Carina says a tiny part of her will always hate him for sleeping with Maya, but working on the clinic with him has let her see the man he really is. Jack asks if that means she kind of likes him. She denies it and warns him not to tell Maya.
Emmett walks up to Travis and tells him to stop calling and texting, that he never wants to speak to Travis again. Travis stops him from leaving and apologizes, explaining how his situation with his father affected how he treated Emmett. Emmett says Travis doesn't respect him and he can't respect himself if he dates Travis. He tells Travis not to call him again.
Sullivan goes to Beckett's office and tells Beckett about the worst day of his drug use. He convinced himself it was just a rough patch. He doesn't know if Beckett is drinking at work or not, but it's just a matter of time. Sullivan's not trying to blackmail him. He's just trying to save his life. He tells Beckett to come to a meeting. He explains to Beckett how the meetings work and how they make you better. He tells Beckett when the next meeting is when Beckett asks.
Carina asks Maya if co-worker is too close for comfort. Maya says it might be weird, especially after she gets reinstated. Carina asks what if that doesn't happen, but Maya is sure it will. Carina asks if she wants the donor to be in the baby's life. Maya never thought about it like that, but she does like the idea that if something happened to her, Carina wouldn't be on her own. Carina tries to stop her when she mentions how high-stakes her job is. Carina asks if she wants a third parent, but she says she doesn't. He could be like an uncle. Carina tells her that Jack offered, but even he realized it was ridiculous and took it back right afterward. Ben comes in. He's taking to Pru on FaceTime. Maya and Carina say hi. Jack then comes in and says hi as well. Pru tells a joke that Jack pretends he didn't teach her.
Andy finds Ross and tells her that she lost a life she could have saved if the PRT hadn't been shut down by people who avoided lawsuits over saving human lives. Aquino will be returning soon and she wants to go back to station 19 when that happens, because that team is changing things in the city for the better. She was able to make changes at 23 during her time as captain, but the problems there go deeper. 19 is her home. Ross says she just solved a huge problem because Ross finally got to the bottom of McCallister's desk and found a huge budget shortage. She has to shut down a station and Andy just handed her the perfect one. Andy says she didn't mean for that to happen, but Ross says she knows. They'll have dinner next week and talk about how to get Andy back home.

When he realized Hank wouldn't have a private place to apply it, he took Hank upstairs to the station bathroom and applied the cream. He then cut Hank's hair, shaved his beard, and gave him clean clothes to change into.
Jae-Jin Park[]
Jae-Jin came into the clinic. After some initial issues because Travis's Korean was rusty, Ross stepped in and translated that he was losing weight despite no change in his diet, and had fatigue and swelling in his legs. Ross and Travis speculated that he may have advanced cancer, but they didn't know what to do, as they didn't have the ability to diagnose or treat him properly at the clinic. Just then, his son came in looking for him. He explained to Travis and Ross that they knew he had cancer, but hadn't told him as they knew he would hide from them and feel like a burden, and they wanted to enjoy the time they had left with him.
Sam[]
Sam was skydiving and became impaled in multiple places when her parachute malfunctioned. Station 23 responded to the call and used the ladder to send Theo and Maddox up to her. As they started cutting the branches to free her, Andy called Ben to try to get access to the PRT, but he was unable to do so. When Maddox dropped his saw and Sam started to panic, Andy went up to talk to her face-to-face. They finished cutting her free, but she coded. They got her onto a stretcher and Andy started compressions, which she continued as they got her down to the ground and into the aid car. Despite their best efforts, Sam died.
Aston[]
Aston came into the clinic with an abscess on his arm from heroin use. Ben drained and packed the abscess, then referred him to rehab to deal with his dependency.
