James Morgan is the boyfriend of Levi Schmitt and former chaplain at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

History[]

He grew up in Wyoming, an only child with devout Episcopal parents. When he grew up, James spent time traveling the world to get some space from his parents. Then his parents died and he decided to become a chaplain. ("This One's for the Girls")

When Cal Huang, who was fascinated with death after the death of his mother, was hospitalized for back pain after a history of Li-Fraumeni and cancer, James talked to him about death and even helped him plan his own funeral. This caused him to butt heads with Levi Schmitt, who believed James shouldn't be encouraging Cal to think about his own death so much. James persisted anyway and when Levi had to tell Cal he was going to die, James was there and helped console Levi when he found him outside later that night crying. ("Take Me to Church")

James was called in to help again when Winston and Levi had an 82 year old patient, Donna Mae Clarkson, who was a full code. They wanted James to talk to her to ensure she was making the best choice for herself. They explained everything to Donna Mae and she insisted she'd made the right decision for herself because she was determined to outlive her ex-husband. Winston and Levi did some searching and found that her ex-husband had died a few years prior. When they told Donna Mae, she admitted that she was grieving his loss and missed him. Then she signed the DNR. At the end of the day, Levi brought James coffee and biscotti as a thank you. James admitted that he didn't get many matches on the dating apps because of his job. Levi pulled out his phone and attempted to swipe right on James, only to swipe to a shirtless photo of him instead. James told Levi he could just ask him out since they were already sitting together. ("I Can See Clearly Now")

After a shift, Levi and James went to get coffee and then lunch. At lunch, they decided to go back to James's place, where they had sex. They also talked about the connection they felt between them. Later that night, while wandering James's place, Levi found what appeared to be a wedding album. ("This One's for the Girls") James tried to talk to Levi after their hookup, but Levi continuously avoided him until finally, Levi said he knew about Ryan, James's husband. James surprised Levi by saying that Ryan had died nearly four years prior. He believed that James was cheating on Ryan with him. James hadn't dated much and didn't really know how to navigate the topic, but believed what he and Levi had was real and special. ("You Make My Heart Explode")

Levi told James he'd been offered a research position in Texas, but James was paged away before they could talk about it. After spending some time acting as an attending to test out how he liked it, Levi said he thought there might be more left in Seattle for him, meaning both the job and James. ("Night Moves")

When Levi decided to take the position, he and James decided to continue their relationship long-distance, but after considering it, Levi asked if James would move to Texas with him. They arranged to meet in the lobby after work and James missed the meeting because he was meeting with administration to quit his job. He told Levi he'd move to Texas with him and they kissed, then left the hospital together. ("If You Leave")
