Jordan Wright is a surgical resident at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where he was Dr. Nick Marsh's favorite resident. He briefly transferred his residency to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to study under Dr. Miranda Bailey but returned to Minnesota when Grey Sloan's residency program was put on probation.

History[]

Brian's Surgery and Meeting Bailey[]

Jordan scrubbed in, on Nick's request, on Brian Williams' tumor resection. In surgery, Meredith was impressed by his skill and technique. He told her that he knew she'd studied under Bailey. It was his dream to learn from her, but he hadn't matched to Grey Sloan when he applied. After their surgery was completed, Meredith brought Jordan to Seattle with her and introduced him to Bailey, saying he wanted to transfer to Grey Sloan to work under her. ("Today Was a Fairytale")

Work at Grey Sloan[]

On Jordan's first day, he got both regular and decaf coffee and offered them to Bailey, as he didn't know her preference. She declined as she'd already had her morning smoothie, but her husband, Ben, took the caffeinated one. Later, Richard introduced him to the other residents. Jordan asked for a moment to speak and talked about how excited he was to be working under Miranda Bailey. Later, when Richard tried to assign him to a surgey under The Webber Method, he said he really wanted the chance to work with Bailey and so asked to take a rain check on The Webber Method in favor of that. Instead, he operated on the patient with Bailey's assistance. While they were operating, Jordan talked about how he approached surgery and how he wanted to learn from Bailey. She told him her preferences regarding that specific type of surgery and the surgery went well. ("It Came Upon a Midnight Clear")

Helping Levi[]

When Levi Schmitt scrubbed his hands until they bled after losing a patient in surgery, Jordan told him that after his first loss, he went running until his legs gave out under him. He then pulled Levi back away from the sink and carried him to the ER, where they bandaged his hands and coached him on how to come back from it. ("No Time to Die")

Jordan then attended the M&M where the case was reviewed and the doctors tried to figure out how to prevent another such death from occurring. When Bailey called on him and forced him to ask a question, he asked if there was any sign of bleeding prior to the hemorrhage and later asked Richard who was in charge during the surgery, questioning the rotating authority that came with attendings coming in and out. ("Living In a House Divided")

Hamilton's Surgery and Bonding with Bailey[]

When an old friend of Bailey's called her about a job with NASA, Jordan encouraged her to take it, saying it was her chance to work in space and would be a dream come true. She told him it wasn't that simple, because she wasn't in the position to do things based on dreams. She then said he was the one bright spot in her life amid many struggles. He mistook this as romantic interest and leaned into kiss her. She immediately pulled back. He told her he was mistaken and walked away. ("Legacy")

Ivan Sanches and Awkwardness with Bailey[]

After the kiss, Jordan was removed from Bailey's service and apologized several times for the kiss. However, they ended up working together again on Ivan Sanches, who had a python wrapped around his body. At the end of the day, Jordan apologized again, but told her she had given him a signal, whether she had meant to or not. She may not have thought he would see it because she didn't see herself like that, but he saw it because he did see her like that. ("Put the Squeeze On Me")

Laura Eames[]

Jordan was upset to be assigned to Laura Eames while Fernanda Lima was in the hospital for a Ross procedure. However, after Laura's surgery was complete, he was able to catch the end of Fernanda's surgery. ("Road Trippin'")

Kidney Xenotransplant[]

Jordan and the other residents were called to do grand rounds with Nick Marsh and Meredith Grey. They arrived to find Nick with the patient, Mason Taylor, who was brain dead after being struck by a drunk driver. His wife wanted to donate his organs, but UNOS rejected them, so she donated his body for research. Nick explained that they would be transplanting a genetically modified pig kidney into Mason's body in the hopes that they could perfect the technology, which would eliminate the wait for donor organs. He transplanted the kidney near the groin so they had better blood supply and could see the kidney as they waited to see if it would work. After the surgery, they celebrated that the kidney was producing urine. When the kidney later stopped working, Nick had them do a biopsy and sent the residents away to avoid screaming at them. Then he did everything he could to save the kidney, but started to lose faith. Meredith suggested using epinephrine, which worked and Jordan reported that the kidney was working again. ("Put It to the Test")

Program Probation[]

Jordan was called into Bailey's office after the surgical residency program at Grey Sloan Memorial was put on probation. She was meant to make sure he was going to tell the review board nice things about the program, but instead, Bailey told him that Mayo Clinic hadn't filled his spot and she told him to go back, because she worried the program would get shut down and he wasn't guaranteed a replacement spot. ("Should I Stay or Should I Go")

Career[]

He is a fourth-year surgical resident at The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He briefly transferred to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital with the intent of working under and learning from Miranda Bailey, though she sent him back to Minnesota when Grey Sloan's residency program was put on probation. She feared that, if the program were to be shut down permanently, he would be at risk for not finding a program elsewhere and his skills would go to waste.

Notes and Trivia[]

  • He is charming, confident, and ready for a challenge.[2]
  • He sketches every surgery before he does it, including every possible complication and solution.[3] He also draws outside of preparing for surgeries, such as when he drew Amelia and Meredith's groundbreaking surgery on David Hamilton from the gallery.[4]
