Joseph Chase is a general surgeon who was developing a technique to remove tumors thought to be inoperable.
History[]
Joseph Chase was developing a protocol for removing abdominal tumors previously believed to be inoperable. When Miranda Bailey had a patient, Gabby Mims, who had a pancreatic adenocarcinoma that fell into that category, she called him to Seattle to consult on the case. He said he believed he could remove it and they presented the case at grand rounds. Bailey told him she'd chosen Simone Griffith to scrub in with them and he recognized Simone from his own hospital, where he'd pushed for her to be expelled from the program.
Chase told Gabby and her mother that he couldn't promise a good outcome, but he had a high success rate. They took Gabby into surgery, but there was some unexpected bleeding and he realized the tumor had invaded the superior mesenteric artery. He decided to suture the artery and then close. Bailey, upset that he wasn't going to try removing Gabby's tumor, decided to take over and asked Chase to leave. She'd realized that his success rate was so high because he was excluding patients whose tumors he wasn't able to remove.
Career[]
He is an attending general surgeon.
