Joyce Basche was a patient of Miranda Bailey who was the first diagnosed with MRSA.

Dialysis Graft and Infection[]
Bailey and Leah Murphy operated on Joyce to place a dialysis graft. Two weeks later, she was back at the hospital with an infection. She thought it was nothing, but her husband made her come in. She was taken back into surgery to remove her graft, as it had an abscess underneath it. After surgery, Joyce crashed and was unable to be resuscitated. ("She's Killing Me")
CDC Investigation[]
Joyce's body was examined and samples were collected as part of the CDC's investigation into what happened to cause her death. Dr. Bailey was also asked to recite the details of the procedure in an interview. ("Sleeping Monster")
