History[]
Early Life[]
Jules and her brother grew up with their drug-addicted parents. She grew up a little left of normal, learning to roll joints and clear energy fields at 10.
Internship at Grey Sloan[]
Jules was interviewed by a selection committee at Grey Sloan and selected to start out her internship there as part of the hospital's new residency program that was designed to give an opportunity to "diamonds in the rough", doctors who did not match or were fired elsewhere.
The Saturday night before starting out as an intern at Grey Sloan, Jules met Atticus Lincoln at a bar after matching on a dating app and they spent the night together. On her first day, Jules ran into him almost immediately after arriving. He apologized for not having called her like he had told her he would and she reminded him she worked there now. She then tagged along with Mika Yasuda, whom she recognized from the introduction, so they could find scrubs together. As they walked, Jules shared that she had already slept with an attending, a fact that Mika shared with the rest of the interns much to Jules's dismay. After changing into the scrubs, the group of interns were welcomed by interim Chief of Surgery Meredith Grey in the newly equipped OR. She stressed that their life stories and their fight was what had gotten them into the program rather than their grades.
Afterward, Amelia took the interns to the ICU and informed them about a bus driving off a cliff during the tornado, rendering fourteen patients potentially brain dead and thus organ donors. She assigned each intern a patient to examine and confirm brain death. Jules's patient was among the brain dead patients so she had to inform the family. Her patient turned out to be a match for one of Maggie's patient awaiting a heart transplant. Having read Maggie's article about racial disparities in outcomes after bypass surgery, Jules was a fan of hers and eager to inform Maggie. In need of some good news, she asked Maggie if she could be part of the procedure, which Maggie allowed. Together, they informed Howard and his emotional husband about the availability of a donor heart. However, the joy was cut short during the organ retrieval when Maggie deemed that there were too many hematomas on the donor heart for it to be used. She allowed Jules to close the incision under chief resident Levi's supervision. He cautioned her to always be polite to BokHee.
Later, she found Link waiting for her outside the intern locker room and he inquired about her first shift. She told him it seemed endless and was both exhilarating and depressing. He then revealed he brought HR paperwork about their relationship for her to sign so things wouldn't get messy. She clarified they did not have a relationship and that she just considered him a friend. He claimed he didn't want a relationship either but she pointed out he had been waiting for her outside the locker room like a stalker. The interns then met up in the tunnels and reflected on their first shift. They touched upon the fact that each of them was a loser or reject in some way for them to have ended up at Grey Sloan though no one shared any specific details. They were soon paged and rushed back off to work.[2]
Personality[]
Jules was raised by drug addled artist/hippies and somehow emerged as the only real grown-up in the family. Because she always had to take care of herself and her parents, she can be a little bossy – but her heart is always in the right place. She's not afraid to break the rules to save a life, and sometimes it gets her in trouble. She is empathetic and in touch with her emotions.

Later that day, Link met Jules outside the intern locker room and explained that he brought her some HR paperwork for her to sign, stating that their relationship predated her employment at Grey Sloan Memorial. Jules got confused and pointed out that they didn't have a relationship.[2]
When Jules got to scrub in on a below the knee amputation, she saw that Link had written messages on the patient's legs to indicate which leg to cut off. She mistook this for flirting and asked him if he was flirting with her over a sick patient's leg. Link quickly explained that he was being a supportive teacher and didn't want her to cut off the wrong leg.[3]
When Jules needed help recording sexual education videos, she found Link in the pit and asked him if he could help her, but he told her it was inappropriate and said that he didn't want anyone to think that he was harassing her.[4]
Benson Kwan[]
In the locker room after recording the sex ed videos, Benson and Jules shared a quiet and intense look. They then headed to an on call room, where Benson kissed Jules.
