“ | Before they're even scheduled for surgery, every patient asks how long it will take to recover. The implication being, the quicker, the better. Search online and you'll find advice from all kinds of people without medical degrees about how to heal faster. Because most people don't want to hear what we say, which is to rest and let your body heal on its own time. They say patience is a virtue. But it often feels overrated. Especially when we're in pain. When we're recovering from a fractured leg, a bruised ego, a broken heart, all we want is to feel better. Now. We can look for shortcuts to speed things up but more of than not, it's best to let things play out in their own time. It's usually worth the wait. | ” |

Meredith and Nick return to Grey Sloan to treat a liver transplant patient. Meanwhile, Bailey hosts an intern retreat at her home, and Winston and Ben aid an unexpected crash victim.
Full Summary[]
Meredith and Nick are driven to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. They were flown in for a liver transplant on a friend of Catherine. The trip came as a good excuse for Meredith to miss Ellis's fundraiser. Meredith is planning to check on Catherine's shunt. Nick inquires about Richard. Meredith says she didn't operate on him.
Lucas wakes up in Simone's bed as she exits the bathroom. Bailey is hosting an intern retreat today. Jules is still barely acknowledging Simone after throwing her under the bus with Altman. Lucas coaxes her to come back to bed.
Ben is moving furniture around to make room for the retreat. Bailey hopes the interns will need it. Ben heads to work as Altman is watching like a hawk. Danny Ford, the retreat facilitator, arrives. He has worked with Fortune 100 CEO's to at-risk teens.
As Bailey strong-armed her into taking more time off, Jo is spending the day at home. She made breakfast for everyone, including a sandwich of all Link's favorite breakfast foods combined. He takes it to go.
Ben and Winston head out to retrieve a heart for Katie Ramsey. They get on the elevator and run into Skye Williams, who thought she had missed Winston today. Jackie is doing well. Winston explains they are picking up a heart. Skye is glad that she ran into him as it was weird to start her day without seeing him. As she gets off, Ben comments on the vibe between them.
Amelia meets Link and Taryn in the ambulance bay. The rig brings in Marley Frank, 37, who jumped off a 15-foot high bridge into shallow water. She has neck and back pain. Link asks if she hurt herself on purpose. Marley says it wasn't like that. A car arrives with an apparent bridal party. Marley explains that she actually just finalized her divorce and she threw a party. She was throwing her ring into Lake Union when she remembered how expensive it was. The divorce party tried to stop her but failed to do so given they knocked back a few mimosas. Taryn directs the divorce party to the waiting area while Link and Amelia move Marley to trauma room 3.
Meredith and Nick arrive in Tasha Lawson's room as Tasha's wife Evynn Moore and Catherine are discussing a case. Evynn is a former protégé of Catherine's and a leader in penile reconstruction. Richard arrives to greet Evynn and Tasha while ignoring Meredith. Given the complexity of the case, Catherine says Tasha needs a real team. Her bile ducts are scarred from primary sclerosing cholangitis and she also has situs inversus. Tasha thinks they are talking about her sinuses. Evynn says Tasha is a poli-sci professor. Meredith suspects hepatic encephalopathy. Tasha doesn't even know that she needs a new liver. Evynn reminds her that Catherine listed them here and a liver has a finally become available. The Portland hospitals were giving them the run-around. Nick wants to get Tasha's records from the other hospitals but Evynn brought them on a USB drive, stating that Catherine taught her to take care of herself since no one else cares as much. Meredith and Nick leave to prep. Richard goes to leave until Catherine calls him out. Tasha was rejected by two hospitals and when Evynn pushed for her, they questioned her credentials and tried to make her go away. Catherine promised her top-notch doctors and A+ care, so they better set aside whatever is going on between them. Nevertheless, Richard walks off when Meredith suggests they go study the scans.
Ben and Winston are en route to the hospital. Winston doesn't get out much these days. He explains his connection to Skye. He says dating is hard. Whenever his date finds out he is divorced, the conversation shifts as his dates try to figure out why his ex ran. Ben talks about his experience of first dating Bailey.
The interns are enjoying coffee and bagels at Bailey's house. Benson texts Molly a picture. He's excited for her to come back after breaking up with her boyfriend. Simone enters the kitchen and tells Lucas that Jules walked right by her. Jules ignores Simone as she demonstrates how to offer and accept an apology as Lucas bumps into her. Bailey summons everyone to the living room. Jules is forced to sit down next to Simone. Bailey and Danny explain that today is designed to help them become better surgeons. They will start with ice breakers to get to know each other. Jules suggests counting off ones and twos so she can avoid Simone.
Richard begrudgingly joins Meredith as she shows him Tasha's scans. The common hepatic vein should be long enough for a proper anastomosis. Meredith suggests transplanting the liver at 90 degrees to accommodate the situs inversus. Richard barely reacts. Nick comes in. He received pictures from the donor. Richard asks if there are any abnormalities that would prevent them from transplanting it at 180 degrees horizontally. Meredith says they should discuss the plan. Richard thought she doesn't like to discuss cases with him. Nick says he's passing on the liver as it's too big. Evynn won't like it but it'll give them time to get updated imaging. Richard once again walks out.
In the trauma room, Link has cut Marley out of her wedding dress. As Marley talks about her ugly divorce, Amelia examines her back and finds a step off at the thoracolumbar junction. She suspects a chance fracture. They need to get scans to confirm.
Nick enters Tasha's room. Tasha adresses him as "Dr. Grey". He then tells Evynn he wants to hold out for a better fit. Evynn disagrees, Catherine showed her the scans, too. Nick lists the possible complications and says they have time to wait. Evynn says every day of waiting is a new chance for Tasha's liver to fail. She needs this now. She pleads with Nick to make it happen. Tasha has trouble with her phone so Evynn goes to assist. Tasha doesn't recognize her niece and nephew on a picture.
The interns are in a human knot. Danny says it takes teamwork and communication to untie it. Jules and Simone's lacking communication causes the knot to collapse. Danny says learning to laugh at mistakes is part of the exercise, too. He has them pick a number to make pairs for the next exercise. Jules is paired with Simone. Bailey picks up on the tension.
Link and Amelia show Marley her scans and explain that her fracture is unstable, so they need screws and rods to stabilize it. Marley was 23 when she married Brad. She moved from her dorm to Brad's place. She finally gets to live on her own. She's supposed to be living her best life. One of her friends starts hitting on Link. Link says they need to start prepping Marley for surgery.
Meredith paged Richard to talk while waiting for Tasha's new scans. She asks him what he expected her to do with Catherine. He wanted her to tell him as she's never had qualms about breaking rules before. Nick comes in, too. Ndugu will also bring the liver. Nick has decided to go with the donor after all. They'll make it work. Tasha's blood work is relatively good. Neither the scans nor her labs indicate that her liver condition has gotten to the point where it would cause altered mentation. If there is something else acutely causing it, they should delay the transplant. Meredith wants to scan her brain. Richard thinks they should talk to Evynn first. He goes to leave as Meredith asks him to stop walking out on her. He tells her to stop giving him reasons to.
The groups are building towers with raw spaghetti and marshmallows.

- Nick Marsh (transplant surgeon)
- Meredith Grey (general surgeon)
- Richard Webber (general surgeon)
- Treatment:
Tasha had primary sclerosing cholangitis and needed a liver transplant. Her case was complicated by situs inversus. When Tasha showed signs of confusion, Meredith suspected hepatic encephalopathy. They reviewed her scans and made a plan to rotate the donor liver to fit it into her abdomen, but Nick wanted to reject the liver because it was too large. They did more scans and ran labs and realized her liver function wasn't bad enough to cause altered mentation, so they suggested she may had had a stroke. Richard mentioned this to Evynn, her wife, and Evynn refused an MRI, saying Tasha had already had too many tests. Meredith ran the MRI anyway and noticed signs of Alzheimer's. She told Richard about this and he said he already knew because he'd had her medical records faxed over and she'd been diagnosed two years prior. Her surgery was cancelled right before it started as a result.

He lost his pulse and they did CPR until the paramedics arrived and they were able to do a pericardiocentesis when needle aspiration didn't work. Winston saw a hole in his heart, so he put a stitch in to close it. After this, they were able to restore sinus rhythm. They rode with him to the hospital and handed him off to David Beckman.
