Karen is a nurse at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
History[]
Hospital Hacking[]
When the computers at Grey Sloan were hacked, the doctors were left unable to access patient medical records. Jo spent time running around the hospital, tracking down which nurse had tended to Frankie Baner, so they'd know what kind of stroke he was having so they could treat him properly. She asked James and learned that Karen had been on shift at that time, but Karen said she was tied up, so she asked Taylor to take care of Frankie. Jo found Taylor just as he was leaving the hospital and he told her that he hadn't given Frankie Vitamin K, meaning giving him heparin would probably kill him. ("Out of Nowhere")
Karin Taylor[]
When Karin Taylor complained of pain in the ER, Karen came to get April to tell her about it. ("Personal Jesus")
Tad[]
When Tad started coughing up blood in the ER, Karen stepped in to help and informed Tom Koracick that no labs had been ordered for Tad. ("Gut Feeling")
Frankie's Death[]
When fellow nurse, Frankie, was 28 weeks pregnant, she collapsed. Her spleen was twisted, but she refused surgery because she was worried about her baby. Her spleen started to un-twist, but then she had abdominal bleeding, so she was rushed into surgery. In surgery, the bleed was stopped, but then Frankie crashed, so they did an emergency c-section to deliver her son. After that, they tried to resuscitate her but they were unsuccessful. Richard then delivered the news of her death to Karen and the other nurses. ("Anybody Have a Map?")
Catherine's Surgery[]
When Catherine had surgery to remove her tumor, Karen was in the crowd watching from the gallery. ("The Winner Takes It All")
Lining the Hall for Abby[]
When Abby Redding needed surgery after being raped, Karen was among the women who lined the hallway to the elevator to ensure that Abby wouldn't see any men's faces. ("Silent All These Years")
Directing Sabrina and Chris[]
When Sabrina and Chris Webber came to the hospital looking for Richard, Karen told them she knew who he was, but he didn't work there anymore and they needed to go to Pacific Northwest General Hospital instead. ("Papa Don't Preach")
Leo's X-ray[]
When Leo had an x-ray after throwing up at day care, Karen came in to tell Teddy and Owen the scans were up. ("A Hard Pill to Swallow")
Joey Phillips[]
When Joey Phillips refused to do his physical therapy, Cormac went to Karen and asked for the location of the video game cart, hoping that would help. She went to look for it. ("A Diagnosis")
Richard's Surgery[]
Karen was among the medical staff in the gallery watching Richard's explantation and hip replacement. ("Put on a Happy Face")
Robert's Surgery[]
When Robert Sullivan had surgery to treat his nerve condition, Karen checked on him afterward. He was in extreme pain, so she gave him morphine as Amelia had ordered. ("Louder Than a Bomb")
Covid-19[]
A month into the Covid-19 pandemic, Karen was working outside the hospital, screening patients before they were brought in or sent home. ("All Tomorrow's Parties")
On the new interns' first day, Karen became frustrated with James Chee, who had spent two hours on progress notes and summaries and hadn't even finished one. When she saw Koracick approaching, she told him to fix it. ("My Happy Ending")
When Seattle Pres closed to incoming patients due to being at capacity, Karen helped set up the cafeteria as COVID overflow. She informed Teddy that they had four more high-flows because they'd lost the patients who were using them. ("No Time for Despair")
Car Accident[]
When Noah and Danny Young were brought to the ER after a car accident, Karen went to the ambulance bay with Owen to greet them. When Owen asked where his resident was, Karen said she wasn't their keeper. ("Some Kind of Tomorrow")
Owen's Study[]
Karen drew blood from Vinicius Velo for Owen's study of veterans with pulmonary fibrosis from exposure to burn pits. ("Bottle Up and Explode!")
Wendell's Arrival[]
When Wendell Ndugu came to town to see his brother, he roped Karen into tricking his brother into thinking he was a patient with aortic dissection. ("Road Trippin'")
Parkinson's Article[]
When Meredith, Amelia, and Kai published their article about their work to cure Parkinson's, Karen congratulated Meredith on it. ("Out for Blood")
Jack's Hand[]
Karen was working at the desk when Jack Gibson came into the ER to get his hand and wrist treated. Once he was finished and going to leave, Karen had him sign his discharge paperwork. Due to his injury, he asked if he could just put an X and she said she didn't care. When Carina came back and yelled at him, he told Karen that Carina was usually nicer, only to have her say again that she didn't care. ("Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey")
Ignoring Lucas[]
When Lucas Adams brought Joyce Ward upstairs to find her daughter, whom she said was in labor, he asked Karen for help. She told him she wasn't an OB nurse and reminded him that he had a tablet under his arm he could use to find her. ("Let's Talk About Sex")
Treating Maya[]
When Maya Bishop was brought into the ER after a fall, Karen helped Benson Kwan treat her. She prompted him to say they needed to start two lines and told him she also needed bicarb and insulin when he said to push calcium, but said he needed to check her blood sugar first. She also suggested calling an attending because Maya is a firefighter and married to one of their doctors. When Benson didn't answer her question about pushing insulin, she reminded him that she needed him to give a verbal order before she could do it. Karen collected a sample of Maya's urine and sent it to the lab for testing. ("We Build Then We Break")
Getting Owen[]
When Teddy collapsed in the OR while operating, Karen went to get Owen. ("Happily Ever After?")
Missing Patient[]
When Simone Griffith and Benson Kwan realized a patient was missing from the ER, Karen said she'd seen him near the stairwell. ("Never Felt So Alone")
Theo Ruiz[]
During the Fall City Wildfire, Karen came to get Owen, who was working on Theo Ruiz, to talk to the hospital's emergency coordinator about their pre-evacuation plan. ("Burn It Down")
When Theo was injured by a falling tree, Karen told Ben they were taken him in for an exploratory laparotomy. ("One Last Time")
Dressing[]
Karen admonished Levi Schmitt for removing a dressing to check a wound and not replacing it. She told him she had other things she needed to do, so he needed to replace his own dressings. ("Take Me to Church")
Darren Riley[]
When Darren Riley's pump malfunctioned, Karen informed Jules and Mika that it would be a few hours to get a replacement as someone had accidentally taken the keys to the supply closet home. When they needed to do an emergency procedure later in the night to save Darren's life, she suggested they wait for an attending only to be told that everyone was operating. ("Night Moves")
Heat Wave[]
When a heat wave brought in a flood of patients, Karen reported that she had critical patients and nowhere to put them. Despite this and Teddy saying they needed to close to trauma, Ben told her they'd remain open to trauma. ("Drop It Like It's Hot")
Career[]
She is a nurse at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
