Katie Rogers is a patient who was in a car accident while undergoing treatment for gastric cancer.
History[]
Katie had been diagnosed with stage II gastric cancer. On a day she was supposed to have chemotherapy, she was in a car accident. She was taken to the ER, where an ultrasound showed free fluid in her abdomen. Then a CT showed that her spleen was bleeding and needed to be removed. Katie asked Bailey how this would affect her cancer treatment, but Bailey told her to focus on one thing at a time and not worry until Bailey looked worried. After Katie's splenectomy, Katie wanted to know when she could get back to work and treatment and Bailey had to tell her that they found what looked like tumors on her liver, meaning her cancer had likely spread and she would need more tests so her cancer could be re-staged. After tests, they determined her cancer was stage IV. When Bailey told Katie the news, she asked what the next steps were. Bailey said she first had to heal from her surgery and they would put her on a new chemotherapy regimen and look for clinical trials she could get into. When Bailey noticed she hadn't had any visitors, she asked if Katie had told anyone she was in the hospital. Katie said she would tell them when she knew more. She later told Lucas that most of her friends didn't understand the situation she was in.
Katie walked around looking for Bailey to ask her some questions. Instead, she found and asked Lucas the questions she had about trials she was looking into. When she complained of leg pain, Lucas examined her and found evidence of a blood clot. An ultrasound confirmed it and he put her on heparin to break up the clot. ("Goodbye Horses")
When the time came for Katie to start her tailored immunotherapy treatment, Lucas discovered that her medication was expired. Rather than making her wait for a new delivery, he drove her to Harbor General, where they had the medication. On the way, she asked how they had the medication and pointed out to him that someone probably died before they could get it, which made it available. He said they could also have backed out because of the possible side effects and started to list them. She chastised him for his lack of sensitivity when talking to her about it. As they drove, they got a flat tire. Since Amelia's car didn't have a spare, he had to call roadside assistance. Once the tire was replaced, they finished their drive to the hospital, where Katie got her treatment and they watched a romantic comedy together. When Lucas was driving her home, Katie talked about how long it had been since she'd been out by the water, even though she only lived five minutes away from it and Lucas decided to take her there before taking her home. After this trip, Katie started texting Lucas memes and asked him for movie recommendations. He put together a movie playlist and sent it to her. ("Heavy on Me")
