Leanne Thompson is a woman who gave birth to a child at the practice.
History[]
Leanne came into the practice in labor. She gave birth after a quick labor, but while after their child was born, Addison noticed genital ambiguity. The baby had both a penis and a vaginal opening, but was otherwise perfectly healthy. Addison agreed to run genetic and hormonal tests to give them more information.
The tests revealed an XX karyotype, but a disorder which causes an excess production of testosterone in utero, which caused a penis to grow. About 30% of them identify as male and 70% as female as adults. Naomi said they could have the parents choose and alter the genitalia to reflect that and support it with hormone therapy, but Addison said they should raise the baby how they want now, but leave the genitalia as is until the child is an adolescent. Naomi said the ambiguity would create problems for the child's whole life.
The doctors went to the Thompsons with the options and they said they figured it was best to figure out a solution and put it behind them. They decided on surgery, but instead of giving the baby female genitalia, they said they wanted male genitalia, despite only a 30% chance the baby would orient to male.
Addison agreed to do the surgery, but as she prepared to operate, she changed her mind and told the parents that the baby was fine and had no problems, but she couldn't do the surgery. Naomi said they could still have a son and take him home and raise him as Matthew and accept him as he is. And then when he's ready, he can make the choice for himself. Mitch said they'd find another surgeon to operate, but Leanne said no. She didn't want to make a mistake. Mitch said he couldn't take the baby home and hope it turns out right, so he left.
Leanne held Matthew. She was unsure how to raise Matthew by herself, but Dell said even though she was unsure, he believed she was doing the right thing.
Naomi went to Mitch and told him that he should be there for his family and love them. He said he wasn't sure he could, but she told him to grow up and step up and not hurt the woman who loves him. This prompted Mitch to return to the hospital, kiss Leanne, and hold Matthew.
