“ | The Apgar test. The Whipple procedure. The DeBakey clamp. So many of the tools we use in our hospitals every day are named after the people who invented them. Even diseases used to be named after the people who discovered them. But a medical board in the 1970s discontinued that practice, claiming that no one could "own" a sickness. As altruistic as the profession is, doctors are human. If we do something that could change the face of medicine, we want our name on it. When people hear our names, what will they remember? What did we leave behind? Did we blaze trails? Did we guide a new generation? Did we bestow all the wisdom we could? Have we paved a legacy? Maybe instead of wanting to be known for what we've done, let's be known for who we are. | ” |
Legacy is the eleventh episode of the eighteenth season and the 391st overall episode of Grey's Anatomy.

He’s not able to come down for her big day, but he thinks he would be a distraction anyway. He’s heading in to see a patient with end-stage liver disease, primary sclerosing cholangitis. A donor has become available. Meredith offers him a bittersweet congratulations. He asks her to send him pictures but quickly realizes how it sounds a clarifies he means of the surgery, doc pics.
Jo and Link are walking in the hospital. Link greets her and comments that she changed her hair. She says she realized it was a mistake, so she pulled herself together and fixed the mistake. He says the new look looks nice too and asks if she had a long night. She had a patient with placenta previa which turned into a c-section at 4:45am. Mom and baby are great, but the OB resident is fully wiped. He says she’s been working a lot of nights lately, which she dismisses saying a lot of babies come at night. He cuts to the chase and asks if she’s avoiding him. She says she’s not and asks if he’s avoiding her. They share an awkward moment before she leaves saying she’s off to get the greasiest egg sandwich Joe’s has to offer, then home for a nap before coming back to pick up Luna. Link offers to pick her up instead, she agrees and heads out.
Bailey is in the conference room on a phone call as Jordan Wright walks up with coffee and a smoothie. She asks him to walk with her and he notices she’s distracted by whatever that phone call was. She tells him a med school friend called, he works with NASA at the Aerospace Medicine Fellowship. She starts to tell him what they do, but he’s already very aware they are working on innovative devices designed to identify and combat special disorientation and vestibular abnormalities. She’s not surprised he knows. She says it’s a program that combines the two things she’s dreamt of her entire life – medicine and space. She’s been asked to run their clinical training, but it comes at the most difficult time of her life. Jordan is impressed she got asked to go to space and says just when he thought she couldn’t get any more amazing, she goes and breaks the stratosphere.
Meredith enters Hamilton’s room followed by Amelia. She tells him pre-op laps, EKG, and CXR are all clear, and his abdominal incision is healing nicely without signs of infection. Amelia says his pre-op MRI scans are done and ready to be uploaded. Kai confirms the cell vials are all in the temperature range. Hamilton uses a voice recorder commenting about watching the team come together to realize his remarkable vision, he's humbled by how far they’ve come. Amelia stops him to ask what he’s doing. He says its for his book and asks how they think history books are written. Meredith says she, Amelia, and Kai will publish in medical journals to record posterity. Amelia congratulates him as ‘patient x’. Hamilton asks if there is a bigger room available to accommodate all their egos. Meredith tells him that despite how he’s treated her and the entire team, that she’s still here, just like she was 11 days ago when his arrogance and dishonesty nearly sank the entire project. She leaves to make sure the OR is ready.
Levi is still playing video games in his mother’s basement when Richard arrives. He thought he and Levi could talk, but Levi ignores him until he loses his game. Levi tells him that every time he closes his eyes, he sees blood pouring out of Devon’s body while hearing Devon’s voice in his head. He says he doesn’t mean to be rude, but doesn’t think talking will help, the game does, and starts another round.
Link is walking by as he hears Owen arguing with his physical therapist. Owen believes he can do therapy on his own. Link offers to take over for the therapist and thanks him as he leaves the room. Owen says he needs someone else, but Link says he’s already have 3 different therapists in 10 days, and mentions the rumor that Owen made one cry. Owen says as he sits in this bed, he sees patients he could be helping, rigs pulling in all night, that it’s torture to know he can’t help anyone. He frustrated he hasn’t graduated to the treadmill, but Link tells him the only way that happens is if he put in the hours. Owen says he’s trying but Link cuts him off and says he either cancels the sessions or yells at people leading them. He needs a solid support system as it is a major factor in patient outcome, especially with long rehabs. He asks if Teddy is coming by soon, but Owen isn’t sure. Link checks his watch, then grabs a wheelchair and orders Owen into it.
Levi is still playing video games as a worried Richard watches on. He says he had his own Devon, and he knows exactly how Levi is feeling. He tells him about Chuck Higgins, a cannery worker. They met when Richard and Adele went on a food-and-blanket drive for the homeless community. Chuck had organized the event. As Richard continues, Levi sets down the game controller. One day, Chuck came in for a bowel obstruction, he didn’t like hospitals and Richard remembers the fear in his eyes when they told him he needed surgery. When Richard told him he would be the operating surgeon, Richard saw the fear go away. Chuck was comforted by the thought that someone who looked like him in a white coat would be operating. Richard was a young attending and too inexperienced and timid to speak up, and after 3 hours, and a miscommunication in the OR. Levi interrupts assuming the end of the story. Richard tells him doctors don’t always kill people they feel close to, that it makes the lose unbearably worse. Richard says it’s not even Chuck’s death that haunts him, it’s the relief in Chuck’s eyes and the trust he put in Richard. Levi reaches for the remote, increases the volume, and continues his game.
Teddy is drinking at Joe’s when Jo comes in to pick up her order. Teddy assumes Jo is judging her for day drinking, and says she hasn’t had a day off in 35 days, she was on all night, her kids are with Owen’s mother, and she’s going through some stuff. Jo asks if she would like some company.
