“ | In the 1800s, one of the more common reasons women visited the doctor was hysteria. A now defunct diagnosis. Hysteria was used to describe a wide array of symptoms: chest pain, anxiety, a swollen abdomen, mood swings. They tried a variety of treatments for hysteria, ranging from rest to psychosomatic therapy. But true relief for these women didn't exist until physicians tried using what they called pelvic massage. The cure was called a hysterical paroxysm, which, today, has come to been known as an orgasm. Modern medicine continues to recognize the stress-reducing benefits of the female orgasm but doctors no longer perform the cure. When done properly and consensually, sex can be medicine. We know it reduces stress and strengthens the immune system. It even rejuvenates your brain activity. But sex without connection can leave you feeling empty. Friendship, laughter, simple human touch, these are stress relievers too. Because truly, it's about connection. When you're physically close to another person, the nervous system responds. The body is flooded with feel-good hormones. And everything else just fades away. | ” |
Let's Talk About Sex is the third episode of the nineteenth season and the 403rd overall episode of Grey's Anatomy.

Bailey recruits the interns to create a series of social media videos informing teens about sexual health. Full Summary[]
As Luke arrives at the hospital on his skateboard, Simone is on the phone trying to convince her grandmother to stay home. Amelia is video chatting with Kai, trying to find a weekend to meet. Kai reveals they are not in Minnesota. Amelia turns around and sees them. Amelia is delighted.
Meredith and Zola arrive at the hospital. They made a deal allowing Zola to skip school if she did her homework at the hospital. Meredith instructs her to go to her office. Meredith explains to Maggie and Nick that Zola had another panic attack. They are surprised when Bailey walks by. Nick says she and Jo are using the interns today for an important project.
In the intern locker room, Levi hands out release forms to sign each. He refuses to answer questions and only tells them they are with Dr. Bailey today, puzzling the interns. Bailey appears in the doorway.
The interns trail Bailey and Jo, who explains who Bailey is. Bailey and Jo have been working on a sex ad curriculum since the Supreme Court stripped women of their reproductive rights. Teenagers need to be taught about their bodies because not getting pregnant is the only way you're sure not to be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy. Today, they will be shooting sex ed videos for social media. The interns are not enthused. In exchange for their cooperation, they'll get to work with another world-class surgeons. They enter the lecture room, where Addison is waiting for them on the stage. She points out they're getting paid to talk about sex today.
As the cameras and educational props are set up, Richard comments they did not hold back. The subject is close to Addison's heart. Last week alone, five young women asked her for prophylactic tubal ligations out of fear of getting pregnant in college in hostile states. Jo introduces herself to Addison, who's heard great things about her. Addison then spots Lucas and goes to greet him but he stops her mid-sentence by claiming to be a big fan of her work. Addison introduces herself to a starstruck Simone.
Owen informs Teddy that there are no interns today. Lucas appears and asks for more hand-on experience in the ER. He's willing to do anything to avoid Bailey's project. Teddy gladly accepts the help.
Bailey and Jo hand out the scripts to the interns. Richard is not willing to participate and excuses himself. Benson and Simone claim they are not qualified for this. Addison reminds them hundreds of thousands of teenagers will get pregnant and be forced to carry their babies to term, or worse, die after performing back-alley illegal abortions. This project will save lives. Bailey and Addison then open the doors for a group of teenagers, whom Bailey recruited from Tuck's high school.
Joyce arrives in the ER. She is looking for her daughter Denise, who is having her grandbaby today. Levi summons Lucas and has him take her up to labor and delivery.
Winston catches up with Nick. He needs interns to round on Maggie's patients so he doesn't have to. Nick informs him what the interns are up to today. Understanding the importance, Winston goes to round himself. Nick then spots Zola at the end of the hall. She wants to watch surgery rather than do her history homework. Nick doesn't have surgery for a few hours so he takes her to see something cool.
The interns are void of enthusiasm as they deliver their talks, boring the group of teenagers. Bailey is regretting following Jo's advice to get young people to do the talking. A girl runs out of the room.
Addison finishes up a phone call with Jake as the girl enters the stairway. Her period is late. Addison says there can multiple reasons for that but she suggests they get a blood test done to rule out pregnancy. Addison promises not to tell her parents.
As Nick finishes up a phone call about a transplant, Zola is acing laparoscopic surgery practice in the skills lab. Zola swears Meredith has never shown her this before. Zola asks if he's always known he wanted to be a doctor. Nick considered different professions, ultimately settling on science teacher. But then his mother died.
Bailey and Jo tell the interns to remind themselves of their passion for science. Anyone can read facts from a paper. The interns says these scripts are just full of boring factoids that one could find anywhere. Diamond, another girl from the audience, starts experiencing heavy abdominal pain.
Nick watches as Zola manoeuvres through the endoscopic simulation with great ease. Kai comes in to find a spot to perform some data analysis until Amelia is done with work. Nick asks about the trial. They are hoping to initiate the next phase in a few months if David doesn't fight the next research director. Meredith is not easy to replace. Nick admits to liking his new job. Kai then notices how Zola easily solved a cognitive puzzle.
Lucas and Joyce arrive on the OB floor. Joyce says they are looking for Denise Griffith but Lucas can't find any admitted patient under that name. Joyce is sure that Denise told her Seattle Grace. Lucas then searches the records. Just as Joyce says Denise will name her daughter Simone, Lucas finds Denise's chart, stating she died shortly after giving birth to Simone Griffith on October 19, 1995.
Diamond is in the CT scanner while Jo and Bailey talk in the boot. Diamond's mother is on her way. She has informed Jo that Diamond has extremely traumatic periods. The scans come up, revealing a massive cyst on the left side and ovarian torsion on the right. Diamond needs surgery right away. Jo has never done a surgery like this on her own and Carina is performing a hysterectomy. Bailey says Addison can help them out.
Simone is giving a boring contraception talk. She is paged to the pit and rushes off. The three other interns are left debating will demonstrate how to put on condoms. Mika bows out since she mostly has sex with women while Benson does not feel like helping. Jules then steps onto the stage and asks who wants to know where the clitoris is, drawing great interest from the audience.
Assisted by Mika and Benson, Jules explains where the clitoris is and how to approach it. Afterward, Benson warns against the pull-out method. Then, he demonstrates how to put on a condom on a banana, accidentally dropping the banana in the process. Mika throws condoms around the room Oprah style.
Addison finds Levi, who immediately begs her not to be included in the sex ed thing since he hates high schoolers. She asks him to keep an eye out for Lucia's pregnancy test while she aids in the ovarian torsion surgery. He accepts and says he can relate to a scared high schooler.
Bailey asks Richard for privilege so she can participate in Diamond's surgery. After teasing her for a bit, he grants her the privilege.
Simone arrives in the lobby and finds Lucas sitting with her grandmother. Upon seeing her, Joyce mistakes her for Denise. Meredith overhears how Simone corrects her and says that her mother died. Joyce says she wants to go home but she'll only allow her daughter to take her. Joyce grows increasingly uneasy until Meredith steps in and instructs her to focus on her breathing. She promises she'll help Joyce find her daughter while Simone tears up.
Amelia and Maggie were paged to the skills lab by Nick. He explains they got sidetracked with Zola, who is doing neurocognitive puzzles with Kai. She's killing all of them. They are impressed by her.
Jules finds Link in the ER. She needs help for a sex-ed thing. He deems this inappropriate and says he wants to steer clear of her so nobody will think that he is harassing her. He tells her to find an actual couple for her video. Winston then walks by but he also turns her down.
Owen and Teddy are on stage. Owen stresses what consent means. Teddy then talks about the 11 erogenous zone of the woman's body. Owen is surprised to hear that the armpits are among them. Teddy says like most men, he goes straight for the breasts. Nipples can be as sensitive as the clitoris, so going straight for them without foreplay can be painful and overstimulating. Owen then listens with interest as she completes the list of the zones. Jules herself is surprised to hear the back of the knees. She asks Benson if he's ever had someone lick the back of his knees. "Wouldn't you like to know?" he teases.
In surgery, Addison is draining the cyst to get access to the torsed ovary. She has been experiencing a constant rage inside after the stripping of Roe v. Wade. She has been thinking about going to a place where you pay to destroy things. Bailey knows from experience that doesn't help. Jo hates how she moved to OB for joy and now they risk going back to the 70's. They contemplate making a video about the dangers of coathangers. Diamond starts bleeding. They need to extend the incision to save this ovary in order to preserve Diamond's reproductive options.
Levi finds Lucia and informs her that she is, in fact, pregnant. Lucia is dumbstruck. She only had sex one time. She does not want to keep the baby. Her parents might murder her. Levi says as long as the embryo is under 10 weeks, she can have a medical abortion and her parents don't need to know. They can provide her with pills to manage the abortion at home. Lucia would like to get the pills.
Meredith finds Simone on a bench outside. Joyce has calmed down. She's with Lucas now. Joyce has been having symptoms for two years but her symptoms progressed fast the last six months. Meredith talks about her experience with Alzheimer's with her mother. Simone talks about her mother's death. Simone put effort into matching as far away from this place as possible so she wouldn't have to watch this happen to her grandmother, but here she is, stuck in that house. She loves her grandmother, who raised her. Meredith advises her to go along with Joyce's reality. Simone is afraid she doesn't have that in her. Meredith says she'll find it in herself. She allows Simone to take all the time she needs. Her door is always open for Simone.
Meredith was paged to the skills lab about Zola. Maggie, Nick, and Kai inform her that Zola has aced every one of Kai's neurocognitive puzzles at a level far higher than most adults. Meredith wonders why Zola is being evaluated without her consent. Nick says it happened by accident. Maggie says her being extremely gifted could explain the panic attacks. Undiagnosed giftedness can contribute to behavioral issues, such as anxiety. Zola's brain needs challenges and she needs to be around peers that can relate to her. Meredith doesn't respond and enters the lab.
Jo and Bailey return to the lecture room as Jules is talking about how most people with vaginas can't reach an orgasm through penetration alone. A male student asks why it happens in porn then. Jules says porn has no resemblance to actual sex. The student disagrees. Benson says that is because the women he has sex with also make it look and sound like porn but that is an act. A real man wants to give a woman a real orgasm. Bailey begrudgingly admits the interns were right. Jo says it's going viral. Jules disagrees. They need music and dancing.
Joyce is playing a game with Lucas in the lounge. Simone enters and Joyce calls her Denise again, asking if she's had the baby. Simone plays along this time. She says it's a girl. Joyce wants to see her granddaughter but Simone tells her the doctors are still cleaning her up. Lucas is paged away so Simone takes his place.
Jo and Bailey inform Diamond's mother that they saved Diamond's ovaries. She will be okay. Marion hates how she just blamed Diamond's pain on her menstruation without ever taking her to a gynecologist. Bailey says it's hard to know what to look for if no one properly educates you.
Addison meets Levi outside Lucia's room. They enter together. Levi explains to Lucia how the first pill, mifepristone, will stop the pregnancy from growing. After 24 hours, 4 pills of misoprostol follow. She'll then experience some cramping and bleeding, like a heavy period. She'll then pass the pregnancy and the pain will stop. Lucia wonders if things could go wrong. Addison says complications are very rare but she gives Lucia her personal number so she can call her any time with questions.
Time has come to make reels. One by one, attendings and interns take the stage to dance and point. Richard is confused as to what he's pointing at. Bailey explains they'll add the facts later.
Bailey and Richard are watching the final result. Bailey explains they need the speak teenagers' language if they want them to learn. Richard asks Bailey when they'll see her at the hospital again. Bailey has decided not to sit idly by while her daughter doesn't have the same rights as her brothers. This is a humanitarian crisis. Bailey wants to reopen the clinic again and dedicate it to reproductive health. The rest of the time, she will be an attending teaching the next generation. She does not want to be Chief. She just want to cut and go home to her family without added stress. Richard welcomes her back.
Simone approaches Lucas in the ER and thanks him for watching her grandmother. Simone assures Lucas that she is okay but she doesn't want the others to know. She doesn't want to be the broken home girl. She then blurts out she knows about him being a Shepherd. She hasn't told the others yet. They agree to keep each other's secret.
Amelia finds Maggie by herself in the skills lab with the neurocognitive puzzles. She spent her childhood making these with people who chronometers watching over her. She spent her childhood thinking there was something wrong with her. Her mind would race, she couldn't speak in front of the class, and would panic over every social interaction. Maggie wonders how she could have missed this with Zola. Amelia says it's hard to see yourself in others, especially when you think it's a side of yourself you've left behind. Amelia has the same thing with Lucas now. Maggie says her gift certainly has given her struggles. A kind child psychiatrist helped. Amelia says they'll make sure Zola get the tools she needs.
Richard runs into Addison as they head out. He invites her over for dinner. She wants to keep working. He points out she needs to rest. Solving this problem is not a sprint. What the government is doing makes her feel erased. Richard convinces her she needs a night off from the fight.
Meredith and Nick head out with Zola. She hasn't decided yet how long she'll be mad at him. She's at a loss with Zola now and the people around her are breaking the rules she set out. Nick says they have a lot to figure out but they just got a big piece of the puzzle. That does feel good.
Owen enters the bedroom at home and gently strokes the back of Teddy's knee. She pulls him in for a kiss and they proceed to have sex.
Amelia and Kai start making out in a hotel room.
Link is giving Jo a foot rub on the couch. She learned about the erogenous zone today and says there are erogenous spots on the feet. He asks if he should stop but she says it's just a foot rub.
Simone and Lucas spend some time together in the tunnels.
In the locker room, Benson and Jules share a quiet, intense look. They head to an on-call room. He kisses her. She tells him this is just this once. There are no feelings involved and she doesn't like him. He knows he's not for everyone.
Owen and Teddy have sex with him having more attention for the less-visited erogenous zones.
Kai and Amelia cuddle and make out.
Jo lets out a soft moan as Link rubs her feet.
