Lindsay Allyn is a patient who had her spine fused with a scaffolding made with a 3D printer.
History[]
Lindsay fell in the shower while she was shaving her legs after a cervical fusion necessitated by Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. She had weakness and paralysis on her left side when she arrived in the emergency room. Scans showed that the fall had broken the screws holding her spine together, leaving her cervical vertebrae compressing her spine, causing the paralysis. They put her in traction so they could run more tests and make a plan. The CT showed eosinophilia, meaning she was allergic to the metal screws they'd used in her neck, meaning they couldn't be replaced. They made a plan to remove the screwed and use her spine using a 3D printed matrix that her body would use as scaffolding. She'd lose some mobility in her neck, but it would resolve the paralysis in her body. Her surgery was successful and her brother was told she'd regain her mobility in a few days.
