Little Girl Blue is the sixth episode of the fifth season and the 65th overall episode of Station 19.

Short Summary[]

Station 19 and Station 23 each attempt to celebrate Thanksgiving following the fallout from the neighborhood explosion. The firefighters come together to cook, toast to loved ones they have lost and celebrate the families they have become.

Full Summary[]

Vic is resting in her hospital bed while Travis and Theo sleep by her bedside. As time passes, the rest of the team comes in at various times to visit, including on the day of Dean's funeral.

Vic continues her recovery at home with Travis.

On Thanksgiving, Travis comes into Vic's room and tells her it's Thanksgiving. She tells him she's coming. He leaves so she can get ready to go.

At the station, Andy comes in. She dropped a patient off at Grey Sloan and thought she'd check in. She asks Jack what time dinner is. When he doesn't answer, she tells him it'll get better. Ben comes in with Pru to Andy's delight. He says it's going well, but Dean's parents aren't happy even though that's what Dean wanted. Pru spots a picture of Dean in the memorial case and asks where he is. Andy says he's with her daddy and they both love her very much.

Travis says his dad is insistent on coming to Thanksgiving because he can't bear to be alone with Nari. Now Travis has to pretend everything is okay. Emmett says that's exactly what he needs to do. Sullivan and Maya come in and are surprised to see Vic in the kitchen cooking. Travis immediately defends himself, saying Vic insisted on coming. Maya asks if the department cleared her, but Vic doesn't think they need to clear her to peel potatoes. Maya says it's her workplace where there are alarms that may put undue stress on her heart. Vic appreciates the concern, but her heart is fine. Vic just needs one thing to feel normal today. Just then, her watch beeps, though she brushes off everyone's concern. At Travis's insistence, she hands over the potato she was peeling and leaves the room.

Downstairs, Vic sees Dean's picture and pauses. Her watch beeps again and Jack asks if she's okay. She says she's okay as anyone can be after being electrocuted and having a heart attack. The alarm is to remind her to take a pill. She asks how Jack is. Jack won't talk about it, so she tells him he needs to do something about it instead of just sitting there in all his pain. She tells him to go help Travis cook.

Maya tells everyone in the beanery that she just heard that the investigation into her insubordination is finally happening. Sullivan guesses that McCallister finally got to the bottom of his inbox after the gas main explosion. Maya wonders if he's being blamed for that, but Sullivan says he isn't yet. Jack comes in and says he's going to do all the cooking. He says he needs it. Travis reminds him there's a lot of cooking, but he says it's fine. Emmett quietly asks if Travis is going to let him do it. Travis says he's a pretty good cook and he needs it more than Travis does. Sullivan asks Jack if he's all right and Jack says he's cooking.

Ben shows Pru where her dad would sit in the fire truck and she asks again where he is. Vic comes in and asks what Pru is doing there. Ben says she's there for Thanksgiving. As they get closer, Vic's watch beeps again and Ben asks if it's a heart rate tracker. Vic excuses herself to go help Travis. Just then, the alarm rings. Ben recognizes the address as Ingrid's shop. He hands Pru over to Maya and tells her to keep Pru entertained. Maya wonders why the woman is being left with the child and asks if Travis and Emmett can watch her. Travis spots his parents coming in and says he has his own babysitting to do.

Deja comes in with groceries while Theo and Andy are cooking and asks why they sent her to get stuff for Thanksgiving when they already have enough food. They tell her it's so they can make food for Aquino and Morse's families. As firefighters, they take care of their own. Aquino is out of critical care, but he has a long road ahead. Once Deja has left, Theo asks if Andy saw Pru at 19. Andy talks about how cute she was. Then she sees that Theo isn't happy and asks about it. Theo says vic is going into the station for Thanksgiving and he's not sure she's ready to see Pru, a walking, talking reminder that Dean is dead. And he thinks Vic is scared that JJ's going to come back and try to take Pru. This upsets Andy, who says JJ has no right to do anything with Pru because she left.

Maya watches as Pru smacks her hand down on the piano in the day room. She asks Pru what they should do. Suddenly, Pru grabs herself and says, "Potty." Maya picks her up and starts to take her there, but as she walks, she hears Pru poop. Carina comes in with a laugh and Maya begs for help. Carina takes Pru from Maya and quickly begins changing her diaper as Maya comments on how bad it smells. Maya asks how she's so good at this and Carina asks if she never babysat or had friends with kids. Maya never did. It explains a lot about Maya's personality. Once you spend time with kids, you realize that plans don't always make sense when you're two minutes away from an exploding diaper. She finishes with Pru, but says they might need to change her socks as well. Pru picks out some pink ones.

Ingrid thanks Ben and Sullivan for coming out on a holiday. She's embarrassed it's nothing. She was sure she smelled gas, but Ben says there's nothing. He knows the holidays can be tough when you're grieving the loss of a spouse. He invites her to come to the station for their Thanksgiving dinner and she says she'd love to. As they go to leave, Sullivan is critical of Ben inviting her, but Ben says she's lonely.

Paul's phone chimes and Travis asks him to silence it. He wonders why Paul could need his phone while he's with his family on Thanksgiving. Paul says he'd never try to stop Travis from seeing Emmett on the holidays, but Travis reminds him that he refused to let Travis invite Michael to Christmas when they first started dating. Travis then realizes Paul's going to leave at some point to meet up with Kyle. Paul say it's not his business, but Travis thinks it is because it affects Nari. Paul says not to worry about their marriage as they're happy. He knows it's hard to believe, but they are. Travis says he doesn't want to lie. Paul tells him to go ahead and tell Nari, but he knows Travis won't. Paul reiterates that he loves Travis and his mother. Travis doesn't believe that's true because if he did, he wouldn't lie to them. Paul reminds Travis that Emmett was engaged when they met. Emmett, Vic, and Nari walk in, putting a stop to their fight. Paul wants them to go around and say that they're thankful for. Emmett is grateful for his love. Vic is grateful she got out of bed this morning. Travis says he's grateful for truth. Nari's grateful for her son and Emmett and Paul. Travis suggests Paul goes next and starts to push him. Paul snaps and finally tells everyone he's gay and in love with a man and his son won't give him one day of peace. Nari excuses herself and leaves the room, followed by Travis.

In the entryway, Nari is upset with Travis for pushing Paul. She'd noticed things were different in their marriage, but they were still happy.

Nari comes into the kitchen to find Jack making a mess and demands to help him cook. Vic comes in and her watch beeps again. She asks Nari what she's doing and Nari says cooking soothes her. She's angry because they kept news from her supposedly to protect her. Vic understands that feeling and says it feels worse than what they were trying to protect her from, because it means they thought she couldn't handle it. Vic used to believe things happen for a reason, but the truth is there's no meaning. It's all just meaningless.

Bailey comes in with a pie and asks Ben where Pru is. Ben says she's upstairs with Maya and Carina. The call from the lawyers has her on high alert. They are her family. Ben says blood doesn't make a family. They're also Pru's family. Just them, Ingrid comes in with her own pie and Ben introduces them. Bailey excuses herself to check on Pru. Ingrid realizes Bailey is Ben's wife. She's embarrassed and tries to leave, but Ben stops her. She doesn't have to be alone today. She agrees to stay.

Theo and Andy are still cooking and Andy is talking about how Dean was clear on what he wanted and JJ doesn't get a say and neither do Dean's parents. Dean's the one who was raising her. He poured the love in her. Her station 19 family picked up the slack. No one can take her away. Theo asks if Andy knew that Dean was in love with Vic. Andy asks if he's jealous of a dead guy and is angry he's making this about him. Theo says he's not doing that. He's just trying to process his feelings, like everyone else. Andy realizes Diane was right again that when Andy gets hysterical, it's because of her past. She's making Dean's death all about her. And she's mad at Theo and the world because she's mad at her own mother. Andy then says she didn't know about Dean being in love with Vic. It made sense when she learned about it, but Vic didn't love him back. If she did, she would have seen that he loved her, but she chose not to see it.

Emmett finds Travis, who says Emmett's very understanding and forgiving of Paul. Emmett understands Paul because he was in Paul's shoes. Travis says his dad didn't come to his wedding and didn't let his mother come either. He understands now that Paul hated himself, but that doesn't make all the pain go away. He wants Emmett on his side, even though it's selfish. Emmett says there are no sides.

Diane comes in with a pie and is surprised to see Vic at the desk. Vic says she's not back, but she will be spending time at the desk when she does return to work. She thanks Diane for taking over Crisis One. She'll be ready to help again soon. Diane says Sullivan has been helping, as have Ben and Travis. The program will continue. It's Dean's legacy. Vic's watch goes off again, but she brushes it off, saying it's just her heart. She tries to excuse herself, but Diane asks if there's anything she wants to get off her chest. Vic says she's just doing her thing, where she pushes through it and tries to keep it light. After a moment, she admits she wants to crawl in a hole and let it swallow her. She can't let herself do that because everyone expects her to be her and make jokes and make them feel better. Like she did when Lucas died. Diane asks why she cares what they expect. She says if she doesn't, it means this death hurt worse than the last one and she can't let that be true because it's not. Diane explains to her that her body is just reacting differently to this attack. Vic tells Diane Dean was in love with her, but Diane knew. Diane tells her she's punishing herself for not loving him back like he loved her, but she shouldn't. Somewhere inside her, Vic knew he was in love with her. She was just afraid of what would happen if it were true. Vic thanks her for the pie. Diane says they always feel better when they talk to her, so she doesn't know why they always fight her on it. She tells Vic to enjoy the pie and leaves.

As they're setting the table, Travis asks if Thanksgiving isn't supposed to be one of their busier days. Ben, trying to make the conversation less awkward, asks Paul what he does for work. Before he can answer, Sullivan comes in and tells Ben that Ingrid is wandering around the station. He last saw her in the bunks. Ben goes to find her. Bailey tells him to do that and later, they're going to be having a talk. Bailey checks on Pru, who is coloring a turkey. Travis asks Paul why he hasn't left to be with Kyle. Paul says he's not leaving. He loves Nari. He's sorry about how he said it, but he's not sorry it's out. He's been holding onto it for decades. He's not brave like Travis, but he is learning from Travis's example. He wants Nari to know he's here there for her and Travis. Travis excuses himself to get more dishes. Bailey tells Paul Travis will come around and introduces herself.

Ben finds Ingrid on the roof. She says she feels stupid because he's married. She thought the invitation was a date. She asks if he's ever lost anyone, lost the person he slept next to for ten years. She used to like being alone. Then Scott became part of her. She steps over the wall and stands on the other side. She asks Ben to leave her alone.

Ingrid stands up and inches toward the edge, warning Ben to stay back. Ben tells her the building's not that tall. If she jumps, she'll probably just break her legs and be in pain. Ingrid says then she won't be alone. She'll be in the hospital and people will take care of her and bring her food. It's hard to cook for yourself every single day. Ben says she won't be alone for her next meal if she just comes inside. She asks what Ben's wife would say about that. She thinks no one would even miss her. She thinks she might get lucky and hit her head and never wake up.

In the beanery, Carina tells a silent Jack that she lost her brother, too. And it feels awful, like nothing will ever be okay again. So you try to push it down, but that just makes it worse because then it stays. So you have to let it out, because that's how the light comes back in. Nari interrupts their conversation to say she smells smoke. There's a fire in the oven. Maya grabs a fire extinguisher while Jack tries to open the oven, but it's locked because it was set to clean instead of bake. They can't put the fire out if they can't get in the oven. Maya and Jack together can't force it open.

Ingrid talks about how she feels awful. She thinks she should be at acceptance already because it's been over a year since Scott died. Ben says a year isn't that long. He tells her the five stages of grief was developed for people coping with their own terminal illness, accepting their own deaths. It's totally different from accepting the death of a loved one. Firefighters have to come to accept that they could die. But it's a lot harder when someone else does. They may never accept that.

Travis comes in and sees them trying to get the oven open. Suddenly, Maya looks up and asks Carina where Pru is. Carina says Vic took her to Bailey, so she's okay. Travis comes in with the jaws of life and Maya asks what he's doing. He says he's getting the turkey out. Nari says the oven is very expensive. As he starts working, the sprinklers activate, getting Jack, Travis, and Maya wet.

Ben doesn't believe Ingrid really wants to jump. Ingrid says he doesn't know her. He tells her he's married, but the next guy might not be. She's a person who cares. Anyone would be lucky to have her around. She says no one will be Scott. Ben says that's true, but the love people feel is worth the grief. Ingrid takes his hand and he helps her down.

Travis is still trying to get the oven open. He paid $150 for the turkey. He's getting it out. He finally gets it pried open enough for Maya to extinguish the flames. Jack puts the burnt turkey on the stovetop as the sprinklers turn off. Sullivan comes in and asks what happened. Travis says he just destroyed an oven that cost more than his car. Beckett also comes in and slips on the water on the floor, knocking a salad onto himself as he falls. As the others laugh, Carina helps him get back up. Just then, Andy and Theo come in with a whole meal. Suddenly, Jack's laughter turns to tears and Andy comforts him as he finally cries.

Ingrid apologizes to Ben as they come downstairs. He tells her grief is a powerful thing. Then he tells her his friend is going to take her to Grey Sloan to get the help she needs. The grief and PTSD is affecting her life, so she needs help. He tells her to come back and visit when she's feeling better.

Dean's father, Bill, has arrived. He tells Pru he missed her.

Bill understands that they love her, but it's Thanksgiving. His wife is grieving and needs her granddaughter. Bailey can't imagine the loss he's endured. She's sorry for his loss. She invites him to stay for dinner, so he can see that they don't just love Pru. They're her family. She's lost so much. She can't lose the family whose arms she was literally born into. He agrees, but says when he's done, he's leaving with his granddaughter.

Everyone sits down together to eat.

As the meal winds down, Carina and Maya watch Jack with Pru. Maya knows today was a lot for Jack and for everyone else. It was a beautiful disaster. There were disasters happening all over the building and they're all in pain and heartbroken, but when there was a child in the building, it was all okay. When there was a child in Maya's arms, she was fine. They kept her fine. They knew how to keep her fine. She can do this. She suggests that they have a baby. Carina says mourning is not a good time to make big decisions. Maya says she is in mourning, but she's been thinking this whole time that she has to have some kind of plan, but plans don't work. People die and families fall apart. Carina asks if she's serious and she says she is.

Paul brings two pieces of pie and has Travis pick one. Travis tells him that's not how it should have happened. And there could be a lot of mess up ahead for him. But Travis tells him it gets better. Right now is the worst it will feel.

Andy brings Beckett a piece of pie and asks why he didn't join them for dinner. He says it felt like a 19 thing and he doesn't think he's part of that despite being captain. She tells him no one blames him for Dean's death. Everyone's glad he made it. He says if he'd died, there would have been no one to take the call. His parents are dead, his ex-wife is in Florida, and his brother is an alcoholic who doesn't take his calls. The only people who might have mourned him are busy mourning the guy they actually liked. He asks her again to take him up on the offer for a drink. She tells him things are still messy with Sullivan. It's not a good idea. He thanks her for the pie and she leaves. Sullivan watches from the barn as she goes.

Bill tells Pru it's time to go, calling her Arike. When Bailey questions that, he says it's her true name. Bailey says it doesn't have to be a battle. They all love her. Bill says they don't love her as much as her grandparents. Ben asks when they should pick her up. Bill picks Pru up, thanks them for dinner, and then leaves with her as they all wave and say goodbye.
