Lizzie Hagan is a patient who was mostly blind after a war injury.
History[]
Lizzie was injured in an IED explosion in Afghanistan. She had lost her right eye and had diminished vision in her left because of shrapnel lodged in her brain. Her fiancé, Eric, had died in the accident. Amelia was called in to consult on her case. Lizzie accidentally smothered her two month old, Natasha, while breastfeeding. Amelia and Pete were able to resuscitate her.
Amelia called in Janet, Eric's mother, who lives in San Diego. She came up to take Natasha home with her. She said she didn't find out about the pregnancy until later, when she found a half-written letter. Janet agreed to wait until they operated to try to restore her vision, but said if they weren't able to, she'd be taking Natasha back to San Diego with her.
An MRI showed that the shrapnel was wedged near her optic nerve. Amelia said if she operated, Lizzie could lose what vision she had left. Despite this, Lizzie wanted the surgery. When Lizzie learned that Janet was there, she became panicked and said that she wanted to take Natasha, she always had.
After surgery, Lizzie's bandages were removed and she talked about being able to see things around the room. Janet said she was happy for her and left. Janet cried because she said it wasn't supposed to be like that. Eric was supposed to come home and it was all supposed to be different. She left the hospital and Amelia told Pete she knew that Lizzie was really blind and he'd coached her to fool Janet to get her to leave.
Before leaving for San Diego, Janet came back to say goodbye to Natasha first. While she was there, Pete confessed that Lizzie was totally blind now. Janet wanted to take Lizzie to court over Natasha, but Pete said that they both loved Eric and they both love Natasha and Natasha needed both of them. Janet said she could stay until Lizzie got more comfortable taking care of Natasha by herself. They agreed to try that.
