History[]
Early Life[]
Lucas grew up in Connecticut as part of the Shepherd family.[3] Despite pressure from his family, he didn't want to become a doctor until he was in a bad car accident his junior year of college, which gave him a new appreciation for the doctors who saved his life.[4]
Internship at Grey Sloan[]
The day after a tornado hit Seattle, Lucas started off his internship at Grey Sloan. He first met his fellow interns Jules Millin, Mika Yasuda, and Benson Kwan in the locker room and greeted them. He introduced himself as Lucas and stated they could call him Luke, but not Skywalker. The others didn't respond so Lucas asked if they were nervous. Mika commented he didn't know how to shut up. Benson scoffed at him and said he was liking his odds after sizing up the competition. Lucas was stunned as he'd only said hello. Mika called him Skywalker and told him not to worry as Jules had already slept with an attending. The group then headed out to meet interim Chief Meredith Grey for her opening speech in the OR. Simone Griffith arrived late, prompting Meredith to advise the interns to learn how to expect the unexpected.
Afterward, Amelia Shepherd took the group of interns to the ICU to examine an inordinate number of patients who suffered catastrophic brain injury when the tornado blew a bus off of a cliff. Lucas asked her how many patients there were. She reminded him to to raise his hand before speaking and then answered that there were 14 patients. He asked how many of those were organ donors, yet forgot to raise his hand. Simone did and then asked the same question. Amelia said nine.[5]
Personality[]
He is the charming black sheep of his family. Likeable to a fault, he has a great mind, but doesn't have the grades to match. He's determined to prove himself as a surgeon, just like many in his family that have come before him, but he will have to stop relying on his people skills and put in the work.
Relationships[]
Romantic[]
Simone Griffith[]
He expressed his interest in Simone, his co-intern, and they kissed a few times. But when Simone's ex-fiancé, Trey, showed up, she got mixed feelings. The night after Trey came to see Simone, Lucas and Simone kissed again but he asked her if she was in love with her ex, not wanting to be in the middle of their relationship but pointed out that Trey doesn't see her, or sees an old version of her. She told him that her whole family loves Trey and Lucas left her bedroom. Later that night, she accepted Trey's marriage proposal.[6]
After developing a close friendship with Lucas, Simone later asked him to be her man of honor, explaining that he knew her better than anyone at work, her family, or her former residency.[7] He then decided he couldn't do it because of how he felt about her and asked Jules to be Simone's Maid of Honor instead.[8]
On the day of her wedding, Griffith learned through her grandmother that her mother was engaged to another man when she met Simone's father and she ended that engagement to marry Simone's dad. Simone's grandmother, thinking Simone was her mother, said Simone shouldn't feel pressured to get married to someone who doesn't understand her or see her. As she prepared to walk down the aisle, Simone walked away because she realized she couldn't marry Trey. Then she went to the hospital to find Lucas and tell him she didn't get married.[9]
Cara Ford[]
He had a short fling with an internal medicine intern after Simone got engaged.[10]
Familial[]
He is Derek and Amelia's nephew and he was Derek's favorite nephew.[5]
His family describes Lucas and Amelia as the screw ups of the family.
Friendships[]
Lucas lives with Mika Yasuda and Simone Griffith.
Mika realized very early on that there was something between Lucas and Simone and confessed to Lucas that she was "Team Skywalker."
Professional[]
Nick Marsh[]
Dr. Marsh is the Residency Director from the hospital and gave advice to Lucas that helped him on his first day, after Adams made a mistake, telling him to end his day better than it started and to remember what to improve for the next day.[5] Working with the interns, Nick noticed how Lucas exhibited lack of attention to details, hyperfocus, poor organization skills, and improved performance when important tasks were broken down. When Marsh gave instructions to Adams about a patient and he forgot a step – thus resulting in the patient going into shock – he told Adams to fix his ADHD medication, under the impression that Lucas was aware of his ADHD and just needed an adjustment to his medication; however, at the end of the day, when Nick went to apologize for calling out his ADHD, Adams told him that he had never had meds or a diagnosis and after reading about it, it all came to a new perspective. Dr. Marsh told him that he had it himself and was diagnosed in college. He thought his career as a surgeon was over but he got the help he needed it became something he managed like any other thing. They had a little laugh when Nick said that "typical is so boring". Lucas asked him what to do next and Nick advised him to get checked out.[11]
After losing a patient whom Lucas had helped decide to have surgery, Nick explained to Lucas that people with ADHD feel the losses very deeply and that he should see the good he did by not giving up on the patient and focus on that. Lucas got frustrated because even though his family is full of doctors, no one noticed his ADHD while Nick did notice it. Nick comforted him by saying that sometimes parents see their kids through their own experiences and having overachievers as parents, they expected for Lucas to be too and when he wasn't, they were too busy pushing him to live up to his potential to see why he couldn't. Lucas then told that he wished that Nick would win the Catherine Fox Award because he felt like a failure and if Nick won, he'd have hope for himself.[12]
