Malan Vasconcellos is a patient whose shunt failed.
History[]
Malan was diagnosed at birth with congenital hydrocephalus. She had a shunt placed, but it failed. By the time she was eight, she was on her fifth shunt. Her mother, Maria-Flor, brought her to the hospital one day, concerned that her shunt had failed again, because she wasn't acting like herself. She expressed concern about Malan getting another shunt only to have it fail again. They ran tests and confirmed that her shunt had failed, but instead of replacing it, they decided to use computer guidance to do an endoscopic ventriculostomy, creating a space for the fluid to drain without using a shunt. The surgery was successful.
Notes and Trivia[]
