Mercedes Hernandez is a patient who was scared to come to the hospital for fear of ICE.
History[]
Mercedes has diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome. She was getting treatment at Elena Bailey Memorial Clinic for Reproductive Health, but missed an appointment, so Benson Kwan and Jules Millin decided to go see her at her home. They talked to her mother, Paula, who said that Mercedes was very sick. Mercedes apologized for not calling to say she couldn't make her appointment. Her son, Javi, had a half day at school and Paula couldn't watch him. When Mercedes tried to get up to offer the doctors a drink, she collapsed. They checked her blood sugar and found it was very high. As Benson prepared to give her insulin to bring it down, Jules accidentally brushed her foot, which made her flinch. They examined her injured toe and found it was deeply infected. They tried to get her to go to the hospital, but she refused and finally admitted she was worried that ICE would come find her there, as people had spotted ICE near the hospital and a friend's brother had been taken. Benson agreed to give her antibiotics and try to debride her wound at her home. He began this process, but stopped when her toe fell off. When she still refused to go to the hospital, Benson called Bailey, who brought an ambulance and moved Mercedes out there to clean out her wound. She then made Mercedes promise to have someone pick up her prescriptions for her.
