Michael Dixon was the father of Emmett Dixon and a candidate for mayor opposite Travis Montgomery. He was also previously the fire chief for Seattle Fire Department.
History[]
Letting the Mayor's Son Go[]
When he was a cop, he pulled over the mayor's son, who was drunk. Instead of arresting him, he told the son to go straight home, knowing that would earn him a favor from the mayor. Instead of going straight home, the son caused an accident which killed a family of five. He spent only a single night in jail before being released. Dixon later cashed in that favor to be named the fire chief.[1]
Becoming Chief[]
Michael was chosen to replace the late Lucas Ripley as fire chief in Seattle. He gave a press release promising good things for Seattle under his leadership. Then he visited Station 19, where they made bad first impressions by mocking him without knowing he was standing behind them. He declared his intentions to use specifically Maya to generate good press for the fire department. After Station 19 responded to a fire at a store where a set of fireworks had been set off, he lauded the department's efforts in that case during a press conference.[2]
While they were playing ping pong, Ben proposed to Dixon that he sponsor a program to staff ambulances with physicians, bringing the hospital to the public. He rejected Ben's idea and then left to go to a meeting. After watching Martin die, Ben went back to Dixon and asked him what he had to do to make the physician response team happen. He asked Dixon to give half the money and said he'd get Grey Sloan to make a fellowship to cover the other half.[3]
New Captain and Pruitt's Cancer[]
Dixon was pleased when Maya was named the new captain of station 19 and supported her when she gave her first big speech to the team. Later, he ran into Pruitt, who was having trouble getting his cancer treatment covered even though the cancer was almost definitely a result of his work as a firefighter. Dixon brushed off Pruitt and his concerns.[4]
PRT Launch[]
Dixon came to the station the day the PRT launched, posing for photographs and preparing for the press. He also introduced his son, Emmett Dixon, the newest recruit for station 19. He asked Sullivan to take it easy on Emmett, because he wasn't a natural talent even though he worked hard.[5]
Kyle Rexton[]
When Dixon learned that station 19 was responding to Kyle Rexton holding a knife on a shop owner, he tried to get Maya to back her team off so PD could step in with their negotiator. She refused, saying Sullivan had unique insight because he and the subject were both veterans and her team was handling it. Later, Dixon went back to Maya and told her to get his son off the scene. She refused, saying he's part of her team. Dixon then ordered the SWAT team to approach and said PD would be making the calls once SWAT was in position. Before this could happen, Sullivan peacefully led Kyle out, where he was arrested and the grenade he was holding was neutralized. When they returned to the station, Dixon told Maya that if she put his son in danger again, he'd bury her in desk duty.[6]
Pruitt's Protest[]
When Pruitt lined up boots on the steps of city hall to represent the firefighters who had died of cancer within the last year, Dixon was upset at the display.[7]
Lunch and Five-Alarm Fire[]
On Emmett's day off, Dixon planned to have dinner with him and his girlfriend, Alicia, and show her around the station. They had dinner along with Travis, who had come to the station to get his forgotten headphones. At the lunch, Dixon made it clear he intended for Emmett to make lieutenant within six months and asked Travis if he could do it on his own or if he'd have to pull some strings. Travis said a few decades on the job might toughen him up. After a fire in the city was upgraded to a three-alarm, Dixon excused himself to make an appearance at the scene. Later, after it was upgraded again to a level-five, all firefighters in the city were called to the scene. Dixon told the arriving members of station 19 to stay safe and not get killed because it would be murder on the city's insurance.[8]
Investigating Maya[]
Following Pruitt's death, Dixon launched an investigation into Maya and her decision to allow Pruitt to go onto to the roof where he fell to his death. When he arrived at the station, he found Travis posing for a calendar and believed Maya had planned that to garner sympathy. He then invited the whole team to his country club to celebrate his son's engagement to Alicia. He then proceeded into Maya's office to question her, along with Jerry Cooke. He asked Maya to go over what had happened and she explained what Pruitt had chosen. When she became emotional speaking about it, he told her to pull herself together and not make him regret endorsing a female captain. She informed him that her emotion was not a weakness but a strength. She said that there are athletes who cry when the win a gold medal and she says that he is asking her to relive the day the her hero died and she lived and she will not apologize for her emotions. She says that her ability to care for her members while on the job is something that she does every day and she says she doesn’t feel bad about what Pruitt did. Once the questioning was finished, Maya reminded Dixon that during the same call, Sullivan left his post and entered the building, but he couldn't reprimand him because it would reflect poorly on himself, as he'd appointed Sullivan. She told him he could order her back to work or order her to do whatever and she'd do it.[9]
Sullivan Coming Clean[]
Dixon was annoyed when Sullivan stopped him from going home because he had something to tell him. Thinking it was about Pruitt's funeral, he finally agreed to fund it. Sullivan then confessed that he and Andy were married. He additionally confessed to stealing drugs from the PRT and overdosing while on the job. After hearing his confession, Dixon made it clear to Sullivan that he expected him to keep it to himself. If it got out, he'd have a drug scandal marring his first year as Chief and made it clear he'd turn them over to the feds, risking prison time for Sullivan, Ben, and Bailey, if it got out. As Sullivan left, Dixon told him Sullivan owed him one and he wouldn't forget that.[10]
In exchange for keeping quiet about Sullivan's theft and overdose, Dixon tried to push through permits for a friend's new business without inspections. Sullivan decided not to let that happen and went to the Civil Services Commission and confessed to what he had done and detailed Dixon's corruption.[11]
Hospital Fire and Arrest[]
Dixon came to check in at the scene of a series of explosions at Pacific Northwest General Hospital. While Maya was trying to report on what happened, he instead walked away to talk to the press. While he was at the scene, talking to the press, two officers came and informed him they had a warrant for his arrest. They arrested him on charges of fraud and extortion.[12]
He revealed at Sullivan's hearing that all charges against him had been dropped.[13]
Sullivan's Hearing[]
Dixon was called on to testify at Sullivan's hearing to determine if he would be allowed to continue to be a firefighter. He was quick to shift any blame off himself, claiming he didn't report it immediately because he was holding his own internal investigation. He also insinuated that Sullivan used the fact that Emmett is gay to keep him quiet on the issue. He also implied Sullivan had been using drugs during other calls, including the one where Pruitt Herrera died.
After testifying, he told Ben to let Sullivan go down and not go down with him.[14]
Warning Maya[]
In the wake of Dean's lawsuit against the Seattle police, Dixon came to the station and told Maya to put a muzzle on Dean if she valued her career and their relationship with the police department. She told him the police department should be the one mending fences, not the fire department.[15]
Seattle Protests[]
In the wake of George Floyd's death, Dixon appeared on television making a statement on behalf of the police department. He said the police department stood in support of their communities. Then he knelt on camera.[16]
As the protests continued, Dixon appeared on television again, telling people that protesting was not the way to get their voices heard.[17]
Crisis One[]
On the first day of Crisis One, Dixon spoke to Sean Beckett and expressed his excitement over Crisis One, because it meant PD didn't have to respond to "mental health crap" anymore.[18]
Birthday Dinner[]
Emmett and Travis came over on Dixon's birthday to have dinner. While they were looking through old photos of Emmett, Dixon shifted the conversation to SFD, which he believed needed more conservativism. Travis challenged him, but they were cut off by Kitty and Emmett calling them for dinner. They ate in awkward silence until Kitty brought up Alicia and her desire to have grandchildren. This led to even more awkwardness, then Dixon talking about his plans to run for mayor and his plan to shut down Crisis One if he were elected. He and Travis argued about it while Kitty tried to get them all to eat cake and Emmett told Travis it wasn't worth it. During this argument, Dixon accused Travis of taking Emmett off his path and making him gay.[19]
Running for Mayor[]
Not long after his birthday, Dixon held a press conference during which he announced his candidacy for mayor. In his speech, he promised to clean up Seattle. That same day, he also visited the scene of a fire, where his friend, Mr. Phillips' building was in flames. When firefighters discovered that there were several women trapped inside the building and Mr. Phillips hadn't said anything about it, they rescued them. Dixon said that the women would have their opportunity to tell their story and so would Mr. Phillips, telling the firefighters not to jump to conclusions. Dixon then spoke privately to Mr. Phillips, assuring him they'd take care of it.[20]
Floor Collapse and Death[]
Dixon attended the Firefighter's Ball as a plus-one of his wife, Kitty, who was coordinating the event. After the floor of the ballroom collapsed, Dixon became trapped under a slab of concrete. After efforts to extricate him by Travis and other firefighters, he coded when the slab was removed and was unable to be resuscitated.[21]
Relationships[]
Romantic[]
He was married to Kitty Dixon.
Familial[]
His son, Emmett, was a firefighter.[22] He told Sullivan that Emmett is not a natural talent, but he's a hard worker.[23]
After Emmett came out to him, he refused to speak to him, though he outed him publicly to push his own agenda at Sullivan's hearing.[24]
Friendships[]
Gary[]
He was friends with Gary. When Gary started a new business, Dixon promised to take care of the permits.[25]
Career[]
He was the fire chief for Seattle Fire Department. Prior to this, he was a police officer. His time as fire chief ended when he was arrested for fraud and extortion.[26]
After the charges against him were dropped, he accepted a position as Deputy Chief of Operations for the Seattle Metropolitan Police Department.[27]
