Night Moves is the sixth episode of the twenty-first season and the 436th overall episode of Grey's Anatomy.

Teddy and Owen plan a date night that gets derailed in more ways than one, while Jo struggles to do it all at home. Mika adds more to her plate to make up for taking time off to be with her sister, and Levi is faced with a monumental decision.

Full Summary[]

Teddy and Owen are at a fancy restaurant. Before ordering, she fixes a bolus order that she forgot about on her phone. David Beckman, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Grey Sloan, and his wife Cass Beckman arrive as the two men are paged for multiple traumas. David suggests the two women stay so the reservation isn't wasted. Cass takes Owen's place as the men leave.

Jo is cleaning around the penthouse. Link comes down and says Luna still has a fever. He suggests staying home but Jo says he's on call and she can handle two sick kids. He finds his laptop hasn't charged because Jo unplugged it to charge her phone while dealing with a vomiting child. She resumes cleaning as he heads out.

Jules brings new blankets for Mika and Chloe in the latter's room. Chloe has started her chemo regimen. Mika has been working a lot to make up for the work she missed out on. Jules tells Mika to get some sleep and leaves. Chloe tells Mika that Jules is quality.

Monica is surprised to see Levi on the peds floor. He came to check on Ofelia. Her leg is looking good so hopefully she can be moved to rehab tonight. Monica heard that Levi was offered the research position in Texas, which he hasn't officially accepted. She thinks it's good for him to take his time deciding. While it's a great opportunity, it doesn't guarantee a peds fellowship afterward. Levi is paged by Webber. He asks if Monica would take the position if she were him. She would, but she does love tex mex.

Simone runs into Lucas as he's on his way to an on-call room to crash. He hit his 80 hours for the week. Benson comes up with several ER consults for drunk patients. Lucas gets on the elevator and says he'll see Simone in the morning. Simone casually tells him she loves him as the doors close. She's shocked while Benson mocks her.

Jules and Winston check in on Darren Riley, who is hemodynamically normal except some tachycardia in the last hour. Winston has good news: he's leaving now to procure a lung for Darren. Jules will have to monitor the entire floor while he's gone.

Levi meets with Bailey and Richard. They know about the research position after they were called to get a letter of good standing. Richard then says they would like to offer him a position of general surgery attending before he makes his decision. They hand him a note with the usual generous starting salary, with room to negotiate. Levi wasn't expecting it. Bailey decides that he'll be acting as attending while on her service today.

Amelia runs into Link in the lobby. Her last surgery got pushed. After hearing about Scout, she decides to pick up her son so Jo has it easier. Link asks her not to tell Jo that he thinks that's a good idea since Jo is trying to do it all.

After finishing up on a patient, Simone wonders if she should it again while Lucas has more time to say it back. Benson says lack of time wasn't the issue. Benson is pretty sure it'll be weird now. Bailey cautions them to get ready for incoming traumas. Levi arrives in the ER dressed in navy scrubs. He walks up to Taryn to tell her about their early offer. Taryn wonders how James feels about Texas. Levi says he was paged away right after he told him. He's not sure what to do.

Levi and Benson meet the other doctors in the ambulance bay. Bailey is enthusiastic about Levi's scrubs change. A scaffolding collapsed at a concert venue. The first rig brings in Joni Filson, 17, who has an unstable pelvis. Joni asks about her boyfriend, Vaughn, as Monica and Simone move Joni to a trauma room. The next rig delivers Vaughn Bishop, 19, who fell from the scaffolding and has a penetrating abdominal injury. Levi takes charge and directs the paramedics to trauma room 2.

A waiter ignores Cass while she and Teddy struggle with the fancy menu. Teddy's best meal ever was when she ate beans on flatbread with Owen. She explains everything tastes better after military rations. Cass is amazed that a poised woman like Teddy was in the military. Teddy says she'd take a burger over this fancy menu any day. They decide to ditch this place.

Jo convinces Scout to take a little sip when the doorbell rings. It's Amelia. Jo thinks Link sent Amelia to rescue her. Amelia decides to take Scout home while Jo repeatedly says she's got everything under control. Amelia goes to leave until Scout throws up over himself and her. Luna then starts crying upstairs. Jo says she'll draw Scout a bath.

Link joins Monica and Simone in the trauma room. Joni's chest X-ray looks clear. Joni says tonight was the regional championship for air guitar. The scaffolding fell right into the crowd. Vaughn definitely would have made it to the final. FAST was negative and with her BP stable, they decide to take Joni up to CT. Joni asks the doctors not to tell her parents about Vaughn, whom they don't like. Monica has Simone arrange the trauma scan orders.

Owen joins Bailey in Vaughn's trauma room. A piece of scaffolding has penetrated his abdomen. His blood pressure is responding well to fluids. Owen notices Levi is in charge. Levi has him arrange the CT orders. If they can stabilize him, they scan him first before heading to the OR. His blood pressure tanks and there's blood in the Foley catheter, so Levi decides to skip the scan.

Simone informs Joni's parents that Joni's in radiology now. Moments later, Gish, a friend of Vaughn and Joni's arrives in the ER and asks the desk nurse about Vaughn. Joni's parents know Gish, who starts talking about the accident and Vaughn crushing Joni. Joni's father wants to strangle Vaughn. Gish says he built the scaffolding so Vaughn could shred off the rafters, so it is him they should be mad at. Joni's father wonders where they went wrong. Simone takes the parents to the family waiting area, leaving Taryn to deal with Gish. She takes him to the other air musicians.

Jules is surprised to find Mika wandering around the hall. She gave a patient her number in a moment of stupidity and he texted her 911 to get a hot dog. Also, she imagines the worst possible outcomes for Chloe when she closes her eyes. Jules says she's getting the best care and Mika being sleep deprived won't change anything. They rush to respond to a rapid response call for the ICU. Darren is in distress. The pump isn't working properly. Nurse Karen rushes out to find a new one while Jules and Mika switch over to the emergency hand crank to prevent Darren from coding. As they work, they urge Darren to stay calm. Darren reports back that the ECLS coordinator left with the keys to the supply closet, so it'll be a few hours before they can get a new pump. Jules is paged for a triple A patient being tachycardic, while Karen says another patient of Winston's has blood in his pleurovac. Mika offers to take over the crank from Jules. She assures Jules that she's got this.

Over burgers and fries, Cass tells Teddy about coming home to a mess after performing a difficult facial reconstruction at work, and how David still wonders why she's not in the mood. Teddy shares she and Owen are scheduling sex without much success. Cass is happy to let her vent. She shares that after a rough patch a few years back, she and David decided to open up their marriage. It worked wonders for them. Teddy wonders how she finds the time to find other people to sleep with. Cass says that's what tennis is for. They order another round.

Amelia has bathed and changed Scout, whom she put down for a short nap before taking him home. She thanks Jo for the change of clothes and tells Jo to give herself some grace. It's impossible to do it all, even without a sick kid. Jo shares that Luna was crying this morning and asked for Jessica, her daycare teacher. Working 80 hours a week, Jo only has time to feed, clothe, and bathe Luna. Jo starts crying. Amelia says there are no robust memories until the age of 7. Jo wanted to give Luna the mother she herself never had, but instead, she's at daycare all day forming a secure attachment to Jessica. She then wonders how out loud how she's going to do this with two more kids. Amelia is delighted to hear the news. Jo then heads upstairs to tend to a crying Luna.

In the OR, Bailey urges Levi to keep Kwan involved. The small bowel is perforated. Levi decides to pack first and work quadrant by quadrant, saving the scaffold for last. Owen can pull it out slowly and the rest of them will attack problems as they arise.

Joni talks about how parents think it's stupid to fall for a musician. Simone guesses they just worry she'll have regrets. Joni doesn't see how she could ever regret Vaughn. Link joins Monica and Simone in the booth and diagnoses a type 3 pelvic fracture with active bleeding. Monica thinks they should embolize before Link repairs the fracture. Joni once again asks about Vaughn's status.

Jules checks in on Mika, who has found the right speed. Darren is doing fine. Jules offers to take over but Mika likes being distracted. She also wanted to do something for Jules after all she's done for her. Jules receives word that the pump is on its way. She'll complete her rounds by the time it's here. She leaves after checking if Mika's okay with continuing.

Levi finishes up fixing the small bowel tear. As Owen pulls out the rod, the kidney starts bleeding. Levi takes a minute to decide whether or not they should resect the kidney or try and salvage it. Kwan wonders if Owen or Bailey should step in. Levi decides to repair the renal artery and proceed with a renorrhaphy. Bailey can't help but comment this beats the hell out of research as Levi gets to work.

Amelia has made a toast for Jo. She says it's impossible to be a mom and resident at the same time. Jo really wants that big family but she's worried she's messing it up. Amelia wonders where Link is in all of this. Jo says they haven't been in the best place lately. Amelia says she had always been bothered by the friendship between Jo and Link when she and Link were together. She thinks Link had always lied to himself, wanting Jo all along. Jo scoffs. She had to listen to him talk about being in love with Amelia for months. Amelia thinks maybe he was proposing repeatedly in order to force them into something because he was scared to leave. Amelia gets up to check on Scout.

Link, Monica, and Simone are in the IR suite to perform the embolization while they debate the concept of air guitar. Monica appreciates how Vaughn and his friends know what they want and are not afraid to get it, no matter how bonkers it is. She steps aside to let Simone coil the next bleeding. She pulls it off swiftly, revealing she has been practicing. Monica allows her to continue.

Jules has attached the new pump. She can't believe Mika has cranked the handle for so long. Darren desats and he starts seizing. Mika successfully intubates. Darren's blood pressure keeps dropping. The ECMO pump is on but the flows keep cutting out. Jules calls Winston and updates him on the situation. The X-ray reveals that the heart is herniating into the now-empty right side of the chest cavity. Winston starts talking about how they need to pump air into the chest before the connection is lost. They connect a large syringe to the chest tube. Nurse Karen suggests they wait for an attending but everyone is operating, so waiting means that Darren dies. They take a new X-ray after every pump until they can see the heart start to move back to its rightful place. Darren's BP normalizes.

Cass and Teddy bond over the excessive communication from their kids' schools. They are both enjoying the night. Teddy's first inclination was to go home, but Cass tells her she's glad she stayed. Teddy says she thought she and Owen needed a break from the kids, but maybe she needed a break from Owen. Cass leans in and kisses Teddy, who backs out. Cass admits she misread the situation. Teddy says her and Owen's marriage is very closed. Cass tells her to forget about it. They both sip from their wine. Teddy decides to get a ride home.

Levi meets James in the hallway. He repaired a kidney. James spent hours talking to an adult leukemia patient, who had a lot to work through. James asks if he's thought about Texas. Levi thinks there may be more for him here. Webber offered him an attending position, and also, there is this guy.

In the ICU, Monica tells Joni that there will be some pain. Link adds that sticking to PT will help with that. Simone advises her to skip air guitar concerts for a while. Joni's parents are happy to hear her say that. The attendings leave Simone to order labs and finish the post-op note. Joni receives a video call from Vaughn and has Simone answer it. She holds up the phone so Joni and Vaughn can chat, much to Joni's parents' dismay. Meanwhile, in Vaughn's room, Gish starts playing mood music. Joni's parents leave the room as Joni starts playing air guitar. Vaughn excitedly tells Benson that he taught Joni that riff.

Winston has arrived in the CCU. Darren is brought to the OR. Winston compliments Jules's work and allows her to scrub in to do the bronchial anastomosis to reward her. Jules starts telling him in detail what happened tonight.

A running Levi arrives on the peds floor. He is just in time to catch Ofelia leaving with her parents. Nanette says they couldn't have left without saying goodbye to him, as Ofelia has been talking about him all night. Ofelia made him a drawing of him fixing her leg on the helicopter so he can remember. Levi is moved by her gesture. He wishes he had something for her but she says she'll never forget him anyway. Levi watches as the Lopez family leaves.

Jules finds Mika in the scrub room. Jules gave up her spot so Mika could scrub in. She deserves it. Mika admits she misses Jules. The thing that started between them, it shook Mika up in a good way. Jules regrets that Mika is already scrubbed in because she really wants to kiss her, for a long time. Mika agrees to a rain check and then heads into the OR.

Winston performs the lung transplant with Mika assisting him. The lung inflates perfectly. Winston compliments Mika's work.

Levi runs into Bailey and Webber, who heard about his heroic save. It has reinforced their belief that he is fit for the attending position. He has come a long way since his first day here as a sub-i. Levi says that is because of them. Levi says he would like to be an attending here, but his love is peds. He loves that saving a kid means not just saving a life, but a lifetime. If he's learned anything from them, it's to have passion for your work. That is why he accepted the research position in Texas. Bailey congratulates him. Richard tells him to go make them proud.

Link comes home and asks about Luna, who's better but still down. Jo knows this is not what Link wanted and she doesn't want to force him into something. It's going to be chaos, especially if Link leaves her, like everyone else has done. She doesn't want to do this alone. Link is offended that she would place him in the same group of people in her life who have been awful to her. He would never back out.

Teddy's printer wakes Owen up from his nap on her couch. Teddy tells Owen that she and Cass ditched the restaurant and went to the bar next door, where Cass kissed her after they had a couple of glasses of wine. Owen asks if Teddy kissed her back. Teddy says no, Cass just got the wrong idea. Owen is not amused and wonders how that could have happened. Teddy is upset that he would think she provoked it. He leaves for rounds.

In the morning, Chloe wakes up to Mika doing some charting in her chair. Mika tells Chloe that she wound up working but had a great night anyway. Mika tells Chloe they'll go home.

Benson calls Molly but hangs up when he reaches her voicemail.

Simone finds Lucas in on-call room. He didn't sleep great. Simone says she's normally very poised, but her brain scrambles when she's around him, and she sometimes says things. He understands it happens. But she does love him. It's okay if it's too soon for him to say it back, but it is how she feels. He kisses her until he's paged, which reminds him he's late for rounds. He runs around but briefly returns to tell her that he loves her, too.

Taryn meets Levi at the exit. To celebrate the end of the night shift, she wants to get fries at Joe's. Levi actually still has to round before heading home. He was waiting for her to tell her something. He took the job in Texas. She tears up as he assures her they'll text all the time and watch still watch their trashy TV shows together. As she cries, she recalls telling Bailey and Webber in her residency interview that she wasn't there to make friends. She was focused and cutthroat, and then she met him. He's her best friend. Levi says they'll be best friends always. Taryn clarifies these are happy tears. She hugs him. She's glad that he is following his dream. Levi was nervous to tell her. She says she's nothing compared to James.

Chloe is dozing off in the passenger seat while asking Mika to get doughnuts on the way home. Mika herself struggles to stay awake. Chloe opens her eyes when Mika doesn't respond to her request, only to see her asleep behind the wheel. She yells for Mika as they crash.

Darren remained on ECMO as he awaited his lung transplant. Winston came to tell him he was going to pick up a lung. His pump malfunctioned while he waited, forcing them to covert to a hand crank as they waited for a replacement, which was expected to take a few hours. After the new pump was placed, he became unstable again, forcing them to intubate. They did a chest x-ray, which showed that his heart was herniating into the chest cavity where his lung had been. They pumped air into his chest until his symptoms resolved and he stabilized. When Winston arrived, he was taken into surgery for his lung transplant, which went well.

Joni, 17, was injured when a scaffolding collapsed and her boyfriend fell on her. She had an unstable pelvis, so the paramedics placed a binder. She was told she would need physical therapy.

Levi decided to try to save it instead of removing it. They repaired the renal artery and then they did a renorrhaphy. He was stable and awake after his surgery.
