“ | Medical textbooks from the Middle Ages contained a chart called "The Sphere of Life and Death." Doctors used it to predict health outcomes based only on a patient's name. The sphere was based on numerology, the Zodiac, the moon and starts. It's pseudo-science compared to modern metrics. But humans have always craved certainty. Diagnosis, prognosis, genetic predisposition. They're all ways of placing ourselves on the sphere. We ask science to protect us from the simplest fact of life: it's full of surprises. We trust science to predict the future. But even so, surprises are the only thing we can count on. Sometimes surprises are good. They lift you up and make life exquisite. But then there's the other kind of surprise, when the bottom drops out. However desperate you might be, don't look to the stars. Because they can't help you now. | ” |

Full Summary[]
Through text, Lucas asks Simone for dinner tomorrow night. She replies she's not sure of her schedule yet. She finds Jules practising stitches on a chicken breast in the kitchen. Jules has a fem-pop bypass with Ndugu today.
Link and Jo are struggling to find a venue for their wedding.
An excited Jules finds Winston at the hospital. He postponed the bypass as the patient's INR was too high. Winston catches Richard staring and has Jules go and remove a chest tube from another patient. Winston then assures Richard that there is nothing going on between him and Jules. Richard is not convinced.
Benson congratulates Lucas on his not having to remediate. Lucas thought he lost the travel mug Benson is using. Benson is just using it until Lucas moves back in. He's surprised to hear that Simone hasn't asked Lucas. Bailey calls over Benson as she needs assistance. She needs him to sell a prospective intern on joining the program to fill up Lucas's spot. A vacant spot would be a red flag for next year's applicants and also more work for the residents.
Lucas presents the case of Dylan Gatlin, 9, who was treated by Monica for a radial fracture a few weeks ago. The work-up led to the incidental finding of a cavernous angioma in the brainstem. She's scheduled for a resection this afternoon. Monica checks if Dylan is ready. As an expedition scout, she always is. Dylan is working a trail map in order to get her orientation badge on her next campout. Amelia says they're making a trail map of her brain, which will help her track the neural tracts in the OR and get her to the angioma safely. Dylan is not excited about having to go for another MRI again.
Jo meets Mariana and Edgar in an exam room. Mariana was sent from the clinic due to severe cramping. She has a history of endometriosis but this pain is next level. She also reported blood in her urine. Jo examines Mariana as Edgar holds her hand. They are getting married in four days so Mariana doesn't want Edgar to call her family yet. They are getting married on the day their mothers met in the OB ward. Edgar and Mariana were preemies together in the NICU. Jo then realizes they are hospital's famous NICU couple. She passes by their engagement photo every day. Jo orders labs and an MRI to get a closer look at what's going on.
Richard, Winston, and Jules do an intake on Spencer Purdy, who was in a car accident. As he's moved to a trauma room, he says the rent money is in his wallet and they can't be late again. Winston and Jules then discover that his lung is herniating through his chest wall. Winston orders more tests. Jules doesn't care about the bypass anymore.
Benson is less annoyed about his assignment when the prospective intern turns out to be Amara West, a beautiful woman. She went to medical school in Granada and has trouble matching in the US. Benson says he went to med school in Saint Kitts and takes Amara to show what their program has to offer.
Spencer's FAST exam is negative. The X-ray reveals a left-sided pneumothorax and a couple broken ribs. Winston will watch Jules as she reduces the hernia. Mike Purdy, Spencer's father, arrives. Spencer then sees his injury in the reflection of the lamp and loses consciousness. Spencer's father is escorted to the waiting room.
Simone and Lucas wait for Dylan's MRI results. Simone talks about how her father didn't want her to become an expedition scout. She thinks he just wanted her at home. Speaking of home, Lucas asks if she and Kwan have decided yet about Yasuda's room. Simone says they are still figuring it out. Dylan wonders if it'll hurt when they cut her brain open. Simone assures her she will be asleep the whole time. Amelia and Monica arrive as the scans come up. This kind of imaging gives them a clarity they have never had before, making the surgery possible. They'll map the images onto Dylan's brain in the OR.
Taryn finishes briefing Link about his patients as they arrive in the OB/GYN ward. Jo tells Link that it looks like Mariana and Edgar's wedding is off. He doesn't know them, much to her surprise. Mariana's endometriosis has taken over her pelvis and implanted in her pubic symphysis. Jo has never seen bone invasion like this before. Link is eager to help.
Jules and Winston inform Mike that Spencer is on his way to pre-op. Mike doesn't understand why Spencer always has to drive this fast. Jules understands living paycheck to paycheck and the importance of paying rent. They hand Mike the bag of Spencer's belonging. Mike is glad to see the Mariners hat that Spencer always wears. Spencer's a good kid, no thanks to him. Winston says they'll come find him once they have an update. As they head back inside, they see Mike taking the cash from Spencer's wallet. Jules wants to go confront him, but Winston stops her.
Amelia and Monica arrive to take Dylan to the OR. Dylan starts panicking and says she wants to go home. She's really scared about the surgery. She begs her mother not to let them take her.
