Full Summary[]
The firefighters of station 19 and Carina watch fireworks from the roof of the station. They cheer for the Phoenix Fair. Maya says two days are done and there are two more to go. Carina says the fair is a celebration of life and survival and vaccines and the ability to be together and hug and be human. She hugs Maya as she says this. Maya says Seattle has risen and asks what's to hate. Dean says he hates stilt walkers. Ben agrees. Jack hates pub crawlers and Vic hates crowds. Travis hates fireworks, which shocks the group. Ben hates people who point out the flaws in fireworks. Maya says tomorrow's probably going to be another busy day, so she suggests they all try to get some sleep. As they walk back inside, Ben asks Maya when they forgive Sullivan. It's destroying team unity. Maya says Ben should forgive him if he has a problem, but Ben says Maya knows when she forgives him, everyone does. Until then, he sits by himself.
Maya, Carina, and Andy burst into Chief McCallister's office. He questions if Maya's wearing a wedding dress. She says she is because she just got married and received his very sexist email and it threatened to ruin her night. Instead, she came to his office. McCallister reminds her why she was suspended and thinks she's blaming sexism for that. She said she wasn't, just shining a light on it in hopes of creating real change. Andy says her father was written up multiple times for insubordination and was never relieved of his duties. She knows other male fire captains who have done the same thing. McCallister says she disobeyed a direct order, but Andy says it was to save a child's life. Carina further says that the child lived. McCallister says that's not how they do things, but Andy says at SFD, they do what's right. Maya won't accept her demotion and says her team won't either. McCallister relents and says she can keep 19, but Andy's reassigned to 23 effective immediately. If her team can't follow orders, they'll all be reassigned within a week. He's glad Zaza lived, but if he hadn't, the lawsuit could have put the station out of business. Maya agrees to step down pending investigation. Maya says Andy would be the best replacement in her absence, but he says she's still being transferred to 23 and reports there on Monday. She's a good firefighter, but if she keeps invoking her father's name, she'll never get out of his shadow.
Sean Beckett gets water out of the fridge. Ben and Jack come in from the firework viewing. Beckett likes that because of the fireworks, he got the gym all to himself. After he's walked away, Jack says he keeps trying to like Beckett, but he makes it so hard. Vic has given up on trying to like him.
Over at SFD Station 23, Dan Barnes tells the story of helping a woman whom he believed to be hitting on him. The other firefighters laugh at his story. Sullivan interrupts and asks where Andy is. Captain Aquino tells him she's in the junkyard gym.
Maya, Carina, and Andy return to Kaminski's. Maya says it was a mistake to go confront him. But that doesn't mean he gets to steal their joy. She turns the music back on and pulls Carina back in to dance. The others get up and join them. Sullivan asks Andy what happened. She tells him she was transferred, but refuses to talk to him beyond that. She takes off her shoes to join the dancing. It's for the best because she doesn't want to work with him anymore.
Andy spots Theo as he lifts. Sullivan asks if she has a minute. It's been ten months and she's refused to talk to him or come home. Theo agrees to give them a minute. Sullivan says they took vows and he takes them seriously. She's been couch surfing. She says her friends enjoy having her around. Sullivan thinks she hasn't filed for divorce because she loves him and he loves her. He says they can rise together. Andy says she works at a station where she's the only woman. Everything smells like feet, including dinner. Her job is just a job now. He did that. He says she did that. Andy says they're not a phoenix. They're just a pile of ash.
The Phoenix Fair is buzzing. Maya stands with Beckett by the engine handing out waters. Beckett calls out to people to come get their picture taken with a pretty firefighter. She tells him she's also an Olympian and there are better ways to refer to her. He corrects that they can come take pictures with the pretty Olympian firefighter. A girl comes and Maya poses with her. Beckett joins their photo.
Dean watches stilt walkers and shakes his head as he and Jack set up cones. They talk about Dean's new program, which he's funding with the settlement money. They'll respond to non-violent emergencies with non-violet responders: no cops and no guns. Just responders trained to de-escalate the situation. Jack says he's on board, but B team is grumbling that he's adding to the workload with no extra pay. He says eventually there will be extra pay. He's naming the program Crisis One. They hear fireworks in the distance and run to respond. Vic says the last one there had to ride in the Undies Bike Race.
Jack tells Dean it was just a drunken make out at a wedding and it doesn't count. He still thinks Dean should tell Vic how he feels. Dean says it would make their relationship awkward and Vic would start avoiding him, which he doesn't want. Vic doesn't feel like he feels and he doesn't want to become someone she has to manage. Jack says he's afraid he's going to be alone his whole life. People keep leaving and it's a cycle he can't break. He hates being alone. So it upsets him to hear Dean not try to get Vic. Dean says he loves Vic enough not to let her know.
Brad DiMarco, who is dressed like a phoenix, stands among his friends, including Tara Brown, Will, Bella, and Mac. Jack uses a megaphone to warn them against setting off any more fireworks, but Brad lights one anyway and it explodes in his face, knocking him and Tara to the ground. Travis calls for help and goes to tend to Brad, who has a large injury to his cheek.
Maya grabs the radio from the table and starts to call for help out of habit, but Beckett takes the radio from her and takes over, calling for the aid car. Bella, Mac, and Will approach them as they beg for help for Brad. Maya tries to calm them down, saying they called an aid car. Will then says he has it and takes off. Jack comes up, saying he needs the medical bag from the rig, but they turn to see that Will has climbed into the rig and is driving away. Maya asks Beckett if he left the rig open. They watch as Will drives into an intersection, where he's t-boned by a delivery van, tipping the engine onto its side.
As they drive to the fair, Ben asks Sullivan if he thinks Dean can be convinced to work the PRT into Crisis One so it's not a total loss. Sullivan doesn't answer because he's lost in thought. They're stopped by backed up traffic.
Travis asks for a t-shirt to help stem the bleeding on Brad's face. Tara's worried that Brad's going to die, but Vic assures her he's just losing consciousness because of the pain. Travis asks for an ETA on the aid car, but Beckett says traffic is backed up because of the crash. Dean brings a medical kit he got from the fire jugglers, but there's not enough in it to do anything. Beckett asks if they can transport the patient the six blocks to Grey Sloan on foot. Vic assesses that he weighs about 250 pounds and says they can't, but Travis says they can if they can get the gurney and more help.
At the engine, Maya and Jack try to assess Will. He's alive, but altered, so they need to get him out quickly. They'll have to remove the windshield to get him out. Ben reports that the aid car is still stuck in traffic, so Beckett tells him to grab the gurney from the back and get to the park. Sullivan agrees to stay behind with the rig and try to park it.
Ben approaches Sullivan at the wedding and says everyone's wondering why he's sticking around. Sullivan says he's waiting for Andy to talk to him. Sullivan still thinks he did the right thing, but Ben says he's ambitious like Sullivan, but when you start pushing other people out of the way to get where you want to be, you become ruthless. Ben admires Sullivan in a lot of ways, but he's ruthless and needs to own up to that.
At their tent at the fair, Andy tells Theo he's in no position to judge her because he's never been married. He tells her if she's still mad, she needs to make a change. Even his mother, who goes to church six days a week, would not want her to stay married to someone she hates. Theo says his mother is in Nicaragua with his dad's family, saying it makes her feel close to him to be with them. Andy says she's not staying with him out of guilt. They're interrupted when Emmett walks up with his bike. He's just in very tiny bike shorts because he was planning to do the Undies Bike Race, but chickened out. He was planning to surprise Travis. Captain Aquino approaches and says station 19 is having trouble with the engine and aid car and sends Theo and Andy to help out. Once they're gone, Aquino asks Emmett if he's Michael Dixon's son and he confirms that he is. Emmett then leaves to follow Theo and Andy.
Brad tries to talk, but can't be understood. Travis asks Tara if Brad was taking anything and she admits they were all using mushrooms. She knows it's stupid and the fireworks were stupid, but she's been depressed because she got used to being alone. Brad helped her by dragging out of her house. Ben then arrives with the gurney.
Andy and Theo arrive at the engine and learn what happened. Maya sends Theo to help with Brad while Andy helps free Will. Andy spots fuel leaking from the engine and asks if anyone's worried about that.
Tara starts to hyperventilate while they work on Brad. Vic grabs a popcorn from a passerby, dumps the bag, and gives it to Tara to breathe into. Theo and Emmett arrive to help.
Theo and Vic say if Travis changes his mind, at least they got laid and it was good. Theo says he hasn't stopped thinking about Vic since they met. Vic's not sure she can live up to that.
Emmett and Travis agree that life is weird. Travis says no one would sign up for life if they knew. Emmett says he would, even with everything, if someone showed him this moment with Travis. He had to fight to live his life the way he wants to, but that just makes moments like this one sweetest and he wouldn't trade it. Travis is afraid he's signing up for more pain. Emmett reminds him that he asked for this.
Andy asks Beckett about the leak and he says the class B foam is on the engine in a compartment on the side that got hit. So he's just hoping it won't blow up. Sullivan says the engine means a lot to the team. Beckett then tells Maya she's going to have to climb the engine to get to the foam. Sullivan says it's not safe, but he doesn't have a better idea, so he says he'll climb with Maya. Andy interjects and says she'll do it instead.
Travis sends Emmett ahead of them with his bike to clear the way, clarifying that he doesn't have to make the siren sound. Ben warns them to watch out for the crowd as they're drunk and high. Tara begs for them to save him again and Theo volunteers to stay with her. Vic says she loves him as they take off. After they're gone, Theo says he loves Vic. He then helps Tara get up so they can walk to the hospital as well.
The windshield is off and they pull Will to safety. Once he's out, Andy and Maya start climbing. Andy wonders why she thinks Beckett is kind of hot and Maya says it's because she has a thing for patronizing authority figures. While they try to get to the foam, Sullivan notices a parade of people approaching, led by fire jugglers. He tries to get them to stop, but is unable to and one of the fire jugglers drops a lit torch into the fuel, where it rapidly spreads back to the engine, forcing Maya and Andy to jump to safety as the engine explodes behind them.
Beckett, Maya, and Andy stand up as they watch the engine go up in flames. There's a second explosion.
They get Brad to the hospital and into the ER.
Andy watches as the decal dedicating the engine in Pruitt's memory burns.
Maya and Carina dance pressed closely together. Everyone else has left. Carina pulls back and notices Maya's crying. She pulls Maya in for a hug and holds her tightly.
The rest of station 23 arrives and Andy goes to join them even as she cries. Aquino apologizes and knows it's hard for her to watch the engine burn. They start working on the fire.
Tara and Theo arrive at the hospital and Tara asks if Brad's okay. Ben says he'll probably need surgery. He takes Tara to the front desk for an update and so she can get her ankle looked at. Theo asks Vic about her declaration of love and she downplays it. Dean says he hopes Tara tells Brad she loves him. Travis says he wonders if she'll still love him when she learns they can't replace his cheek, but Vic says that's shallow and Theo agrees that cheekless people need love, too. Dean has to leave to go to a meeting for Crisis One. Over the radio, they hear about the fire and race back to the park.
Station 23 is still working on the fire. Beckett stops his team from helping, saying it's 23's scene now. He doesn't understand the sentimentality about the engine and says they'll get another one. Sullivan says he can't understand how Beckett got the job over Andy.
Back at 19, Ben says it's weird coming home without Andy. Vic asks what happens now. Jack says they're going to send a reserve rig. Beckett calls them for a lineup. He tells them the engine is gone, but there was no loss of life, so the day was a win. After he dismisses them, Sullivan apologizes in front of everyone for going to McCallister. Maya thanks him for apologizing and then rallies the team with a, "19!"
Theo tells Andy about a car his father had that held special significance to Theo even though it was a beater. After his father died, he ended up crashing it. He was fine, but the car was totaled and it felt like he lost his dad all over again. He understands and says he'll guard the door if Andy wants to cry in the shower. Andy tells Theo she got married too fast because her father was dying. Watching the engine burn was hard because now her father is the last piece of her dad she has and she feels like if she lets go of that, she doesn't know what's left. Theo says she's what's left. Andy starts crying because of everything she's lost. Theo says she's still standing because she's the phoenix and she rises.
Vic is horrified that she told Theo she loved him over a gurney. Dean comes in and says she has something to say to Vic. Vic thinks it's about her swearing in front of Pru and apologizes for that, but Dean says it's not that. He struggles for a moment and then instead of confessing his love, he asks her to be a conflict resolution specialist for Crisis One. This frustrates Jack, but Vic agrees to do it.
Sullivan finds Andy in the barn. It feels wrong to be in there without the engine. He says it feels wrong to be there without her. Andy says she hasn't filed for divorce because she didn't want Maya and Carina to feel responsible for the end of their marriage while just starting their own. So Andy waiting to see if Sullivan would understand how wrong he was and apologize and change. He says he has, but Andy says she doesn't respect him anymore and can't forgive him. She's called a divorce lawyer and he said it would be simple since they have no kids and not many assets. They made promises to each other before God and her father, but she believes both God and her father would want her to be happy and understand that sometimes you change your mind.

Phoenix Fair Accident[]
Brad was using mushrooms at the Phoenix Fair and setting off fireworks with his friends when one exploded in his face, seriously injuring him. Beckett called for an aid car, but while they were waiting for it to arrive, one of Brad's friends, Will, who was also high, climbed into Engine 19 and started driving it out of the park. He drove it into an intersection, where it was t-boned by a delivery van, leaving it tipped on its side with Will trapped inside. Due to this accident, traffic was stopped, forcing Ben to bring the gurney out of the back of the aid car and walk it down to the park. Meanwhile, Travis and Vic began treating Brad's injuries by applying pressure. Another friend, Tara, had an injured ankle from the same incident, so Dean started treating her. Once Ben arrived with the gurney, they loaded Brad onto it and began walking him to the hospital, led by Emmett on his bike.
Back at the engine, Maya and Jack determined that Will was breathing, but altered, and they'd need to remove the engine's windshield to get him out. When Andy arrived, she noticed the engine was leaking fuel out onto the street, increasing the urgency of the situation. Beckett ordered Maya and Andy to climb on top of the engine to get the foam to spray on the fuel because the backup engine he'd called for wouldn't arrive in time, which they did after the windshield was removed and Will was pulled to safety. As they tried to pry the compartment open, a fire juggler dropped a lit baton, causing a fire that quickly spread back in the direction of the engine, forcing Maya and Andy to jump off the engine to safety. They then watched as the engine became engulfed in flames, unable to do anything to stop it. The crew of 23, including Andy, began working to put the fire out, but the engine was destroyed.
