Full Summary[]
Andy tries on multiple outfits in front of a mirror. From her laptop, Elena gives her input. Elena asks which guy it is tonight. Andy says it's Roland, the massage therapist. Elena is proud of her for dating outside the fire station. But she has a type. Andy needs a guy who can handle her. Elena felt the same way about Pruitt. Maybe Andy needs a guy who lights up her body and then her brain and her heart. Someone who challenges her. Andy doesn't think she needs more of a challenge. She doesn't need some skinny jerk with an accent who thinks he can win every conversation with a wink and a smile. She tells Elena about Eli and Elena realizes Andy likes him, though Andy denies it.
Ross and Sullivan text each other as Samson and Delilah. Sullivan leaves her last text message on read.
Maya is icing her ankle. Carina knocks on the door and asks what she's doing in the guest room, so she removes the ice, re-wraps her ankle, and puts on her socks. Carina asks if she remembers the first night they hooked up. Carina remembers everything about that night, the smell of Maya's hair and the lavender flowers nearby. Maya tried to make a weird joke about doing CPR. Maya says she was nervous. She asks if Carina has a point. Carina says that's the jerk who tried to push her away the next morning. Carina was happy to walk away and never see Maya again, but Maya stopped her and apologized to her and kissed her. And they've come so far. Carina knows everything feels like a lot right now, but they're past that. She doesn't have to push Carina away anymore. Maya opens the guest room door to find Carina standing there in lingerie. There are flower petals on the floor and candles lining the hallway. It's everything from their first night together. Carina tells Maya she loves her and says whatever they're going through, they'll get through it together because their love story is beautiful and Carina doesn't want to lose it. Maya takes Carina's hand, then pulls her in for a kiss, saying she missed her. Carina missed Maya too. As they kiss, they move back toward their bedroom.
Vic tries to record a video to promote her fire camp. She fumbles and asks Theo why she's so bad at this. Theo is going around the station checking all the fire safety equipment. He's staying on top of things because their captain isn't. Vic offers her help, but Theo knows she has a lot going on today. She has to meet Travis to talk about his union thing later, which she forgot. She thanks him for reminding her.
Ben comes in surprised to find an elaborate breakfast in the beanery. Travis isn't sure what got into Maya, but he likes it. Ben tells Maya it looks like a couple days off served her well. She tells him she enjoyed her time off. Beckett tells Maya she made a nice breakfast and thanks her for being an asset to the team. After he's gone, they talk about how weird that was. At the table, Andy tries to get Sullivan to try some bacon, but he prefers his smoothies. Their phones chime and they're horrified to see a report about Travis being arrested for public intoxication and the assault of a fellow firefighter. Ben says that's low even for Dixon. Travis thinks it's on brand for him. Vic comes in, saying she can fix it. She tries to make up a plan on the spot. Travis says they should have seen this coming and wonders how they didn't. Crisis One is called out to a parking structure. Andy and Sullivan get up to answer it.
On the way to their scene, Andy says they might need to bring the harness for this call. Andy asks if Sullivan is having lady problems. He was looking at his phone like a teenager. Sullivan says there's a particular woman he likes. Andy tells him she went on a date with a message therapist because she needed a massage. She hinted at it all night until he finally told her what he charges. What she learned it that if she wants a massage, she should book one. If Sullivan likes the lady, he should tell her, ask her for what he wants. Sullivan says that's good advice. He's seen how she's stepped up to improve the morale of the house. Andy asks if that means he should have made her captain when he had the chance. He says it's something like that. They arrive at their scene.
On the roof of the parking garage, Clarke is waiting for them along with Raphael, who has a bottle of gin in his hand. Raphael is upset that Clarke brought the cops. Clarke quietly tells them staff said Raphael was pacing, yelling, and talking to himself. He's calmed down, but Clarke doesn't think he'll let go of the bottle. Andy introduces herself to Raphael and asks him to explain what's happening. Raphael says he's really sick, the kind of sick the hospital can't help. He's going to live a miserable life until he dies slowly and painfully. Unless he dies on his own terms. He decides to do that. He stands by the ledge and looks out, then takes another sip.
Ben is bringing supplies into the station when he sees Jack sleeping in his truck. He wakes Jack and brings him inside. Ben tells Carina Grey Sloan donated the gloves, but not the saline bags. Carina notices Jack and asks if he's volunteering. Ben decides to say he is. Carina got them some volunteers, too. She points out Peggy and Dayna. What Ben remembers about them is how clumsy they are. Carina says they're her friends and they're wonderful and they want to help. Ben says to put cones and tape around them and not let them bake anything.
Maya passes Jack as she pushes a patient into a bay. Jack goes to the desk and Peggy welcomes him to the station 19 clinic. He says it's the Dean Miller Memorial Clinic and Dayna points out the large sign that says exactly that. Dayna notices his wrist and asks if that's why he's there. Peggy recognizes that he used to work there, but then remembers she shouldn't ask about that. They give him a form to fill out and say he'll be seen in the order of arrival. Jack says the clinic isn't supposed to have forms, but he takes it anyway. Peggy wonders if she should help him fill out the forms.
Beckett passes Travis and thanks him for helping with the clinic. Travis asks what's going on with him. Ross comes in and says it's because she's there. She asks Travis to meet her in the conference room.
Travis apologizes to Ross for the trouble he's caused. Ross says she's at the station because she's started a new pilot program where she rotates through stations. Being at 19 today is just coincidence. Travis has already started trying to figure out how to make things right. Ross says she doesn't care. It's politics. He can't walk away with his hands clean. She gets mud slung at her too. She has to keep a pristine composure so it slides off. For people like them, they can't be half-anything. Travis knows they need to be double. Ross tells him he's an exceptional firefighter, but he's only half a mayoral candidate. If he wants to beat Dixon, he can't let the mud stick. He has to throw some of his own or find someone to do it for him. A call comes in and Travis goes to answer it.
Clarke tries to calm Raphael down and get him to breathe. Raphael doesn't want to do that. Raphael says he used to come here with his dad. They would watch fireworks or listen to nearby concerts. They had picnics on the car. He asks them to leave him alone because this is his place. Sullivan radios and says Raphael's a potential jumper and he has the harness ready.
Vic talks to Theo about how she's struggling as Travis's campaign manager. Theo says he's never seen her be bad at anything she really wanted, so maybe that should tell her something. He asks if she really wants to keep doing this. Vic says Travis will be devastated if she quit, but he's not asking about Travis. Vic wants to talk about what he's doing instead. She's seen him checking alarms that aren't beeping. Beckett announces that they've arrived.
Liz comes out and says eight of her co-workers are trapped in the smelting room, where they melt the batteries down. They haven't shut it down because they can't. The lab and the vent system are electronically sealed. Beckett tells his team to bring in entry tools. He calls for a HAZMAT team.
Ross radios Crisis One to ask for an update. Andy reports that she's engaged with Raphael who is showing signs of self-harm.
Clarke says it seems like Raphael has a good relationship with his dad and asks where his father is now. Raphael says he's "with God." That's what his mom always says. He died when Raphael was 14, just dropped in front of him. He started shaking all the time after that. His mom tried to reassure him by saying his father was with God, but he was 14 and wanted his dad with him. Andy says her mom faked her death to get away from her and her dad. She's not trying to compete with Raphael, but she gets it. She knows what that feels like. But she knows if she were sick, her dad would want her to fight for her life and not give up. Raphael says there's nothing left to fight for. He's not even 35 and he's in heart failure because of the toxins he was exposed to at work. Raphael notices Sullivan inching toward him and starts to panic.
Brooke goes to the registration desk at the clinic. Before she can say why she's there, Carina calls Jack back. Jack complains about the wait, but Carina reminds him that he's under a familiar, stable roof. Peggy notices her watching Jack and comments that he's attractive. Brooke says it burns when she pees. Peggy understands and slips a pamphlet about STDs on top of her registration form.
Maya asks why they can't shut it off and Liz says the new owners digitized everything. They need the engineer's palm print to get emergency access. She doesn't know where the engineer is because he didn't come to work. Management told her to start the process anyway. Travis says they threw them in with no exit plan. Liz showed them the room. All the workers inside are still conscious. The doors and windows are reinforced to protect people outside the room from exposure to heat and chemicals. The suits the workers are wearing have filtration, but no oxygen. Maya is prepared to breach, but Liz says it won't work. The workers inside the room indicate that there's acid in the air. Beckett sent Vic and Theo to the rook to cut a ventilation hole. Liz says if they don't get the workers out within 20 minutes, they'll die.
Brooke spies on Jack through the dividers. Dayna and Peggy bring her a cup to pee in. Peggy tells her when they were in college, the unofficial slogan was "queer in a year or your money back." She and Dayne didn't get their money back, but they did get the clap. Dayna corrects that they got chlamydia. Carina says Dayna's right. The clap is gonorrhea. Dayna says they were trying to reassure Brooke with stories. Carina says she's sure it's appreciated, but what she really needs them to do is sort inventory. They realize they've been fired from talking to patients and walk away. Carina directs Brooke to the bathroom.
Ben is incredulous that Jack wrapped tape around his brace, Jack says it got loose during an altercation. Ben lectures Jack about sleeping in his truck outside the station. Jack says he parked there because he knows the parking laws and can't afford another ticket. As Ben replaces his brace, he tells Jack he needs to get it together because he showed up and reminded Pru he exists and now she can't stop talking about Uncle Jack. When he lets Pru down, Ben gets to give him a lecture. Jack's disappointed with what Ben has done with the clinic. It was supposed to be a bare bones, no paperwork place, but now they have forms and white lab coats. Ben tells him that without him, he and Carina defaulted to their training as doctors. If Jack wants it fixed, he needs to come back and fix it himself. Until then, Ben suggests he get a shower, shave, and take a nap in his old bunk. He gives Jack some clean clothes to wear. On he way out, Jack runs into Brooke. Carina comes by and asks if Brooke has her sample. Brooke says he forgot where Carina said the bathroom was, so Carina directs her there again.
Maya and Travis attempt to saw through the doors. They still don't have way to get air into the room. They try again. Travis notices one of the worker moving around and Liz says the sulfuric acid must be rising and eating through their suits. Maya and Travis direct the workers to lie down on the ground. Travis says the owners are evil. Beckett reports an update to Dispatch. Ross says she's still waiting for a response from the power company.
On the roof, Theo reports that he and Vic had popped open three vents, but there's a metal seal underneath. The room is a fortress, but they're trying.
Beckett calls for another HAZMAT unit. He sees Liz talking to someone on the phone. She says it's her manager. She puts it on speaker and he tells the manager he'll be criminally liable if the workers die. He says he doesn't have access. Only the engineer, Rafi, can open the door.
Ross hears the name Rafi and checks the Crisis One call.
Raphael stands up on the hood of a car. He says he doesn't want to think about it anymore. He just wants to be a person and not have his company throw him out when he doesn't work anymore. He had a co-worker who got him the job when he needed it most. Then he watched that friend get sick and die from working there. The company just shrugged it off. It's been a week since he died. Ross radios Andy and has her back out of earshot. She asks if Raphael is an engineer at a battery recycling plant. Andy says yes and Ross says he might be the key to saving eight lives on another call. Sullivan says he knows what it feels like to be used and discarded. But Sullivan says Raphael should quit those institutions, not himself. He deserves to live and reclaim his life. Raphael sees Andy trying to whisper something and tells her not to whisper about him. She asks if he's an engineer. When he says he is, she tells him his people are in trouble. Raphael moves suddenly and trips over the edge.
Sullivan jumps after Raphael and catches him. Andy tries to use the rope to pull them up, but can't do it even with Clarke's help. Raphael frantically tells Sullivan he doesn't want to die like this. Sullivan tells Andy to lower them a few feet. Andy shows Clark how to give the rope some slack. Then she goes down one level. She calls to Clarke to lower them and pulls them both to safety. Andy calls it in.
Sullivan drives Raphael and Andy to the plant in the aid car.
Travis and Maya continue sawing at the doors. Raphael comes in and uses his palm to override the lock and open the doors. Then he backs off as they open the doors and pull the workers out.
Carina tells Brooke she has no UTI and she's not pregnant. She says that's good. Peggy and Dayna eavesdrop and celebrate with her. Carina asks if that's the real reason she came in because most college girls are a lot more relieved than that to learn they're not pregnant. Brooke asks if Carina's ever thought that when someone's made it clear they want nothing to do with you, that you might change their mind. Carina is lost and asks if she needs mental health services. Brooke says no, but if you love someone, you honor their boundaries, right? She knows it's right. She thanks Carina and tells her to thank Peggy and Dayna. She hands Carina an envelope and asks her to deliver it. Carina turns it over and sees that it's for Jack.
HAZMAT cleans up the area as the start treating the evacuated workers. On a gurney, Devin starts seizing. Liz asks if he'll be okay. Raphael sees this and tries to run to Devin. He blames himself.
They're able to stabilized Devin and get him to the air car to go to the hospital. Raphael tells Liz he's sorry. He didn't meant to hurt anyone but himself. Liz hugs him and says it's not his fault. She shouldn't have started the process without him. Raphael says it's not her fault. It's their fault. He promises to use the time he has left making sure they pay. He's going to take his life back.
Ben says he's grateful for the help, but Peggy and Dayna are like a two-headed bull in a china shop. Carina's too tired to translate that. She asks if Jack is still there and Ben says he is. She gives Ben the envelope for Jack and tells him about Brooke.
Vic tells Travis she should have anticipated this move from Dixon. She thinks to do that, she would have had to unearth some of the Ripley stuff and she's buried that deep. Eli says someone should have locked Travis's records from day one. Vic agrees. Eli says now he needs a spin. Vic asks who he is. Travis says Eli's trying to be his campaign manager, but Travis already told him no because he has Vic. Vic asks how he'll spin it and he says he'd change the narrative to say he was defending another firefighter. Firefighters and the union will praise him. Vic tells Travis she won't have time to manage his campaign with the camp she's doing. So he should hire Eli because Travis needs him.
Maya finds Carina and says she's happy Carina is still there. Carina asks how the call was. Maya says it was almost awful and devastating, but then it wasn't. Like them. Maya asks if Carina took a pregnancy test. Carina says no, she wouldn't do that without Maya. Maya asks Carina what's wrong then. Carina says she still needs Maya to get help. She wants them to be in love and have sex and make a baby, but she needs Maya to get help. She's holding firm on that boundary and needs Maya to honor that. Maya says that Carina growing up with her dad gave her some control issues. Carina thinks Maya's using the truth to make it impossible for her to argue. Maya doesn't want to argue. She wants Carina to understand that she's helping herself how she does it best. Talking doesn't work for her. She's working through her things the way that works for her. If that upsets Carina, she needs to work that out her way. But trying to control Maya won't work for either of them.
Eli says what Dixon did is normal politics. It shows that he respects Travis enough to get his hands dirty. Now they have to return the favor. Andy comes in and asks if Travis let Eli talk him over to the dark side. Travis asks how dark they're talking. Eli says it's nothing illegal or unethical. Andy thinks their standards might be different. Eli says it's time for Travis to get serious. He doesn't want to stand by while Dixon runs the city into the ground. Andy says they grew up there. It's not Eli's city. Andy says the station has taken too many hits lately. She doesn't want Eli to turn Travis into someone he's not. Eli's going to turn him into a winning candidate. Andy says he doesn't quit. That's how he wins.
Ben and Sullivan talk about Sullivan catching Raphael. It's the kind of move Sullivan would have chastised Ben for. Ross hears them and asks about their call. Sullivan says her connecting the two calls was impressive. As they go upstairs, Theo asks to talk to Ross. He tells her he's got a bad feeling, based on his history, about Beckett and his lack of leadership. Morale is low at the station and he's worried. He keeps double checking Beckett's work and checking all the alarms at the station. He's not saying Beckett's a bad firefighter, but he's a bad leader. Their station needs a good leader.
Jack sits on the roof. Andy joins him. She has the envelope. They've made bets on what it is. Andy says they've all missed him. He's loved at the station. She says he could come home. He agrees to talk to Ross. Andy says she could cheer or cry, but they had an intense call, so she's going to go downstairs. Unless he wants to open the envelope and settle the bet. She bet on grown daughter he never knew about. He says he'll keep her posted.
Maya runs on the treadmill. She ignores a call from Carina.
Carina takes a pregnancy test out of her drawer and goes into the bathroom.
Maya continues running.
Sullivan goes into the beanery and grabs a donut.
Ross tries to text Sullivan, but erases three drafts before saying she hopes he has a good night.
Jack opens the envelope. It's a note from Brooke saying that their parents always kept this and to call if he ever wants to talk. Underneath is a picture of Jack as a baby.

Raphael[]
Crisis One was called out to the parking structure of the Caldwell Shopping Center. Sullivan and Andy arrived to find Raphael, who had been drinking and acting erratically. Andy introduced herself and asked Raphael what was happening. Raphael told her he was sick and was going to live a life of misery and suffering before dying slowly and painfully. Or he could die on his own terms, which he wanted to do. He stepped up onto the ledge. While Andy talked to him and distracted him, Sullivan prepared the harness to catch him if he jumped. Raphael told them his father had died when he was 14, right in front of him. Andy tried to convince him to fight to take back his life, but he told her there was nothing to fight for. He was in heart failure because of chemicals he was exposed to at work. When Raphael noticed Sullivan approaching him, he became agitated. He told them how he'd watched his friend deteriorate due to the exposure and the company just shrugged it off. Ross called and reported to Andy that Raphael was the key to saving eight lives on another call. When Raphael heard that his co-workers were at risk of dying, he moved suddenly and slipped off the ledge. Sullivan jumped after him and caught him. Raphael clung to Sullivan and told him he didn't want to die like this. With Clarke's help, Andy lowered them to the next level and she pulled them to safety. Then they got Raphael into the aid car and took him to the battery plant.
Jack Gibson[]
Jack came to the clinic because he broke the brace on his wrist. Ben examined him and replaced the brace.
Arkine Battery Recycling Plant[]
Ladder 19 responded to the Arkine Battery Recycling Plant. Liz let them inside, saying eight of her co-workers were trapped in the smelting room where the batteries were melted down for recycling. They couldn't shut it because they were electronically sealed. Beckett called for HAZMAT and told the team to bring in entry supplies. As she took them to the room where the workers were trapped, Liz explained that the system required their engineer's palm print to override and shut it off, but he didn't show up for work. Management had told her to start the process without him. The doors were thick and would be difficult to penetrate. Liz warned them that they only had about twenty minutes before the people in the room died. Maya and Travis worked on getting a hole in the door so they could get oxygen in. They also had the workers lie down on the ground. On the roof, Theo and Vic were unable to get a vent. The manager said that he didn't have access. The only person who did was Rafi, their engineer. Ross overheard this and realized their engineer was Raphael from the Crisis One Call. They were able to get him to the plant, where he opened the door, allowing them to evacuate the workers. Outside, Devin had a seizure from the exposure. They were able to stabilize him and got him into the aid car to take him to the hospital.
Brooke Hill[]
Brooke came into the clinic and told Dayna and Peggy that it burned when she peed. They gave her a cup and Carina directed her to the bathroom to fill it. Carina later told her her UTI testing and pregnancy test were both negative. Carina was suspicious and asked if that was really why she came. She gave Carina an envelope and asked her to deliver it. It was addressed to Jack.
