Sam was at the hospital for something related to his heart when his doctors used the opportunity to test out a medical device Wendell Ndugu was trying to sell them, a patch that gave continuous ECG reading from its wearer. They put the patch on Sam Reynolds, but when the device connected, it showed no heartbeat. Winston took the patch off Sam, put it on himself, and got the same reading, which reassured Sam.
